TMNT Engine is a project that I have been working on since 2006 to recreate Konami's 1989 Classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade game from scratch using ripped graphics and coded in Multimedia Fusion 2.

It features 2 new levels, a dojo stage to mess about and "spawn" enemies.
It also features a online score table.

Good stuff. Plays a bit differently than the original arcade game but it's a great reproduction of it. It gives me hope that, with this engine, other original TMNT-based projects can be done.

Exactly, with this TMNT Engine other TMNT fan based creations can be made, infact thats my intention for when this engine is near complete.

No chance of Jesus Mutant Ninja Turtles?

lol, Jesus: The Arcade Game reached the demo stages, but is no longer in production.

Its a perfect example of an original game that can be made with the TMNT Engine.
Which can be found for download here.

It's "wonderfully politically incorrect"

Will there be any way, once this is complete, to play "cut-and-paste" or have some sort of editing tool for people who are programming impaired?

Many have requested that the program be open-source but as of yet there is no intention of it being so.

However there may be a way of creating a basic select the background and stick the baddies on idea (but you could only use the already programmed content) but that would need to be coded completely seperate for it to possibly work as the coding requires loads of invisible objects and detectors, but its not out of the question.

Is there any chance you could do an engine of "Turtles in Time" next?

It would be cool to be able to plop enemies and objects down anywhere in a stage and then play through. It would make for some interesting "TMNT Arcade: Chalenge Mode" kind of games.

Very cool, but if it's just nothing more or less than a recreation of the arcade game with the same graphics... what would make someone be interested in this, rather than just quickly downloading the TMNT arcade game's ROMs off the internet and playing it arcade-perfect on MAME?

I think "The Simpsons" would most likely be the next game I remake (if I do so choose to make another engine).

It would be cool to be able to plop enemies and objects down anywhere in a stage and then play through. It would make for some interesting "TMNT Arcade: Chalenge Mode" kind of games.

In theory yeah it would be amazing, but actually making it work is another thing. With that said, once the engine is done, anything is possible from my perspective. Definatly going to do my own TMNT game (introducing things from the other TMNT games i.e Stone Warriors)

I answered this very question in my Q/A.

Why don't you just play the real arcade game or use emulators?
I still do play the arcade game, as I own the arcade machine, but I'm doing this to pay homage to the game and it has been somthing I've wanted to do for a long long time. Unlike emulators this allowes me to add my own material to the game, new characters, levels, attacks, props everything and anything.

Building the engine is the first step, and what better way to make it perfect than to make it nearly exactly the way it is.

Yeah, if you're going to do all that I'll very much look forward to checking out the finished game.

I think it would be fun to make a Mirage version of the TMNT arcade game. Remove the letters from the belts, make all the bandannas red, make the Foot look like the Mirage Foot (and make them human), add in blood, etc..

Well, why not just play the original arcade version? But I guess one must try to recreate the classics of arcade beat em' up. The Jesus Arcade game seems a bit out there, but It's just as well seeing how the engine can be used. I'm sure if Jesus knew he died for idiots that didn't care for what he was about then he prolly would be out to smack around those guys that didn't care. So I guess in theory, the fan game would be correct, for the most part. ;)

These are known problems, the enemies disapearing is infact that 2 enemies have died at the same time and it only registered 1, thus the screen fails to scroll.

The wall problem has been there since version 1, it when walking on two seperate axis designed to block you from going out of screen (this is most noticable with the diagnol wall at the end of level 1).

As for can you have 2,3 or 4 players, currently no.
If this is to be implemented, odds are it will be a near final version, as for online co-op this is somthing that may not be possible (it would require that I had a skilled team to implement this feature).

Easy to make, only I hated the game.

The Shelf
12-20-2007, 09:55 AM
You could use an enhanced version of the engine you're working on to create a better version of the first TMNT game. You'd probably have to create some new images for the backgrounds, though, and you'd have to add the van and underwater portions to your engine since the arcade game didn't have those.

In other words, what I'm saying is, you could recreate the first TMNT game with the arcade game's graphics, physics, and gameplay mechanics, but add portions to the arcade game's engine to handle the van and underwater portion. You could replace bad guys from the first game with bad guys from the arcade game. Etc. Etc. It would be a lot of work, but it can be done.

jasonorme666
12-20-2007, 12:20 PM
It would be very easy to make, using this engine however would make it more difficult, making it from scratch would be easier.

But I have no desire at this time to re-create the original TMNT as I was never a fan of the game.

However re-creating for example the 2 levels that were only in the NES version of the arcade game are somthing that can be done (as I am also a spritist and animator).

Also things like re-creating "The Manhatten Project" is also possible.

If I'm understanding this correctly, this project is basically a mix between Streets of Rage Remake and Beats of Rage - only Turtlefied? I downloaded a demo of this ages ago, and at the time I was like... "It's just the arcade game." Now, however, it looks like ye are going beyond that.

jasonorme666
12-27-2007, 10:15 AM
The engine is being designed first (replicating the arcade game) so once complete turtle fan games can be created from it.
What better way to make sure your making a TMNT game right than to remake one completely.

This is the first step.

This however is completely coded from scratch unlike those beat em ups which use the OpenBor system (which just doesn't work for Konami beat em ups).

I'm including that Bonus level for people that just "didnt get it" and indeed said "why not just play the real game", thus giving them somthing extra aswell as an example of what can be done with the engine once complete (or as it is now, in a partial state).

Once complete, anything can be done with this, if I wanted to play as a foot soldier and fighting my way through the game, I could. If I wanted to play as Bart Simpson and fighting an army of ninja turtles, I could.

If I wanted to fill a level full of Rocksteady and Bebops, I could. There are so many possibilities with this engine, that bonus level only took 5 hours so imagine how many TMNT Fan-games could be produced using the existing content and this engine.

I noticed in that video that the Foot Soldiers' recovering sprites had the wrong palettes (for example, a Boomerang Foot getting up was purple).

Are their any specifics on the fangame reproduction side of things? Are things like unlockables (levels, characters, palettes) and cutscenes going to be possible? How about multiple types of attacks (shuriken throwing, special attacks)? Gigantic bosses?

jasonorme666
12-28-2007, 04:31 AM
The pallete animation swaps is simply due to me not having changed the color yet (I mentioned it on the video info).

When it comes to fan-games and using the engine, anything is possible, there are really no limitations other than 3D.
It does however require coding knowledge and wouldnt simply be some drag and drop feature.

I will no doubt be releasing a seriese of examples of what can be done with the engine, that one being the first example.

You could even turn the engine into more of an RPG style, i.e you get Exp points per kill until you level up (thus dealing more damage).

Oh, now THAT is cool!

I figured it wouldn't be drag-&-drop (most of those games suck anyway)... but I hope it's not like, excruciatingly hard to work.

I might just completely scrap the Game Maker version of my TMNT fangame and port the work over to your engine when it's finished (since I'm still in the midst of a Mario one that I need to finish before I continue the TMNT one).

Another new feature of version 0.8 is what i've called The Dojo. Its bassically a test feild in which the player can click the icons of corresponding enemies/bosses to spawn them on screen and beat the hell out of them.

The reason behind this is a way to playtest the engine without having to go through the levels, thus being able to study the enemies attack and movement patterns, check the collision detection etc.

I may also introduce a feature to spawn the many props you can use to your advantage i.e parking metres and explosive oil drums.

Below are some pictures.

As you can see in the screenshots a few posts above that originally he was.
But due to problems with his movement I had to remove him.

Bassically he used a movement system that was set so he would appear at a point in the sewer level. Due to the length of the dojo level he appeared way way off screen. Changing it so he would appear in the dojo meant that he wouldnt appear correctly in the sewer level.

He will be added though, just on a later version.

Yep, there is a known bug with the stoppers (what prevents Leonardo from walking across the background).

The bugs have been worked out that prevent the scrolling so i'm unsure as to why this happenes. Luckily the bug key is still present and should correct the problem, simply press [1] until the screen continues to scroll.

Are you experiencing this problem with any other levels?

I don't know considering all those scores and names entered are fake and put in via the mySQL database. I don't even know what number my game currently goes upto (312 was always the top displayed score on the arcade machine).

Another nice feature is the top player will get their name and score displayed on the screen for players connected to the internet to see.

The newest update is really cool but when are you gonna make it possible to play as the other turtles? :P

I've answered this question so many times (think I may add it to the about page).

The easiest and fastest way to implement the other turtles into the game is when Leonardo is 100% complete, by that I mean he is able to fight every enemy, kill every boss, be hit by every enemy, boss, prop, projectile and is able to hit anything that he can.

The hard part is the sprite ripping (and unfortunatly i've found no one to help, so it looks like i'm doing it myself), i've bassically got to sprite rip all the other 3 turtles then I can copy all of Leonardo's code and replace it with each of the turtles. When done, some minor tweeks and you will have all 4 turtles.

But the time I have all 4 turtles will pretty much be when the engine is done, all updates after that point will be bug fixes/tweeks etc.

Another new feature of version 0.9 is that losing all your health now makes you lose a life.. losing all lives resorts in Game Over!

From the levels select screen you will be granted 9 lives, but once they are gone, thats it. This makes the online scoreboard alittle more fair as if you start from the first level and do well, odds are you will have a higher score. Start from a later level you will of course have a lower score (depending on how you do of course).

Version 0.9 is set for release in february.

TMNT Engine V.0.9 has been released and includes level 5 part 1 and 2 aswell as the scoreboard feature.

You can submit your score in-game and view it online on the scoreboard page. The top 10 scores are displayed in on the in-game scoreboard and the top score is displayed on every level in the “Top” player box.

Check it out, let me know what you think, just click the link in my sig

The game plays good, but in level 2 I also keep on getting lost and Leo doesn't appear on the screen.

I just got around to playing version 8, very good job! It's an awesome recreation of the game, and some added features will be great too. The level select is pretty handy.

I dont know if this bug has been reported but when u do the special move where you press jump and attack at the same time, that if you hold down the both buttons after that you stay in the air flying around and when you smash into enemies leonardo performs that special move again.

Just wondering: will the engine be able to do something like this: http://megaterror.freeweb7.com/tmntgame/tmnt-thegame.html ?

Totally awesome!

Looks like I won't have to finish the tedious Game Maker coding on this, then! :D

Hmm... maybe. I still want to see what your engine brings to the table in terms of customization. Besides, recall the release date on my product? It won't be out until 2009 for the 25th Anniversary.

By the way, I'm downloading the newest revision of your program now (have been backlogged and haven't had a chance ^^; )

EDIT: How the deuce does one get on the high score table? Because my score of 208 should have cemented me at Third Place, and I didn't even get on the board... o.O

The scoreboard feature is only available on version 0.9

Once you have completed the current final level (the skateboard level) or when you die will you be sent to the scoreboard.

Also make sure you are connected (check your connection status via the title screen).

Yeah. All of those requirements were met.

you shouldnt have a problem getting on the scoreboard then.

Note: Dojo and bonus levels do not count.

(Scratches head) I'm nonplussed, then. The scores loaded, and The top score was someone with 232 points (I think their username was Sean or Seth or something with numbers afterward). I played from level 1 to the end of the skateboarding level with 208 points. When the high score list was repopulated after this, I should have been #3 on the list. However, I didn't make the board.

I'll try again when I get home and see if it was just something random.

Version 1.0 has now been out since Feb 2009, it was mainly a re-release fixing a couple of bugs, but it was also to celebrate it reaching 10,000 download. Since then we have hit over 100,000.

Since then however i've been working on a new project which uses a re-worked version of the TMNT engine.

I tried to do just that years ago using Multimedia Fusion, but stopped because the end result tends to be full of bugs with that program.

I should do something like that but now using beats of rage.

The only bugs you get our the ones you code yourself.
I had one the other day that was driving me mad, thought it was infact a bug within the software, turned out i'd checked something wrong, took hour to find it though through all the lines of coding.

I don't like using OpenBOR (beats of rage), is just isn't flexible enough.
Great for those stiff feeling Capcom games games though.

Hello, Jason. I remember back in the day you sent me the demo of the 2k3 game. Long time no see.

It's true that OpenBOR game are like those Capcom games but I still would like to try it out (in like 3 years when I have the time)

The Spongebob game looks amazing.

OpenBOR is great if you want to see your ideas come to life fast, and its very easy to use (something i'd have killed to use 10 years ago). I worked with it abit but I always go back to what i'm used to, very much set in my ways. I've been using the MMF style coding system since 1998 so I find I can work with it much faster than any other software.

I don't remember sending a demo of the 2k3 game.. would have been a long time ago. Was it the GameBoy Advance one by any chance?
