Now, I know that Raphael's sais was definitely influenced by Daredevil's Elektra. But, where did Leonardo's katana swords, Michaelangelo's nuchukus (hoped I spelled that right), and Donatello's bo stuff came from? I'm just curious.

What the hell does Daredevil have to do with Raph's sais?

Quick answer: it doesn't.
Staff and katana are pretty obvious weapons, they're not quite as exotic as sais or nunchucks.

all of those weapons are staples of modern Japanese martial arts. THAT's where they come from.

Yeah they are the most comonly used Ninja weapons in movies etc. Nothing to do with Marvel comics.

we've already had a discussion *similar* to this one. we were wondering where the turtles got any of their stuff hehe. we decided that since splinter is a rat, he scavenges in trash cans and dumpster.
so, im guessing they found them either at a back lot of a ninjistu school or something, or he may have gotten them from splinter's home, seeing as how his master was a martial artist guy.

Oh! Well of course They got them from Yoshi's Martial arts school!

Well considering the tmnt aren't real, we just have to accept the fact that peter laird didn't go into ever little detail ;)

I've always had the theory that sicne they live in the sewers that they just are able to find money...I mean how many wall-street boys do you think drop a wallet or a few bucks while walking to work....
Just a thought :tsleep:

About the whole Daredevil/TMNT thing:
I thought there was a discussion about all that before, you know, The "Foot" parodying the "Hand" or whatever it was called, Elecktra (sp) with the sais, and even their origin...
Is it all just a big coincidence?

except for the elektra/sai thing, no its not a coincidence. it was a homage/parody of the great frank miller.
as for the weapons, the most likely scenario is that splinter 'stole' them (technically they were his anyway) from Yoshi's apartment and/or martial arts dojo.

all of those weapons are staples of modern Japanese martial arts. THAT's where they come from.Actually, all of those "weapons" except for the swords started out as farm tools used by the Okinawans before Japan invaded the island.
Sai = pitchforks
Nunchackus = used in beating down rice patties
Bo = stick used for carrying water buckets
And I'll include some others as well:
kama = sickle
tonfa = crank for meat grinder
If you're wondering where I got that info, I learned all that stuff when I was in karate camp a long time ago.

wrong. that is a very popular, but very wrong, misconception.
the sai, or jutte as it is more commonly known, was used by both Chinese and Japanese warriors for centuries.
the nunchaku was originally a Chinese weapon and is still taught in kung fu schools today... in addition, the 'nunchaku' Mike often uses in the comics is simply an adapted form of the manriki-gusari
the bo staff was used in both Japan and China for many, many centuries.
the kama is also a Japanese weapon, it is not Okinawan in origin.
the tonfa is the only one of those weapons that MIGHT have an Okinawan origin.

Well they didn't need to explain. Yoshi owned a Martial arts school. Doesn't take much thinking to guess where the weapons came from.
About the Sai being a farmer tool is true
Its even mentioned on the FOXBOX tmnt site (check Raphs room)

no, its not.
that is a very, VERY popular misconception a lot of people have. i don't know, i guess i would attribute it to 'karate propaganda' or something like that.
do a little research, the sai is based on a chinese weapon. even in japan, samurai and ninja warriors were using the jutte centuries before the first karate punch was every thrown.

this isn't a contest. just do a little research. all of these weapons, with the possible exception of the tonfa, predate the Okinawa-te by centuries.
Well they didn't need to explain. Yoshi owned a Martial arts school. Doesn't take much thinking to guess where the weapons came from.
Okay, now this has got me bugging. Does it actually say anywhere that Yoshi owned a Martial Arts school, or is it another fanon thing, like Don not being able to cook?

no, in the first issue of the Mirage series it plainly says Yoshi made his living with a martial arts school.

You think I would go saying false things as facts like that? Especially about Mirage? :o
Okay, just checking. Guess that fact slipped my mind.

Well I have read the first issue in many formats and quite a few times, So it has sicked in the back of my skull.
