Toonzone reviewed Season 6 of the original TMNT DVD:
http://news.toonzone.net/article.php?ID=23246
If you don't feel like reading it, the reviewer basically said the show was crap and that it isn't worth buying.
I disagree with everything the reviewer said and not just because I'm a TMNT fan, but because I truthfully enjoyed all these episodes when I watched them on the DVD last week. What are your thoughts on this review?

I think this person forgot that Ninja Turtles wasn't a serious cartoon.

He also forgot ninja turtles was HUGE! Every kid in my class loved the turtles for 5 years straight. :ohwell: It was a money monster with enormous popularity. Who the crap is this reviewer?!

It wasn't the greatest season, but DEFINITELY not the worst..

Someone should gift the reviewer Season 1. Season 1's flaws, in my opinion, only lie in the "wrong mask color/wrong voice coming out" in certain scenes... and I almost don't wanna consider it an error when all the Turtles had red masks during that one part in the first fight against Bebop and Rocksteady.
Haven't read this review yet, but Toon Zone is notorius for negative reviews anyway.

Exactly. Not only did he miss the entire point of the show by taking it way too seriously, but he also had some of the weirdest complaints I've ever heard about the original cartoon. He can't tell the turtles apart by their voices or personalities? Some of the characters' voices are "loud"? And since when is the Technodrome a "spaceship"?
The fact that the article was negative doesn't bother me, since I know the OT has its flaws and certainly isn't perfect. However, I find the whiny, self-important tone of the article to be very obnoxious. It's a shame that ToonZone didn't get a real reviewer to write an intelligent article about this DVD instead of publishing a worthless, ignorant rant by some newbie.
^ Well yes, that's also what I was meaning (along with Toon Zone having many negative reviews, alot have foolish reasons behind the negativity).
Just skimmed over it and ended up closing the window before I could fully read it. The guy didn't know what he was talking about, and was pretty harsh for a simple DVD review.
I think he has personal issues about how his mother would never buy him TMNT stuff as a child after seeing one episode, telling him it's the spawn of Satan and how it will turn him into a devil child. And so he suffered, watching his friends play with their Turtle things, knowing full and well that he would never be able to buy any for himself. So he then hatched a plan...to badmouth TMNT as much as possible to the point where they will have to be canceled! It was brilliant! No one could stop him! All he had to do was wait until he was a balding man still living in his mother's basement to write up a review and send it away. Who's the mad one now? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!...
...but yeah, considering how he feels all big and mighty ripping on a show made back in the 80's, I doubt he has much of a life.
Well, I'm not happy with this release, but the general opinion makes it seem not worth my time to read this ignorant whining. I wouldn't be able to stomach it anyway.

heh. That's pretty much all their reviews, Krang. they either smack of ellitism, or some sort of idiotic personal agenda. They do have some good reviewers that give a thoughtful deconstruction of the product, but then they have snarky twirps that write a bad review cuz they had a bad day (one even admitted it).
But here's what I have to say about it. A review on a message/news board are only more respectful than one posted on an Angry snot who hates his childhood blog. You know, the ones where theguy has a full vocabulary of every swear word known to man, but a vocabulary of like 5 other words.
So I frankly find it rediculous that people take stock in crap like this. Honestly. I'm not even bothering to read it.

Whats with all the complaints of it being LOUD and how can a theme song be TINY? He complains it's not loud enough, then complains how loud it is. He says kids didn't like Slimer? He said TMNT was a group of Orkos?
Epic Fail.

Some people take cartoons way too seriously.
I'm not sure how good the show was at that point, but the earlier seasons were great. Yeah, a lot of it was based off of silly b-movie plots, but what's wrong with that? I wish another cartoon or sci-fi program would come along and be willing to not take itself so seriously and rehash old sci-fi movie plots.

Erm, that's tinny, as in high-pitched.
It sounds like the reviewer failed to realize that the show was supposed to be silly, but whatever. This is why I never bother to read "professional" reviews.

While I like my Turtles serious and he does have some points when it comes to flaws of the old show... jeez, it wasn't that bad. You kinda can't look at it as an adult; it was made for kids and it's best enjoyed in that context. There are some things you just forgive... like in Swat Kats where no matter how the villain is defeated, he's always going to come back no worse for the wear. And all those impossible missles. X)
The '80s turtles (and any cartoon, to some degree) are like that too. You enjoy the fourth wall breakage, enjoy the surfer silliness (though I don't really recall Leonardo buying hard into the "cowabunga" thing; the turtles were distinct, if not as much as in other media)
Sounds like this was a "had a bad day" review to me. Though I do concur that (for me) I enjoyed this show much more as a kid, there still is stuff to enjoy.

I found it humorous that he bashed the theme song. what?
How can you give a dvd set a bad review and use that as a source? The theme was the same throughout the entire series until the red sky eps.
His opinions on the VAs was a bit shady as well. It seems as though it was a review of the series as a whole (which he clearly does not like) rather than just the season 6 release

Wow, I could hardly get the first few paragraphs. (Heck, I stopped after he called the series "abysmal". I agree that the show has it's flaws and sometimes makes me roll my eyes, but there are enough well placed jokes to keep me interested.
Season 6 has one thing that makes me as an aspiring VA happy, there are no episodes where an alternate is used. You hear James Avery as Shredder, Pat Fraley as Krang, Barry Gordon as Donatello, and of course Rob Paulsen as Raphael, and no lousy, "I'm glad he has like 3 lines" replacement.
TMNT had some of the greatest VA's ever in it. I'm kind of glad after reading some of the comments here that I didn't get as far as that in the article. I can handle people who were disapointed in TMNT in retrospect, but those people are very talented and are some of my all time idols.
EDIT: I finished it, and ohhhh boy! How could he complain about Krang? I'm sure he's one of those guys who thinks he knows better than a practicing VA how to do something. Reminds me of a guy who couldn't do the Goofy yell (Yahhhhhwhowhowhowhee!) and yet told me mine sucked.
Just so you know, that goofy yell was used on Tenchi Muyo! before 2K3. It was the title screen audio for the OVA series.

He posted this in the discussion sec:
Yes, I did wonder whether this was a case of a late season being reprehensibly bad after the show had seen better days. The last dozen or so eps of Thundercats for example are TERRIBLE.
I should have mentioned that in the review to be honest, but -- frankly -- the quality of the those 16 episodes is so bad that I can't imagine the first 5 seasons being that much better.
It's something that has dated very badly that, I found, has no redeeming features at all. It ruined my own fond memories of it.

Wow, this review was beyond awful. As an aspiring writer I feel almost insulted by how bad it really is!
I actually thought it was so bad, I wrote a "letter to the editor". Hopefully the "editor" actually reads it..
Here it is,
I just wanted to submit an e-mail to inform you how awful the review for TMNT volume 6 was, written by "JerryvonKramer". First off, the review was a horrendously negative review, but that wasn't even the problem.. As much as I love the Turtles, I don't mind the fact that other people might not find them entertaining. The problem I do have however is how the writer treated the subject. He obviously had no information about the show going into the review, and didn't bother to pick up any information while watching the DVD. He knew very little about the characters, the locations, the names, and the whole universe in general. It's also apparent that he didn't watch more than the first couple episodes (out of sixteen), since that's all he makes reference to.. at one point the writer even says he couldn't tell which character was which! Obviously if the writer took the time to watch all 16 episodes even someone with his obvious intelligence problem could have picked up on which character was which. Another problem I had with the review is that the writer kept comparing the Turtles to irreverent cartoons such as Thundercats. Obviously the writer is a big fan of the Thundercats (as he constantly reminded us), but does he need to bring them up every few sentences? It has absolutely no place in a review of the TMNT.
I've been coming to your website for a long time now, and I mostly enjoy all my visits, but in the future I hope that you can find a writer who actually takes the time and effort to put together a knowledgeable review as opposed to something that reads like it was written by a middle school student with a personal vendetta. Thank you for your time.

Finally decided to read the whole thing and saw the dumbass post this:
First, there are the four turtles themselves. Despite the claim in the theme music that "Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines ... Raphael is rude ... and Michelangelo is a party dude", there is very little to distinguish them by voice or personality. The characters are defined almost purely by their actions, and there's not much difference even there. So, for example, Leonardo is more likely to be the one training hard while Michelangelo is more likely to be slacking off playing on a video game. But while he is training, Leonardo is indistinguishable from the other turtles; likewise with Michelangelo on the games machine. They will both use the words "whoa", "dude" and "mondo" a lot; they are both fairly stupid when speaking to Splinter and unusually perceptive when dealing with adversaries. And, perhaps most importantly of all, they both have annoying unrealistically upbeat "surf-dude" voices. It is too much to take.
Is he serious?

It was just a review done by someone with no attachment to the series, it makes me wonder if he ever watched it in the 80s and 90s. He says he did but I doubt he would have reviewed it that way if he had. I wish they would choose reviewers on interest, I mean not to be biased but you can't review something from that long ago unless you understand its history and I didn't get that vibe at all from this reviewer. He definitely just seemed to want to trash something.
It's annoying but not to be taken too seriously
Does TZ allow reviews from just anyone? that guy only registered in November has 100 posts where most are all made in the DC/Batman forum..
Toon Zone is a big site its odd they'd just publish any review like that.. but I guess as big the site is that review shouldn't really be influential at all.
Has anyone thought that you're giving him what he wants just by keeping the topic of his joke of a review fresh? He seems to me one of those who think ripping apart anything is 'journalistic integrity'. And, by not ignoring him and his hidden agenda, he gets the attention he wants. Just a thought...

Oh....no, no...The actual Goofy yell. When Disney's Goofy falls or something.
As for the Leo/Mikey the same character deal, allow Raphael to answer that:

It goes without saying that I consider Toon Zone to be curtain statement hacks. Hack reviewers, hack fans, hack animation "authorities", and there hands are clasped so tightly on WB and Disney's arses that they cant talk out of the very arses they have for heads without sounding like arses. They know virtually nothing about variety, and care less for any series that isnt oscar-worthy, to take any review as credible is like saying you beleive Osama Bin Laden took a photo with Bert from Sesame Street
That said, most of the review department steadily has improved over the years, and, whilst this is absolutely RIGHT about the sixth season of the original series, in true "Hack Zone" fashion, he uses that one season to pretty much definethe whole series.
Season six is a waste of time and the show realizing it's mortality. The voice actors are set in their ways, and Wise was begging to do something different. The sole highlights of the season are the first three episodes, with another from the fifth season also present to make up four worthy additions...but you're better off counting "Rock Around the Block" as season five's finale and skipping to season seven
VaughnMichael

Season six may not be the best but I'd hardly call it a waste of time, I think that's being a little to harsh.
There are allot of good moments and characters return in this season something that doesn't happen often in the series.
Not to mention the art style in these episodes is a hell of allot better than what we had been getting from the weekday afternoon episodes.

Hell, I'd take their eletism over this sort of snotty snarfing anyday of the week. I'd guess this guy didn't bring up any points or anything to suppliment his argument, and is just pooing on an old cartoon that's popular for argument sake. And he clearly has a minus minded agenda that motivates a bad review like that.

Admittedly, this one is among my least favorite seasons. Not lame/bad, just not very exciting. That's why I'm extra pissed re: the bare-bones release. But... uhm...

People act like they spend 100 dollars on these DVDs. I must be a millionaire then because I can afford all the DVDs that come out. The DVDs are 10 dollars, 11 with tax in the great state of CA. People act like it's crippling to their budget if they buy one 10 dollar DVD they don't like. Unless your 10 and your parents give you an allowance every week of 2 dollars and you have to save up for a month to be able to afford it I fail to see the issue. 10 dollars is about 1 hours pay at a retail job. So you don't need to be a lawyer to be able to buy all the turtles releases. I have them all and there was awhile there where I was brushing my teeth in the bathroom at Starbucks.
Now why I bothered to bring this up is I get sick of people bitching about the DVDs.
"There's no extras why did I buy it"
Look at anime DVDs their 25 dollars for 4 episodes and no extras.
"Should I get it I don't know"
It's 10 dollars buy the god damn DVD and quit whining. It cost 5 dollars to rent it. If you rent it and like it then go and buy it now you've spent 15 bucks.
"It's a waste of money there's only 4 good episodes"
You paid 15 for the first releases of the 2K3 DVDs and they only had 4 episodes on them so technically your getting quite a deal here.

Oh well we can't all like the same things but this season is the start of the series change for me and when I really started to like it again.
Yes indeedy doo, We have Aprils aunt who comes back and is a big tv star now, Kerma is back with more "little" problems, and prof. sofo is back and his old place is diserted.
So there is some continuation going on in the old toon but you've really got to look for it, I think most people hate these characters so they really don't give a crap either way.

Well I bought mine off Amazon and it was 10 bucks. I bought it with something else and got free shipping. At Best Buy their like 10 as well I believe. The more expensive ones are the ones with special packaging or tons of episodes on them. You buy that and hate it that I can understand but most of the releases were 10 bucks.
These episodes are all on Youtube so anyone buys the DVD and hates it only has them self to blame for not watching the episodes first.

It seems silly to even review a cartoon from the 80s/90s that's coming out on DVD anyway. Obviously the people that will want to buy it will be people that watched it and already have a connection to the series anyway. I doubt it'll pick up many new fans along the way unless it is as a result of people that liked the turtles thru the newer series or the new movie.
I just think it's pointless to have someone review this unless they're reviewing it for things like bonus features and stuff. The point of releasing old shows on DVD is to cater to the audience that it did in the first place, not to win over new people. Maybe that's what the reviewer didn't realize.

Aside from those several awkward assumptions the writer makes, the review has a few valid points.
Why I don't like film critics? They get PAID to see movies. Not even just get to see them free. They get paid to see them, and have bugs up their butts about certain films.
They are paid for devoting their time see certain movies and pulling out analytical and well-readable reviews afterwards, which might come in handy for others to save up their money.
Stating that someone gets paid to see the movie you'd have to pay for - and still dares to show his discontentment about what he saw - sounds like a badly hidden jealousy for me.

Hardly any slating of the characters or the "personal experiance" o watching your "childhood raped", or even bashing characters that are meant to be comedy-based. Instead, this review takes a strong look at the highs and lows of both products and doesnt throw in "dont buy this" so dilligently. It even gives props to some episodes of "Movies" (admitedly, I love the Batman parody, but I've only ever seen three of the series)
It all comes down to the reviewer being a curtain statement hack, the kind of reviewers TZ once were, and the type TZ ought to NEVER recruit again

Listen. it's all a matter of tastes. Critics review things based on what they like. So basically, we're getting why something isn't good in their eyes by their accounts. I like to say, give it a go yourself. Only you know what you like best. You're your own best Critic.
And yes, if you made a career out of seeing movies for free that is something that I'm jealous of. I freaking have to pay to see these you know. In crappy, underkept theaters too.
