Would Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers count? I know the footage was taken from the Sentai series, but keep in mind the American additions like making the heroes teenagers (instead of warriors that had been frozen in time) and the title of the series, which seems to have been influenced by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Nah, the Power Rangers were a rip off of Voltron.

I guess Disney's Gargoyles would also be considered a turtle rip off too, at least with the name scheme. The turtles were all named after reinassance artists, the Gargoyles, cities in New York.

I've talked to Greg Weisman on his blog a few times, and read about every entry there. He was more inspired by classic fantasy tales (Shakespeare and Arthurian for instance) than anything. So I don't really think TMNT had an influence on Gargoyles.

The naming might have been an homage. Impossible to know for sure; but the series is definitely not to be considered a Turtle rip-off.

I would have to disagree with the Gargoyles because I never saw or felt they were ripping off the TMNT. Plus it was too serious of a show to be ripping off the TMNT of the time. I would have to say street sharks. Dr. pirahna head was awesome.

Can C.O.W.Boys really be considered a "rip-off" considering it was created by a prominent TMNT artist who also created some of the series' most popular characters such as Leatherhead?

Okay, maybe not the Gargoyles. BUT to a lesser extent, I think the Toxic Crusaders were a rip off of the Turtles. Now Don't get me wrong, I loved the Crusaders and the ultra-violent Troma Toxic Avenger movies they were loosely based on. But I guess since the same animation company that made the OT TMNT also made TC, you can't help but see the similarities;

PYSCHO & BONE HEAD = BEBOP & ROCKSTEADY
RADIATION RANGERS = FOOT SOLDIERS

I even remember Toxie even saying in one episode " Just because we're mutants, doesn't mean we have to live in the sewers."

Always wanted to see someone use that exact phrase on a forum as there is so many things wrong with that statement.

1) The source footage for Power Rangers is Super Sentai. The source footage for Voltron is GoLion. Super Sentai predates GoLion by at least 4 years.
2) Both are made by Toei and Bandai, so neither is ripping off the other. Toei and Bandai are just doing what they know best which is big gaint robots.
3) Spider-Man had a gaint transforming robot before either show
