Would Hamato be their family name and Splinterson their middle name? Or is Splinterson their last name, like it used to be done in Scandinavia?

Hamato is usually accepted as their adopted family name. Never heard of Splinterson in my life. Sounds like a sitcom about a carpenter and his attempts at a social life.

Splinterson was used in FF and I think 2K3, too. I agree that it's lame.

But I also don't like Hamato. In my book everyone only has one name.

You're sure it wasn't "Splinter's son" for instance? Why would they use that Scandinavian manner anyway, since they have nothing to do with Scandinavia?

No, it was definitely one word. You can see it printed in "Timing is Everything" on the letter Don sends to Mike and Raph.

That's what I am not sure about. They do say "son of Splinter" and "Splinter's son", but I do not know if there is also the family name or middle name of "Splinterson".

But they do say "Hamato Splinter". Hence I wonder if that is the Turtles' family name too.

So it would be something like "Leonardo Splinterson Hamato", with "Splinterson" being the middle name the four boys share and "Hamato" being the family name. And Splinter would be "Splinter Yoshison Hamato".

Spawn Guy

"Leonardo Splinterson Hamato"

"Splinter Yoshison Hamato".

I'm sure the way both of those sound out loud is the reason they aren't the full names. Or used.

I think there's somewhere in the series where they say something likie "Hamato *turtle name*" I don't know where or if it even happened, but that's what I remember

Oh that episode... right...

... let's assume Don was in rush and made a typo.

... OR, he didn't want to reveal that "Hamato" name to post officers! One of them could have been a member of Foot Clan and could have destroyed or stolen that important package, non?

If you want to put in Japanese form, Hamato would go first. In Japan, the last/family name would go before the person's real name.

The Japanese commonly address each other by last name. Only close friends and children are usually addressed by first name. In addition, people rarely address each other just by name, but usually attach an appropriate title to the name. There is a large number of such titles depending on the gender and social position of the person you are addressing. Some of the most frequently used titles are:

* san: (for example Sato-san)
This is the most neutral and famous title, and can be used in most situations. Only in formal situations, san may not be polite enough.

* sama: (for example Sato-sama)
This is a more polite form of san, commonly used in formal situations and letters, but too polite in a casual context.

* kun: (for example Yusuke-kun)
This is an informal title used for boys and men that are younger than yourself.

* chan: (for example Megumi-chan)
This is an informal title used for young children and very close friends or family members.

* sensei: (for example Sato-sensei)
This is a title used for teachers, doctors and other people with a higher education and from whom you receive a service or instructions.

No, Splinterson as in Son of Splinter.

It's not necessarily a Scandinavian thing (Johnson, Wilson), but it is kind of archaic and I don't see why the TMNT would use it. I guess if they had a family name it would be 'Hamato', even though that is pretty retarded. I know they used it in the 2K3 cartoon, during the Battle Nexus episodes.

all these names that end in o coupled with the last name hamato sounds like a field of corn.

i think they're better suited to having just their first names...most of which btw are longer than most people's full names. ok maybe just mike's.

a little interjection here. the honorific Kun can also be used with women as well as men especially in the work force when a woman is your co-worker.

Also Sama is also used to adress people who are much higher in status than you are.

yeah...I'm really showing off my anime geekiness right now :oops:

Michelangelo: The name that doesn't end.

Good thing they never have to take standardized tests, Mikey would hold up everything filling in all his bubbles.

More on topic: I don't think Hamato would be a bad choice for their family name. In a way, if Splinter considered Yoshi his parent, and the TMNT consider Splinter to be their dad, then Yoshi is their paternal grandfather -- they would have the same name. It's a relatively loose connection compared to most family histories, but aside from their actual turtle and rat parents, that's pretty much all they have. I think "Hamato" sounds better than, say, "Leonardo Yurtleson." (What else are you going to name a pet turtle if you don't know the TMNT?)

Sewer Bull

Splinterson as an obligatory middle name would sound a lot like Russian "otestvo" - you know, that middle name usually ending with "-ich" that you inherit after your father.

Leonardo mentions that the Tribunal call him "Leonardo Splinterson" in the opening comments of one of the Lost Episodes.

I like sticking with Hamato, because not only was it official in 2K3 canon before this Splinterson nonsense... it just freaking makes sense.

Fortunately I don't think the turtles will ever have to apply for credit cards so won't need a full name. To me, they are always just Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and Donatello. Kind of like Madonna. No second name. That's just my preference though. hearing Hamato used makes me think of corny fanfics.

I think the full name would be:

"Raphael Splinterson Hamato"

Or in the Japanese form:

"Hamato Raphael Splinterson"

Or if Splinter is really angry at Raphael, would the Splinterson be dropped?

Regarding Leonardo being called Splinterson by the Tribunal, it could be simply "Splinter's son" in that specific case. He is simply proud of being Splinter's son. Not to mention happy to be back home and to be welcomed back even though he had been traumatized for a while.

The Turtles don't have middle names, I've never given it any thought. They live in the sewers and don't have birth certificates or credit cards, so they don't need middle names. I guess they use Splinterson as a last name in FF because they can have ID's.

So "Splinterson" is an alias using a Western tradition, but they are members of the Hamato clan. Hence Hamato is their true surname.

Hamato Raphael
Hamato Leonardo
Hamato Donatello
Hamato Michelangelo
Hamato Splinter

thats how i see their names

yeah its probably best they just drop the Hamato but i think it is good for them to be apart of a clan; it add to the family feeling and a sense of history of their family.

How does an extra name do this? The whole walking, talking mutant thing isn't enough?

Show me evidence that both Peter AND Kevin intended for there to be a surname, then we'll talk. Otherwise: Lame.

:lol: Awww, but some of the best fanfics out there use the Hamato name! I mean, I agree that the worst ones do, as well, but.... I'm mostly fond of it because of some really quality fanfiction that uses it in a practical way. But to each her own! :)

If they all have the Hamato surname, it adds evidence to the fact that they are a family. That it is not just a sensei training his students. That they are not just Splinter's pets or minions.

They may not need to use it because they are not legally registered like humans are. But they could still have it.

But there dosen't need to be any evidence, if you watch/read TMNT it's plain to see that they are a family, and they never have to refer to each other as Hamato (enter turtle name here).

Hahaha, I was planning to put "Hamato" before their names in a fanfic I'm dreaming up. But maybe it is lame. I don't ... especially like calling them the "Hamato clan" either. Because then it reminds me of how awkward the TMNT history is. I mean ... Splinter learned all the secrets of ninjitsu, as well as Japanese and English apparently, when he was Hamato Yoshi's pet rat?

It bugged the hell out of me in FF when the letter Don wrote was addressed to "Michelangelo Splinterson." Firstly, what about Raph, and secondly ... ew, Splinterson?

Splinterson... was only used by Don to show WHO THEY WERE. He is 'splinter's son'. It's not really their last name, for goodness sakes.

That being said, I don't mind Hamato... But I like to leave it as one, personally. Like Cher... or Madonna. ;) Or whatever.

...We are totally overthinking this insignificant detail. It's in FF, it's stupid, it doesn't MEAN anything. It was supposed to be 'cute'. 'Oh lookie, they're Splinter's sons, hahahahahahahablah blah blah.' I choose to ignore it, as it was insignificant and not really meaningful, as per their names.

Oh yeah, and stupid, lol.

Raffaello Di Giovanni *his father* (sometimes Johanness) Santi Sanzio De Urbino of Umbria..

Leonardo Di Ser (Master) Piero Da Vinci

Donato (Donatello was his nick name! ) Di Nicollo (his father) Di Betto Bardi (grandfather)

Michelangelo Di Ludovico (his father) Di Leonardo (his grandfather, and name of his older brother) Bounarati (great-grandfather) Simoni.(great-great grandfather)

I don't accept FF as anything remotely canon so don't think it's a particularly good basis for any assumption about full names.

Nevermind though, eh? I don't think this topic is going to resolve itself - without anything canon or comic based to back up any version of names.

If adding a middle or last name to your common name makes for comedic gold, it may be best to stick with the celebrity one-namer. Leonardo. Donatello. Michelangelo. Raphael. They can stand on their own quite nicely.

Besides, a ninja should strike fear into one's heart, not make one giggle.
