Alright... this may seem silly...
But is it Donny, or Donnie? When they are talking to him and abbreviate his name. I'm trying to write fanfic so this is relevant. I can't seem to find any info, and I see both versions almost equally all over the net. At least it's easy with Raph, Leo and Mikey. *rolls eyes* Any offical info?

And other times they do shorten it (ala. Raph and Leo) to "Don" just as often I think.

I know that Jon, but when Mikey talks to him, more often than not he uses Donny or Donnie. "Don" is more formal.
Anyway, that's why I'm asking. |

the ie suffix has traditionally been feminine while the y usually takes the masculine

So if I want to imply that Donatello is GAY...
Thank you Neutrino, that is extremely helpful. *nods* |

I spell it "Donny." However, I can't remember if anyone else has spelled it that way, except in the Image comics (which aren't considered official). On the official TMNT website, in his profile, it's spelled "Donny" though. But I think tons of people spell it "Donnie."

I spell it "Donny" because I have never heard of a man named Donald spelling his nickname "Donnie" ... always "Donny." Well, most often it's just "Don," but I understand you want a more familiar Mikey-type nickname. At any rate, I assume it would be spelled the way I've seen most fellow humans do it.
And I agree that the "ie" suffix has feminine connotations for me. So I've never spelled it that way. Though almost every Donatello fangirl I've seen spells it "Donnie." It does look more cutesy that way, I suppose... |

I kind of agree that "--ie" is usually the feminine... Bobbie vs. Bobby, etc. But then again, I coulda sworn I saw it written "Donnie" somewheres official-like too, Jo. Like a comic book. But I try not to rely on my memory.
Dan Berger spells it "Donny." And Michelangelo

Thanks to everyone who replied. I went with Donny.
I'm sorry. ^^ Despite the fact that he wears purple... and is a pacifist who doesn't like to fight, and is soft spoken and gentle, I was just teasing about the gay. Nothing he's done implies it on the show at least, for the most part. He seems to like April. |

Haha, I was really joking.
...And yes. He likes April. *refrains from going into long winded speech that everyone's heard before* Let's just say... it's canon.

Where is it in canon? I haven't read many of the comics yet, though I aim to fix that. Is it in Volume 1 or 2 or perhaps Tales? I'm assuming it isn't 4 since she's married by then.

Well... hm. It's just supposed to have been in there, even if it's not blatently obvious. I know for SURE it's in the 2K3 series... I talked to the guys at the official site a few times... Don's always supposed to have had a crush on her. In the cartoon, however, it's played down a bit.
Really, not to get off topic, I think it's something they really should have explored a tad more. Though it's quite obvious the disdain between Casey and Don sometimes. Casey's even made some comments, hah. Um... But... back to your regularly scheduled thread.

I usually spell it Donny, it just looks better on paper when referring to males.

I think it's actually pretty blatant in 2K3.
