Another episode that I don't really like, but it had some funny parts.
I thought the Tatsu bridge was a tight reference until they showed that it was actual Japanese.
Does anyone else remember the fight with the water turtle demons being alot better?

See I'm telling you guys the lost season isn't all everyone was making it out to be.
It's not the worst thing ever but it's really just not that great.

well yeah most things do look better, I just feel that if I want to watch Anime knock off shows I can watch about any other kids show on tv today with a few exceptions.

Can we please not drag the FF vs. LS thing into this, Putrescent? Thanks, it's getting old.
The episode was OK, but I really hate that they say the name of the move they're making as they do it. That screams anime knockoff. At least the visuals are pretty, but I think the storytelling is kinda clumsy compared to the earlier seasons.

I must be easy to please, because I enjoyed this episode a lot, just like the last one. And the Lost season is brand new to me as I didn't see it before. Not to mention I also liked most of FF as well.
Its just Ninja Turtles, a show meant to have good fun with it in addition to the plotlines. I've learned to stop being so nitpicky with everything in the past, and because of that I enjoy the episodes a lot more.

Um I didn't say anything about Fast Forward at all, I just said I'm tired of anime and how american cartoons want to be like it so badly that it's sickening.
You madam are the only one who brought FF into this discussion.
Oh and here let me quote myself.

I agree with Putrescent. I saw the entire thing on youtube and I was not impressed. What's worse, this episode is just the beginning of how the fights throughout the series would be like. Lots of twirly magic things and not real combat.

Also, the Tribunal is the sorriest group of teachers ever. They don't even attempt to teach the turtles that "chi" bull until a few episodes later (by which time they've basically learned it themselves).

Despite the cheesiness, it did manage to build tension better than all the previous seasons though. Even though some of the things are pretty predictable, I'm just not sure what they did differently that still allows for some tension to draw you in.
This ep was better than the previous one in that we got a good fight sequence this time. Also, the Tribunal pretty much showed why Splinter hates them in this ep. Perhaps they actually are the bad guys.
If you already know better, don't say anything. Maybe we'll get a discussion going here. ^_^

Yes but you are accusing me of doing something I didn't I know jumping to conclusions is a great game and all and I love Fast Forward *mostly* but that was not the case of what's going on here. And it didn't seem all that polite to me ;)
Like I said you're the only one who brought it up, I didn't say anything about the dead show.
Most people here are still in the mind set of a year ago where I would defend Fast Forward over a drop of the hat the show is over and I don't care.
And I think most people are starting to get tired of all the Anime copy cat shows.
Anyway like 4kids I'm dropping this like one of their half baked ideas.

I've enjoyed all the episodes so far, and I've seen some, not all on Youtube. I refrained from watching too much because I didn't want to spoil to much of the season when it finally did air. The magical combat thing did bother me at first, but it just elevates the series to another level. After four previous seasons, the turtles did just about everything but use magic and fight demons. I mean, they fought aliens, traveled to other dimensions, went back in time, fought the governmet, two incarnations of the Shredder, giant nanotech robots, mutated bugs, people from the lost city of Atlantis, their slaves, cowboys with ray guns, super powered French guys and a host of nameless, faceless ninja.
It adds a new spin to the show, but the turtles are still the same turtles I've grown to enjoy. It's been fun seeing them deal with all the weirdness as only they can and Mikey's "I'm never giving these back" line was great. As was Leo never giving in despite not having a fancy weapon. He was the turtle to get the box, and showed that they were chosen for their inner resolve, not just their physical abilities. (I know, I know, that did sound a bit corny, didn't it?)

I like season 5 because the turtles save the entire world from being enslaved by demons. Some people don't think the turtles should save the world which is why they don't care much for the lost season. or the fact that they feel it's just plain corny (magic and dragons and what not).
I don't watch anime so I personally did not get the "cheap anime knockoff" feeling. For one who does not watch anime, season five is a cool new spin on ninja turtles

If you ask me, fans decided to "hate" TLS because of not just it's overexposure, multiple viewings making it no longer "exclusive", the sheer majority that criticised FF ("You hate my season, I'll hate yours back"), or the mainstream anime backlash, but all the crappy Leo/Karai fanart and fanfiction went out the f*cking window:lol:
TLS is actually ABOVE most present animes in writing and characterisations. Doesnt say a whole darn lot about the genre these days either...

I too hate the anime-zation of modern American cartoons. The end.
You know, I don't mind anime-zi-zation that much, but everyone seems to get it wrong. I think 2k3 WAS heavily anime inspired from the get go. But we didn't have Mikey mucking about in Super D form and odd cut scenes and stuff like that. They decided to play it toned down, just using similar little things vis a vis plot and camera angles... and that weird wide screen thing that pops up every so often. Wasn't there a shot by shot reference to Akira in one episode (or am I thinking of Teen Titans?)
Personally, while I can't say I'm loving this plot line, I'm really liking it. Sure, it borrows heavily from Naruto, hand jivin' and all that... but I still love all this 2k3 TMNT goodness. I do enjoy FF, myself, but I fogrot how much I loved the original 2k3 not having seen it in so long outside of DVD's or taped off the air tapes.

OK, I'll clarify. :)
Not all anime influences are bad. Avatar is good because it uses its anime influence to support the story, instead of the other way around as the bad ripoffs do. Some of the visual influences of the earlier 2k3 seasons (the standard "speed" background, for one) played the same support role IMO. And they never went too far with it. (though Leo holding the Sword of Tengu in Return to NY was close, heh)
My problem with the Lost Season anime influence so far is that it's overriding the "Turtle" feel. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles don't need to announce their attacks as they do them. ("Neck Snap!" *crunch* and the like.) They just kick butt as ninjas do, silent and efficient. The glowy chi stuff is OK enough, as a visual representation of increased focus, but I can see it becoming a powerup-type deal so easily in the future.
In this episode it made me happy to see Mikey really take to using his focus for stealth... but of course they had to trivialize it by making him goof it up every time. By the end he probably should have been able to get it right, but there goes their plot device, right?
I dunno, my feelings are so mixed. Some things are done the good ol' way, but then some things are so awkwardly thrown together. I love some things and squirm at others. Splinter looks absolutely awesome this season, and I love him being back in the role of protective father. And yet as I watch I can't help but criticize writing and storyboarding choices, where in regular 2k3 I was usually very appreciative of them. Hence my "clumsy storytelling" complaint.
I really hope this gets better... I'd hate to have to give up on another season of Turtles. :(
And re: Putrescent: Sorry if I offended you, but your history does indeed suggest that you would bring that up, even if you're better about it now. I was just trying to stop that line of discussion before it started, as you were already in "told you so" mode. But whatever... I'm willing to drop it if you are. :)

The season is over and while I'm not happy about it I keep my opinions about Fast Forward in threads about those episodes.
I was not in any sort of mood or mind set at all, I was simply saying how these episodes are not as great as everyone has been preaching they are.
And everything you just said is what I was talking about exactly, You get it.
I will say one final time now These Episodes Are Only Ok They Are Not Great But They Are Not Sacks Of Crap Either, Got It? Good!
And Yes they do get better, quite frankly I wish they would have gone with the entire world take over thing by demons and zombies only, intead of all of this mystic stuff.

2k3 from the beginning has always implemented attributes of anime in the show. Until now, they've just been a little more subtle. With the Lost Season airing, it's jumping out clearer to us because it's using more anime attributes than usual and we've never paid as much attention to it before in earlier seasons.
Remember the scene when Leo cut off Shredder's head? It was all done in wide screen black box, as one person has already mentioned. It was a dramatic and anime way to show it. I've always thought it was cool, and the Lost Season is just as cool.
The anime attributes has never really bothered me. It may be that I've never been into anime, except for Pokemon. So I guess I'm not spoiled in that way.

Ummm no, they've been doing this in movies forever, it's nothing new, especially in animation, even though yes it's very cool.
And Film has been around a heck of allot longer than Anime, so i mean really, not chicken or egg question here.

I've never been a fan of anime and I don't watch the shows people are comparing this to. That said, it does strike me as a little weird when Raph can turn into a razor blade or Mike can run like the Flash. It almost seems too far-fetched.
Those aspects don't bother me much, and I can enjoy the episode, so it's cool. These episodes have beautiful visuals so far. The writing is good but sketchy like always in 2k3. Nice to see the Ancient One again, too.

I love some anime, but I consider myself an anime hater. I can't get enough Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, or Gundam Wing, great shows. Then I like Digimon, Pokemon and DBZ for nostalgic reasons.
But when you keep seeing the same old **** all the time with energy aura's, groups of elite fighters and the sort, plus all the Yugioh ********! it gets old. Then you have **** even worse than anime created by and for Americans that is just a half ass cartoon.

That is the number 1 most disappointing aspect of TLS. Trust... it gets WORSE. What you saw was just a hint of what's to come in terms of "fighting" throughout most of the series. It's not 100% like that and there are some traditional fights, but when they use their magic powers it'll only get worse. You'll probably see a hint of it in the next episode.

I loved the changing aspect ratios they did a lot in 2k3 - it may be an anime technique but in context of Turtles it always made me think of comic panels. Especially when they'd throw up 2 or more panels showing the scene from different angles.

Season 5 was exciting the first time I watched it, then I thought about it and the appeal of the episodes being new wore off and I just don't care to much for them.
The animation is horrid, I know I said this before but honestly stacked up to the rest of the series the backgrounds just look terrible. It also contains the worst episode of any turtles series in the history of Ninja Turtles, Fathers and Sons...ugh.
I mean it's not the worst thing ever and I see why people like it but I think allot of people are making excuses for it because it's different and new. I mean when it first came out everyone was all excited about it now that it's airing however I see more negativity towards it and I think people are starting to see it for more then something special.

There's further proof for you that they're actually trying to bring to mind the experience of reading a comic. Anime never came to mind when I saw that technique.

I agree with that. I haven't seen much anime, but I'm glad to see the series take a turn with the fantasy aspect of things. Sure, it may not be the best fight scenes as previously shown, but it's better than having nothing to fight about. Plus, I love the fact that there are better villains than in that other show I watched.
Okay, now I'll actually give you a rating of the episode in terms of plot. I loved it for the plot aspect. It was great to see the Turtles achieve chi energy and to get their weapons. When Leo didn't get his, I was a little disappointed, but I know from watching these episodes elsewhere that he will get his moment to shine. I absolutely loved Mikey's imitating the Tribunal and his sneaking across the bridge, as well as his line, "Real world this!" to Leo. Seeing Leo get hurt was dramatic as always, but that's what I liked about it. I also loved Splinter's overprotectiveness of his sons, something I've missed for a long time. It was also great to see The Ancient One and to hear him chastise Mikey in the way he did.
Overall, I thought this episode was great, and I'm looking forward to seeing all the others as well. Who cares if it rips off anime? At least we're getting the Lost Season shown on TV, and I think that's what we need to be thankful for. Forget all the negative aspects of it and just be thankful that we have anything new to watch at all.

You know what bugs me about when someone adopts anime? They only adopt certain things, and make a gross generalization about them. Look at Loonatics. That was supposedly "anime" inspired. By inspired, I mean, of course, some guy saw 5 minutes of Dragon Ball Z and decided to take the most obvious flavors out of them, and exploit it.
It's like saying all Western animation is Looney Tunes and taking something from that as a "Western Inspired show."
No No No!
Not every Anime is Naruto or DBZ. There are pretty much sitcom-y style shows like Kochikame, kid's edutainment like Doramon, and random others I'm too lazy to list.
to tie in with this:
It's taken over everything, it's like music now there's no variety.
It was fine for awhile but now it's just like everything else, I grow tired of it and would like to see other things be given a chance.
What bugs me about this is the only animes that have taken over are popular ones. And there's little variety in those ones. Gundum/Cowboy Bebop/Akira knockoffs for boys, Whiney "I'm so ugly dispite the fact I'm drawn the ssame as every other girl, and guy in this comic" Shojos. That's why I bust a gut when they brought Shin-chan over here. Problem is, they tend to make the dub sound like a Family Guy knockoff. If something truely original came over here (why I mentioned unpopular ones in the states earlier), then I'd pay attention. That said, I'm loving Nerima Daikon Brothers.
EDIT

I did enjoy this episode and I thought that in terms of plot that it did better than the previous episode. I enjoyed the first tribunal guy about stealth, and how he was trying to explain the the three pillars of ninjitsu disipline.
I think this episode really emphasised the terrible resentment Splinter has against the tribunal. With just cause. I liked how the writers gave Splinter Splinter's dream with him running in terror with his sons as the Shredder chases them them down and kills his sons and then the vision of Master yoshi appearing before Splinter and them dying in front of him sent a very clear message on why he feels as bitter as he doesw toward the tribunal. Because of the Tribunal and their lack of regard for him, he lost Yoshi, so of course he is bitter about it. Now because the tribunal need fighters to champion their cause, the tribunal want to send the turtles potencialy to their deaths just to save their artifact, with out a care to the turtles safety. The Tribunal are trying to take another thing from Splinter that he loves and he is peed off about it.
The tribunal are a cold ends-justify-the-means lot of bastards who really have little care for any one but there own gain. Yes, in this instance of the tengue Shredder being an evil menace that is a threat to the world makes their desire to get the last artifact a noble one justifying their calculating at-all-costs attitudes toward the acolytes. However if the worlds safety wheren't in danger the Tribunals calus high handed manner toward the acolytes for the protection of their artifact, they would still have little concern for their safety. And Splinter knows this, which is why he is so distraut over the turtles involvment in this whole ore deal. For the first time in the series you really see Splinter react scared with what the turtles are involved in due to how mercinary the Tribunal is. Up until this point no matter how over their heads the turtles have gotten into Splinter has always had some measure of control of the situation. I really felt Splinter's fatherly grief when he woke up from his dream and looked around at his blissfully sleeping sons and lowered his head and said a bit helplessly "oh, what have you gotten your selves into". :( A good Splinter moment here.
But enough about Splinter, I also really enjoyed other things about this episode as well. I enjoyed seeing my turtles acting more like them selves again. I felt really bad for leo in this episode with all the pushing around he endured, it must have been a bit humilating for him to be the only one not to get a weapon when every one else--even slacker Mikey who was taken to task twice in this episode, got a weapon from the fire forge. Speaking of the forge I loved seeing Raphael step up and act like his old kick ass self again. This is the good ol' Raphael that I remember :D back again with his "oh, I know your not talking smack about master Splinter" self and going up to that fire and showing that cocky weapons dude what Splinter's students are all about. Man I love it when Raphael gets like that, and he has the most perfect "f*ck off, buddy" way of doing it LOL!
I also liked the bit in the beginning where Mikey is making fun of the Tribunal, LOL I don't normally find Mikey's antics laugh out loud funny, but for reason he had me giggling with his poking fun of the tribunal, as well as his out spoken "oh crap" expression when that huge stealth guy showed up behind him. Incidently I noticed that Mikey was getting picked on a bit in this episode too. Not only was he picked to do the bridge thing (even though it was both Raph and Mikey making fun of Leo, The Ancient One seems to have taken a page from the turtles book and goes up side Mikey's head at every given chance **sigh** I think he smacked him at least four times in ten minutes, even when Mikey was trying to talk his way through the whole focusing thing and trying to seriously attempt it (and it was cool to see him succeed at it), and then agian when he asked to do a do over (with the bridge incident) when I think Mikey was actually genuanly asking to try again since he messed up. One thing that sort of suprised me though was Mikey sort of talking back to Leo when they went up against the kappa demons, when Leo said to keep their fighting in reality, and Mikey says "reality this" and focuses his chi to zap himself over to the chest. It supriced me because I notice that Mikey less likely to talk back to Leo than even Don is when it comes to battle situations, and Mikey's remark I took as a mild form "screw you" to Leo. :o
BubblyShell22
02-28-2008, 07:19 AM
Yeah, I took Mikey's remark that way, too. I think he was just saying that he knew what he was doing and he was going to try to get the box. It ended up being Leo who got the box and who suffered the "incomprehensible pain" mentioned earlier.
Yes, I like the way they have written Splinter too. In the other show, he didn't seem as protective of his sons as he should have been, while in this show he's more like his old self. I like that. And his dream was awesome too, although hearbreaking.
I think "Enter: The Jammerhead" was the only >> ep where they went out of their way to show Splinter's protective side.

God I miss those days. we only have three pages and we are already on friday, yeesh. :ohwell: And what ever happen to the quotes poll we used to have with every discussion? Where we got to vote on our favorite quote in the episode. :(
Yeah, I took Mikey's remark that way, too. I think he was just saying that he knew what he was doing and he was going to try to get the box.
It supriced me because Mikey doesn't ushually mouth off like that to Leo, except for maybe in a ironic sort of way but Mikey seemed like he was genuanly brushing him off. Maybe Mikey was feeeling a little full of himself because he had gotten a weapon from the forge and Leo didn't because the fire rejected him. Although how nice of it of the writers to let Mikey have a cool moment of seriousness and actually acomplish something important (like focusing his chi to get himself over to the chest) and then have him undermine himself by screwing it up by calling attention to himself  And make the situation worse. God, they really use Mikey as a plot device far to often :x
I will say that I liked the fight between the acolytes and the kappa demons. I liked how the fact that the kappas could change into water made tradional fighting methods useless. I konow that the chi use seems really anime-ish and silly but I like the idea of the turtles not being able to fight a super natural menace with physical means and have to fight with a spiritual fighting technique. The only thing I found corny and irritating was the shouting out the name of the weapons as they used them thing. That was an eye roller, as big an eye roller as the turtles shouting out "it's ninja time" in FF . And yet again the Tribunal show what calculating bastards they are when they are voice their disdain over Leo and that other dude getting hurt and how they should have been left behind, even though it was Leo that made it possiable to rescue the damn chest in the first place. What i did find saticfying was Splinter getting up in the tribunal's faces over their disregard for his sons welfare and practically demanding that they thank them for risking their lives to save their artifact. And speaking of the artifact, did any one think it was just plain stupididy on the Tribunals part to leave a important, powerful artifactm that they them selves said could cause the down fall of the world OUT IN THE OPEN where any one can get at it, when it was supposed to be heavily gaurded? And yet the Tribunal still have the gall to act self important about it.

Best part:
Raph's attitude when getting his funky new weapon, and the big grin on his face when he showed them. Like a little boy in a candy shop!
He shows a little protectiveness towards Joy already...<3 Awwwww
Later he shows interest in so many words....oh no turtle wants human, everybody FREAK out.
Mikey knows he can focus he's just gotta get that cockyness behind him, dance around AFTER you get the chest on the other side!

See I'm telling you guys the lost season isn't all everyone was making it out to be.
It's not the worst thing ever but it's really just not that great.
It started off slow, but it got pretty intense towards the latter half.

No reason why the boys can't show affection for humans. They are basically human at heart

I know that it's all the guys who get bent outta shape about them being attracted to humans that cracks me up, so I have to tease. :P Everything about them is human except their body. Big deal.

Well at least he wasn't made the damsel in distress here, he still helped his brothers fight the tengu and secure the artifact, it was the human acolytes that fell into the "damsel in distress" category.
but he still caused incident with the kappaseto notice him by being all loud calling attetion to himself and nedding to be rescued, so he did get put in a sort of "damsel in distress" situation in a way.
And I liked the fact that Raphael was acting all protective of Joy, it about time he showed an interest with a girl like Don and Leo have (well argubly). Are there other times in this season where Raphael pays attention to Joy?

Yea a few times. While on the boat he's trying to sound casual that if she's in the neighborhood to 'look them up' in other words he think she's hot and wants to spend more time with her :P

What I ment is that Mikey had a moment where he kind of disobeys Leo and pretty much tells him "screw it" I'll do this my way (which is something you would never see Mikey do especially to Leo who he seems to really respect him) and take the inticative to take control of the situation and act seriously for once, and then mess it up by making a joke out of it. I'm ok I guess with Mikey having ADHD problems and all, but it just irks me that when alot of time (not all) when Mikey is given a chance to break the mold on his character and do something seriously, the writers got to make a joke out of it. :ohwell:
