I guess Battle Toads.

I forgot how many Turtles ripoffs there were.

Would Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers count? I know the footage was taken from the Sentai series, but keep in mind the American additions like making the heroes teenagers (instead of warriors that had been frozen in time) and the title of the series, which seems to have been influenced by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Nah, the Power Rangers were a rip off of Voltron.

I guess Disney's Gargoyles would also be considered a turtle rip off too, at least with the name scheme. The turtles were all named after reinassance artists, the Gargoyles, cities in New York.

I've talked to Greg Weisman on his blog a few times, and read about every entry there. He was more inspired by classic fantasy tales (Shakespeare and Arthurian for instance) than anything. So I don't really think TMNT had an influence on Gargoyles.

The naming might have been an homage. Impossible to know for sure; but the series is definitely not to be considered a Turtle rip-off.

I would have to disagree with the Gargoyles because I never saw or felt they were ripping off the TMNT. Plus it was too serious of a show to be ripping off the TMNT of the time. I would have to say street sharks. Dr. pirahna head was awesome.

Can C.O.W.Boys really be considered a "rip-off" considering it was created by a prominent TMNT artist who also created some of the series' most popular characters such as Leatherhead?

Okay, maybe not the Gargoyles. BUT to a lesser extent, I think the Toxic Crusaders were a rip off of the Turtles. Now Don't get me wrong, I loved the Crusaders and the ultra-violent Troma Toxic Avenger movies they were loosely based on. But I guess since the same animation company that made the OT TMNT also made TC, you can't help but see the similarities;

DR. KILLEMOFF = SHREDDER
CZAR ZOSTER = KRANG
PYSCHO & BONE HEAD = BEBOP & ROCKSTEADY
RADIATION RANGERS = FOOT SOLDIERS

I even remember Toxie even saying in one episode " Just because we're mutants, doesn't mean we have to live in the sewers."

Nah, the Power Rangers were a rip off of Voltron.
Always wanted to see someone use that exact phrase on a forum as there is so many things wrong with that statement.

1) The source footage for Power Rangers is Super Sentai. The source footage for Voltron is GoLion. Super Sentai predates GoLion by at least 4 years.
2) Both are made by Toei and Bandai, so neither is ripping off the other. Toei and Bandai are just doing what they know best which is big gaint robots.
3) Spider-Man had a gaint transforming robot before either show :P

Back on subject, I always enjoyed Biker Mice, though I don't remember much of it.

I don't think Boris was a rip off of TMNT. It did spoof and parody all of the other rip off's of TMNT at the time of the B&W comic book explosion and implosion. I think the greatest collection of TMNT spoofs ever collected in comic book form was a 1986 comic book from Blackthorne Publishing called Laffin Gas that featured the following ( trust me, I didn't make any of this up ) ;

- MILDLY MIRCRO-WAVED PRE-PUBESCENT KUNG-FU GOPHERS

- NAIVE INTERDIMENSIONAL KOALAS

- ADOLESCENT MANIACAL SAMURAI HARES

- COLOSSAL NUCLEAR BAMBINO SAMURAI SNAILS

- GUERILLA GOPHERS

Ditto Cowabunga14 on the Boris the Bear appearances, though I agree that that it's certainly more of a parody of, rather than a inspired by the TMNT.

Really, I'm a huge fan of Street Sharks & Dino Vengers (or Extreme Dinosaurs if you wanna go with the crappy name they ended up going with. The animation was pretty darn good for the time and it doesn't matter what you call them, those were like the sweetest toys around back then and they are still really fun. I'm a diehard MOC collector and those are toys I actually prefer to have loose. Killamari & Spike look so good on my desk!

Samurai Pizza Cats is more or less a parody altho the TMNT are mentioned in the theme song.

Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters is my fave. I have every issue thanks to Wowio. Altho I don't like that they added a female to the group in the new stuff. Meh.

The Kung Fu Kangaroos is a kinda a parody BUT Donatello appears in the first issue.

Boris the Bear is not as much a parody as well somebody who hates everything. He kills off the TMNT (along with Woody Woodpecker, Gummi Bears, Care Bears, and well everyone else) in the 1st issue. But they all seemingly come back to life and get their revenge on him in an issue of Samurai Penguin (which is more or less a Usagi Yojimbo parody). I have yet to read any of the new Boris the Bear stuff. But I totally want to.

Wild West C.O.WBoys of Moo Mesa is not a parody per say since they've teamed up with the TMNT in the comics and appeared in an ep of Fast Forward. It's more or less a spin-off of sorts.

Now the Street Sharks...definatly a parody.

Swat Cats is not. They're not mutants. They're on an alternate earth and they fly jets....:P

Having never heard of this show, I of course looked it up.

The Adventures of T-Rex was an animated series that aired in syndication from 1992 to 1993 in North America. The show featured five musical Tyrannosaurus brothers who played to sold-out crowds as a vaudeville group while also secretly fighting crime as "T-REX," masterminded by Professor Edison. The show lasted only one season.

Set in a world of anthropomophic dinosaurs, brothers Bernie (blue), Bruno (pink), Bubba (green), Buck (yellow) and Bugsy (purple) were born with special powers to help fight crime. Each brother's special power was related to a specific part of their anatomy; Bernie's legs, Bruno's arms, Bubba's tail, Buck's mouth and teeth, and Bugsy's telekinetic eyes. The group rode out on their Rexmobile to battle “Big Boss” Graves, crime kingpin of Rep City (the show's setting), and his evil organization, The Corporation. Kid sister Ginger was part of the singing group, but didn’t know about her brothers’ secret identities.

So if you combined TMNT with Jem and the Holograms you'd get The Adventures of T-Rex.

But seriously....telekenetic eyes???

The voice cast for this series features 2 people from Next Mutation, Scott McNeil (Bonesteel) and Michael Dobson (Leonardo).

Gary Chalk along with Scott McNeil, Brian Dobson, and Kathleen Barr also worked with Cam Clarke in the 2002 He-Man series.

What about Samuari Pizza Cats?

And would Disney's Mighty Ducks count?

A) Not really. The show is more of a satirical Sentai show, and I feel it was more a "rip off" of Power Rangers than anything. The dub dilliberately was intended as both a Power Ranger knock off (as Saban dubbed it, and they had a good relationship with Tatsunoko) and a TMNT knock off. The theme song (American one, of course) stated "They've got more fur than any Turtle ever had." The Pizza thing is kinda a tip off, though. But then again, they work at a place called "Pizza Cat" a Japanese phonetic play on Pizza Hut... mainly since a lot of times the short U sound is translated as an "Ah" sound.

B) Yes and no.... by that logic you could also count Road Rovers. Personally, I thought it was just a dumb idea, and the biggest stretch of Disney's cartoon from movie shows.

08-24-2008, 02:20 PM
If we're going by that logic, Road Rovers would be my favourite.

I, however DO count Battle Toads as a direct knock off. I don't know if it actually was to have 4 members (I somehow remember reading an early concept used in Nintendo Power saying there were 4... or at least one of the names was changed.

It also didn't help that the unsold cartoon series had a slacker that talked almost exactly like Mikey, and that one was a technogeek. I have to say, there was some potential in a cartoon series for Battle Toads, but other than the obvious cloning of the Turtle character personalities (at least with 2 of them) the series suffered terrible animation and drekky dialogue.

Well, that was a show-within-a-show. So was basically parodying the concept as a series watched in that 'universe'.

On a similar note could say the same of one in Fairly OddParent's Movie "Channel Chasers", when Timmy goes by the credits for a cow-related series that is obviously parodying TMNT.

The Tiny Toons parody was pretty weak...mainly because the original series actually IS a funny show and has much better self-deprecating humour. It actually proves the writers didnt watch the show at all.

But The Animaniacs parody of Power Rangers? Oh yeah, they HAD to have watched the series...

Hardly.

Samurai Pizza Cats was one of the best anime dubs in history for the sheer fact they actually wrote their own script and ad-libbed without following the story of the Japanese material.

Biker Mice From Mars is probably the closest they got to emulating aspects of TMNT, but otherwise it was still a great show, and the Vinnie/Charlie relationship actually gave that series an advantage over TMNT refusing to dip into that kind of territory

The only series I enjoyed that was anything like TMNT was ThunderCats. And it's not a rip-off because ThunderCats first aired on 1985 where as TMNT aired on 1987.

Which is a real shame, since given the right material, they could have really slaughtered the show... Seems like the TTA parody was basically a "Gads, this is annoying and we gotta make fun of it somehow" type deal. Of course, I still wish to find the unused Histeria! script "Middle-aged Mutant Renaissance Artists" I once read about... I still wonder if that one was even real to begin with.

And unlike shows of the 1960's, it actually improved the show (go to a dollar store and check out a crappy 1 dollar disk called "Tobor the 8th Man"- that dub left me in stitches, but not on purpose). I've seen one in the original Japanese and while it had its moments, it wasn't even the same iota as clever as the dub.

Anybody heard of the show, "Walter Melon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Melon_(TV_show))?" It was a redubbed French cartoon that parodied a lot of pop culture items. Melon and his sidekick would fill in as "temp" heroes for crimefighters who had to miss work for the day. They did a whole episode on the Ninja Turtles, although I never saw that episode in its entirety. I'm guessing it was the episode named "New Age Pizza" in which "the evil schlepper kidnaps two of the tortoises to brainwash them." (http://www.locatetv.com/tv/walter-melon/1635006)
