Plus I am assuming the guys are like 15/16 in the new show and even if someone wants to make an argument a certain character has pacifist tendency it would be far more likely these would develop as they got older anyway.

Well in the comics the guys aged over time and I personally felt any pacifist tendencies Don had grew with him as he aged.

In the beginning all the guys were all kinda about kicking butt. :twink:

I've always felt that the Turtles should be adept at using weapons other than their preferenced ones (which is why I thought that "trade weapons" part of "What a Croc" was really cool), so to see them using similar-but-different weapons is fine with me. And besides, Mike has already used tonfa and a grappling line regular in previous incarnations. What's one more notch on his belt?

My only fear, as I addressed in another thread, is that if they give the Turtles with bludgeoning weapons bladed weapons, and they only end up fighting human oponents... All they'll ever be able to do is "cut down conveniently placed chandeliers" (the 4Kids series was surpringly lax in letting Mike and Don thwak their foes with their weapons).

So I hope they fight a lotta robots and actually get to use the sharp parts of their weapons to do something other than deflect lasers and cut rope.

Yeah, that would be pretty awful. "The TMNT all have awesome weapons and now... watch as they... don't use them." If we go back to Krang and Bebop and all of that with armadas of robot Foot Soldiers and maybe Rock Soldiers, maybe not a problem. Sounds like that's probably the case.

I can see what Reira is saying, how traits grow with age, and there is no doubt the early Turtles were very much about kicking butt. But even in the early series Donatello exhibits many pacifist tendencies. As early as issue #2 he is taking the back seat with fighting in favor of his computer skills (it is only Leo, Mike, and Raph who fight the mousers) and his one-shot shows him to be extremely sensitive. I always liked that Donny didn't have a blade...he used the simplest of weapons while being the most complex Turtle, at least in my opinion.

I guess I'm just anal, but I prefer Donny to stick with his plain old bo staff without a blade. However, I will also say I'm looking forward to seeing what Nick has up their sleeves...

I guess I really won't know what my feelings are on the use of other weapons or the addition of blades to existing weapons until I completely understand the reasoning behind it. In the comics they would use different weapons here and there, but nothing really overshadowed the original weapons they were given.

I'll certainly check the show out. I'm hoping by the time it's done, it'll have a "grittier" feel than the previous incarnations. I just bought a copy of RAPHAEL #1 (for six bucks! Cheap!) and my love of the old black-and-white stuff was rekindled. Hopefully the new show will have at least a little of that sensibility to it.

TNM was said to be "more xtreme" or something along those lines but that was referring to 90s XTREEEEME and it mostly delivered that, motorcycles, over the top designs etc and even if it was pretty silly at times you can argue it took itself more seriously than the OT, at in the way that they weren't self aware.

2k3 was a much grittier version, of course you weren't going to have the gritty version you want but come on are you actually telling it wasn't a grittier reboot than the OT? You have to remember the cartoons target audience is and will always be in the west.

TMNT 2007 had a pretty dark teaser trailer but even then we had mikey joking around. And we were only promised in "its going to be PG but borderline PG-13" so yeah it wasn't as dark as the 2k3 show but definitely darker than say the previous movies and at least as dark as the first one. Not saying the first movie is particularly dark but it wasn't like the OT.

Now for the new show we haven't been promised anything, everyone assumed it'd be more like the OT but everything we've seen so far makes it feel closer to 2k3 and 2k7 in terms of mood.

The new movie was indeed promised to be based more on the comics but that was before the buy out, I really expect the new movie to be PG-13 and the closest thing outside of comics that may appeal to you. Your version of the turtles is never going to happen outside of comics, I'd love to see it but I don't mind if it doesn't happen either.


For a more on topic comment, I actually think its pretty stupid that they have "oh look its not just a bo but a bladed bo!", but I'll take it, who knows maybe they do make it work and its not just "look how new and improved we are its now bladed".

I think its stupid. In pretty much every adaption, whenever they aren't fighting robots (which is often I'll admit but still), Leo and Raph and always restricted to smacking people with the hilts of their weapons. Because you can't show people getting run through and stabbed up in cartoons. Oh woopdy doo Leo decapitated Shredder in 2k3. Except he really didn't.

Also isn't it easy to hurt yourself with regular nunchucks? What sense does it make to add blades to them? In every continuity Mikey accidentally smacks himself with his chucks at least once. If he does it this time he'll slice his skull open. Adding blades to a bo staff is stupid because, to me, it messes up the brilliant simplicity of the weapon. Pffft.

He was extremely confident that it wouldn't work. Don doing something risky to test a theory definitely feels like Don (and note, this being in the Image universe also makes it a bit more on shaky ground as if it's an accurate representation of his character, although I think it fits).

Eh I don't think slapping blades onto something makes it more intimidating. I've always been impressed by Mikey and Don's abilities to use their weapons as is. They're still perfectly capable of dealing just as much damage as Raph and Leo just in a different way. I would assume a mutant walking talking turtle is intimidating automatically anyways. At least in every case outside of OT.
