Turtles' Full Names

Would Hamato be their family name and Splinterson their middle name? Or is Splinterson their last name, like it used to be done in Scandinavia?

Hamato is usually accepted as their adopted family name. Never heard of Splinterson in my life. Sounds like a sitcom about a carpenter and his attempts at a social life.

Splinterson was used in FF and I think 2K3, too. I agree that it's lame.

But I also don't like Hamato. In my book everyone only has one name.

No, it was definitely one word. You can see it printed in "Timing is Everything" on the letter Don sends to Mike and Raph.

That's what I am not sure about. They do say "son of Splinter" and "Splinter's son", but I do not know if there is also the family name or middle name of "Splinterson".

But they do say "Hamato Splinter". Hence I wonder if that is the Turtles' family name too.

So it would be something like "Leonardo Splinterson Hamato", with "Splinterson" being the middle name the four boys share and "Hamato" being the family name. And Splinter would be "Splinter Yoshison Hamato".

Oh, I like that theory! Clever Donnie! Even after his brain got fried by witnessing his own creation! Bwahaha! I'm partial to Hamato as a last name, myself, whenever they have need of one. Which isn't often, really, except sometimes in fanfics.

If you want to put in Japanese form, Hamato would go first. In Japan, the last/family name would go before the person's real name.

No, Splinterson as in Son of Splinter.

It's not necessarily a Scandinavian thing (Johnson, Wilson), but it is kind of archaic and I don't see why the TMNT would use it. I guess if they had a family name it would be 'Hamato', even though that is pretty retarded. I know they used it in the 2K3 cartoon, during the Battle Nexus episodes.

i think they're better suited to having just their first names...most of which btw are longer than most people's full names. ok maybe just mike's.

a little interjection here. the honorific Kun can also be used with women as well as men especially in the work force when a woman is your co-worker.

Also Sama is also used to adress people who are much higher in status than you are.

More on topic: I don't think Hamato would be a bad choice for their family name. In a way, if Splinter considered Yoshi his parent, and the TMNT consider Splinter to be their dad, then Yoshi is their paternal grandfather -- they would have the same name. It's a relatively loose connection compared to most family histories, but aside from their actual turtle and rat parents, that's pretty much all they have. I think "Hamato" sounds better than, say, "Leonardo Yurtleson." (What else are you going to name a pet turtle if you don't know the TMNT?)

Leonardo mentions that the Tribunal call him "Leonardo Splinterson" in the opening comments of one of the Lost Episodes.

I like sticking with Hamato, because not only was it official in 2K3 canon before this Splinterson nonsense... it just freaking makes sense.

Fortunately I don't think the turtles will ever have to apply for credit cards so won't need a full name. To me, they are always just Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and Donatello. Kind of like Madonna. No second name. That's just my preference though. hearing Hamato used makes me think of corny fanfics.
