View Full Version : Nickelodeon: "they want to focus on the '80s toon Turtles"

That's the word on Nickelodeon's modus operandi for TMNT.

Not a surprise. Looks like the fans who wanted the return of Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady will finally get their wish.
Who knows. I hope the TV series can at least be the same tone as the 2k3 show. Meh.

My last remaining hope is that they do something about the racist and sexist overtones in the original toon.

I guess it REALLY isn't a surprsie....but an updated slightly darker old toon with old va's? Can my dream really come true?
Where can I send my CG models? I want to put those thing to good use!

Could be interesting, especially if the toon gets a darker tone. Where did you read/hear this Andrew?

A TMNT show in the vein of the Archie comics would be awesome...but I'm biased. :D

No surprise really, Nick didn't buy TMNT without wanting to use the 80's characters (there really isn't any worthwhile story elements though), I can only pray the series maintains the tone of the 2k3 series or Avatar.

I think this is cool as sh*t for the cartoon... but it ain't how I envisioned the movie. I hope they're totally un-related.

Now that you mention it, this may very well mean a change in direction for the movie, the Mirage origin movie may be out the window.

It's a Latin expression. "Method of Operating," basically.

I'm not going to believe this, because I can't possibly imagine a movie studio in the year 2012 greenlighting a movie where a Japanese man is physically turned into a rat. I can't wrap my mind around that.
...
Then again, they did whitewash the entire cast of Avatar, except for the badguys, of course.
Ugh, now I'm all sick to my stomach again.

If going with the 1980s cartoon version of the Turtles for this new gig is even half as entertaining as "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" (a show I absolutely love) then I'm down with it. No point in throwing a fit. S'not the like Viacom would listen to me, anyway.

I'm cool with this stuff. I've always been cool with this stuff.
As long as it doesn't become the sole face of the TMNT. That's why I still have major trepidations about the buyout. This is a fine idea for a cartoon, as long as there are other versions available in some way, shape or form. Even if it's just TPBs and whatnot.

With Nick being in complete control of the Turtles now and with how nothing's come out of them or Mirage about the movie, they could very easily turn it to CG and throw Krang in there like it's nobody's business. I just hope that they do what you said instead.

First of all 2k3 show will still air on CW4kids till 2012, and there are probably many fans of it! If Nick cancels adgier 2k3 or comics fans will kill them (by hate mails:evilgrin: ), I actually think Nick will help publishing comics. Maybe they'll put them on commercial or something! Man, a movie with Rocksteady, Bebop and Krang would be the coolest thing ever. We got our dark Turtle movies but I still feel like I was ROBBED of having Rocksteady and Bebop in Secret of the Ooze. I'd love to see those two on the big screen.
I do think this means the end of the different iterations of TMNT (dark 2K3 cartoon, darker black and white comics, "retro" style stuff)... I think Nickelodeon will market under one unified style. It'd be nice to see Ryan Brown involved but I won't hold my breath.
Maybe they'll continue to license the "retro" style stuff. Who knows?

I'm sure this doesn't come to a surprise to any of us, but is anyone feeling a bit mixed on it?
When Laird was in control I was bummed by the fact that a new show that resembled the OT more would never happen again. But now I feel the opposite, I'm bummed that nothing resembling the NT will ever happen again.
Anyways a mix of the OT and the NT would be the perfect show for me, I hope thats what they go for. And even if its nothing like the NT and mostly like the OT I'll love it.
F*ck you. Clone Wars is awesome.
Is it really?
I watched the first half of season 1, and it was a weird blend. It had deaths and serious themes yet there was virtually no plot, so it wasn't too kid friendly and it wasn't for adults either since it was a bit dull. Most episodes showed potential though and it looked amazing.

I was actually wondering about all the merch that's out right now and how that'll be affected. Considering that 90% of it is OT-related and Nick wants to focus on the OT, I don't think we'll need to worry too much about it going off the shelves completely.

It's a sad fact but the majority of casual TMNT fans started with the 80s toon and have absolutely NO idea that it was originally a bloody, black & white comic book. What they recall is the humor, slapstick tone that the 80s toon brought. Even I feel that 2k3 was the superior show, the 80s toon is clearly the most popular aka most profitable. I hope they can find some kind of medium between the seriousness of the comic book and the zanyiness of the old toon. AKA as long as the Shredder isn't a complete moron but is not a freakin' Terminator, I'll be happy. (Trust me, Ch'rell pretty much was unstoppable up until the very end.)

Makes me wonder if we'll see the return of the Technodrome. Krang just wouldn't make sense without his huge battle fortress and his army of Rock Soldiers.

I would love to see the Technodrome again! When I say that 1980s Turtles isn't a bad idea, I don't mean that Season 5 slapstick junk and "mad scientist of the week" stuff should be there. However, anyone with half a brain could make something like an underground battle fortress be completely cool.
Here's to hoping that Season 1 is their main reference on how to go about the style of the action, the competency of the characters, and the intelligence of the humor.
CyberCubed
10-22-2009, 08:15 PM
Yeah, I agree with you. I hope the Foot Soldiers remain human though, it makes more sense to see Shredder train an army of Foot than go back to robots.

I love Bebop & Rocksteady, as well as some other characters from the original cartoon, but I didn't whine when they didn't make it into 2K3. Even if this new series wipes the slate clean and has no previous characters other than the essentials, as long as the show doesn't blow, it'll be fine with me.

I wish I could say that, but we already know what Nick roughly wants to do and with the source material they're using for inspiration being kind of all over the place in quality over a ten year run, it could easily "blow" if they focus on the wrong portion of that material.

Yeah, there's always the old stuff to look back on and that's what I've been telling myself since the news was announced, but it's not like I can just drop it like that since what we're getting in a few years may very well be the only new TMNT stuff we'll be getting for the forseeable future.

I don't know how to take this. I hated the OT. I hated how the turtles looked all cute and cuddly. I hated how they never did any actual martial arts fighting that was even slightly memorable. I hated how the villains never seemed to pose any type of threat. But I would have to think/hope that after the incredibly awesome 2k3 toon that rebooted my interest in the franchise after so many years, they will at least attempt to incorporate some of the fighting techniques and seriousness of that show into the new toon. If one of the turtles defeats Shredder by throwing a pizza in his face and calling that "a fight", then I will take my leave and just pray for the remaining 2k3 episodes (seasons 3 and 4) to be released on dvd so I can always remember TMNT for how I loved them most.

It sounds like good news if they keep the actual ninja-ness and kick-ass action.
See, back in the day, He Man fans compared their revised series to the TMNT revised series. He Man brought back all the characters and made them bad-ass and able to actually fight, which was barely allowed in the old cartoon. Turtles also made them bad ass and able to fight more than they did in the old cartoon, but aside from the turtles, Shredder and a few other characters, all the OT guys were gone. And even Shredder was different with the Utrom deal that rubbed alot of people the wrong way.
If they stick the basic concept of mutagen, Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, Mutants, Technodrome and Dimension X, without the goofiness and camp and putting in awesome fight scenes and action.... you got yourself a winner.
Kendamu
10-22-2009, 08:43 PM

10-22-2009, 08:47 PM
Yea, I didn't like the whole Utrom Shredder deal. In fact, I thought some of the least interesting fights in the show were against Shredder. They were so short. until the end, it was mainly a turtle taking a shot at Shredder, missing, and then Shredder knocking them out cold with one punch. Very little martial arts fighting. I found the fights with Agent Bishop and Karai/Elite Foot far more engaging. But even though I thought the Utrom Shredder idea was a bad one, they were still better than anything I remember from the OT.

It would be really cool to see Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady in the new show. I hope Lord Dregg is in it too. I always wanted to see him come back. I wouldn't mind seeing characters like Rocksteady and Bebop again. The quality of the show is going to depend on the writing, not what characters they use. Over the years, even a classic character like The Joker was reduced to a non-threatening goofball (like in the 50's). The characters can easily be re-written to be more threatening.

That's exactly what I'm hoping for. I liked that fact that, in the first season of the OT, Bebop, Rocksteady, and the Stone Warriors were an actual threat despite the mutants' lack-of-intelligence and the Stone Warriors' lack-of-understanding in Earth technology. I know I harp on this in nearly every thread, but that's what I'm hoping for with Nick wanting to draw more from the 80s toon than anything else.
They're looking for a mix of ninja action to draw in young boys and the comedy the Turtles are known for that, according to Nick, meshes well with their style of comedy in their TV shows.

As an adult accepting a series that is like the old toon might be painful. Had I been 6 when BTTS was on like I was with the old toon when I turned 20 I might have had love for it because of how awesome it would have been to me as a kid. However that wasn't the case and BTTS was just horrid and basically unwatchable.
And any ways if they want to focus on the 80's toon then make it normal animation not this CGI garbage.

Wow this is actually good news. I loved the old toon (still missing some dvd sets). Its nice to know Nick is making a shred of effort (no pun intended) to appeal to the older fans, still like noted before, it comes down to the writing.
Im still not that happy about the whole thing because for the longest time now, Nick has trend of canceling almost every new show that doesnt catch on the second it airs.
I know TMNT has a bigger following than most of thier current stuff so it should have an a bit of an advantage, or maybe not, Nick doesnt really seem to care about thier own creations unless its an overnight sensation and classics from the 90's still dont have DVD releases.
On a side note, whats with all the hate for the old toon? Ive never read the comics but the old toon was great. Sure its goofy but seeing it again in my 20s, its not as bad as some are saying. Besides the villian/monster of the week it had fun fight scenes and cool weapons.

I can agree with this...I think we need to go back to "old school" I mean if they are going to focus on 80's then...be 80's they didn't have that CGI junk for cartoons.
Toons back then, IMO, took a lot more work and dedication. I think that shows in your final work.

It's probably just me, but when I like something enough I find myself drawn to all aspects of it. If there's a movie based on a book, I go buy the book. If there are novels based on a movie, I go find the movie. So...it boggles my mind when people are a fan of a cartoon that was originally a comic series....don't go and read the comic series.
http://ninjaturtles.com/html/comic.htm
Scroll to the bottom of the page. There you'll find free scans of the first seventeen issues of "Turtles Prime". It's not going to cost you anything but time, and if you still don't get a hint of what us Old Schoolers are about, then all you've wasted was time.
I have a healthy dose of respect for the old 'toon, I do. It's what got me into this whole thing from the get go. But...looking back? With the exception of a few episodes, all I get from the old cartoon is the nostalgia value. It's possible that I'm just too old for them now, hell...I can't watch Roadrunner cartoons now without getting massive amounts of contact embarrassment for the coyote, and I used to love watching him go splat as a kid.
'Course, as a kid I actually got to see him hit the canyon floor, instead of just hear it on a completely black screen, but I digress.
In my opinion the original cartoon's flaws far outweigh that nostalgia value. So to me, hearing that Nick wants to go that route...well it damn well disappoints me. Especially when I get the impression that the creators wouldn't have allowed such a thing to get created in the first place, if they'd known what they were doing at the time.
The sale to Nick says to me that Laird just got tired of trying to fight the current, and took himself out of the river entirely. Which...now all I can think of is that there's some unmutated Peter Laird somewhere out there, while a six foot tall Bloodsucker is parading around in his stead.
Sadly that's not likely to be a reference you'll catch, as those issues of Vol 1 hadn't been scanned in time. But trust me, "The River" is one of the better B&W story arcs.

WHAT flaws? Don't even bother listing them, because it doesnt matter, you've fallen right into the usual samey pattern a lot of elitists fall into. Again, it's just some boring fad and a show of ignorant testerone to dislike something you enjoyed as a kid.
"Nostalgia" is the most overbearing and cliched term ever devised to excuse enjoying something that would otherwise have no problem showing it to their kids
I could argue most of the comics don't f*cking hold up either, especially in contrast to ARCHIE....but that would be ignorant of me considering the non-Laird and Eastman material is of fine quality. I'm OBJECTIVE enough to know that..but someone, somewhere, IS thinking without rose-tinted glasses on some of those early issues...not that I'd respect his or her opinion either, because it's likewise ignorant, but the tables being turned on things you enjoy more now may wake you up one day to how others view the thrashing of the original series.
If you didnt like the original series from the beggining, I'd understand THAT, but to say it doesnt hold up is bulls*it, especially if you enjoyed it a long time ago. You'd still enjoy it, it's simply the state of the bitch-ass snobbery perpetuated in the animation industry has programmed you into thinking things have a "sell by date"

If you didnt like the original series from the beggining, I'd understand THAT, but to say it doesnt hold up is bulls*it. Like it or not, the original series IS the definitive version in the mainstream and it IS what people remember the franchise the most for. That's what REALLY eats at everyone against it, and I love every inch of it.
You could argue that, and you'd be right.
Read through the first two color trades last night, and no...they're really not the best written things ever produced by man. But I like them. And part of the reason why I like them is because they take me back. Which...if you can find a better synonym for "nostalgia" to express that feeling...by all means feel free to grind it into the ground.
And the Archie stuff? Hell's yeah that's great stuff. Mitchrony is still to this day one of my favorite comic artists of all time. I for one am really disappointed that the Archie series won't get its very well deserved resolution.
And yeah, I felt the same way when the DreamWeave comics went under as well.
You seem to be suffering under the delusion that elitism is a bad thing, which...is kind of amusing to me,...because I thought the anti-intellectual thing was a US-centric phenomenon.
Also...your own latent sexism is showing. I'm not a male.

There was so much "in the internet"/Tron stuff going on in Volume 4 that it was really very distracting. I mean, if Laird doesn't do his 18 issues a year how will we ever know if they actually get around to collecting all of Splinter's databits?

I think it's obvious why Nick wants to focus on the 80's toon:
That was when the Turtles were in there prime and at the most marketable.
Nick obviously wants to make a repeat of that success and hopefully things will be different this time(ie more action, Mikey gets to keep his nunchucks, Baxter is black, etc)
And what do you mean sexist undertones? If by racist you're referring to Baxter, I'd agree, but sexist? Where?

And what do you mean sexist undertones? If by racist you're referring to Baxter, I'd agree, but sexist? Where?
Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of what happens to Splinter in the OT, than I was the white washing of Stockman. Case could be made that the Mirage book was racist for having the only people of color in the book be the bad guys. But...since we're talking about the OT here, I'll stick to Splinter.
In the OT Splinter was Hamato Yoshi which is really...uncool in a very fundamental way. During WWII, there was a whole lot of US propaganda against Japan that dehumanized the Japanese people by depicting them as rodents. I know as a white kid in the 80s I had no idea about this connection, and hell...it wasn't until a few years ago that I'd even heard tale of the depictions. And on a Smallville board of all things.
My hope is that the new Nicktoon will follow the Mirage Books, Movies, and 2k3 series and keep Splinter as Yoshi's pet.
As for the sexism?
April. Just...April. April in her objectified, cleavage bearing, bright yellow jumpsuit. Turtles Forever got that bit right, you really can set your watch by how many times April needs rescuing. I mean, the Mirage books are guilty of it too, and while one could argue that a good chunk of her damsel in distress'ness was really thumbing a nose at Frank Miller, it's still there.
Irma? The man-hungry dowdy friend of the hot-chick? That's a trope the media could do without another example of.
I'm not even going to try to go near the Cultural Appropriation topic, because I am by no means well versed in the trope to discuss it at length, but there's a whole lot of that too.
If you're ever bored, check out TV Tropes:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2003
I'll stop here, as I can already hear the swords of detractors shaking, telling me I'm taking this "too seriously". That it's "just a kids show", and that I should "just lighten up."
To them I say, chances are good that you didn't grow up as a girl liking the turtles and constantly being told that they're for boys.
Hell, I had a five year old tell me that last month at a Con.

And I've no doubt that the Splinter shift was done to speed the story along, just as I've no doubt that a room full of white guys made that decision. A room full of white guys whose parents were alive when there were Internment Camps in the US.

I can't find a single born-and-raised-in-Japan Japanese person today who is in their 20s or 30s who knows that "Jap" is a racial slur. I doubt they know about "rodent" either. In fact, I'd probably have to translate the word "rodent" for them to understand. My Japanese teacher actually used the word "Jap" as shorthand in sentences on the board and only us white people were looking around like, "Uhhhh..." about it. After we brought it up to her, she was like, "Oh! That's weird. Anyway..." and went on with life, still using "Jap" as short for "Japanese" when writing sentences on the board.
So why are you carrying it so close to you? It's obvious that this generation of Japanese people don't give a crap and they're the people who are slowly inheriting the country as older generations age, retire, and die.
And, really, why are you carrying this with you in a discussion about a children's show and the direction Nick wants to take the Turtles? It's not like it's relevant in this thread. Interesting (I didn't know "rodent" was any sort of slur for Japanese people), but definitely not the most appropriate place for it all. Agree. It even has a name in the media: "color-blindness". It means that the person in charge are not necessarily racists, but a little clueless about race themes. A little like what happened recently with Michael Bay and the twin robots in Transformers 2.
I'm usually against suddenly changing the race or personalities of the characters just to be PC, but I think that, when making an adaptation, the people in charge should educate themselves on why the original characters where created that way, and then decide if they should continue doing it just as it was or make some adjustments. April was a damsel in distress (and also a somewhat selfish person) probably because the OT writers were just used to see female characters be like that and not because they had have a secret agenda against women. But no matter the reason, the end result looks a little bad and a little ignorant.
In short, authors should write about what they know. I'm against introducing a "minority" character in a show just because, and specially if the people in charge don't know anything about that world. If you are going to have a, say, japanese character in your show, you should either be japanese, or lern about japanese people and culture beforehand, or change the nationality of the character to one you know. Not so true, think of it this way, if you were friends with Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee, wouldn't you ask for a few martial arts pointers? I say given a long enough period of time hanging out with someone, a little of them rubs off on you. I just saw April learning to fight as character development.

The plot wasnt "poor". The comedy was slick and the episodes all had a CLEAR beggining, middle, end, and a morally sound resolution. The modern series? ANGST, ANGST, OH MY GODZ, ANNNNNGGZTZ....for a good few seasons there was less beggining, middle, and end and just "beggining, middle, beggining, middle, end, middle, beggining"..and the morality high-ground wasnt quite apt either.
Half if not most of it topped the modern series easily...That HAD a direction, true, but gradually minimised it . There was no difference by the end of it's run, yet I bet you ate it up. Once more, you can cut the hypocrisy with a knife.

I'm a better fan for understanding the original series HAD a plot, strict character development, sparingly or otherwise (and does it really matter if they have a straight-forward arc? It remains the most memorable version of the TMNT and THAT is what eats you up the most.

Although I've never heard of this rodent thing myself, being a Japanese-American, I can confirm that the word "Jap" is a very derogatory word, and not one that I or anyone in my family could easily dismiss the way your Japanese teacher did. However, since you did say "born-and-raised-in-Japan", I'm assuming your Japanese teacher was actually native Japanese. The term you described usually doesn't really strike a chord with anyone outside of the U.S. (especially a homogeneous society like Japan), since this, the U.S., is the country where that racial slur originated from.
So, ya, I just want to chime in that this word is indeed pretty offensive (at least to me and other Japanese-Americans that I know). I've been called it many times (though not as often as "gook") and am not too keen on the word. The rat thing, though, I can honestly say I've never heard of. I'm not debunking this rat thing, I'm just saying that I'm completely unfamiliar with it.

I have to say I'm worried about this direction.
I am another who cannot stand the OT anymore. I have a best friend, a few years older than me, who can't either except for its nostalgia factor. We both used to enjoy it as kids, but now that we're 26 and 29 respectively, it doesn't have the same appeal to us as it once did when were 6 years old or 9 years old.
We're not "bending to the flock" as you put, Zarius. We've grown up and our tastes have simply changed. It's a natural thing to happen, every day in fact, from even food to clothes, if you want to get technical.
There was no real plot to the series and the fighting was lame. The Turtles themselves were like clones of each other they acted so alike and two dimensional personalities. The villians were whiny and unthreatening. Shredder had to be gay for as girly as he acted most of the time. The Foot Soldiers were nothing more than mindless robots... Need I say more? It's something I ate up as a little girl like no tomorrow, but now it's something I can't see without groaning and beating my head on the nearest wall. Once in a while maybe I'll laugh, especially with the Turtles Forever clip I saw earlier this week, but mostly it's just head-beating.
I love the 2k3 series, first four seasons, for it's seriousness appeal and it's actual threatening, mostly human, villians. The real bad-ass fights from the Turtles that me, a girl, would get giddy over. There was plenty of humor in there, it wasn't hard to look for, but it wasn't so over-the-top slapstick you wanted to put your head in a bear trap.
People can diss me all they like for this, but I'm not looking for a fight. I'm only stating my opinion and some of us I think around here do tend to forget that. It's okay to have differing thoughts, that's what makes us all unique to have different things to like, but do we honestly have to rip a new one into each other because of it when we don't agree? I don't think so. You can have a good debate without having to feud like wild animals. It's a little thing called 'respect'.

That's exactly why I'm repeatedly emphasizing "Season 1, Season 1, Season effing 1!!!" when I talk about how I have hopes for Nick's new stuff not being utter crap. If someone can't see intelligent humor, real threats, actual fighting, and a plotline to Season 1 then we need to sit down and watch it together so it can be explained to you.

Indeed. Rocksteady and Bebop actually gave the Turtles a run for their money during the first season. While the first season was still a far cry from the comics, it still seemed to have a much higher level of seriousness and danger that the rest of the series (save for the polar-opposite Red Sky episodes) lacked. It's only starting from the second season that the "pizza in the face" attack became the norm.
The whole reason I got into Turtles is because classic Season 1 reminded me of Thundercats. Season 2? Not so much. Season three? Forget it. So, I agree that this would be a good thing if modeled solely after Season 1... but it would only be a matter of time before elements of the lamer eps sneak their way in. :ohwell:
Kendamu
10-23-2009, 03:25 PM
That is a big one for me: if Bebop and Rocksteady are in it, make them a threat. Make me go "uh-oh" when they show up like they did in Season 1 or when the Turtles had to fight Hun early on in 2k3. They can be as dumb as a box of rocks for all I care as long as they're super strong and have a decent armory to throw at the Turtles.
Heck, if I were Nick and using the OT as my source of inspiration, I'd use Bebop and Rocksteady as a measuring stick to say, "These two gave you this much trouble. Well, the Stone Warriors we're gonna bring over number in the thousands and each one is at least twice as strong as those two mutants," and use it as part of an overall plotline for a season.
If my worst fears come true, though, and this ends up being all comedy and no real action, I'd like to hope the comedy was at least half as funny as the TMNT Manga (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2009/05/tmnt-manga.html).

The Turtles themselves were like clones of each other they acted so alike and two dimensional personalities.
Please tell me you're joking. All of the characters in the original cartoon had very distinct personalities, which was one of its greatest strengths.
The original cartoon had great chemistry. The Turtles functioned well together, April and the Channel 6 news crew were hilarious, and Shredder/Krang/Bebop/Rocksteady also had great interactions.
All 3 major "groups" of the show had great character interaction and chemistry, and it was fun to them mix it all up with each other.
Yes, there are some aspects of the old toon that I wish were handled better, but the show is still damn entertaining and I'm almost as old as you are.

Whenever or not you find the series entertaining is irrelevant, the reasons for your opinion are what he's refering to, and he'd be right, to say the Turtles were all "the same" and two-dimensional is inane logic that flies in the face of the actual series.

...Hmm...logic's missing something here...what is it?
Pal, you havent grown up. Do NOT kid yourself on this.
Foot Soldiers were robots? Who cares? It's not like any of them had a character in the modern series either. What's the difference? None. With the former, they could get away with decapitation and splicing where it mattered (oh look, something similar happened in season one of the modern series...NO DIFFERENCE AGAIN! WOW!)
Shredder being campy? Again, big deal, it was a blend of irony, Avery was a superb V.A, his lines were gold, and he could handle his own if there were some serious elements.
No plot? The comics never had one either, the plot at best would stop and start at Kevin and Peter's leisure. And the modern series HAD a plot, and closed it far too soon...season two I beleive (Secret Origins), leaving the rest of the season to UTTERLY LIMP.
Villains were unthreatning? First of all, it wasnt thier job to be threatning, they were there to crack a joke and present a practical problem to be solved with teamwork, the usual morality play-of-the-week, with humour.
Take a look at your own laundry list, especially in a series that had to have some weight. Hun being a wallflower, Baxter being defeated fifty five thousand times and losing every inch of his body, Garbageman being...well...garbage. Cyber-Shredder? Darius? The Dark Turtles?
Need I go on? The modern series didnt have a leg to stand on by the end because it made everyone a joke far too early.
Tastes don't change, this is evident by what you are watching, how you react to it, and the willfull pretense that the modern series was above and beyond it's more succesful predecessor when there largely on the same level...at best, it just got a little further than Red Sky before it tripped up and bowed to the master by embaracing it's goofyness.

A personal view, based on insufficient grounds to produce complete certainty. Meaning, it's not a right or wrong matter.

Also...your own latent sexism is showing. I'm not a male.
And I've no doubt that the Splinter shift was done to speed the story along, just as I've no doubt that a room full of white guys made that decision.
If his assumption that you're a male is "latent sexism," isn't your assumption that the people who modified the story are all white "latent racism"? Not to mention the fact that your assumption isn't true at all as Mecha Cow pointed out...
If not, the creators just end embarrasing themselves.
How is the OT any more guilty of this than the comics it's based on? After all, the Mirage comics were the TMNT universe to introduce ninjato being referred to as "katana," sharp sai, and Japanese names that aren't valid and had to be changed when the OT was localized for Japan.
The rat thing, though, I can honestly say I've never heard of.
Add me to the list, since I've never heard that either. Besides, in all forms of TMNT that I know of, Splinter is Japanese, so the end result is exactly the same. I don't see why the fact that he was once human makes the OT any more "racist" than the other TMNT universes.
And one more thing, enough of the trolling and personal attacks. It's ok to debate, but only if you can do so without being insulting or rude. This includes bashing any particular form of TMNT or making generalizations about the forums as a whole.

Tell me one episode of the OT that had as much fighting as "The Shredder Strikes Back" or "Return To New York" or "City At War". Just one, and I will take it all back. HOWEVER, do not dare try to tell me that the turtles throwing a pizza at their enemies is a fight. I didn't like the OT for this exact reason. In fact, the OT is what killed my interest in TMNT and so I turned to X-Men instead because I couldn't stand the slapstick, silly humor any longer. You need to stop this whole "holier than thou" bullsh!t you vomit out on this forum on a daily basis. I HATED THE ORIGINAL TOON! I DESPISED IT. The things I held dear to me as a child are still held dear to me today. No one makes my decisions for me except me. I watched the OT as a child and I hated it. End of story.
And just to be clear, I have torn FF and BTTS apart from day one. Don't believe me? Go back and read my posts. Why did I hate those two series, you may ask? BECAUSE THEY WERE GETTING TOO DAMN CLOSE TO THE ORIGINAL TOON! And if you have forgotten how I feel about the OT, please feel free to read my first paragraph to remind yourself. I don't think it is, I'm trying to make the point if that if Nick is going to continue the trend, maybe they could do so without the baggage of what came before it.
I'm pretty sure I said somewhere else that one could easily make the same case against Mirage, and possible argue that since it was a parody of Frank Miller's work...which is a treasure trove of ism in and of itself, that that might get it off the hook. But I'll be damned if I can remember where I went into all of that.
Add me to the list, since I've never heard that either. Besides, in all forms of TMNT that I know of, Splinter is Japanese, so the end result is exactly the same. I don't see why the fact that he was once human makes the OT any more "racist" than the other TMNT universes.
I'll see what I can do about finding the original source for the stance. I know it's in Fandom Wank somewhere, and I'm absolutely sure it's got to do with the Smallville fandom, of all things.
Personally? I think there's a distinct difference between having an animal from Japan, and having an actual Japanese person dehumanized into a rodent. But...again, your mileage may vary.
And one more thing, enough of the trolling and personal attacks. It's ok to debate, but only if you can do so without being insulting or rude. This includes bashing any particular form of TMNT or making generalizations about the forums as a whole.
Understood.

A personal view, based on insufficient grounds to produce complete certainty. Meaning, it's not a right or wrong matter.
Isufficient? There's nothing insufficient about it. It's very plain to see that the four turtles act very different... I could actually give you a detailed example without just listing their stereotypical roles, but talking to your ignorant ass is giving me a head ache.
Hate the OT all you want, just stop telling us your reasons why. They fu*king suck.

Okay. We've come to the conclusion that the turtles may or may not be cloned from a single turtle, brainwashed to give them different personalities via hypnosis and shock therapy, and we've come to the conclusion that we are all childish by posting opinions on a message board dedicated to mainly a children's franchise with a few awesome comics thrown in between.
Can we move on?

It's good to see that we care about the turtles with our debating, thought it's very heated up.
I'm very curious how nick's animated show will be like.
maybe they'll be able to find the golden middle way between the original turtles and the animated ones and make something new and fresh.

This is something that I'm hoping for, actually. Probably won't happen, but I'm still going to hope for it.
I loved (and still love) the 2003 cartoon. The first four season were gold with their storytelling and fight scenes. And, yes, characters. Yeah, they didn't hit the nail right on the head every time with each episode, but the stories were interesting at least.
And, while I do cringe a bit watching the old cartoon, there is a charm to it I don't think will be recaptured if Nick continues pressing for a CGI show. The bad guys, while non-threatening, were down right cheesy and pathetic to the point you couldn't help but love them.
It'll be hard to get a balance, but if Nick can get it just right if they go down that path...

As long as they can still pull off nice fight scenes, then I too, agree with that. I am not a fan of CG tv shows. And the only thing I liked about the 2007 TMNT movie was the fight between Leo and Raph. The rest was pretty much a waste of time and effort.
Jack
I don't think they will go with traditional though. Nick is sort of in a CGI and Live Action boom at the moment. Well, in Australia at least. No idea what's going on in the US right now...
Yes, they have 2D/Traditional animation shows, but it's more common to find the former there. Probably because it's easier/faster to animate or something. All they need are actors or rigged models and BAM. No need to draw anything. Kinda depressing actually.

This show will probably take characters from any aspect of the TMNT universe. It could very well have classic 80's characters like Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady while also having Karai, Hun, Triceratons and other characters.
Nick can take villains from any TMNT universe. They could bring back Lord Dregg if they wanted.

Armaggon would be flippin' awesome. I think the way they'll handle things in the new show depends on how much knowledge of the various different TMNT universes the writers for the show will know. One thing that made Tranformers Animated so awesome was that the people involved were hardcore Transformers fans, so let's hope the same thing will happen for this 2012 TMNT cartoon.

Let's make things clear here!
2k3 and it's characters played a big price for Nick! They own 2k3! $10 mil went to 4kids! You really thing Nick will just Ditch such a successful cartoon! They can air their new show, while still airing 2k3! Maybe we get lucky enought and they will buy license from Fred Wolf films and we get OT on Nick at Nite, I heard there is a crazy fan in Viacom so be ready for enything! And as comics go, Nick allowed Mirage to publish 8 comics per year if they wish to (of course it will have to be censored :oh well:), TMNT will rise again!

Here's my concern... do we REALLY want to see a pallid imitation of the old series? No, I love the old series, don't get me wrong. But how are we gonna know they aren't just rehashing old plotlines and basically repeating the old show with a false sense of nostlgia? Are they going to attempt to get all the old writers in there, or are we going to get a bunch of people with bad handles on the characters, other than the utterance of old catchphrases?
IF and only if they get the original writers, or someone who has the skill to write in the style of the old series, it will work. If we get a crummy CGI show with people trying to rewrite old episodes. turning it into a Jimmy Neutron looking parody, I just don't wanna bother.
And frankly, what's wrong with seeing something new? I don't want to see a pallid imitation of the 1980's series anymore than I want to see a pallid imitation of 2k3. I mean, those shows I already have seen. We've already seen. There were so many different types of TMNT in the original comics based on all the different writers and artists that worked on it. Does it have to clone any influences from something we've already seen?

Me too. See, you can still have Bebop and Rocksteady and all those other guys... but you can also have characters with more depth than "We're fighting you because no one's buying our action figures." I love the OT and all, but what they did with Wingnut and Screwloose was a crime, as opposed to Archie's interpretation.
Really... aliens that want to brainwash humans... that was original.
Here is what I would like out of the new show.
1. Good comedy like the old toon, that actually holds up well to this very day.
2. Good action like the 2K3 cartoon, with fluid animation during the fights (more FPS like in some 2K3 episodes.)
3. Characters from Mirage comics.
4. Characters from the 2K3 universe (Bishop please.)
5. Characters from the old toon.
6. Characters from the Archie series (Armaggon, Cudley, Mutanimals.)
7. CG at least as good as Penguins of Madagascar or SW: Clone Wars.
8. For it to last as long as some of Nick's properties (Spongebob.)
Mix all of that up, and you could really have a kick-ass show.

True, I think the OT turtles has a bigger following then you think though. You walk into those shops like Hot Topic and Spencer's and OT turtles stuff is everywhere, and has been for years now. It's selling very well and I have trouble getting some of the stuff I want sometimes. Can't say the re-release of the toy went over super well though. Seriously just think of the quality of the current shows out. Even the ones aimed towards kids. Batman Brave and the Bold and Super Hero Squad are two great examples. ok. I'm still very confused on WTH is supposed to be going on. Laird sold all his rights to the his property, and everything turtles that was, is, and will be are now entirely in Nick's control. That I understand. (my reaction to this is sadness mingled with cautious optimism)
However I'm still a little unclear on what exactly is happening with a Nick tooned version of the turtles that wants to "focus" on the 80's toon. Does this mean that this will be another cartoon medium entirely that's just takes it's tone ofthe classic 80's toon with rehashed versions of some OT characters? Or is this a complete revival of the actual 80's toon that we all know and love with a slightly modernized tone and look, and the same characters with maybe darker tone to it and with CGI animation?
I'm not sure I'm really ready for a "new" take of the ninja turtles cartoon, if they are going to concentrate on the 80's cartoon, I would rather it just be a revival/continuation of the old show with maybe a more serious twist on it.
I actually think a ninja turtles cartoon can survive and handled respectably on Nickelodeon since they have Wolverine and the X-Men and the Fantastic Four on Nick and they are both really good shows and the animation is pretty good as well. Also Avatar was a great series in the vien of marticial arts and did quite well. So these shows give me hope. But I'm with the camp of this need to be traditional animation rather CGI. I hate CGI. I think it looks ugly and plastic looking even in high quality disney/pixar versions. And Often CGI shows look to much like computer game graphics for my liking. So I really hope we can get tradational animation instead of all CGI.
Question, if this actually turns out the be an actual revival of the classic toon, would you want Cam, Rob, Barry, Townsend, Renee, James, and Pat to voice their respective characters again? Would that be even possiable?
It won't be exactly like the OT, audiences have changed, it'll definitely have tons of elements from the NT but modernized, so it'll basically be a mix between the OT and the NT, it has the potential to be awesome.

The 2k3 cartoon is still on the air and is the version most familiar with kids right now, there will not be a six year blackout between cartoons like the OT and 2k3.
And as of now, the only TMNT cartoon that Nick has the rights to is the new toon, and after paying 60 million for the property, they will probably throw the cartoon into heavy rotation with their other cartoons, like Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents. Just because they say they will "focus on the 80s toon turtles" doesn't mean they won't use characters/storys from other parts of TMNT, why wouldn't they? Kids don't care about the integrity of the individual turtleverses, and certainly not the suits that now run TMNT.

'Cause Will Vinton made 'em, and Vinton made the Raisins claymations.
And we'll likely see some previews of the new show before it airs.
Does Nick do that kinda stuff?

The new show isn't due until 2012, we're going to wait for a long time before we hear anything.
Which is really my point. That's nine years from the start of 2k3... even if a 10 year old started off watching 2k3, they'd be 19 by the time the Nickelodeon thing rolls around. 19 year olds aren't even on the radar when network$ plan their toons.
If anything ends up in there from the 2k3 cartoon, it'll be cherry picked but I can absolutely, positively promise you it will be a complete reboot. It'll either 1) Be a completely new universe that mostly just resembles the Fred Wolf cartoon, or 2) Be ambiguously a continuation of the Fred Wolf cartoon universe. I'm honestly not sure which way I think it will lean. I think the former, but I have nothing to base it on.

I'm pretty sure there were 10 year olds watching the ninja turtles after the year 2003 and even 10 year olds watching them now.

I automatically assumed everything would be a reboot, as a new animated turtle universe.

Obviously not enough to sustain the show.

Chances are slim and none that it'll be anything but that. Making it a continuation of anything would put too much pressure on the writers to familliarize themselves with a continuity so as not to contradict it. An hommage like Superman Returns or even TMNT? I could see that, but wouldn't count on it.

It lasted seven seasons with over 150 episodes, first CyberCubed now you, yeesh.

Yeah, agreed on that. It may not have been the phenomenon that the old cartoon was, but it definitely had a good run.
I think by today's standards, the New Toon dominated. 7 years is a long time, especially when you remember the first episode by a huge margin.

My only point is that however successful it may have been to start with, the run tapered off. The interest waned, the ratings dropped and it was cancelled. Folks outgrew it, same as they did the original cartoon.
It's not rocket science, folks.
It's not even science. Nor religion or language.
It's just entertainment.

Seriously just think of the quality of the current shows out. Even the ones aimed towards kids. Batman Brave and the Bold and Super Hero Squad are two great examples. If they go back to the 80s characters but give it a more updated tone I think it will do well. These are characters that seem to break through generational gaps and won't go away for a long time. Hopefully not in my life time. :D
I have yet to see Super Hero Squad, but I think Brave and the Bold is an example that needs to be brought up. The show didn't try to follow Batman Begins and The Dark Knight as slavishly, almost harkening back to the 1960's and 70's Filmation series. But we still have Batman being a dark figure, and the writing is actually deep (at least deeper than that Filmation stuff). I could see that very well being the case. Something similar to the style and quality of the 80's series, but with deeper writing.
Or, they could just completely play the comedy factor and have them fighting giant stalks of broccoli for an audience of 5 year olds... I'm, frankly, terrified by that possibility.

While I've never seen and entire episode of "Brave and the Bold", the Hardcore DC fans that I know LOVE this show. And while I know that's only anecdotal at best, it does lend the show a whole lot of credibility from where I'm standing.

No one disputes that, although 2k3 wasn't cancelled due to low ratings, neither Mirage or 4Kids wanted to pay for anymore new episodes, but I don't see how that translate into Nick burying all aspects of the 2k3 show or any other non 80s OT TMNT.
Now if you mean this new CG cartoon will not be a continuation of the 2k3 continuity (which is what I think you're saying), then you would be right, I believe it will be a brand new TMNT universe.

You forgot Playmates. Remember, they have a hand in the franchise too. And they basically folded any interest in it for that movie Christian Bale blew up while filming (and frankly, I don;t think anyone blames him at this point). Epic fail for not making a talking Christian Bale action figure with real freak out action. Sure, I'd dig through the endless piles of unsold Terminator Salivation at Marshalls for one of thems.

I just want someone to go all the way back and see where the CGI stuff came in. Personally, I don't give a crap what continuity it has, if it looks like Jimmy Neutron (and I like Jimmy Neutron) I'm not gonna be pleased one bit. I don't see what's wrong with 2-D non-flash animation.

Again, I feel like this is the sticking point with me. I really hope the CGI thing doesn't pan out, because looking at the crap CG Nick has done, I really have no interest. Especially after Machi reminded me the other night that they do that awful Barnyard show, as well.
I really hope someone comes to their senses, but I honestly don't see that happening.

Oh I didn't forget about them, them pulling out is what caused the need for 4Kids and Mirage to pony up extra money for the show, but whenever asked about the future of the show, Both Mirage and 4Kids tended to point toward the other as to who would decide the future of the show, which usually means a financial impasse.

I think Barnyard and Jimmy Neutron were produced be the same production company, O Entertainment.
It may be a possibility they hand off the project to Dreamworks Animation (which is owned by Paramount/Viacom).

I don't see what's wrong with 2D either. Cost wise and making wise I see why they want to go with the 3D route, but I don't have high hopes for that. Mainly because I'm half afraid the designs will somehow take a nosedive and come off looking something like this. (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c244/oneigekko/uncanny_homer.jpg) I'm pretty sure it won't, but I'm still afraid of that.
That and every time I think of Nickelodeon and it's 3D shows, I just keep thinking of fart jokes and zanny adventures that run around for fifteen minutes before it ends. Kinda like letting go of a blown up balloon and watching it fly around until there is no air left.
I don't mind seeing TMNT take a new direction after the movie and the 2k3 cartoon, but if it means going in that direction...

About the whole CG thing, I don't think I'd mind it too much if that means motion capture for fight scenes like in that old CG pilot thingie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWQweoA27Hg).

I think the only concern about CGI is handling action sequences. TV budget CGI just isn't the best medium for hand-to-hand combat. Sure, it works well enough if you've got the laser blasts flying like Beast Wars or Star Wars, but with Turtles? Eh.
And that old CGI pitch looks like sh*t. Always has.
