View Full Version : Ninja Turtles and Their Elements of Nature

Hello everyone. This is my first thread. I would like to discuss the mysteries behind each turtles headband. In Ninjutsu, there are five elements:
Chi-土 (earth)
Sui-水 (water)
Ka- 火 (fire)
Fu- 風 (Wind)
Ku- 無 (Void)
All of my life I have noticed each turtle's personality. Leonardo is like water. He is always calm and he adapts to every situation. Raphael is like fire. He is hot headed and hot tempered. In a fight, he is a force to be reckoned with.
Michaelangelo is like earth. His attitude is "down to earth" Get it?:tsmile: Also he is stubborn with much to learn. Now, where does Donatello fit in? Is he wind or void? Here are my thoughts: If he qualifies under wind, his attitude is passive. When his brothers tease him for knowing too much or not being hip enough, Don never adds wood to the fire. His superior wit allows him to change the subject so the situation can change in his favor. If Don qualifies under void, he does have the power to make something from nothing. I barely seen him angry in the cartoon or movies series. I will like to know from you all. What do you think?

They all wear red bandanas...

Leo :trazz:

Raph :tmad:

Don :toops:

Mike :tlol:

lol. Anyway I would say Mike is like wind in that he cannot be controlled. He just does what he does and goes where he goes

That is a good observation Neutrino. He is all over the place. As for all of them having red headbands, that is crap that NECA put out.:ohwell:

Um, actually they all originally had red headbands in the original comics that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created back in 1983/84... They did not get colored headbands until the cartoon came out...

Never read the comic. :ohwell:
I will love to buy them though because I've missed out on alot. In 1983/84, I was too young to read...

I personally would've pegged Mikey as wind and Donny as earth (maybe).

I actually really like your evaluations. You sound like you've generally put interest in this matter, and it's an interesting concept that nobody has really talked about in depth before, at least to my knowledge.

I like Donatello as wind, I think it fits. His head is usually in the clouds thinking about whatever interests him at the time; plus he's naturally passive. As void, it would make for a very interesting story arc a la Vol.1 #37 (when Donatello felt he was the shaman) because I can see the void element being the "unique" one, if you understand what I mean. But I'm also biased because I'm a Donny fan. I like him better as wind, though.

I think what could be interesting would be if Michelangelo was void; citing his loyalty/innocent emotionalism as motives for saying so (his creating something out of nothing). It could be utilized in that way, too. I can see him as earth, also. Mikey was sort of butchered in popular culture, but he is a really down-to-earth Turtle.

Thank you DonnyTMNT. Yes, I have placed alot of thought into this. For instance, I believe Splinter is the one that gave each turtle their headband. Splinter had to wait until they reached their respective ages to train in Ninjutsu. Each turtle reacted differently to the training thus giving them their personalities regarding life. The color of headband is elementary. Blue is water, Red is fire, Orange to me can be earth, and Purple is void. Ninjutsu always been one of the martial arts I've been studying all my life. So, I just wanted to share my thoughts on this awesome forum.:tcool:

If you are interested in the bandana-to-personality relationship check this (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=30383&highlight=bandana) out.

We tried to talk about it a while back but the discussion fizzled.

Yeah, I checked it out. It went downhill quickly. That thread was all about color obsessions. I am here to shed light on this matter.:D

Wow. With Nickelodeon, Don + Leo + Raph + Mike = Aang.:tlol:

Anyway, I agree Mikey is down to earth. What I don't agree with is that I don't really feel he was butchered for pop culture. He just changed into a Jack Black. That's how I see him.:tgrin:

Anyway, which element fits Splinter's?

Splinter is the element of Mu 木 (wood)
Besides being a wood rat, he endured all of life's struggles according to the elements stated. There were times when he was stubborn and full of anger, he has a down to earth attitude, he can make something out of nothing, and is now calm like water. So, he is like the tree that gives life to these turtles. In Ninjutsu, wood can be symbolized as the center of the elements.:tshifty:

Yes, it is "ki" or "moku" in Japanese but one must realize that kanji came from Chinese. I am using Chinese Pinyin.:tsmile:

Yep...balance of 4 general elements applied to all the aspects of the life (work, personalities,friendship....)... it is the western/occidental concept of Ying-Yang... In my opinion: And I had post this one before: This thread:
http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=30384

Leonardo: WATER: Flexibility, adjustment, sensibility, fluency, reservation(reserve), intimacy, pity, need to link itself(himself, herself) emotionally and service.

Raphael: FIRE: Vitality, passion, vehemence, energy, enthusiasm, force, honesty, radiation, abruptness, will, initiative, exaltation and restlessness.

Donatello:LAND: Firmness, stability, tenacity and accumulated energy, search of the concrete thing, practicidad, patience, autodiscipline, caution, safety in the procedures and convention.

Michelangelo:AIR: Freedom, ideas, looseness, change, I centre in his(her, your) mind, analysis, indifference, perspective, verbosity, curiosity, conceptualization and need to socialize.

Adding:
Splinter: WOOD or Metal// VOID As center in Turtles“ Life (Maybe even Heart? :P )

This is pretty much why I said wind for Mikey and earth for Donny,

It is great to see many enthusiasts out there that shares a common interest in martial arts and TMNT. So, I guess the creators did a little homework in making each character the way they are.

Thread resurrection time.

I was thinking that it does fit Leo (water), Raph (fire), Mike (air), and Don (earth).

I also think that if it was true, then it's clear to see why Leo/Don (water/earth) get along (not in IDW, lol) better and Raph/Mike (fire/air) get along better. Obviously Mike is everyone's pal, but him and Raph have a special bond.

4kids expolited these during that Shredder vs. Splinter battle in their Return to New York arc as the Mystical Ninjas contained these elements, and it really shows how important 2003 Splinter was in helping the turtles who were down for the count at that point of the battle. Maybe Splinter could have taught them those skills to make the turtles even better fighters and allowing the correct turtle to take out their evil counterparts. But I feel the style of the OT wasn't suitable with the way it was targeted.

There is a fanfiction about this on the Internet. It's called Aspect Elemental, and seems to be written in early 2002.

Who'd they label as each element?

Wait in the 2k3, didn't each TMNT take on one of the elemental ninjas? Does anybody remember who each was fighting?

Splinter just finished them off....the boys did fight them for a little bit:
To answer ya Mikey:
Raph vs. Water
Mikey vs. Metal
Donnie vs. Fire
Leo vs. Wind
Splinter vs. Earth...initially. Then like Mr. Turtle says Splinter takes them out with the Sword of Tengu.

no, it was jester , he took on the void and destroyed all.
