How many of you feel that nickelodeon cartoon is going to push the envelope like the 4Kids cartoon.

Not in the same way but yes, look at a show like Teen Titans, it was goofy fun but it could also get pretty dark when it had to, same with Avatar: TLA a Nick cartoon. Every decade cartoons have gotten "smarter" and less kiddy for the most part, compare shows from the 80s with the 90s and 00's and for the most part writing has gotten better and atttitudes have relaxed on what is allowed for a kid to watch.

They could but I wouldn't take it too seriously. I honestly don't think I'll give the show a chance if the recent artwork pictures from earlier are an indication as to the style this show is taking. I don't like watching things that are not of quality to me. It's like imagining a darker Pee Wee Herman. It's possible, but would you take it seriously? Would you care to watch Pee Wee style, darker?

Anyway, to answer your question; It's possible that Nick could set a dark tone and push boundaries, but it's also possible that they won't. Time will tell.

Darn right. I'm just going to be optimistic and say yes. From what we've seen, we know that Nick is not oblivious, and that at first the new show is going to be watched by us older fans. It will take some time to catch on to the little ones. We're what they need to get this show off the ground. By what Nick has done for fans already, I really don't think we have to worry, too much...plus, we're getting IDW, so even if Nick takes a total "light" approach, we will still have figures, new comics, and empty wallets. So no big deal.

Who in the hell voted yes? There's no way it could be as dark as it was in 2K3. I wish that were true but i know it wont be. This is going to be as soft as Fast Forward or BTTS was.

I don't care if all 4 have blades now, i just don't see it happening. No chance.

I voted yes mainly because Toon saying that its based on the Eastman and Laird issues. I am hoping the models change tho as they are to bright for my tastes. If it were to look more like the art work that has been shown recently and presented in a darker tone I'd say yes it could be as dark.

Although I can see it not possibly not being as dark. I mean look at Same as it never was when they killed the turtles and shredder (with exception to don). Beheading the shredder etc.

I hope they make this show better than the 2k3 show but I think that will be a tall order if its as good I will be happy, I also hope its gritty.

I voted yes mainly because Toon saying that its based on the Eastman and Laird issues.

They said they used it for inspiration. My guess is vague storylines/characters. Remember, even the 80s toon was based on E/L stuff. Thinking that this is really going to resemble the E/L stuff much more than the 80s toon is going to be stretching it. My personal prediction is it'll be a little less wacky than the 80s toon, but nowhere near as serious as the 2k3 stuff. Somewhere in the middle.

yes, and no. I think and hope Nickelodeon's take on the turtles will be a varied one, focusing on good story telling.

The turtles were dark first & foremost, Sergio...

Sounds like you're trying to "inform" me, but I know that. Not sure what made you say that to me. Comic-wise, they were dark, The '80's TMNT cartoon and Archie Comics were not dark. The TMNT live action trilogy wasn't really dark, although the first movie was the darkest of the three. The Next Mutation garbage wasn't dark, it was goofy beyond belief. The 2K3 cartoon went back to a darker tone.

All I'm saying is that the new show from Nick could be dark or not. If it's dark, the concept art shown contrasts with the dark atmosphere I would like. I don't want to see a dark show with characters that don't look serious. Whacky distortions of characters that look kid-friendly don't fit for a dark show. That's my opinion. Maybe I cleared something up, maybe I didn't.

Pee Wee started dark/adult as well, in fact some of that humor made its way to Pee Wee's playhouse. That actually made the show enjoyable re-watching it and he also had a "darker"/adult broadway show/HBO special recently.

I'm hoping so too. I'm not turning my back on this show as it is too early to do so. However, right now, I'm not too thrilled.

Note: I accidentally double posted so I'm adding the following to this post.

This did.

The turtles started dark, so I can't see why you find it hard to imagine them dark, or take them seriously as such...

LOL! You misunderstood me friend. I'm not against the turtles being dark. Let me clarify myself to avoid confusion.

I love the TMNT. I grew up watching the '80's cartoon and as a kid it was an awesome cartoon. When the next mutation came around, I looked at it with disgust because the TMNT got raped here. I loved the live action trilogy. I like the TMNT to be dark. When the 2K3 serious came around, I was hesitant to watch it because the TMNT looked too fat and it wasn't what I grew up knowing. After a while, it grew on me and realized this was what I wanted from a TMNT show. The 2K3 show was a far more serious, darker toned show. I really enjoyed that.

What I'm saying about the Nick TMNT is that the current artwork looks kid-ish and unsuitable to follow a dark path. The Pee Wee reference was just stating that Pee Wee is not a dark character and seeing him in a dark show totally makes Pee Wee not fit in. That's the point I'm getting at with the current TMNT artwork from Nick.

I know it's early art and all that. Right now I'm not impressed or excited because it does not look like the direction I'm used to. I like serious cartoons like the 2K3 series. Things like X-Men TAS, Spider-Man TAS, Batman TAS, etc appeal to me. I don't want the new TMNT show to fall below my standards. For me, everything has to be perfect in order to enjoy it. Art style, setting, tone, etc. If it's a dark show with turtles that don't seem tough, then I'm not gonna feel it.

To further illustrate my point, picture the Batman from Brave in the Bold and insert him into Batman the Animated Series (Pre-WB). He totally would look out of place and not serious enough to fit in that show's style. I hope I cleared that up.

@Jester, whoa, I had no idea the Archie Comics were dark. Thanks!

2K3 was dark, there's no way this show will be DARKER. I challenge any other future cartoon show to be as dark as 2K3 was for a saturday morning cartoon. There maybe a few that can challenge it but not many. And that's no disrespect to this Nick show, its just that 2K3 really pushed the envelope.

Also I don't think the show will be based of the comics, how can it be? 2K3 was based off the comics pretty much. I mean they aren't going to have the same episodes happen for each series and tell the same stories. I think that's a huge challenge for ANY cartoon show based off comic books. Especially since these two shows aren't that far apart in terms of years.

Look at what happen with 90's X-Men, the next show took a different twist and did Evolution then Wolverine and the X-Men.

However the Spider-Man series really did a good job of taking stories from the book but really making each series different, 90s Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man.

Nick..... the series in which there's no character resolutions in plot, continuous changes in tone, lack of character development, and so on and so forth? If season 3 and 2 were an indication, the darkness is getting stronger with Slash's debut, Vengeance is Mine, The Invasion and several onscreen deaths such as Splinter and Tang Shen. Despite taking risks, I have severe doubts this will occur.

Although the TMNT were a dark franchise in the early days of Mirage, the Nick show just can't make up it's identity on whether it wants to be dark and emotional with some breathers or a show hammering in as much for no apparent reason. It's heavily rushed in storyline progression, especially the Kraang's "defeat" and the Karai arc since her mutation as prime example. Take in account the change of writers from season 1 to later seasons and it's far from crystal clear. I will respect bringing in classic and obscure characters across the franchise, especially to introduce a younger audience to the franchise we all know and love.

Ultimately, I don't feel the show is going to be that dark to compare with 4Kids, the heavily questionable writing from some aspects and the handling of stories often hurt the series. It's not to say a bad TMNT version in the slightest, but the darkness feel shoehorned in at times for my taste and hurts the experience. If some progress can be made before the show's conclusion, then maybe I might change my mind, but at this current time I say no.

No. Too much wacky filler episodes. And even many normal episodes are goofy.Ditto. Plus they don't really build on or develop the characters after one of these dark moments, they are likely there for 'shock value' and even then they don't seem to make them work right. They do them good at first, and then soon after they do something that 'ruins' it. It's things like making Karai's mutation last a little too long, have the turtles and co. seemingly 'forgetting' about the invasion (and their possibly deceased rat master!) while they are in North Hampton, or having Casey be really excited about exploring space, mere minutes after having personally witnessed the Earth (with almost everyone he knew and loved) being destroyed.

I wouldn't say totally that this show won't have moments as dark as the 2k3 show. It's just that when they do have these moments, they tend to make them retroactively suck.

With the question of "Would the nick series go as dark as the 2k3 series" I do say yes.
It's obvious that 4kids wanted to go farther with some of the events and it did push the envelope with some things
and it's obvious that the Nick show also wants to go seriously dark with events too.
But the fact that it is a show aimed at kids is what hurts TMNT the most.

With Kids shows they have to measure things against the standards and practices of what is appropriate and not appropriate to show for kids programming. And while the standards and practices aren't as strict they were years ago, they still are fairly rigged.

Also when you have a 22 minute show, things are cut for time. So some things are left to be implied and others are up to the viewers determination.

With the Death of Splinter, yes that was there for shock value. But Ciro also made a point of saying that these are characters that live by the sword and to *not* show the consequences of that is inappropriate.

Could this show go darker if it had more free reign...yes. Will it be as dark as the 2k3 series...yes...in fact it's already there. Yeah we don't have Shredder getting decapitated, or say Baxter Stockman trying to nail his melting flesh back together. But it is 2k3 level of darkness.

I voted yes because the Kraang taking over NYC (and mutating everyone) was pretty dark, and the Earth being sucked into a black hole by the Triceratons was pretty dark. Can't imagine be seeing 2k12 Bebop and Rocksteady smashing 2k12 Donnie into shell shock, though.

People always say they want a darker/more deep TMNT cartoon or show, but then they back-peddle and state 'Children are needed to support this franchise' (as children wouldn't be able to watch the 'grown-up' TMNT) and thus keeping this show (or any other) from actually being deep or dark.

This show has dark moments, but that's all they are: moments. They don't ever show the consequences of these moments. It's just glossed over and used for shock value.

This show has had moments that are darker than some of the moments in the 2003 series, such as Shredder killing Splinter, but as a show in and of itself with consistency and ramifications of the actions? No. 2003 is still the darkest non-comic book iteration of TMNT.
