Yes, to be quite honest I'm really not pleased with the cg designs.
It all looks like it's made out of clay.

Thanks, Powder. I'm glad you think this will be worth watching anyway.

Still, I actually LOVE the new CGI animation. I do prefer the 2k7 look, but this new look they're getting is amazing and original.:tgrin:

The OT animation was not bad, just mostly for the kids. The turtles looked kind of cute.

The 2k3 animation, to me, was not the best. There was not enough light and shadow, I guess. Plus, no one looked as cool as soon as I read the 84 Comic issues.

Maybe in the future, there will be a 2D animated show, giving them a 1984 look in the contemporary world. Think of it like a Batman: Brave and the Bold show.

Still, I love their new look.:tsmile:

Nope. This show can make up for the turtles' past failure in the CGI medium.

Only for the turtles. I wish to see more, though. But I'm confident this will be great. I don't mind the look for the new Green Lantern series. So hopefully, this will be good, too.:tsmile:

I prefer 2D. They look too blocky or something in CG, but not much I can do about that. As long as the quality (characterization, story, etc.), is okay, it won't matter too much to me.

The animation needs to work in the confines of the stories they are trying to tell. Of they think a CG style will work better for what they are going for then I say go for it. I personally still prefer 2D animation for most things. CG to me always seems to age poorly but 2D withstands the test of time if the story is solid.

A good example of this is Beast Wars. They had awesome stories but when watched now the CG looks clunky. It isn't as well done as it used to be, but at the time it was ground breaking. If it had been 2D the cluncky animation wouldn't pull you out of it.

after seeing the amazing animation in other current shows that use 2D animation (like young justice league) I have to say that yeah, I really do prefere a 2D animated show. I just think it looks better and more "organic" than the mechanical look of CGI.

That and the proportions are awful. They took some influence from the movie design and I wish they didn't. I hate that skinny leg giant calf crap. I also really don't like or see the point of the third toe.

But to answer the topic question I'd take 2D over 3D anyday anytime. I saw some clips of the new Green lantern show and it looks really bad and out dated I fear turtles will look like that too.

Wow... Good question. I do enjoy watching the standard cartoon series, but I'm interested to see how the CGI plays out. :) As long as the content is solid, I think I'll be happy with either or.

Quite honestly, I like both kinds of animation, as long as either is done correctly and well, and don't look like a brain-dead babbon did it

Whitewolf89 I think you nailed it when you said "as long as either is done correctly and well". If you look at some of Nick's CG programs it's a toss up. But the same could be said for the 2D. I have faith though that we are in for a treat.

well, here's my two cents on this one quickly...
I love classic animation and remain impressed with what can be done in this technique...I accept the computers as just another tool to use in that respect, however I must say that most movies and pieces of cg animation does seem to look and feel similar to it's competition(at least to me), but that is not to say that cgi can't stand out from one another...

leo565 you mustn't forget that the 2k3 series used highly stylised characters and surroundings, while as the animators of the ot drew the surroundings for example to resemble reality....I disagree with you on the light and shadow point you brought up...
I loved both shows and am quite excited and happy about what I have read and seen so far on the new show...I only hope nickelodeon, as a world wide operating network, does give us the turtles at the same time around the globe!!!!

Like I say: it depends on the animation. Now and then you'll get good and bad 2D and CGI animation. So it doesn't matter for me.:tsmile:

I said the part about "Light and shadow," dude. Not Leo565.:tlol: Anyway I said that because I found the animation a little bit too dark. Also, I found it uncomfortable to look at the turtle's faces and expressions. I don't know. I'm just kind of biased to the 2k7 film look.

Plus, Splinter on the 2k3 show scared me. His teeth stood out a lot, and I could hardly look at his whole face. :tlol:

So I hope you get to see the new series. I don't have Nickelodeon anymore. I might as well have someone TiVo it for me to record on a disc, or just watch it online when I can. :twink:

I feel the same way. I'm confident in the designs for Splinter and the Shredder, but April is the one I'm really wondering about. She looked too skinny in the 2k7 film. I hope she looks just right on the new series.

I prefer 2D, but as long as they aren't using that annoying flash style animation like in Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, then I'm fine. I hate that style of animation. It's fine for an online animated short, but a regular 30 minute series? Bah!

Considering my avatar uses computerized software, CGI technology with an "enchanced 2D" look is very possible and needs to be better utilized. No more cel painting, just digital files that are very doable in today's technology.

But switching back now is simply throwing a knuckleball and too late. We need to realize that we can't stay stuck in the past forever. But I'll just go to the older series if I want that 2D feel and can just hope for the best.

I thought I would have but I think they will be able to do some cool things and that the show will likely have enough of a budget that it wont be a low rent crappy cg show. It is the best time to have a cg show much better than when Peter Laird was looking to have a show done in 3d.

Hopefully the show wont deviate or do anything to extreme that I won't like. I suspect it will be a very hi quality show.

I could careless if there's 3D shows. They could disappear from the face of the planet all together and I wouldn't mind. There isn't a single 3D animated TV series I've seen that I liked. Some of it has to do with the animation just looking offensively awful in most cases but most of it is the series themselves are complete garbage. Like that awful CG Garfield series for example. It's barely above After Effects puppet animation in my opinion.

I'd rather see 2D reign supreme forever. You can mix 3D with 2D for some good results and more of that I'd be fine with. No one is using 3D because it's the future they're using it because it's cheap. The only good thing about 3D is it isn't being done overseas in sweat shops. Give it some time though I'm sure soon it will be.

Reall really old cartoons have bad animation too. 3D just needs to progress to a level where it's nice to look at, although in many, many cases it already has. 3D is the future, kind of like how there isn't many TV shows with puppets anymore.

I don't mind CG if it's done correctly. However, I don't know that I've seen a TV show that has "done it correctly". Usually CG in shows is done poorly due to budget and/or time constraints.

The CG in TMNT was fine. It had good animation, although the look itself wasn't the best.

I did however like the 2001 CGI pilot at the time, and with a little updating, I think that look could be done very well.

Overall, I prefer the Turtles in 2d for TV, unless by some miracle the CG can get the treatment it deserves, which I just don't see happening.

Yeah the Hanna-Barbera age of cartoons from the 60's-80's was horrid. They did low budget animation. They actually apologized for bringing the standard down. You look at the Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry, and Tex Avery toons that came out before that and tell me the animation was bad. It was awesome, and possibly even better then what we have today. Just because something is old doesn't mean it wasn't animated well. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is from 1937 and not only does it look amazing on bluray but it's animated extremely well.

3D/Computer animation has been around since the 70's. They didn't have to work out movement and the rules like 2D animators did so they had a head start. They can also motion capture if they want. Yet it's still not there yet. Technology will always have advanced further and make what preceded it look poor. A pen on paper will never look poor if the person behind it has talent. 74 years from now when Snow White is 148 years old it will still look amazing. The CG films of today will not. Example, look at a Playstation game and tell me its graphics hold up to that of a Playstation 3 game.

As for the puppets the Muppets have had different TV series on consistently for awhile now. Sesame Street is still on, over 4,000 episodes later. There's others too and while they're mostly kids shows they're still using puppets.

and this right here are my exact sentiments. I love hand drawn animation, most of it is just beautiful. I enjoy watching the old cartoons and I try to support the new ones that still do traditional style, whether it hand drawn or digital I like it. CGI in particulary TV CGI tend to use these stylized designs that just look fake or ugly. And really I just don't feel CGI has the same human touch like hand drawn animation. Look at these animation from classic Disney from the 90's :

2av9SQsMIi8

EyS3weMlxLA

simply breath taking isn't it? I love the deatail of the dancing fire Esmeralda and the overlay of Pochantos running with the warring armies and walking to the cliff to execute John Smith. Noiw I know CGI can this off as well but my God just knowing that most of this was done just hand drawn is just amazing.

My only fear for this cartoon is the CG will look so dated in a couple years it'll remind you of some old videogame.

People said the same thing about the OT back then (even when it was still on during the Red Sky seasons, the early seasons felt dated). But CG and the Turtles have been a long time coming; given the first pilot was released back in 2001. That's a full decade that has gone by considering that was a concept for the 2003 series, until that was switched to 2D animation. CG technology has improved quite a bit since then; just watch the other two series if you want 2D. But don't let "getting dated" get you down; just look at all of the OT fans who still enjoy it today; they know it is definately a product of its time, but still enjoy it because of nostalgia. And besides, good CG can be more realistic than 2D anyways! Just look at the current generation of video games and compare the graphics to those released a decade ago. See the difference? Heck, the OT could have even been done in Claymation (now THAT is cheesy!)

If you really love watching the OT for memories, that means you may think it doesn't play well, but you still enjoy it because it reminds you of the times you first saw it. Hopefully, this animation will be good. Besides, some 2-D animation I see today is horrendous. Regualr Show= yuck! Secret Mountain Fort Awesome= disgusting! Don't get me started. Recently, the only good 2-D animation is in those Batman, Marvel, and Thundercats series. I have no problem with CGI animation at all.

Doing a TMNT series in CGI would be more interesting than one in 2d. In CGI you can do some pretty cool fight scenes. An excellent example of this would be Transformers: Prime. The fight scenes in TMNT pretty good. The CGI may not look good now, put once we see it in motion it might look better to some people.

I agree with the post right above me. I will always prefer 2d/hand drawn animation in cartoons and make up/props/costumes as opposed to cg in live action films. CG is cheaper to make but it comes at a price, it looks stale and cold. It may be because I was born in 1986, but 2d cartoons have more life in them. Kids today seem more interested in live action disney shows, rather than animated shows. I wonder why............

Tell all the people that flocked to Toy Story 3 that CGI is cold and has no heart. Sure, Pixar is at the top of the mountain but not all 2D animation was spectacular in the beginning. Mainstream CGI is still in it's infancy. Give it a damn break.

TV shows don't have the budget of a movie and people said the Turtles move as if it's claymation.

Toy story 3 is a fully animated movie, not a live action film with bits of cheeseball cg thrown in, and toy story had an endless budget for amazing voice actors as well. Which this new turtles show wont have. The cg animation for the nick show looks like dog **** next to pixar films so your post is irrelevant. 2d animation kicks ass.

I'm glad you have the amazing ability to know what the animation will look like from a bunch of promo pictures.

I wasn't so much talking about how this show is going to be amazing. I just hate this whole "I hate all CG animation anywhere and it should go away forever" mentality that so many people have taken on. This new show could be garbage for all I know, All I've seen are a bunch of pictures.

What the hell are you talking about.

I mentioned in my first post about how many film studios save money by adding cg in live action movies and it tends to look cartoonish and lame (many horror films, the hulk live action films etc).

I don't have to see the animation for nick's show to know it wont look nearly as good as a pixar film.

The character models suck. I can understand why people on this forum have high hopes for the show but it doesn't change how bad they look. Defend it if you must but according to almost every comment under the show's fb page on the picture of the new character designs, most feel the same as I do.

And who was talking about adding CGI to live action anything?

Nobody's saying it's going to be amazing groundbreaking CG animation but to completely dismiss the ANIMATION over a PICTURE is completely idiotic.

Right. Facebook comments. Genius central.

That's because pixar makes high-budget films that bank hard in the box office. This is a Saturday morning cartoon.

Don't use the FB "fans" as justification, those stupid sacks of sh*t can barely remember the turtles names let alone spell them.

I'm not a stupid fly by night facebook tmnt fan and I still do not feel that the designs and animation from what I've seen and have been seeing are up to par just yet.
I hope that they will step it up a notch before the release of the show.

I'm just asking considering the rather low want for anymore computer animation

I would prefer a hand drawn 2d cartoon hands down. Maybe it's cause I'm in my 30's and grew up on the 1980's toons and I have a learned liking for it but none the less I still prefer 2d cartoons, especially when it comes to TMNT.

I'd rather watch a toon made in the same style as the original series over something like the 2007 movie 7 days a week.

EDIT: Also, I've seen some of the turtle images for this new upcoming show and you can color me unimpressed. I'm gonna give it a chance but
so far from the images they have put out publicly the turtles look outright dumb. Hell even my 7 year old son thinks they look "wrong".

Up to par with what? The designs have a ton more character than the 2k3 designs where they all looked like walking fridges.

Or is it another one of those "It doesn't match the perfect image in my head so it sucks" things?

Know what? I grew up watching 2D animation too. Why does that mean I have to dwell in the past and want things to remain static forever?

Hey bucko don't lump me in with everyone else.
I'm quite fine if the show looks good, but so far I'm not impressed.
Yeah because there's a perfect image of tmnt in my head...since I've enjoyed everything thus far but the coming out of their shells stuff and the idw comic (but I'm warming up to that).
I just don't feel that the designs or animation are as good as they could be or deserve to be.
The toys I saw are fantastic but even they capture the characters better than the cg stuff I saw at Nick did.
But from what I was told is that the action figures are based on 2-D art and changes will be made, etc.
I'm not just talking out my @ss here.
I'm actually quite concerned for this show.
Because right now from what I see it's all over the place.
The only thing I don't like about cg cartoons is that (at least on tv and low budget direct to dvd films) is that they still treat it like the early days of black and white cartoons with movement and the "look everyone a silly cartoon watch it dance and whistle and show off".
Anyway, it probably will be fine but I just wanted to toss my own opinion into the wring.
Mostly because I see you guys bullying anyone who doesn't agree with your own opinion.
I'm quite fine that you like it and can keep living my daily life, I don't see why it's so hard to grasp that someone doesn't feel that this is the best they can do cg or not.

As someone who grew up on traditional animation, of course I'd prefer a 2D series.

I guess 3D animation completely taking over is just one of those things cartoon fans will have to get used to.

I can fluxuate pretty well with 2D and 3D cartoons, Transformers Prime has worse CGI animation than Mainframe's offerings, but the scripting is strong and the voice actors fabulous. It is content that defines how good a show is, so I hope the new TMNT has all of that in it.

@ turtletitan97:...you know that's not a pro for cgi, you know....guess what?in handdrawn animation there are no limits for fight scenes as well...you can practically do whatever your imagination/personal taste desires...

that being said, I am excited for this new show....am curious as how it turns out in the end...kevin's statements in michelles cowabunga corner were surprising to me(of course one should also notice that the producer of the show is considered a friend of him...) so I am looking forward to being surprised again in fall...

Wow. Quite an interesting debate here. While I've grown up with 2D animation, I certainly don't mind the way that CGI has evolved and has taken over. Sometimes, it's good to have something new. Yeah, the designs aren't perfect, but they aren't as bad as I thought they'd be. I think we should wait and see how this show pans out first before we make judgments on the animation itself.

There was a show I used to love on Cartoon Network that used both 2D and CGI animation called Code Lyoko. It was done very well, and I really enjoyed it a lot. Even if this new show isn't 2D, I'm still going to give it a chance and watch it. I'll take either or really.

that's why I wrote 'as well'...his point was that this was something exclusive to cgi and I was just saying that everything is possible to show in animation, attention, 'as well'...

I think its funny that just because someone says that the new character models suck or that they prefer 2d animation that they're "living in the past" or something of that nature. I like many cg cartoon films, however cg cartoon shows never look quite up to par with 2d animation in my opinion due to budget contraints and time. TMNT can be comedic, fun, and kiddyish at times but it also is moody, violent, and dark too. Blocky green computer turtles just don't feel bad ass to me. Imagine looking at characters that look like these on panels in a comic. Would be laaaaaame.

Also...as someone brought up earlier. The idea that cg has no limits with fight scenes or whatever is idiotic because 2d animation has no limits either in the imagination department. This is one reason I like anime over modern American animation , it just looks better to me.
