"Demons and Dragons" episode discussion

Another episode that I don't really like, but it had some funny parts.

I thought the Tatsu bridge was a tight reference until they showed that it was actual Japanese.

Does anyone else remember the fight with the water turtle demons being alot better?

See I'm telling you guys the lost season isn't all everyone was making it out to be.
It's not the worst thing ever but it's really just not that great.

I still like it just fine, and it looks better on screen than on Youtube.

Can we please not drag the FF vs. LS thing into this, Putrescent? Thanks, it's getting old.

The episode was OK, but I really hate that they say the name of the move they're making as they do it. That screams anime knockoff. At least the visuals are pretty, but I think the storytelling is kinda clumsy compared to the earlier seasons.

I must be easy to please, because I enjoyed this episode a lot, just like the last one. And the Lost season is brand new to me as I didn't see it before. Not to mention I also liked most of FF as well.

Its just Ninja Turtles, a show meant to have good fun with it in addition to the plotlines. I've learned to stop being so nitpicky with everything in the past, and because of that I enjoy the episodes a lot more.

Um I didn't say anything about Fast Forward at all, I just said I'm tired of anime and how american cartoons want to be like it so badly that it's sickening.
You madam are the only one who brought FF into this discussion.
Oh and here let me quote myself.

I agree with Putrescent. I saw the entire thing on youtube and I was not impressed. What's worse, this episode is just the beginning of how the fights throughout the series would be like. Lots of twirly magic things and not real combat.

Also, the Tribunal is the sorriest group of teachers ever. They don't even attempt to teach the turtles that "chi" bull until a few episodes later (by which time they've basically learned it themselves).

Despite the cheesiness, it did manage to build tension better than all the previous seasons though. Even though some of the things are pretty predictable, I'm just not sure what they did differently that still allows for some tension to draw you in.

This ep was better than the previous one in that we got a good fight sequence this time. Also, the Tribunal pretty much showed why Splinter hates them in this ep. Perhaps they actually are the bad guys.
Spoiler:
If you already know better, don't say anything. Maybe we'll get a discussion going here. ^_^

It was only a polite request, yeesh.

I too hate the anime-zation of modern American cartoons. The end.

Yes but you are accusing me of doing something I didn't I know jumping to conclusions is a great game and all and I love Fast Forward *mostly* but that was not the case of what's going on here. And it didn't seem all that polite to me
Like I said you're the only one who brought it up, I didn't say anything about the dead show.
Most people here are still in the mind set of a year ago where I would defend Fast Forward over a drop of the hat the show is over and I don't care.
And I think most people are starting to get tired of all the Anime copy cat shows.
Anyway like 4kids I'm dropping this like one of their half baked ideas.

I've enjoyed all the episodes so far, and I've seen some, not all on Youtube. I refrained from watching too much because I didn't want to spoil to much of the season when it finally did air. The magical combat thing did bother me at first, but it just elevates the series to another level. After four previous seasons, the turtles did just about everything but use magic and fight demons. I mean, they fought aliens, traveled to other dimensions, went back in time, fought the governmet, two incarnations of the Shredder, giant nanotech robots, mutated bugs, people from the lost city of Atlantis, their slaves, cowboys with ray guns, super powered French guys and a host of nameless, faceless ninja.

It adds a new spin to the show, but the turtles are still the same turtles I've grown to enjoy. It's been fun seeing them deal with all the weirdness as only they can and Mikey's "I'm never giving these back" line was great. As was Leo never giving in despite not having a fancy weapon. He was the turtle to get the box, and showed that they were chosen for their inner resolve, not just their physical abilities. (I know, I know, that did sound a bit corny, didn't it?)

I like season 5 because the turtles save the entire world from being enslaved by demons. Some people don't think the turtles should save the world which is why they don't care much for the lost season. or the fact that they feel it's just plain corny (magic and dragons and what not).

I don't watch anime so I personally did not get the "cheap anime knockoff" feeling. For one who does not watch anime, season five is a cool new spin on ninja turtles

I watch and like anime. And I like the Ninja Tribunal season.

This is a pretty good episode IMHO. But next week's is even better.

If you ask me, fans decided to "hate" TLS because of not just it's overexposure, multiple viewings making it no longer "exclusive", the sheer majority that criticised FF ("You hate my season, I'll hate yours back"), or the mainstream anime backlash, but all the crappy Leo/Karai fanart and fanfiction went out the f*cking window

TLS is actually ABOVE most present animes in writing and characterisations. Doesnt say a whole darn lot about the genre these days either...

You know, I don't mind anime-zi-zation that much, but everyone seems to get it wrong. I think 2k3 WAS heavily anime inspired from the get go. But we didn't have Mikey mucking about in Super D form and odd cut scenes and stuff like that. They decided to play it toned down, just using similar little things vis a vis plot and camera angles... and that weird wide screen thing that pops up every so often. Wasn't there a shot by shot reference to Akira in one episode (or am I thinking of Teen Titans?)

Personally, while I can't say I'm loving this plot line, I'm really liking it. Sure, it borrows heavily from Naruto, hand jivin' and all that... but I still love all this 2k3 TMNT goodness. I do enjoy FF, myself, but I fogrot how much I loved the original 2k3 not having seen it in so long outside of DVD's or taped off the air tapes.

As if they would ever borrow from Naruto. Naruto wishes it could be as cool as TMNT.

Anyway, I give this episode a 4/5.

OK, I'll clarify.

Not all anime influences are bad. Avatar is good because it uses its anime influence to support the story, instead of the other way around as the bad ripoffs do. Some of the visual influences of the earlier 2k3 seasons (the standard "speed" background, for one) played the same support role IMO. And they never went too far with it. (though Leo holding the Sword of Tengu in Return to NY was close, heh)

My problem with the Lost Season anime influence so far is that it's overriding the "Turtle" feel. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles don't need to announce their attacks as they do them. ("Neck Snap!" *crunch* and the like.) They just kick butt as ninjas do, silent and efficient. The glowy chi stuff is OK enough, as a visual representation of increased focus, but I can see it becoming a powerup-type deal so easily in the future.

In this episode it made me happy to see Mikey really take to using his focus for stealth... but of course they had to trivialize it by making him goof it up every time. By the end he probably should have been able to get it right, but there goes their plot device, right?

I dunno, my feelings are so mixed. Some things are done the good ol' way, but then some things are so awkwardly thrown together. I love some things and squirm at others. Splinter looks absolutely awesome this season, and I love him being back in the role of protective father. And yet as I watch I can't help but criticize writing and storyboarding choices, where in regular 2k3 I was usually very appreciative of them. Hence my "clumsy storytelling" complaint.

I really hope this gets better... I'd hate to have to give up on another season of Turtles.

And re: Putrescent: Sorry if I offended you, but your history does indeed suggest that you would bring that up, even if you're better about it now. I was just trying to stop that line of discussion before it started, as you were already in "told you so" mode. But whatever... I'm willing to drop it if you are.
