Ah yes, another classic episode. April, April, April. This ep had a lot of April *coughs*rearshots*coughs* and Shredder using her to get to Splinter. And of course, the whole scene in the chinese take-out place with April posing as a 'food critic'. "Thanks guys... I'll reccomend this place to my friends..."

I smell trouble...
Can't be worse than the food.

Well, April, how does it feel being a human again?
Awful! My nails are absolutely ruined from walking around on all fours!
Yep, she's back to being a woman again!

I like when Shredder teleports Bebop and Rocksteady to the landfill, and they fall down into the sewers and fight the TMNT.

I featured this episode recently in my TMNT: Gone Wrong! series:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9t9zj_tmnt-gone-wrong-episode-4_shortfilms

Also, it should be noted that this episode gave Playmates Toys the opportunity to make a Cat Woman April figure:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/slimer2erasmus/TMNT/tmntmutapril.jpg

Too bad they never produced a non-mutatin' properly scaled version ala:

Yeah, but the original Playmates design was from 1990 according to Ryan Brown's site, so it looks like it just took them a while to move from concept to production.

The best is when the turtles are just chillin' watching tv eating pizza, and all of sudden Bebop and Rocksteady just wonder in. They turn to look at them and for a moment they are all like...WTF!?!?

Priceless.

my favorite quote from episode is the exchange between Raphael and Donatello right before they go into the chinese resturant.

Raphael: boy guys, I'm getting pretty bored with these private eye outfits.

Donatello: oh sorry guys, but our french poodle out fits are still at the dry cleaners.

Bwaahaaha!

and Donatello says it so nonchalantly. LOL!

Weird how they decided to make the figure YEARS after the episode...

The episode first aired in 1988, and the first TMNT toys were launched that year. First, you need to launch the basic things, not something from a single episode.

According to that chart, April is a year younger than what her original stat chart says, which is that she's "a young 25" and 115 pounds.

So does that make the Mutatin' April figure a prequel to the original?:)

Might have been cool if they could have designed her more like this:

And why did her eyes turn from black to green in this episode?

I always thought her eyes were light blue as a cat mutant. It's really weird since they changed her regular eye color to blue in the last three seasons.

Hi, personally I really liked this episode.

Her eyes looked like she were more cat like. But i didn´t liked the error with her tail deleted in some parts. I think they could have done a mutation reverse scene at least.

Speaking of this, ¿anyone knows a good fanfic about catwoman April?

welcome to the drome Lagunax.

I really adored this episode but i thought April was depicted way too bitchy in many ways. Like her disdain for doing the fat cabby interveiw. And how she threw a vase at Vernon...

But other than that I liked the animation in this episode. Every one looked very good this episode.

I'm late on this but...

Would anyone want to do a story on fat cabbies with horrendous breath who get in your face?

Also, she threw the vase at Vernon because she was under the intense stress of the mutation process and losing her mind.

I don't think April was out of character in this episode. It's all understandable when you consider the circumstances. Now was she just plain stupid checking out that warehouse, getting on the platform and standing there until the machine turned on? Yes. Was she stupid for going back to try to reverse the process herself? Yes. But that's just OT April being OT April.

I thought "Enter:The Fly" was the homage to The Fly.:twink: Still it was an interesting episode. The fact April became a fish woman later on and has a number of notable episodes around. The most interesting bits happened in the turtle's lair when Bebop and Rocksteady accidently stumbled upon it and then later when April was sent after Splinter.

Hey Swedenfan,in episode #17 "Catwoman of Channel Six" April while spying on Shredder gets her atoms crisscrossed with a cat and Shredder uses a collar device to control her. April is able to break it and the turtles are able to reverse the process. She is a mutant cat but there was no mutagen required this time. this episode is when Irma first meets the TMNT.

I do like April's look as a cat-mutant; it could have made for a good follow-up episode if the series had decided to revisit the theme. It was an unexpected twist seeing her as a crazy, villainous threat. I'm a big fan of classic monster movies like Lon Chaney's The Wolfman, so episodes like this definitely appeal to me.

I've always thought this was a very cool episode, even though some of its internal logic falls apart at a number of points.

How does Shredder know the effects of the Matter Transporter (malfunctioning, no less) are temporary? Why does a mind control collar prolong a temporary mutation as long as its still attached to a person's neck? Are we to assume that Bebop just carries around a rat in his vest pocket for fun (I can believe that, actually)? Why did Shredder have the forethought to install cameras in random alleys so that he could watch April lead the tiger into the sewers but not have the idea to track her movements all the way and determine the location of the turtle's sewer lair? How the heck do the turtles return that tiger to the zoo after locking him in their lair's large sewer cage (the mere existence of such a thing also raises some odd questions as well)? Did that orange cat that got zapped with April exhibit any human personality traits?

There are a good number of major animation mistakes too, most noticeably the inexplicable Leonardo-Donatello swap-out at the climax. April's mutated appearance appears to get off-model quite a bit and her tail mysteriously comes and goes and random points.

I would have liked to see future writers deal with Splinter's fear of cats ("the one creature he truly fears!") similar to how Splinter helped Leonardo to overcome his fear of snakes in "Snakes Alive."

Anyhoo, this episode was a big influence on my Master Splinter fan-comic, "Nothing to Fear (http://oldmanwinters.deviantart.com/journal/quot-Nothing-to-Fear-quot-My-first-Fan-Comic-261885296)." And Powder did an awesome job coloring this piece of fan-art that I drew:

Is it me or does this episode share a little bit in common with The Old Switcheroo? You have a mind transfer machine, plus when the Turtles meet a brown/orange cat on the street, if you listen carefully it says "April" in a talking cat voice. Unlike the Old Switcheroo, we don't see April transitioning back to her normal self on that mind transfer machine.

Nice art above, oldmanwinters.

So many observations, and I have made a few in other threads. Some I had said with the stray Don picked up, and, of course, when Irma becomes full-on protagonist with this episode.

As a cheap plotpoint or plothole, as oldmanwinters noted with the tiger at the Lair among other plotholes, what about the first tiger by the alley near April's place? That tiger wasn't exactly caught or foiled by the Turtles. The segment was filler, surely, but hopefully the equivalent of animal control caught him or her in time. Otherwise..., oops.

Also, did anyone else notice that Cat April actually said "kill" a few times in her dialogue? The show had to be toned down by that point, yet not completely with allowing that to be said. Or after years of viewing animation, hearing "kill" and its variants always surprises.

MikeandRaph87

I know that (I saw every episode of that show). I talk about the Batman one that JakeSully mentioned.

Oh, I misunderstood which of the two you were asking about. Anyway, its the episode of Batman:The Animated Series which shows Catwoman get infected by a virus that makes her temporarily cat-like. It was a virial strain that was created by Professor Milo that caused this. The episode was called "Cat Scratch Fever" and means it literally.

Your right about the sensors,KM. I honestly had not thought of it. Usually the word "destory" was in place of "kill" and we all knew it meant the same thing.

JakeSully
03-13-2012, 07:59 PM
incorrect, Cat Scratch Fever was about Catwoman who got bitten by her own cat that got infected by Professor Milo and had a fever. "Tyger Tyger" is the episode i refer to when i mentioned the same thing like April happened to Selina Kyle and the villain in that wasn't Professor Milo, it was Dr. Emile Dorain.

Now that could make a good fanfiction story crossover of Batman TAS and Ninja Turtles, Dr. Dorain and Professor Milo joining Shredder as they want April and change her back into a catwoman and Dorain and Milo have other mutants including Tygrus who develops a crush on April but April needs to be human again with a mutagen cure that Milo has developed. I could see the turtles plus Tygrus fighting some of the criminal mutants of Dorain/Milo/Shredder plus try to cure April back to being a human again.

Oh, I totally forgot about that scene! It's probably the most inexplicable part of the whole episode too. In previous scenes, we saw April breaking the tiger out of the zoo and escorting him through New York alleys in broad daylight.

All of a sudden, we see the tiger attacking the turtles outside April's apartment. They elude him thanks to the fire escape and never give him a second thought. But where was April the whole time? Was she playing with a ball of yarn down the street? Was she breaking into a fish market for a quick snack? The whole scene is just so random. And after the turtles look at photographs with Irma at the apartment they go looking for April (assuming she's turned into an alley cat or something). At that point, the tiger has rejoined April in the sewer lair to kill Splinter. What the heck?

I can't help but think Richard Merwin wrote up a script (without that tiger scene) and submitted to his editor at the studio. At that point, somebody told him, "Hey, there's not enough ACTION in this script! Add a fight scene or a chase or something!" And then the tiger in the alley scene must have been augmented to the script. I really don't get it.

But here's some scans of that scene from the manga adaptation, translated by DrSpenger! Even in Japanese it doesn't make sense!

I think I prefer the manga version, as the tiger actually swiped at Don.

I made a point to see the episode a few times, recently, as until the DVD, I haven't seen it since 89. For whatever reasons, FHE never released the episode on video. Bah.

The "a superior telling Merwin to insert an action scene for filler" theory makes the most sense. I need to re-view it, as I keep forgetting if she let out two tigers or not. I don't know I keep blanking on that detail, as that's a big one. And then, Irma beat them to the apartment, anyway, which made the prior scene even more pointless. Hah....

Still, Don's lion-tamer act was amusing to see, so it didn't bother me all that much. Besides, the episode had more positive aspects, anyway -- Irma, the fact Bebop and Rocksteady put up a decent fight in the Turtles' liar, etc. The street tiger bit is a logic fail, but I'm willing to overlook it as the good outweighed the bad.

I also noticed during Krang and Shredder's final exchange (quite humorous with Krang's repairman bit), Krang did mention in passing about returning the Technodrome to Earth. I don't know if the foreshadowing meant to be that subtle for the next episode or not, but, at least, it was there.

And how do the TMNT and Splinter suspect Shredder using a matter transporter when they are more familar with Krang's dimensional portals?

As I recall, it was Splinter who first figured it was a matter transporter. Come to think of it, Leo was the one who thought of using the particle accelerator in "Teenagers from Dimension X." Both characters are quite intelligent, surely, yet when it comes to the science aspects, knowing such details off-hand comes off as a surprise. Or, to be less generous, such exact knowledge could be perceived as out-of-character. You make the call.

Speaking of the manga, who did the art? Because it looks familiar, but I can't think exactly from whom.

shouldn't Donatello's been ripped apart from the swipe from the tiger?

Donatello's a tough cookie, but I think the trash can may have absorbed some of the blow, even if the tiger slash knock it away.

Anyway, the manga shows the tiger had a somewhat inglorious end to his Turtle Attack idea:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/slimer2erasmus/manga/TigerFail.jpg

But on the very next page, he's right back with April sneaking through the alleys. The fact that Shredder can see them doing this suggests he had a little more tech at work than just a camera on the collar. And I would think if the camera was on the collar it should have been a relatively easy process to pinpoint the location of the turtles' sewer lair:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/slimer2erasmus/manga/Tiger_with_April.jpg

Unless, of course...
This little incident with April served as a reason for Splinter and the Turtles to relocate their lair to the design that we ended up seeing regularly in Season 3 and beyond. Knowing that she had compromised the old location would explain the different appearance of the lair that appears through most of Season 2 from the rest of the series.

Speaking of the manga, who did the art? Because it looks familiar, but I can't think exactly from whom.

If I remember, correctly, three Japanese artists rotated duties on the 15-volume Dengeki Comics adaptations of the TV series: Tsutomu Oyamada, Zuki Mora, and Yoshimi Hamada.

Hamada did the art duties for The Catwoman from Channel Six story. He draws in a very "cutesy" style and likes to recycle his own art from time to time. Here's DrSpengler's original take (forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=25335) on it if you're interested.

Sorry for the crummy looking manga scans, folks. This was one of the first issues I ever bought and I was really careful when scanning since I was scared to death of damaging the spine. However, I've come to discover they are pretty sturdy books; if somebody ever wants to translate the whole series, I'd be happy to offer my scanning services!

Or...

Maybe Shredder used his Hologram Machine later seen in "Cowabunga, Shredhead" to send a fake tiger image to distract the turtles while April led the real beast into the sewer?

Man, we are so far past the point of over-analyzing this episode!

I have the episode cued up on my laptop's DVD player, with a few screenshots. Apologies for the lesser quality, as I'm doing it in a hurry and my higher-quality DVD playing software is presently miffed at me.

First shot and onward, we see only one tiger, on-screen. And then April lets out said tiger and end scene. Here are a few shots.

Right after the Turtles' clash with their tiger, cut back to April and her tiger. Then switch to Shredder/Krang dialogue/snark as they view her and her pet.

As a bonus cap, here is the "first" (or is that second?) tiger swiping at Don (in case anyone doubted it, as I had):

Either, April allowed the tiger to wander off and go to her apartment and the animal suddenly returned to her -- as the Turtles didn't contain that one -- or she simply released another tiger off-screen before her hunt for Splinter. It's a plothole, either way, but on-screen, she unleashed just one from the cage. So, mystery semi-solved?

I always wondered if that zoo was supposed to be the same one that Shredder routinely broke into to steal the animals he used for mutation experiments: Rhino, Warthog, lion, gorilla, cows, and moles.

In "Planet of the Turtleoids," that "zoo" from which Shredder stole the animals was called the "City Wild Animal Park," even though one would think it would probably be a stand-in location for the Central Park Zoo.

The big thing is how it teleported itself from April's apartment to tangle with the Turtles back to April's side in the lair to attack Splinter.

Eh, you can only get so much mileage out of a "OMG, April Gets Mutated!" session. I figured the most logical corresponding episodes to pair with this one would be "New York's Shiniest" (Richard Merwin's only other episode on this series) and "Wererats from Channel Six" (feels like a spiritual sequel in title and tone even though it's written by David Wise and never even references this episode). Both of those episodes we've already done. Come to think of it, many of the episodes we've recorded contain references to this episode, since it is one of the more pivotal ones from a continuity standpoint.

I guess I'd like to keep this one in the tank unless we could somehow get a hold of somebody like Mr. Merwin to shed some light on the creative process.

It seemed like a logical pairring. You can always do one and sometime later like a month do the other. The whole Ray Fillet debacle and the Ray character, comparison to the molecule switch to the DNA alteration gas and the fact April was not transformed with mutagen! She was however turned into a female turtle in an Archie special while her friend was a squirrel if I recall. Don't forget the topic of fights in the lair from CFCS. Either way you have options! :tcool:

Since I have listened to each of the conversations thus far I ask what is the can for the future? :tgrin:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't animated Tokka and Rahzar also come from the same zoo where Groundchuck and Dirtbag came to be? I have to re-watch "Dirk Savage," again, but I do recall that, or I think I do. Either way, interesting how apparently one zoo became a nexus for all many of the animal mutants in the series.

Anyway, moving on somewhat, at least, the conditions for the cat mutation are self-explanatory or doesn't require much thinking. Conversely, a few episodes earlier we had Baxter's simliar mutation (or similarly inspired, as per the 50's Fly references in both episodes). While I could grasp that the energy could allow the fly to merge with Baxter, how that fusion somehow prevented him from being vaporized escapes me. Or it's about application of the energy and the machinery -- Baxter's case was meant to atomize him, whereas, April's was more re-arrange and re-assemble. Different machines, different uses of energy, etc.

Not that the show would or could explain the science in any real detail, but some examples are easier to deal or understand better than others. Or, I'm overthinking it, after all. Drat.

KM,it was not specified if the mutagen that Shredder unleashed in the zoo was when Roadkill Rodney released the warthog and rhino or four years later when the zoo was returned to and Shredder had a lion and gorilla set for mutation when Bebop and Rocksteady released Groundchuck and Dirtbag and Kerma freeded the chained lion and gorilla. Theere is nothing within either episode to indicate that other animals were freed other that what was shown. So its your choice of which of the two instances stirred the mutation of Razhar and Tokka. Personally I choose the time Groundchuck and Dirtbag were einadvertingly mutated.

Actually, I was just thinking out loud and carrying out the thought. As technically speaking, it isn't completely unfeasible to purpose that it all could be from one zoo. Although, my general assumption was that different zoos were involved. And like you, I tend to infer Tokka and Rahzar being a later by-product from the same time and place with Groundchuck and Dirtbag's mutation. Forgive my speculative bent, as I tend to overthink such minor details and I sometimes end up with many side tangents.

Anyway, curious how Raph was forward enough to say Irma's name to her face during the apartment sequence, even though, on-screen, she hadn't said her name to the Turtles. They already knew who she was (i.e., "Case of the Killer Pizzas"), but it's either interesting or, frankly, Merwin or something forgetting about such details.

Agreed. Irma's role in the episode really enhanced it. Which is why the episode's plotholes, glaring as they are, personally don't bother me, as it would under normal conditions. Certain plotholes in certain episodes could become major dealbreakers (the break in the Baxter narrative with "Landlord of the Flies"), yet not so here. Because some episodes can still be enjoyable or have merit, despite plothole X or Y.

Moving on, anyone have any thoughts to Clarke and Coleman's Bogie impression when confronted in the restaurant? A rather amusing bit, especially when Mike gave up. "Okay, so I can't do Bogie."

As for mikeandraph87's latest comment, I always defer to the MST3K mantra, "it's only a TV show, so I should just relax." Your way of saying it is just as nice, too.

What was it with Baxter in "Landlord of the Flies"? I recall that episode, something with Baxter Stockman's personality?

Actually, it seems like "Return of the Technodrome" was written right after "Return of the Shredder", so that's probably why Irma acts as she does in "Return of the Technodrome".

As I recall, wasn't his alien computer ally missing from that one? Because that seems like quite the omission. Either way, I was trying to find an instant example to my thesis (certain plotholes being dealbreakers in certain episodes).

I have to re-watch the "Return of Technodrome" episode, but the narrative seemed rather straight to me. In that one, April didn't do the denying or what she usually does when Irma asks her about the Turtles. (Which is ironic, because as the season began, Irma was rather dubious about the Turtles' existence. In turn, it's a contradiction, as the Turtles were becoming quite publicized since the original mini-series.) Unless you're picking up something that I'm missing, which is always possible.

You're not wrong, though, in that scripts can often be written, animated and aired than the writers' intended order or narrative flow. I haven't watched enough of the series to fully assert that or cite examples, yet it wouldn't be surprising, either.

Its not often fights happen in the lair and the fact this one had two makes this episode awesome.

Is this episode what makes people think April is the cat's meow? :tlol:

Definitely she was the cat's knees, literally! LOL, just like Cheetara, Felicia from Darkstalkers, Cleo from Heathcliff, Jenny from Bucky O'Hare, Pumraya or whatever catgirl in cartoons there is.

What do you think of my fanfiction story idea crossover of Batman TAS and TMNT so far? it be interesting to see Professor Milo and Dr. Dorain join forces with Shredder and Baxter as they turn April back into a catperson again yet Tygrus the man-cat falls for her but the Ninja Turtles need to cure her again fast as they fight off more mutants and must deal with Milo and Dorain before they can give April the special cure.

The thing I didn't care for in "Landlord" was they had come up with a bug invasion plot that involved Baxter with no mention of how he got out of limbo, the absence of his computer friend who was nothing but a chip by then. and the fact that he let Shredder and Krang trick him again into thinking they'd return him to normal when he succeeded. The bug invasion was handled better in "Michaelangelo Meets Bugman Again", also in that season.

"Catwoman" is one of my favorite episodes even if it's because Irma officially joins the team and I'm a sucker for episodes where a character gets possessed/mutated. Also, in that episode, April found Shredder's secret hideout he'd been using for awhile without the Turtles finding it. Instead of having them find and wreck his lair, it was Bebop and Rocksteady who did it. :p

PM me or post a link to it on my wall I don't remember seeing the thread honestly. I confess that Bruce,Dick, and Barbara are second favorite hero team and would go nuts at the idea of them working with the Ninja Turtles. However, for a time Power Rangers was my second favorite and when I gotthe team up dream it was a spit in the face.Never looked at PR again after this epside but its more to it than that.

I am well versed on Bat villains but don't remember Dr. Dorain.Milo of course was the one behind Moon of Wolf in Batman#255 and Lupus condition. I wonder how that versus mutagen would work? There is also Hugo Strange and Ra's al Ghul who have created a serum to create monsterous beings out of men. That might inspire alternate plots for you.

Going back at the episode at hand,April being turned into a mutat should only be temporary but should be done just once per version. Like Winters said you can only take April as a mutant so far but it can be an interesting twist.

Although, this episode would later set the trend of "we must mutate April into something, once per season." No wonder Cat April is quite popular -- as per her "Mutations" action figure and the main line, had Playmates opted to go there -- for she is the trendsetter.

For a different tangent, this episode apparently first showed Bebop and Rocksteady's penchant for Chinese takeout. (Which was also a plotpoint in Season 3's Turtle Terminator.) It also answered a question at that point in the series, as "what do some of the villains eat?" The protagonists' eating habits are established, ten times over, from the first episode onward, yet not so much with the antagonists until much later (unless one counts "Killer Pizzas" with Baxter commenting about the pizzas and Shredder hating anchovies).

I know that's how he got stuck in "Son of the Return" and his return in "Revenge of the Fly", but I just meant that "Landlord of the Flies" is poorly made because Baxter is just there with no explanation of how he got out. Even in ""Revenge", Raphael and Krang mentioned how he was misplaced between dimensions when it was Donatello who got rid of him in "Landlord". Anyways...

If nothing else, it would make for a funny comedy bit. Shredder orders them to empty their pockets for some reason, and out comes the mouse or mice. Hilarity ensues.

Then again, the punks don't bathe much, or so we're told, so maybe it isn't so strange. Rats are not the most santitary creatures, unless you're Splinter. And if the rats have fleas, oh, dear....

"ZOMG! Bebop brought back the bubonic plague!"

Or, to jump ahead in the series, imagine if he had the mouse whenever the Rat King first appear. Oh, dear.

I did, albeit several years later, in 1992. Better late than never.

Searched around the now-dead Cowabunga Cartoon Classics blog for its sketch of Cat April, intended for the main toy line in 1990. It's a shame Playmates didn't go for it, but they somewhat corrected the matter, two years later with the Mutations line.
