We don't need to see the Turtles slicing open fire hydrants where the water sprays on the bad guys, nor do we need the Turtles throwing pizzas at the villains faces.

Also using a bee hive as a weapon just screams "kids stuff."

These are trained ninjas that punch, kick, and use their weapons on their enemies. We want well choreographed fights where the Turtles are pushed to the edges of their limits.

The 4kids series had some great fights in them, try to at least reproduce what you have seen there in this show.

If you recall the movie Three Ninjas... Anything can be used as a weapon... Even CDs, laxatives, and yes a bee hive... It is more about use of the object than what the object actually is... My opinion anyway...

I kind of always thought the point of ninjitsu was that the ninja themselves were the ultimate weapons, and that anything they may use not of their own bodies was to be considered an extension of themselves.

Then again, I'm the kind of person who thinks it's awesome to watch Jason Statham kick a bunch of guys butts using his own button downed shirt.
So your mileage may vary.

Plastroncafe has always been one of my most favourite members here. She is smart, and anything she types is always interesting to read.

On topic...
TMNT has always had different incarnations, different things going for it. It has always turned out into something interesting. Hard to mess up with TMNT because of how versatile it can be. Whether they are beating someone up to a pulp, throwing pizzas into some ones face, or using bee hives as a weapon. Maybe it is just me, but any of those I could watch and be just fine with.

That whole beehive-thing indeed sounds slapstick, but you don't even now how it's gonna look.

BEFORE the beehive-thing there is an actual big fight!

FearlessLeader

Something else you have to keep in mind is they did have sillier fights in the start of 2k3 too.... anyone remember the episode where the Turtles all fought with their extreme sports equipment??

A beehive is actually interesting in a fight with what you have around you type of way.

In the words of the great Master Splinter, "In the hands of a true ninja, anything can be a deadly weapon." Therefore, a beehive can be a weapon if used correctly. And they do have a fight before that anyway according to Rose's blog.

Winnie the Pooh may not have been the most effective ninja, but disguising yourself as a storm cloud to sneak into a beehive is pretty damn inventive.

Historically speaking, Shinboi might've actually tried using a beehive to distract unsuspecting enamies to create an opening for infiltration. The more likely scenario is that they'd just light something important on fire, though. That's if they don't just use disguises to slip past, too, which is even more likely the case.

Either way, it'd certainly be more Shinobi-like to improvise a beehive as a weapon than it would be to jump out shouting and swinging weapons around. Afterall, the biggest principle of the Shinobi was to think outside the box.

Actual fighting would be really entertaining, though, and I'm sure it'll happen. Otherwise why give bladeless Turtles blades?

Yes, make Pooh and Piglet apart of the team. Also Kanga, Roo, and Tigger.

And to add something I forgot, remember in the one Turtles in Space ep, the Turtles had to use whatever they could get their hands on instead of their weapons. Raph attacked with spoons for Pete's sake.

The pilot didn't seem too slapstick to me, however the pilot seems horrible, why do the turtles attack Baxter? Why do they go to fight him again? To recover the pod? Its just a mediocre plot, of course I won't hold it against the series, a pilot is usually made to show the big wigs how the show is going to be, look at the Avatar pilot versus the actual show, the basics are there but there is a big difference in writing.

I was just watching an old episode of the classic toon where in the very first scene Leonardo is throwing pizzas at these two mobsters robbing a kimono store. I was like "For God's sake, Leo, you're a freaking NINJA!!! Use your damn katana and cut those @$$holes' heads off!!!"

I wasn't too fond of the bee hive either, but what really scares me about the pilot is the writing. I don't dig the fact that the turtles place the duty on themselves to stop someone from trying to rob a bank. The turtles are teenagers, who barely even go to the surface. They barely have any involvement with the world up above yet, so why would they take it upon themselves to risk their life trying to stop a bank robbery? If they are going to be heroes, they need to become heroes.

CyberCubed
04-06-2011, 10:06 PM
That didn't bother me.

What bothered me is the AI in Don's MP3 player somehow super-powered Baxter's robot suit when he plugged it into it. I mean, WTF? How does simply plugging in a device for music somehow super-charge (and transform even?), Baxter's power suit?

Sounds like a ridiculous concept.

the whole plot is really stupid but its just for a pilot to show to the network where they are going with the show and doesn't necessarily mean the actual show will be written like that but they needed a simple plot to show an "average" episode so to speak. Other shows have mediocre unaired pilots that have the basics of the show yet are very different in tone. At least i hope thats the case here too since that "episode" was written terribly.

anyways hate to have to comment on my own sig...but that donnie cracks me up everytime I see him..

Jester
04-06-2011, 10:41 PM
I don't know if we can write the pilot off as "poorly written" because of bees. (MY GOD!) In my book "good writing" is more about the wit of the dialogue and less about the strength of the story, per say. Sometimes good dialogue can make up for a rather lack luster story.

"Two guys work at a pair of neighboring stores. All day they goof off and talk about their sex lives and pop culture as people come into the store and "annoy" them."
Sounds like a great movie from that description, right? Add great dialogue between 2 characters who've known each other for years and you have a great flick.

Just sayin'.

Since I don't know how they actually get to the point of throwing a bee's hive at Baxter, I can't be 100% sure about this but I don't see how that is all that slapstick-y. I mean it's a bee's hive, I wouldn't want one thrown at me. That's pretty brutal.

Didn't the company in Korea handle all the animation and fight scenes. I'm with the TC, this is what really made the series what it was. The awesome fight scenes. I don't know what happened when it went to BTTS, it was such a horrible show because of not only the stories but the fight scenes as well.

If they want awesome fight scenes they need to work with the right people to make it happen. Have you guys seen Young Justice? Go watch it and tell me those fights scenes aren't awesome, i believe its the same team that made 4Kids 2K3 TMNT.

I'm afraid that Nick will just make the battles really pathetic with no backstory in the show at all, since Nickelodeon is just a bunch of shows with stupid fart jokes. I'm sorry to say I fully expect the turtles to attack with pizzas, beehives, and water from hydrants.

So how was the action so far? Probably not on par with 2K3 but how would you rate it? My guess would be Fast Forward kind of fight scenes?

Fast Forward: C+/B-
BTTS: D+

Finally got around to reading through the link you guys put up earlier. Sounds interesting, but I'm a bit hesitant on the whole April being a 16-year-old girl thing. I kinda prefer her as being an adult. I'd prefer it if they just introduced a "female mutant" close in age with the Turtles as opposed to April for some reason.

Everything else, though, seems interesting. The age thing (based on the info we do have), is my only real objection.

BttS's sub-par animation was a combination of a lowered budget (a problem the series ad been dealing with as early as season 4--note that that's when the series stops using split-screens) and a particularly rushed production. Note that the last few episodes look considerably more polished than the first.

Good animation is a combination of two factors: good storyboarders, and the animation house. You can have awesome storyboarding, but if the people animating it aren't up to snuff, then you'll have bad animation. Conversely, if you don't have good storyboarding, all the pretty animation won't hide the fact that the action scenes look stiff and boring. Also note that an action scene from something like The Spectacular Spider-Man will often look very different from something in TMNT 2k3, even when both were animated by Dong Woo.

Great post! The split screens were something I enjoyed and appreciated! I remember arguing with someone that the same creative teams did not exist through seasons 1-5 and FF and BTTS. He claims everything was the same I said there had to be a different team working on TMNT once FF started. The storyboards, animation, fight scenes, and writing was different.
