Warm or cold blooded?

So whose in the mood for a NICE debate?

I was watching a program about Dinosaurs on Discovery and the debate about them being warm or cold blooded came up. So these sciencey people, whith a lack of dinosaurs to catch, went out and caught a logger head turtle. The checked its metabolic rate and found that it was on the border line between warm and cold blooied.

Your thoughts?

Hmmm....I thought all reptiles were cold-blooded? There are probably a few exceptions.

Are you asking if we think Dinosaurs were cold or warm blooded, or the Turtles? I will assume the Turtles since we're in that forum.

I always thought they were on the border between warm and cold blooded. Obviously their body temperature is not totally dependent on their environment, but not totally stable either. Definitely lower than average human temperature.

I've gotta agree. I've always figured that body temperature was one of the aspects that were affected by the mutation, making them warm-blooded, but not fully. Kind of like how their appearance changed, but they have both human and turtle characteristics in their looks.

The guys are probly something like "lukewarm"-blooded. I know that i can feel sluggish in heat and feisty in cold, and sometimes its the other way around...

They can probly stand extreme temperatures to a certain point, and then it would start to affect them.

Ooo...ooo..!! Good debate question! On the average, I also considered most reptiles as being 'cold-blooded'... generally not being able to maintan thier own body temperature.
Of course, I imagine a Ninja Turtle is also lukewarm-blooded after the mutation.

I've also seen a few shows on PBS about reptiles and dinos... as well as read what Crichton concluded in the Jurassic Park book.

In summary: size makes a difference! I remeber it being stated that for a big dino to be able to maintain his temperature, he would have to be warmblooded to a certain degree. And so they compared many of the dinos to that of birds. One thing there, is that many birds have a very high metabolism... while the dinos would have to had lower metaobolism so they didn't burn up all their energy needed to move their big bodies around. :smile:

I read everything in Jurassic Park and saw all those dino specials too, but i also base it on my own lukewarm-bloodedness. I also own "Walking with Dinosaurs". Good to see my 'relatives' back in action. :grin:

I look at All sorts of stuff on theropods, especially the meateaters! One (or two) books i really like are called dinotopia. The art is incredible, and i LOVE Stinktooth the Giganotosaurus! :grin:

Actually, i have a newspaper article about someone discovering a dinosaur heart and finding that it was four-chambered and hot-blooded. I got TONS of tuff on Dinosaurs!

I've always sorta wanted to be a paleonthologist, archeologist, or anything that involves discovering stuff in the dirt. Too bad it isn't really as exciting as Indiana Jones or Jurasic Park.

Heh....there's always a possibility for that. Take a look at cloning, for example. No one had any idea such a process could be done, but someone found a way. Sometimes science scares me :sad:

Some things sci-f do ,ake it to reality, while others still remain undone. It hink the reason why they went ahead with cloning was due to many more reasons on why it could be a benefit. (o course, I'm not all for cloning though... being the religious nut that I am)

I bet as soon as they found a medical benefit for human/animal hybrids, they'll prolly make it happen! :razz:

Yeah.. after reading Su Stitler's fic, I started to wonder if the Turtles really did have to niberante in the winter. (I doubt Eastman &amp; Laird thought much on that detail)

I guess I was right in guessing that JP 1 did better in the States. I'm kind of surprised at JP 3's world wide gross. I haven't seen the movie yet, but a lot of people have told me it's better than the second but not as good as the first.

It seemd to me that the book was split up through out all three movies.

In the second movie where the Rapors, my personal favorites climb up the tree is in the book. In the Third movie where they go through the aviary was also in the book.

Yeah, they have stuff from the jurassic, triassic, and the cretaceous eras. They have five islands total, cuz i heard that there's to be five movies total. My long story is about the branch they have in the dark forests of new england.

In the book didn't they nuke the islands at the end? I also remember some small dinosaurs escaping and eating babies. Of course I could be dreaming.

I swear in one of the books that happens, and also a group of raptors escaped to some other island and ate soybeans for lysine. If anyone doeesnt understand the lysine thing, i can explain.

The dinos in the park are genetically engineered to be lysine deficient, or unable to manufacture the amino acid. Without it, the dino cant manufacture protein. It is also essential for skeletal (bone) development, and helps the body absorb calcium.
so no lysine, no good!

Yep, it was the first book that had the napalm at the end and the lysine defienct dinos, that were smart enough to figure out how to get around that. I prefer how the first book was over the movie for many of those reasons.

Didn't like the third movie, cause it was too short and seemed to fill in the gaps that was overlooked from the first and second book. Anyone else like this last one?

I hear ya, SC! I remember reading from Laird's "Blast From The Past" that there were a lot of edited/deleted scenes from the first movie. I wish they'd release a limited edition DVD packed with those scnes and other special features for all three movies. Oh! Maybe a boxed set! The TMNT trilogy! Man, I'd shell out some extra cash for something like that...:grin:

Over here in England they cut the first movie to pieces. The great 'fellow chucker' scene is completely missing! In the third movie at the beggining were they all do their stuff with their weapons, Michaealngelo's bit is cut out! Makes me gald that my VCR has NTSC playback.

Why does my country feel that the chucks are more violent and deadly then say, two very sharp katana or a pair of sai? Hmmmmmm The mind boggles.
