View Full Version : Cory Feldman and Secret of the Ooze...

I was listening to the radio this morning when the hosts mentioned that Corey Feldman and the "other Corey" who was a hit at the time ( and from what I understand, a friend of Feldman's) have a reality tv show. (I didn't catch the station it airs on.)

Anyway, they decided to play an audio clip of it.

In the clip, Feldman is trying to get the other Corey out of a slump (something about the two of them not being in "The Lost Boys 2"...) and he mentioned "TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze", making a comment that he knew how the other Corey felt, because he himself felt hurt when he wasn't asked to come back to do Secret of the Ooze.

I admit, the TMNT fangirl in me was fully paying attention at this point, was kind of excited at the mention of TMNT (despite it being about the movie in the 90's trilogy that I liked the least)...

But, now I'm confused?

Why wasn't CF asked to come back to do Secret of the Ooze, but was asked to do the third film?

I thought I had heard that he was in rehab at the time or something like that, but his comment implied otherwise.

Thoughts?

According to the timeline Feldman gives, wouldn't he have gotten clean before the voice work for Ninja Turtles? I always assumed that he didn't do TMNT 2 because of drugs, but according to an interview his time in rehab was in 1988 and 1989.

Being a guy, I didn't follow the Corey's......so I don't know.

But I was thinking about this last night. I think that Donatello 2 fit the Character better than Corey Feldman ever did, although I do like the voice he did for the character.

I almost wish they brought in the second guy for the third movie..

My guess is because he tried to playwrite too much, thus making Donatello the lamest character in the first film. Since he wasn't right for the part, he was ditched for Ooze. When the third rolled around, and they had the budget cuts, they opted to let Corey back in because they could get him for peanuts as he was obviously eager to do it. I can just hear the producers saying, "Okay, Corey. We'll let you have the part again on the condition that you play him geeky this time, like we've been telling you to". :P

^ Haha my thoughts exactly. Though since the third film was the worst of the three it didn't much matter who voiced the turtles at that point.

Was Leo's VA the same for III as they used in Movie 1?

gobo
07-31-2007, 01:11 PM
Yep. Leo's voice was the same in all three. So was Mikey's. The only voice-replacements were Don in Ooze, then Raph & Splinter in III.

^ Did they turtles voices sound a little different in Ooze than they did in Movie one to anyone else (excluding Don)? I always thought they used different VAs. :ohwell: Thanks gobo

According too the official site, Raph is different in two. But it's so close, one can't tell if so..

Raph changed through out the trilogy. Kevin Clash was replaced (along with Jim Henson's Creature Shop...stupid move) for 3. Not sure why the Feldster wasn't Donnie in SOTO, but I know one person on these boards who was glad...*coff*Jo*coff* In all fairness TMNT 1's Donnie was to "Three Stooges" at least by TMNT III Feldman played Donnie as a nerd....sorta.

:o OH MY GOODNESS! I remember someone pointing that out before, but I always thought it was a mistake. I just checked the credits on my DVDs, and they most certainly do have a different VA for Raph in the second. This is uncanny. :blanksta:

I remember back then Corey was flying high wasted all the time and was in detox at the time; he was having ar ought time back then either way. Maybe they didn't want a known druggie doing a Henson job? I dunno. I think he coulda played a really good geekoid Donnie, the writers just simply didn't give him the time of day. Don was cute in TMNT1 either way. :P

Raph:

1 Josh Pais
2 Laurie Faso
3 Tim Kelleher
4 Nolan North

Of course, the best voice: Josh. :P Attitude. Distinct voice. Totally Raph. I didn't like Faso's imitation, it was way off and the accent just wasn't right. Tim? Meh. Nolan...as good as Josh. If it couldn't be Josh, Nolan's is just as good.

I liked Feldman's Don, too, even though they showed him as being more of a stooge than a genius in the first one. He had just a couple little bits in the movie that would in some way imply that he might be a little smarter, like April asking him for help before Casey offers, or the idea that it's him working on the truck while Raph is unconscious (Raph being the one who works on the truck in the comics). Also the bit about where he, structurally speaking, says it wasn't a good time for more Foot to come in. Any others? That's offtopic though...

I don't think they showed him being a stooge. I just think they were showing a more real and plausable charecter. I mean they just had their first battle in the opening scene of the movie. He hasn't been that exposed to the technology of the world above just yet. Plus i think of the 1990 film as sorta being a Batman Begins type treatment of the turtles. Its much more grounded and rooted in reality. The foot clan is a group of ninjas with ninja weapons. No sci-fi blasters no clones no aliens. The gang (which i always took to be the purple dragons) feeds into the foot and is there breeding ground.

I always thought that since most of Don's technical ability came from studying foot technology in the comics and such that that is where he got his technical ability from. Its not like he could just go enroll at ITT Tech or something:P

I think they did a good job of showing that he was interested in the more techy and mechanical stuff without making him unbelieveably smart.

oh and i liked cory as donnie. I just always assumed after the first one was so successful that he probably asked for more money and so they made the sequels without him just like Crispin Glover and Back To The Future.

I'm glad he wasn't in 2 I hated his Don. He sounded like a chain smoker. Then again I think I'm the only person on Earth who liked Turtles 2 the best but I have a very good reason and since I've posted them so many times already I'll spare you all.

I agree with jerome. There wasn't much technology or gadgets for him really to act like a genius in the first movie.

I used to like SotO better, but over time TMNT 1 has remained good while I've gotten bored with SotO. And I'd personally like to hear why you think the sequel is better.

you guys make it sound like it was Corey's fault Donnie was the way he was, he's only the voice not the writer. Writers didn't give him his proper characterization, they made him immature as Mikey. They both seemed like 14 year old goofs. If the writers actually wrote Don right, I think Corey could have done a decent brainiac.

This may just be because I grew up knowing Donnie's the smart one, but he seemed smart to me in the first movie. He at least seemed like someone who read a lot, coming up with "bossa nova" and "bodacious." They had a phone and lights and stuff in their lair. I've always assumed those were products of Donnie, but it wouldn't really have been conducive to the plot to show him working on, say, installing a phone.

Corey Feldman had no business playing Donny in the first place. HORRIBLE casting. Adam Carl was about 8 million times better and still one of my favorite voices for Donny period.

I think I just need to get that out of my system every so often.

I've got to say that Corey Feldman made Donatello his own character in film 1. Completely out of the Doantello character, but Corey's Don was cool in a ifferent way to the Don we all know and love.

I know a lot of people hated Corey's Don, but I don't have a problem with it. I just wouldn't call it a loyal portrayal.

Don was unique in film 1 and I liked him.

Film 3 though.... they made a joke of Donatello and didn't treat his character with any respect. They just tried to make him as geeky as they possibly could.

"Nyuk nyuk" is the trademark of a stooge. He wasn't working on the truck. He was keeping Casey company. Turning a key is hardly rocket-science. Structurally speaking, smart-ass humor isn't a very reliable indicator of superior intellect. Technically, Feldman played Don dorky when he should have gone for geeky.

Rather, they needed more star power' for II, methinks.

Agreed. And while some are saying what Feldman's Don SAID wasn't his fault (which is kinda true; I agree that he may... may have been able to pull of a decent Don)... and don't get me wrong, I like Corey Feldman other than TMNT... but his voice was completely wrong for Donnie. Adam Carl had the best movie voice for Don; soft and more high-pitched and whatnot.

I appreciate that Corey liked playing the character, but he really just isn't the right person, vocally, for it. I remember when the first movie came out, (and YES, I grew up with 'The Corey's') and I remember being completely disappointed with the casting. Feldman is just not 'Don', no matter what anyone says.

Personally, I'd think that their latest choices for Don shows their real preferences. Guess they learned from that mistake, at least.

I'll go there again

The sequel took what kids wanted to see and made it happen. A live action old toon. The first movie was TRYING to be dark and edgy but it could never make it to that mark because it was to goofy to go all the way.

Two just knew it was goofy and went for it. It was bigger as well. It had mutants in it, more fights, and the same turtles charm we grew to love in the first movie.

2 comes with tons of good childhood memories as where 1 just doesn't. I love them both but I can't take 1 in. 2 is simple it's goofy, it's supposed to be perfect. 1 is supposed to be serious but it's way to goofy to be and I can't deal with it, it just doesn't mix right.

2 is the TMNT movie any 10 year old would rather see over 1. As adults I can understand you all liking better but being as how I view both TMNT movies as kids films and judging them as thus TMNT 2 is the better kids movie.

But to put it simply the #1 reason I like 2 better is all the great childhood memories I had from it. The rush I got when I watched that as a kid cannot be topped.

I see what you mean, but I personally think that balance of goofy and gritty was nice, it made that film unique. No one can argue with your nostalgia aspect, but the one thing that you were off on was the fights, the sequel might have had like one more fight, but they were so much better in the first one its not even funny. I think if they hadn't toned down the violence for SotO it would have pushed it over the first one easily.

I can agree from some aspects, but I do think that TMNT 1 had some real subtalty to the preformances (wow, never thought I'd say that about a movie about mutant fighting turtles) that I've only caught as an adult.

To back up and disagree with spitfire all in the same sentence... I grew up as a kid enjoying SotO more, but as I got older, I liked the dark grittyness of 1. I still love SotO though, don't worry. I go to it when I need a goofy laugh, and I go to 1 when I'm looking for some hardcore TMNT, if that made any sense.

I didn't care for TMNT2 Donnie. I don't think his voice was distinct enough. These are mutant turtles, I don't expect these ooo so perfect voices. Why couldn't one have a scratchy Corey voice? Or a odd toned Josh voice as Raph did. Robbie Rists' Mikey was distinct. Leo's was...*yawn*...okay. But Corey's Donnie was distinct. IMO, the best Don voice yet is Sam's in 2k3, when I hear Don in my head, it's Sam's voice. He rocks.

Corey's is unique, and he made the role his own. I was dissapointed when I didnt hear him in 2...pissed that some lamer did a crummy Raph in 2...but it's just a movie. BFD.

a live action old toon is exactly why i did not like this movie. I don't think the first one panders to kids and is trying to sell toys. The second one did. I do believe that this is the least favorite of Peter and Kevins as well. And donnie's voice in two is no where as cool as cory's in 1 & 3. Just my opinon though:)

Here is what Kevin Munroe has to say on this matter:

Corey was a great donny. Tmnt 1 voice cast was perfect i think.
Because of this and some of the other guys, i actually watch the actors lives progress that came from tmnt. I've watched every corey thing because of tmnt. I've followed elias through the millions of movies and shows he's done. I love seeing ernie reyes, josh pais, all of them. Elias especially so. I hope some of these big wig actors realize how much support they get from us because of what they did for turtles. I'll of course hold a much higher level of respect for laurence fishbourne, patrick stewart, sara michelle, chris evans and that whole crew too.

Corey's voice never bothered me. Hell, as a kid back then, I had to accept the fact that the turtles all had different voices from the toons and Raph was saying 'damn' alot. True, Don was never given anything really scientific to do, though back then as kid and only knowing of the OT, I was so sure Don was gonna turn that hummer into the Turtle Van...

TMNT was goofier and sillier, and as a kid I actually liked it over part 1. After Raph's beatdown and such, part 1 kinda dragged (again, I was a kid when I watched this) until the Turtles finallt went back to NY to kick some ass. Part 2 was light-hearted, funny and action-packed all the way through. I still could have done without Tokka and Rahzar being mutated babies... but oh well.

In retrospect, 2 things I noticed about the movies...

1. I always thought part 1 was darker and serious, and in a sense it, dealing with such issues as the possibilty of Splinter dying and Raph's overally attitude and near-death beatdown. I always thought the fights were more awesome... but no, they were played mostly for laughs including stufflike banging someone's head on piano, fighting with cymbals and whatnot. They didn't actually get down and get serious until they faced Shredder.

2. In the sequel, Shredder never actually fought. Just stood there barking orders, and as Super Shredder carelessly killed himself. Plus, the TMNT never faces Tatsu in actual combat. Casey took him down in part 1, and the Turtles just shall-slammed him in the sequel. Other than kicking Casey around, we never got to see Tatsu bust out some awesome martial arts moves.
