Hello all,

Im new to this forum, im 24 & live in Dublin. I joined this forum cause as a kid i loved the Turtles as did we all on here. But recently on youtube i was watching some of the old cartoons the ones i used to watch in the 80s & the memories came flooding back to me. I have even bought all the action figures again :tanime: & i bought VOL 1,2,3,4,5 & 6 of the old series on DVD.

I just wanted to get peoples intake on which they prefare the new or old Turtles? Me i personally do NOT like the new ones, just not the same feeling watching them.

Turtles from the 80s have so much more meaning to me, every morning before i would go to school i would grab a bowl of Frosties jump up on the sofa & watch the Turtles, Good times ( not for my sister when i thought i was Leonardo haha i used to batter her)

So ya which one do you people like better new or old?

Regards: TT.

Well... heck, I can't really choose. As I think both shows are great.

The Classic TMNT has it's action and was packed with humor. While the 2K3 TMNT is more on action, with a little humor.
Both blends (of action and humor) are good stuff.

That's a shallow approach, both shows are damn good. Granted, the original is far superior, but the new series is amongst the best you'll see presently.

I like them both very much:

- The OT was hysterical, had awesome character designs for the Turtles and April, and was a big staple of my tween and early teen years.

- The NT has awesome storylines and is very engaging.

They both have their time and place. They are both fantastic.

Both. I say I like the new show better, but looking at my viewing habits I'm constantly watching the original toon. I do have alot more OT episodes than I do NT, but still.

I prefer the new series overall, as it's very closely based on the original source material and feels a lot more like the "real" Turtles to me. There are some stinkers in there (anything with the Garbageman and a lot of the superhero stuff), but the major story arcs are really very well done and quite engaging. I just watched "Return to New York" again the other day - there's really nothing in the old cartoon that can even touch that.

I still love the old cartoon, but a lot of my fond feelings for it mostly stem from nostalgia. Unfortunately, a lot of its run really doesn't hold up after re-watching them now as an adult.

The old show is still entertaining and plenty amusing, but it's a lot harder for me to get into it now. The new show has much stronger storylines, hands-down better action, and, y'know, actual character development. It's really a much stronger show overall, but at the same time it's hard to directly compare them, as they're so different by nature.

I just watched "Return to New York" again the other day - there's really nothing in the old cartoon that can even touch that.

That's why no sensible fan even compares them. It'd be like saying the Adam West Batman movie is NOT one of the best adaptations of the Batman mythos established in the 1960s because the DCAU films are an example of the characters return to darker roots and beyond what was established by Bob Kane and Finger. Never mind the fact the film is hilarious, fun, enjoyable, and has enough great in-jokes and set-peices to be acclaimed as a product of it's time.

Really, who the heck cares what's better than what? Only modernists spoiled rotten by the 1990s resort to comparisons just to put themselves on some brokebacked horse and think there better than people who enjoy the original. Don't hold up? Bulls*it, you are obviously not watching the original TMNT for what it really is, not what it ISNT.

This is called THE TECHNODROME forums, that's not exactly a reason to start saying "Old toonz doesnt holdz upz".

I'm married, have a son, I've rewatched the original cartoon, I still find it better than the new series for reasons attributing to my enjoyment of Futurama and the earlier Simpsons

We dont need modernists trolling threads with "it doesnt hold up", there's no need for it. No need. What does it accomplish? Intentional or not, it's still a form of elitism and flamebait, it INSULTS fans who still think it holds up and has elements that put it above the present series.

It's a thread asking which series we prefer of the two. How on earth can responding to that query and explaining ones' opinions on the matter be considered "trolling"?

If you're really going to get so riled up over one person stating their personal preference, then I don't know what to tell you, but I don't think the problem really lies with me. Chill out, please. It's really not a big deal.

I shouldn't even bother replying to this, but really, there's no reason for you to take this so seriously. I did say that I enjoy both series. I enjoy the new one more for the reasons I provided, and I feel a lot of the old series doesn't hold up as well as it did when I saw them as a kid. This is just my personal opinion, and I'm sorry if it offends you, but it really shouldn't. Please just accept it for what it is and move on.

I can say that I like at least one or more episodes from every version of the turtles that have been on tv and yes even the next mutation.

shouldn't this thread go in the general tmnt section? :ohwell:

I love both series very much, I like the new series for the more serious plot elements and fighting and dramatic settings. I'm also a sucker for the emphasis on the family the new series has and the close brotherly bond the turtles have with each other. I also enjoy the maturtiy of the story telling and how the plots (well at first) pushed the evelop of whats allowed in saturday cartoon programming. I also like the more ninja-esch feel of the New toon and how the the turtles seem more like they have to "live in the shadows".

However I like the classic series because it is clever and breaks away from the mold of the standard that the more "serious" mudiums of the turtles have. I like how the classic series can shuffle personal relationships, interaction and personalites with the turtles and other characters into something fresh. And even though many people might say that the old toon turtles had no depth I really disagree. Even though they where portrayed in a very light hearted way there where times of emotion and feeling from the turtles that came off as very heart warming and genuane with out being forced, that I enjoyed it all the more because it came as a suprise, since the show was mostly comedy based. I actually enjoy some times the way the OT characters act and behave a bit better than how they do in the new toon. Plus it was just funny and amusing and pure enteratainment. I don't expect anything out of it except for what it is and that why enjoy it so much even now as an adult.

New Toon. It's not that I didn't like the Old Toon, it's just that the red sky stuff appealed to me more.

I love both, their totally different shows if you ask me they have nothing in common other then character names. All the characters act totally different from each other.

Honestly I like the old toon a bit more simply because the new toons comic adapted episodes let me down and with the old toon I had no expectations really. It didn't try and re-do a story that was written for adults and watered down for kids.

Let's compare the 2 in specific areas.

Music
OT: Beats the piss out of the NT, even episodes I hate can be enjoyable because of the awesome tunes.
NT: Decent, most of the really good ones were never repeated. The theme song sucks and they had those corny songs in CAW and one of those Augie episodes.

Voice Acting
Both featured great voice actors, but the OT guys were good at adding their own stuff to it.

Art
OT: Always had really nice background art but was inconsistent with character designs, normally good tho.
NT: Awesome. Extremely consistent, and just plain great looking all around. Both shows had great use of colors.

Humor
OT: I laugh out loud at this show constantly, a lot of subtle humore to it as well. I also like the 4th wall breaking stuff.
NT: Sorta funny, never really cracked me up other than a few moments.

Action
OT: Not what the show was all about, but everynow and then we'd get a good fight. Season 1 and Season 7 onward were good about the fights.
NT: Excellent fight choreography, really showed some balls at times.

Animation
Apples and Oranges here. 80's to 2003... But you can tell that the people working on the NT worked harder on it (turtles always talked out of their own mouths).

Popularity
OT wins by a land-slide.

I'll have to go with 2k3 as my favorite.

The OT has its moments, like the far more memorable music. And the first season is still one the the coolest things to come out of the TMNT. But beyond the first season it lost a lot of the consistency that made it so great was lost. Honestly, there were some pretty terrible episodes in the longer seasons. 2k3 has its weaker episodes as well, but it has much better consistency overall. I don't really care for most of the humor in the OT. Sure, as kid I found it funny, but now, most of the jokes don't do much for me. But then there's nostalgia. Although I prefer 2k3 now, I'll never be able to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the OT when I was younger, and that certainly counts for something.

Why do you feel the need to be that way?

On the topic at hand...I honestly don't care for the old toon that much. It's not my cup of tea even though I grew up with it.

I love what I've seen of the Red Sky seasons, and I love what I've read of the Archie comics, but I do not love the rest of the old toon universe.

I don't care if it's what really put the TMNT on the map, I don't care if it was more popular, I just don't like it that much.

The new toon (ignoring the spin-off, Fast Forward...which I really dislike!) is more of what I enjoy seeing when it comes to the turtles.

Good animation, excellent fight sequences, decent voice acting, great stories, and the moments where it liked to push the limits...all of these are qualities I enjoy about this series.

Also, the fact that it tries to stick close to the comics, and has adapted many of the issues, pleases me.

To me, the new toon is the "better" show because it's more to my liking, I don't care if others don't agree with me.

The new toon is far from perfect!

The voice acting isn't that hot, there are a few animation goofs from time to time, and some character development *cough*Mikey*cough* is really weak.

Also, there are a few eps I hate (mainly the superhero themed ones) and I will admit that Season 4 disappointed me more than once...but overall I enjoy it a lot.

Did eh actually say that? ouch.

I'd go with the old toon, honestly. It was more origional, felt like it worked ahrder at the material in context, was comedic, and created interesting new characters.

Although I do love the new series, particularly the Usagi Eps.

New turtles cos these guys are more like their true characters than the old corny cartoon. Raph is awesome in the 2k3 series and brilliant in the 2k7 movie. So I like all the modern stuff, they're the way they're supposed to be! Not silly inflatable looking kiddie wannabe ninjas who walk around in broad day light; that's some pretty bad ninja-ing!
I just prefer a more mature approach to my favorite heroes.

I do agree with a lot of the comparisons posted above though! Both did use color well for their respective styles. The music for 2k3 is okay, typical stock action noise..but it wouldn't work with OT! Both have/had great voice talent. Both have their merits, but I prefer the new stuff.

Again, why are you always such an asshole?

Why do you feel the need to walk around this site and pick fights with every board member who happens to dislike the old toon?

And what on Earth does my enjoyment of "Lois and Clark" have to do with it? When did I say I preferred "Lois and Clark" over the DCAU?

I said I preferred it over Superman: The Animated Series...not the entire DCAU...you would have noticed that had you actually payed attention.

I happen to love the various Bruce Timm Batman cartoons, enjoyed what little I got to see of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, got a kick out of the 4th season of Teen Titans, and am very much looking forward to Teen Titans: The Judas Contract.

I love Lois and Clark for it humor, drama, and romance. It's cheesy, but I like it regardless...I don't sit there and cringe whenever I watch it (Which, sadly, I do whenever I attempt to sit through the old toon).

The 2003 Teen Titans cartoon was very off the wall, it has a lot of humor...but it also had it's fare share of drama and interesting storylines that balance it nicely.

The old TMNT toon doesn't do it for me. To me it's corny (in a non-enjoyable way), it's very lacking when it comes to drama/action/storylines, and it's dreadfully boring. It's childish to me (considering it was pretty much a LARGE toy commerical, and nothing more), and I can't get into it.

For crying out loud, I can't stand any of the characters!

I don't know why you feel I should automatically love and blindly worship the old toon because of other shows I happen to like...but you really need to get over it.

You're not God, and I'm not some groupie who's going to bow down at your feet at your demand.

Why don't YOU quit trolling the board members who dislike the old toon, respect their opinion, and get on with your life.

They are both enjoyable in different ways. But I prefer the new toon cuz it has a more action and serious tone to it. Don't get me wrong I like a lot of the old episodes as well. But the inconsistency of their voices and bandana colors really bothered me at times. Plus the turtles themselves (their designs) were very inconsistent. That is up until the Red Sky Eps, which were also awesome.

In my opinion the new toon is far superior to the old in every way bar the theme song, and while nostalgia is good, I find it hard to understand how some fans haven't grown with the turtles and still prefer the old toon.
I'd out grown the turtles by the mid nineties, the goofy storylines just didn't appeal to me anymore and I fantasized about a TMNT toon like Batman animated, because to me, the turtles had so much potential that the old toon never tapped into.
The Image TMNT run got me back on the turtle track, I was 17 at the time, so these harder edged turtles naturally appealed to me more, then of course I discovered the holy grail of TMNT, the Mirage comics.
Naturally the older one gets, the more mature entertainment one seeks, well that's the way it is with me, which is why I find it hard to understand why some fans still prefer the old toon.
I'm not saying the new toon is a mature cartoon, but the darker tone, excellent storylines and better character developement appeal to me more because I'm older.
It's kinda like saying the Atari 2600 is better than the Xbox 360, well maybe on build quality you'd have me there lol.

For me, it`s the OT, but I also like NT.

OT brings back childhood memories, while I can enjoy NT now! ;)

Krang
09-25-2007, 03:11 AM
For me, it's the original cartoon by far. The characters were great (especially the bad guys), the music was very well done, the voice cast was excellent (except for the occasional replacements), and the show was always funny and enjoyable. Nostalgia is not a factor for me, because there are episodes that I've watched many times over the years along with episodes that I haven't seen since their original airing, and I enjoy both kinds.

Yes, the show was goofy, but that's what made it so fun to watch. Not everything has to follow the Mirage comics or be "dark and gritty" to be good, and "mature" does not equal "better." Besides, like it or not, the 2K3 cartoon is a kid's show, just like the OT. People who get all worked up about the OT and go on a rampage insulting it really need to stop taking cartoons so seriously and just sit back and enjoy them. That's what they're for: entertainment.

Speaking of which, let's please avoid getting into personal arguments in this thread. It's fine to say why you dislike a particular cartoon, but flat-out bashing it is just going to cause problems. On the other hand, even if people bash a cartoon you like, that's no reason to attack them. I've already seen some very unnecessary personal comments made in this thread, and that needs to stop.

ZariusTwo

I'll go with Krang's suggestion no more comparisons or the disrespectful OT thrashing continue, but first I'll address this.

In my opinion the new toon is far superior to the old in every way bar the theme song, and while nostalgia is good, I find it hard to understand how some fans haven't grown with the turtles and still prefer the old toon.

And I'll never understand why "modernists" and "purists" cant get over the fact that some fans beleive the Original had superior qualities. We are as fans equal in taste and preference, at least that should be practised far more than just catergorizing each other as "hard to understand". That's like saying "you like Sega? You loser, NES is the best", yet the friend he's picking on has BOTH consoles.

It's not just "memories", it's due to legitmate qualities that the OT has above the modern version. The day that is accepted is the day we have less uneccersary elitism and even lesser arguments.

It's kinda like saying the Atari 2600 is better than the Xbox 360, well maybe on build quality you'd have me there lol.

More like the SNES is better than the 360, which it is. I want to have fun and play side-scrollers sometimes, not bore myself to death with over-zealous RPGS that tell a story, not provide any gameplay or action unless it drives the plot every three to five hours.

Thankfully, not every 360 title is like that, but there's enough of it around to say "Oh sod this, I'll play something a little challenging that ISNT watered down by arcs and unnecersary battles that take a million potions to overcome whilst listening to unbearable Japanese music"

Well on top of that Red Sky was all connected, episode by episode just like the new series it became more of a series and less of the random **** happens episodes.

I was going by a mainstream view, as Red Sky was viewed strictly by fans as an improvment, and others in the mainstream saw those seasons as the moment the series jumped the shark.

They made new episodes for 3 years after that, if people didn't like it as much they would have stopped alot sooner. Like what they did with FF.

Do you have a reason as to why? Just wondering.
The only reason I ask is because I saw season 8 as a return to how the show started out and apricated that very much we even got casey who we hadn't seen since Night of the Rogues and he even takes on Shredder in one of my all time favorite fight scenes of the entire show.

Style- I do not like the new intro or character designs as much as the original run's ones.

Substance- Season 8 was good. It was seasons 9 and 10 the ones I did not care for.
Ah gotcha it's all good personally though I enjoyed the new look it was the most orig. Mirage the turtles have ever look on tv to me.

They made new episodes for 3 years after that, if people didn't like it as much they would have stopped alot sooner. Like what they did with FF.

With a much shorter number to the point it all seemed seemless.

The only reason I ask is because I saw season 8 as a return to how the show started out and apricated that very much we even got casey who we hadn't seen since Night of the Rogues and he even takes on Shredder in one of my all time favorite fight scenes of the entire show.

My thoughts exactly, a return to the show's roots. I still find the redesign for the turtles' masks kind of distracting, but all in all it was pretty awesome. And Casey takes on Shredder? Dang, I missed that sweet action. What episode was that? See, this is what happens when you actually become a responsible student and actually do your homework and assignments...you miss all the sweet action on your fav cartoon shows! Curse you, adulthood!! :P

I really felt that season seven was the return to the season ones roots. Season seven became more serious and action and urban oriented with out loseing it's charm and it's comedic roots. I dearly wish that season seven had been longer than just 14 episodes since it is my favorite season out of the whole series. Red sky although good when judged on it's wn merits the changes just came to abruptly and drastically for my likeing and I was turned off by it. Red Sky just felt like a despret attempt to be more like the movies and to compete against Power Rangers. Although I didn't care for most of season 9 and 10, I do think that season 8 was pretty good and had some good concepts and I actually liked the new more mature design of the turtles in Red Sky. I've been watching some episodes of Red Sky on Youtube andi have to say that I've changed my mind on few things, I like that the show tried to shake things up have Shredder act like a actual threat and destroy the channel six building, and that the Rat King finnally attacked the turtles in their own lair which ever since he has made his debut I've been waiting for him to do since they both live like next door to each other, so that was sweet to finnaly see happen. But I thought it was a real interesting twist to have April become adament about having a career that isn't supported by the turtles exploits. You sort of get the idea that she is fed up with the turtles at this point, which shocking!

Then season nine and ten roll along and things start to get weird. I didn't care for Dregg as a villan (even though I adore his voice actor, rest in peace Tony Jay  ) but I thought it was a nice and acceptable twist that he caused the turtles to be openly pursecuted (to me that was a nice pay off as a viwer to see people in New York not so Okay with four mutant freaks walking around in broad day light) and that the turtles start to have an icey feeling toward people. However I wasn't to pleased with it's exacution, and I was saddened that the channel six people where phased out. I thought the angle of Burn's and Vernon (who have mostly been comedic characters up till this point) become active pursecutors of the turtles and them spreadiing lies of them was good and they should have been kept around.

I hated the fact that the turtles mutations got out of control, to me that seemd like a shamelss plug to pull in ratings and to make the show more edgy, and I didn't like how the writters made it that the turtles relyed on their mutations to win a fight. To me it just made them weak, they would be a set up for a good fight and sudden;y they couldn't win the day unless they all went indredable Hulk. And Inever cared for Carter or how he seemed to replace April as the turtles human friend. Although there where a few good episodes out of season nine and ten.
