View Full Version : Mezcaal and Umeko

I was wondering if anyone could confirm if Mezcaal has any relationship to Umeko/Ninjara? I read on a forum somewhere that she does, but the comics didn't seem to back that up. Just that her grandmother was spiritual, just not a name and Raph didn't seem to give any indication he knew who it was.
Thanks in advance for any info.

I thought I read somewhere that mezcaal was Ninjaras daughter or something but I haven't read past like issue 32 of archie so I have no idea.

No no no. Mezcaal is, I believe, Ninjara's GRAND-Daughter.
I forget where I read that though...
Pretty kinky sh!t if you ask me... :tlol:
Edit: And, if you think about it, it makes perfect sense since animals in the canine family don't live all that long. If the Turtles are like 100 in the Cyber Samurai mini-series, and Ninjara had HER daughter shortly after TMNT #70...well, you do the math.

So Raph dated Ninjara and then dates her granddaughter in the future?

I don't remember where I read that...but I remember reading it.
I mean, have you noticed her resemblance to Mokoshan too?
It isn't like he was around when she was a kid...he met her after she'd become an adult. So it isn't THAT weird.

Well, in Ninjara-comics, which appeared in Furrlough, she had a daughter named Moka and Mokoshan was killed. I can't remember seeing mention of Mezcaal being related to Ninjara, but then again, I haven't read all adventures in english, part only in finnish.
It is possible for her to be daughter or even granddaughter of Moka, which would make her either granddaughter or greatgranddaughter of Ninjara. If anyone can tell me where this was mentioned in comics, and maybe a scan of that particular happening, I'd appreciate it.

I thought I read it in something Dan or Murph posted somewhere. I could be wrong though.
Verification would be nice, but until we have proof otherwise she's Ninjara's grand-daughter as far as I'm concerned.

I read that too, I also read that names in that clan were taken after parents as well. Or at least, the father.

Can we get in touch with either one of them to find out for sure?
But neither Archie comics or Furlough confirmed blood relations.

Dan's easy to get ahold of, and I know some people here hold contact with Murphy, so I'm sure we'll find out eventually.

Explain?
Like I said, if he didn't meet her until she had grown up/established herself as a mature adult, there's not really anything creepy about it. Let's not make Raphael into Woody Allen.

For instace, I'd have trouble getting close to a girl who had previously dated a friend of mine. I would never be with someone who had previously dated a family member of mine, especially not my grandfather.

I'll have to go back and check my Archie books to see if it's actually noted as such there. IIRC, 62 had a mention of her grandmother...
I was seriously thinking Murph had clarified Mezcaal's relation to Ninjara on his blog a few years back.

Win.
So Raph being into furries isn't weird, but dating his ex-girlfriend's granddaughter is? That the rule now?
None of it's weird, it's a comic book. I always thought it made Raph a little more deep, like subconsciously he was trying to recapture with Mez what he screwed up with Ninjara. Never bothered me.

Never thought of it that way. But Raph is sort of the "Emo," archetypal Lord Byron type...

Yes, it's in Future Tense, although, she just says "my grandmother". Not a name and neither does Raph. I said that in my initial post.

In #61, we find out that Noboku (one of Future Leo's students) is APRIL'S Great-granddaughter, maybe that's where you are getting that.
Also, I'm almost sure Mezcaal is a wolf humanoid, not a fox. If you compare the drawings, she has a wider muzzle than Ninjara had. Also, her tail is much shorter and less full/fluffy.
But if anyone knows if Murphy clarified Mez/Ninjara's relationship on his blog, PLEASE prove me wrong. :)

Well, here it is, direct from the horse's mouth:
Hi Mica. You're going to hate this but... I don't exactly remember. I don't think they're related though as Ninjara was a fox and Mezcaal a coyote and I seem to remember toying with the idea that Raph was into canine girls. ;o) Which would make me think that the two women were NOT related. It would be too weird if they were.
Hope all is well,
Steve

Okay, I was wrong. Mez is a coyote, not a wolf. Only certain breeds of canines can interbreed, so we know that Mez isn't decended from Ninjara.
I did a little research, and any kids between Mokoshan and Ninjara would be doxes (Dog/Wolf-Fox hybrids) and it's never been confirmed that that combo is viable/fertile. (but I guess it is in TMNTA world, since I think Ninjara has a kid in Furrlough issue with her in it, however, whether that kid is fertile or not, who knows)
It WOULD be too weird if Ninjara was Mezcaal's ancestor. Rather twisted.

Mezcaal is a Cayote?! Well I suppose that would explain the whole Turtle Island thing. I thought Raph created the Turtle Island restauraunt cuz of the Native American guy telling him the story. But he also married a Native American mutant! Mezcaal being named after a type of cactus makes more sense now....
Ironically Rob Paulsen voiced the descendant of Road Runner in Loonatics Unleashed....

Hold up. Despite the coyote being a trickster god in some Native American cultures, I don't see the connection. Being a coyote doesn't automatically make her associated with being a "Native American mutant". Heck, is she even a mutant at all?
Unless there's some subtext in the actual issues themselves that I'm not aware of....

I like to consider those "stylistic choices" rather than misspellings.

Well, than the guys at Mirage are rich of mind indeed, there are more spelling errors in the early stuff than can easily be counted. I found a few that really annoyed me in one of the more recent issues of Tales as well.

Yes... and it's made out of the plant Maguey (a type of Agave plant aka Century Plant. Maguey is just another word for Mezcal).
To me it just continues the theme of the turtles falling for females named after plants:
Mezcaal/Mezcal (Maguey/Century Plant)
Umeko (plum blossom)
Lotus Blossom
Kala (Lilly)
Hazel/Radical (Hazelnuts anyone? )
Karai (a plum tree)
Mona Lisa (a type of Tulip)

Agreed. Them being related doesn't bother me so much as the idea of Raph constantly looking to replace "the one that got away." No matter how "fitting" that is to his character, it's still really pathetic.

I always thought that since Raph outlived Ninjara and possibly never reconciled with her, that years later when he met Mezcaal she was so much like Ninjara that he was attracted to her. Never thought it was gross at all.
Oh well, too bad we fabricated the whole thing in our minds. It was a pretty awesome concept.

I am fairly certain that they are... I think if you read the summaries on the offical site, it says so. I'll go check.
"Dreamland" Part One
The five part "Dreamland" story takes place in the future and features the future versions of the TMNT in their Cyber Samurai gear.
Verminator X hacks into the Hubble Space Telescope and spots an alien ship heading towards Earth...
On the surface of the planet (which is flooded due to global warming), Raph wakes from a nightmare and is consoled by his wife (I think), Mezcaal (who looks alot like Raph's former girlfriend, Ninjara).
So it is never stated but merely implied...
