This is a poll for the rivalry between the original TMNT to the 2007 CGI movie.

Vote for your favorite, and I encourage you to also leave your personal review for both releases.

Tomorrow I will begin writing my reviews. I promise to share them with you when I am finished. :)

EDIT: There's a poll now!

Anywho, I prefer the original 1990 TMNT. While the 2007 one was relevant to how the franchise is currently being treated, I'm a big fan of comic adaptions. While I didn't see it as a comic adaption as a kid (I just saw it as a damn good movie), it feels like that the first TMNT movie was as close to Kevin and Pete's on-screeen "baby" as we're going to get. It was a blending of universes that was very delicate in making the comic fans happy as well as the kids who watched the OT at the time.

And, like I said, its a damn good movie. Its probably nostalgic bias that partially plays a role in my decision, but the initial TMNT/Foot conflict of the 1990 movie has yet to be surpassed in my eyes and it probably won't be surpassed for a very long time. The idea of a DTV adaption of Vol. 1 #1 would've given the 1990 movie a run for its money, but as it never happened there's still no real competition for the original.

I love both films dearly, but I'm gonna have to go with the 1990 film as well. I honestly liked it better.

The 1990 film was a great adaptation of the comics, whereas the 2007 film seemed to be more of an adaptation of the new toon.

I will say, dispite the fact I did like the first film much better, I think that TMNT 07 was the best TMNT movie since the first one. The second was good, but it became like the TV show, and the third one was alright, but lacked good anamatronics and puppetry.

Goonga, had it right when he said "there is no poll here". There really isn't. This is going to be 1990 all the way for at least 96.54% of the people here.

You do realize, Odupianist...

that when he said "there is no poll", I had been distracted and forgot to add one. So I edited in the poll later.

In 1990, fans were blown away... sky high! ... at that action-packed flick known as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

We are flung into an alternate New York, which seems normal enough initially, but we soon discover right under the surface (literally), there are mutants that have taken it upon themselves to fight the forces of badness: in this case a clan of Juvenile Delinquent Wannabe-Ninjas infesting the Big Apple.

Never thought you could do anything but balk and chuckle at the idea of four actors in turtle costumes, with a penchant for kicking ass? If you are a human with an actual soul: Think again. Whackiness is but an after-thought here... we as the viewer encounter the results of children raised on the streets. While the Foot Clan are twisted, they are also all sympathetic criminals. They have been ruthlessly brainwashed by a Japanese tyrant whose blood has ran cold, his mindset totalitarian, bitter, and derranged. If those attributes aren't enough to cause concern, keep in mind that this main villain, Oroku Saki aka The Shredder, makes no attempt at a facade. He makes it perfectly clear, via his razor-sharp armor, that he's there to do dirty business, and hasn't a single reservation about it.

Only the Turtles are an adequate (questionably so) force to resist this criminal uprising. Being mutants, they are forced to isolate themselves from mainstream society, working in only the deepest of shadows. Rather fitting, given their occupation for ninjitsu (second only to the fine art of devouring pizza).

While two characters (Splinter and Shredder) are well defined as pure light or dark, every other character, even the four Turtles, are cast in varying shades of moral gray. It's this brutally honest realism aspect that might disturb younger viewers. What's going on in everyone's heads? Why is Raphael so given to bouts of rage? Are the Turtles truly the ninja heroes they strive to be? Finding the answers to these questions is a journey of animalistic violence that scarcely falls short of blood sport. It's through this we come to respect each individual Turtle and their distinguishable, 3-Dimensional personalities.

If a Turtle movie of this calibur comes along in the future, I'll be pleasantly surprised. How could it get any better than this for a fan?

In this, you fall in love with the ambitious April O'Neil, admire the quasi-madman Casey Jones, fear and despise The Shredder, and be reminded of your wise grandfather in Master Splinter.

Which reminds me... "Forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for a late pizza!"

Pun very much intended, this classic is one shell of a good time!

And the era of annoying CGI flies and Monkeys in space is upon us.

Seriously, I don't see why CGI is so much better than animatronics when it comes to a live action movie... most of the time everything seems painted in last moment. Look at the last 3 Star Wars films, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. I liked Chipmunks, but half the time you could tell Jason Lee was talking to an empty counter top.

Now TMNT 3 had TERRIBLE animatronics... and the Splinter Puppet looked like... well, any girls have old Barbie Dolls they played with constantly, and the hair got all greasy and fuzzy and looked like it could pull all off with one clean pull? he looked like a stuffed dog covered with the stuff...

The 1990 TMNT is the BEST out of all the TMNT movies that have been made so far. I also liked part three, but those puppets were fugly.

There was enough of a realism that you don't really notice the absurdity of the whole thing. If they were to do the same thing with a CGI movie, it could be just as good. I don't think TMNT 07 wasn't as well recieved for its animation style, it's just that the plot (and almost everything about it, really) seemed hastily pushed together and flimsy. The universe portrayed in TMNT 1990-you feel like you could almost buy real estate in it, whereas in the 2007 movie...well, not so much.

The first movie was pioneering in technology, naturally not up to today's standards. You can't compare it to now. Back then they were clunky, unreliable things...I think the leaps & bounds they made were huge.

There may be a live action / cgi...

CGI isn't always the best way to go with live. Not to me it is. With an actor in a technologically advanced costume, it would work. There's something missing when live and CGI characters are mixed...not in every movie, but many times there are.

That was a bad move telling the whole story over again in the middle, waste of time.
I'm like WTF?!

I was afraid of this repeating in Hellboy II, but no, they tell you the story of the Golden Army in the beginning. I was happy with that. Why the hell did they have to waste those minutes in TMNT when they could have put it to better use? Run out of ideas? Kids aren't stupid, they don't need it repeated.

Yeah, I can help ya there. AWFUL characterization, not great voice... It goes on. The 1990 movie had tons of problems, but I still like it. The 2007 one was ok, also. In my opinion, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie hands down, is undoubtedly one the best comic book adaptions ever made. Well for many reasons, it had a dark mature tone, it was more of a PG-13/R film than PG, Jim Henson's turtles and splinter animatronics/costumes were awesome, Shredder and the Foot looked insanely good, Judith Hoag & Elias Koteas played April and Casey Jones perfectley, John Du Prez's scores were outstanding, Raph was such a badass (yeah I'm proud to be a Raph fan), the sets were well designed, basically every scene was well thought out and filmed excellently (we've got Steve Barron to thank for that). This is what basically made me a fan.

TMNT 2007...:dead:...There can't even be a comparison here between these two movies. There where countless things that gave me more reasons not to like this movie. I don't know but to me, the plot so f***ing senseless with all these random characters. I didn't like how the cg humans looked, all deformed and everything. The yoatl intro put me to sleep. The voice acting was weak. The list goes on.

TMNT 1990 wins the medal.

I thought the 1990 movie was horrid, it almost turned me off to the franchise. I hate animatronics, and the turtles moved so clunkily. I'm glad the era of animatronics and live action are over. *shudder*

I get the sense that the 1900-hater (Raphael_) is a lone wolf encountering a pack of the unaccepting.

I'm all for vicious debate. However, if Raphael_ doesn't reply back in the next couple of days, I ask for his first post to remain criticized no further. Fans have to defend their convictions, but never take it so far as to become cannibals. My threads are for people with class.

That's something that's really nice about TMNT movies in general, though. Even in the first one where a more in-depth version of the origin was told, it didn't take like half the movie to tell the story.

Unless you're talking about the TMNT and their first encounters with the Foot being an origin story, its not really that bad.

1990 flick for me. The realism of it all was mind-blowing back then. Even though I've been watching the cartoon for 3 years, I still saw this movie and went along with the story despite the fact it was more an adaptation of the Mirage books. There was no Krang, no Bebop or Rocksteady, and no Technodrome, but it was friggin awesome.

Even though I really like the '07 CGI film, the classic live-action release of 1990 holds more in my mind as a fan.

The first Ninja Turtles from 1990, no contest.

I'm sure it takes a lot of effort to make a CGI movie, but making live action turtles seems much more impressive to me. The original movie seemed to have a lot more action and more of the turtles. Plus it's a great adaptation of the Mirage comic books, with a little bit of the cartoon thrown in so kids won't be left completely baffled as to why the turtles are a bit different than what they've seen on TV.

I Choose the original 1990 movie for the following ;

- The darker tone made it more Mirage comics than Fred Wolf Toon.

- The original movie blew my mind as a kid. Live action Ninja Turtles ? HELL YEAH !!!!

- The soundtrack was dope as hell . M.C Hammer's " This is what we do ", Technotronic's " Spin that Wheel ", Riff's " Family", Spunkadelic's " 9.95", and Partners N Kryme " Turtle Power " were the best tracks.

- Shredder whooping the turtles, then being taken out by Splinter. Classic.

- Rapheal was a bad ass.

- The 2007 movie just plain sucked. The story was juevenile, the monsters corny, and the turtles looked more realistic than the humans. Plus I hate CGI animated movies. 2-D is good enough for me.

First movie. To see "real Turtles!" in a movie as a kid was phenomenal. As an adult, I really appreciate the tone of the movie. For the most part, the cast was spot-on, and the story/action really flowed. It's a movie you didn't want to end.

Don't get me wrong, I love the CGI movie, too, but in a different way. Also, not being much of a rap fan, I like the song selection much more in the last movie than in the first.

The 1990 film. All three original TMNT films were good, they could have done some more if the same popularity remained after 1993. But I didn't really like that they removed the Jordan Perry-Utrom thing from the 2nd film, the mutagen shall at lteast have it's having origin from an other planet than Earth in all TMNT universes I think (The Utroms in the Mirage comics and 2003 cartoon, Krang helping Shredder in the 1987 carton and the Archie comics). I don't like the 2003 film, it should have another story than those stone figures.

I would have loved more of the score, too. All the songs on the soundtrack were in the movie; only a few were used in the credits. They're easy to miss, though, because they really enhance the scene they're in, rather than draw attention to themselves. And often, only snippets of the song are used (ie, first 6 seconds of Track 10 in the scene with Raph & Casey on the roof after stringing up the robber on the street light).

01. Shell Shock: 1st closing credits song
02. Rip It Up: Mikey backing van into garage; skateboarding in sewers
03. There's A Class For This: Casey getting ready for final fight
04. Awww Dip: 13th monster chasing April & Casey in van; 2nd closing credits song

07. Fall Back Into My Life: playing in diner before Jersey Devil scene
08. Red Flag: Cowabunga Carl scenes
09. Walking On Water: Mikey skateboarding on half pipe in lair
10. Youth Like Tigers: Raph & Casey talking on roof
11. Lights Out [Chris Vrenna mix]: courtyard battle against Karai & the Foot

I like everything almost everything about the 1990 movie better than the 2007 movie. I only like 2007 Don, over 1990 Don. Other than that, I mean all of the turtles had a lot of screen time (although Raph kinda stole the show). They actually fought Foot ninjas, instead of jumping on their heads for like a minute. There was way more emotion in the live action movie. Judith Hoag and Elias Koteas are WAAY better actors than Gellar and Evans(voice acting but still). Splinter seemed more like a father in the first than some teacher that just sort of lives with you. PLUS the SHredder Vs Turtles fight is pure awesomeness as opposed to the 2 minute beatdown of the 4 stone dudes. I dunno about you guys but when I was watching the last fight in TMNT I felt that it was just too easy for the turtles. When I watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I still feel the intensity of the Turtles giving it everything that they've got, but it's just not enough to take out SHred head. Until Splinter saves the day. Now THAT is an awesome ending to a pretty cool flick.

But, hey. come to think of it, I have more Turtles merchandise now compared from before. I'm even giving time to post in this forum NOW. Though, of course, this forum didn't exist back then. Ninja turtles holds more nostalgia value for me, and has stood up surprisingly well over time. when i watched it recently the suits and faces really looked like guys with suits on. the turtles in tmnt were more dangerous and capable looking. 1990 was still a way better movie. tmnt didn't even need the turtles. it was winters' movie.

I agree. I liked all the three first TMNT movies, and it's not fun to wait 14 years (1993-2007) for a new one only to be disappointed.

Since they had to go the CGI route, why didn't the producers use the same CGI used in Beowulf ? At least it would've looked alot more realistic.

Thee 1990 film dominates the poll (as of September 2008).

TMNT is probably my least favorite film of the four. Turtles III at least has nostalgia on its side, something that TMNT wasn't good enough to make me overlook.

To me the one thing that kills Turtles III is the costumes. I kinda like the story, but then again I'm a fan of timetravel story arcs.

That I can agree to.

For me it was because it reminded me of Renet and the time sceptre and thats why I liked for what it is.

This is a joke thread right?

In some ways, yeah. There's no way in hell TMNT surpasses the original.

Hey, I've been to a certain Turtle forum whose majority of members didn't respect the original. This is my way of figuring out where exactly the Technodrome stands, and in this case, it passed my test.

The original movie for sure. It has nostalgia on it's side and I can watch it over and over again without getting bored.

I don't think nostalgia is good when reviewing movies, record albums or whatever.

I know that, I'm just being a biased jerkwad. ;)

But I honestly think that first film is just more fun to watch.

The moral was definitely more profound in the 1990 movie. That's all the reason I need to prefer it over the 2007 movie.

Telling kids that if they feel excluded or rejected that turning to the false security of a gang can only serve to further alienate them from society seems pretty profound to me. Are you saying you never picked up on that?

In Sweden, kids under 15 weren't allowed to watch the film in cinema. Did they have such stupid restrictions for this film in other parts of the world to? The second was reduced to 11 and the third (and the new one) to 7.

You're Right. And it also touched upon dealing with emotional issues like anger ( Rapheal), team work, and the importance of family.

I like the 1990 more, it has a more complete balance of story telling, characters, actors, music and an overall feeling.

But, I do like the 2007 movie too. And it had aspects I prefer. It carried the weapons fighting more efficiently for me than the motion picture did. And I loved Raph and his bike. That was awesome. And I really liked the idea of Mikey having blue eyes.

But the 1990 version didn't worry too much about the censors at the time. They actually had freaking blood drawn when they got into fights. So it had more freedom for a little while till the second movie was restrained by the execs who wanted something more tame.

Blood when? The only possible hint of blood I can point out is when Leo sliced Shredder across the arm...?

I guess showing those red patch mark bruises on the turtles showed a hint of blood in the first flick as well. All I know is that it had that bigger feeling of intimate violence than TMNT did.

Was the first movie a success in the USA? In Sweden, the first beame more like a fiasco since the Mirage comics were very rare then, only the 1987 cartoon, Archie and the UK Hero Turtles comics were very popular. I did't know about the Mirage comics since 2003-2004, I always thought Archie was first, then came 1987 cartoon and then the movies.

You can definitely say it was a success in the US even when the budget remained so low.

The blood I recall I saw in the first movie, well, I remember red shiny stuff that looked like blood glinting off of Mikey's arm when he was cracking jokes and dodging the basuto (sp?) in April's apartmnet. Leo also had some blood on him just before his fight with Shredder.

Then Casey had some blood drawn when Tatsu beat the crap out of him.

Splinter's face was all battered and had blood shining in his fur from the beatings he took from the Shredder.

They you could see the slash marks from when Shredder killed Yamato Yoshi and Tang Shen.

For a movie that had it's main audience built up from the 1980's cartoon, it was not shy in the story telling, fight sequences, the swearing! They're teenagers for crying out loud, of course they are going to swear. A little damn and ass never hurt no body!

The 1990 film is the best. They will never make anything even remotely close to it, stylewise. Even the second movie was dumbed-down, with child-izing the eyes and making it more kiddie.

The new one had HINTS of the old style, just a few of the things they said, and some of the scenes, but I didn't like the "tame-for-toddlers" 13 monsters plot. They looked like something from Pixar.

Not to mention Judith Hoag was hot, way better than Paige Turco. The first movie showed the connection with the brothers, and the sense of teamwork was really there. They didn't have to go out of their way to show that, you get it with the turtles being down one (Raph) and then with Splinter being taken.

Here's another point; no ONE turtle had more screen-time than the other in the original. Everyone has the same amount of lines in the movie, you don't think someone got stiffed. The new movie barely had any Don whatsoever, that pissed me off.

They really need to re-release the original. I want to see more of the farm and April!

I agree with you on the re-releasing the original so we can see the extended farm scene. I was reading somewhere that the Turtles go after Shredder 3 times. The first time when they indivual went turns, then they went after Shredder once again all together, took a break when we seen them out of breath and the last attack they can give. I don't know if that is true or not, can someone explain if this was true?
