View Full Version : Where did the turtles get their stuff? And the money for pizza?

These are the questions I find myself asking as I re-watch the original cartoon. My guess on all their stuff is that its been taken from some dumpster and fixed up by Donatello, although how they're finding weapons, books in good condition and most of their stuff is still weird.

And where do they get all the money to buy all those pizzas? Were these questions ever answered in the comics or other medium?

None of these questions really matter since they don't spoil the show at all, but its funny how as a kid you never think twice about these things and then as a adult they kind of make you smile at how the little details didn't matter back then.

There is nothing wrong with that. Besides Calvin and Hobbes is the cats pajamas.

Change happens--I change my signature many times as well. Gotta love the ninja turtles bio.

anyways, to stay with this thread--though already mentioned somewhere else, i can only imagine the turtles got their money from the sewers themselves; after all, money can fall down a sewer.

Oh well I tried.

I can only imagine that April gives them money.

Must be TMNT's biggest plothole ever. Maybe Donatello has a machine that can create false money that look so real that police or government may know they're false. But he would probably give April and Irma some money too, so they shouldn't need to work.

There is somewhere at Drome a nice draw-comic where you can see Raphael disguised as a beggar asking for a few coins... or maybe they use to steal ninja style some for eat ...

Maybe they take money from the criminals they stop, or they could be underground pizza smugglers. The possibilities are endless.

You have both given me big laughs there. I DO wonder that kind of stuff though. I think I fixed the problem in my stories by having Raph doing lots of shady deals. "Where'd you think I was getting my money? A paper route?"

Maybe the TMNT are like, prized fighters in some kind of underground fighting circuit, kinda like the UFC but illegal; Where all the super freaks go to.
They could totally place big bets on eachother.

wat exactly do they buy... they live in a sewer..i always assumed theyobtained their things from the dump or garbage...as far as food... my guess would be they trade things in to pawn shops that they may find...

Maybe Hamato Yoshi's friends, relatives or Foot Clan members who always believe in him even if he was dishonoured in Japan send money to him (in versions where Hamato Yoshi is still Splinter).

Back then at age 13, I thought they did odd jobs while in disguise.

Nowadays I think they mainly find things. They may pawn some- Donatello can come up with all the necessary info to do this. Hamato Yoshi may have left money behind.

^Hamato Yoshi doesn't have any money. That's why he ended up living in the sewer (pilot episode).

They're robbers, think about it. They wonder around night time with coats and hats hiding their identity, they show the innocent side on the show but they actually rob stores and people. They could also sell weed, I mean they have to atleast be smoking it, no one eats that much pizza just because. There are a lot of dark conspiracy theories surrounding these green little dudes.

Also Splinter could be some sort of mafia boss, but lives in a sewer for his underground hideout.

Again the possibilities are endless.

I like the idea of the pawnshop. That actually makes a lot of sense and adds credibility to how they are getting their stuff from a dumpster or someplace like that.

Since I started the thread to discuss the original series its impossible that they would be doing anything shady to get their money.

Haha, I know they don't do anything shady I'm just poking fun. It's an unsolvable mystery.

I think the pawn shop idea is definitely the best. It makes a lot of sense, especially when you think about Donatello's experiments. He had to get the hardware from someplace. If they were hanging out at junkyards anyway, they mind as well cash anything they wouldn't use themselves.

Ooooh, oopsy doodles.

But who would want to say no to a giant mutant ninja turtle (with weapons) walking into your pizza shop? ^^
OH! And the first episode they walked out before they even got billed.

Here is the most plausable idea
1.Collect thrown out junk. (Cans, bottles, Money, ect..)
2. Recycle cans, bottles= money.
3.Garbage yard collecting thrown out or broken appliances.
4. Don fixes broken appliances and either keep them or sell them for more money.
5. Metal salvaging= more money.
6. Donny can hack anything such as cable, internet, or phone.

Seriosly its not that big of a plot hole this is all plausable.

No, the ninja behind the cash register throws a knife at their table with the bill on it, but we didn't actually see them pay.:twink:

Yeah, I feel like this could probably be explained easily enough by A) salvaging, B) gathering money in the sewers, and C) occasionally taking money from whatever bad guys they bust. You knock over a money laundering operation just once, and you'd be set. That wouldn't be the type of thing they'd need to leave as evidence for the police, either.

Maybe Donatello has invented a teleporter or uses the dimensinal portal for Earth travels (like in the Groundchuck and Dirtbag episode or something) to travel right into bank vaults (wearing their trenchcoats), and steal all money and easy escape back. :)

I'd say this sums it up pretty well.... I mean there are many homeless ppl out there that somehow manage to eat... I still would call this a plot hole and it is kind of weird that it's never even been briefly touched on.

Many homeless people carry out minor crimes, like stealing, to get money, or get food from friends, or the Salvation Army's charity.

Looked into this a little the other day and in the OT there was an ep that the turtles split up and they all got jobs... Donnie had a fix it shop, leo ran a gym, raph delivered singing "turtle"grams...and mike had a cooking show on tv.

I was thinking more of Hamato Yoshi in the NT. After all, this question applies to every universe.

No matter how plausible the explanations we come up with are, this is still a plot hole- regardless of universe. It should have been developed more.

It applies to OT look at the thread creator comment. He implies the ot and even says OT.

2. Recycle cans, bottles= money.

That's actually one of those "Turtle Tip" PSAs; Donatello recommends getting money from recycling. So yeah, definitely plausible! :)

It's fun to discuss plotholes like this, but I have to admit, I'm also reminded of the theme song from "Mystery Science Theater 3000" if you know what I mean. ; )

This is what makes the most sense to me, except the "selling appliances for money" thing, how would they be able to sell stuff? They're mutants, they can't just start a business or contact with different humans every single day, the police would've gotten them by now.

I'd say April gives them some kind of allowance every month, she's the top reporter of Channel 6, she must have a decent income.

There are times they cooked their own pizzas. Mikey especially.

But yeah, plot hole on their income is huge. Then again they're well known in their universe, and there's a couple of times they won contests from costume parties.
