View Full Version : How far/popular will this series have to go to make it a success?

There are some cartoons that only last a couple seasons but remain successes. Generally, this only applies to original series. Given that this will be the third incarnation of an animated show, a lot is riding on helping, maintaining, or even hurting the TMNT brand. Of course everyone hopes that this show lasts 7-10 seasons, 150-200 episodes, new movies/video games, a surge in comic/toy collecting, and other merchandise like what happened in the wake of the Fred Wolf series. On the other hand, poor management, poor quality (i.e. bad show), or overhype can hurt the TMNT brand, which can even affect the earlier series; sure no matter what happens, there will always be fans of the older TMNT series for nostalgia, but that won't allow younger fans to "discover" the older stuff; this is why franchises such as Woody Woodpecker and Popeye, popular with Baby Boomers, no longer resonate with today's kids/young adults that well. We don't want TMNT to head in that direction.
At the end of the day, I'd say if the show went at least 5 seasons or 100 episodes, I'd consider it a success. Nick shows tend to get frequent reruns, so it is important for shows to be nearly as fresh the 10th time they're rerun before the next batch of episodes arrive. But this generation on the other hand is different; kids rather watch stuff on-demand, so having quality material is very important; it's not like before the Internet when I grew up where I simply watched what was on; today's kids tend to be better in terms of what they really want to watch. Plus, especially later in this potential run, you'll have parents of kids who grew up with the Fred Wolf toon, so good family friendly entertainment can go a long way toward success.

Considering the 4kids series was a success and its ratings were never very good, I'd say a show airing on Nick which will get a ton of promotion should do fine.
Since Nick owns the property, I can see them keeping the show alive for 7-8 years assuming it doesn't bomb quickly. I doubt it would though.

As much as I think you can't beat the original, I hope this show does very well. Very well, that it would have more seasons than Spongebob Squarepants. If that doesn't happen, then I'm still hoping that it does very well no matter what. It doesn't have to have 10 or 7 seasons to be successful. It can just be a great show that gets a lot of PR. If it does go up to 10 seasons, I may be amazed. The only problem with it having more seasons like 8 or 10 is the show may go downhill with inspiration and storylines. It still might be fun. I'm guessing that you found all 10 seasons fun from the OT series.:tsmile: I guess we'll just have to see. Still, CyberCubed, what do you mean, "I doubt it would though"? Do you believe it won't be bad?:tconfuse:

Saying that it was successful and in the same breath saying it had bad ratings isn't the best way to back yourself up on that statement.
Also, Nick doesn't mean instant success. Look at it's other cgi shows...
I think the show will day 5 years or less. 3 years is my guess.

I don't know. These are the TMNT. They're likely to do very well. Besides, I love The Penguins of Madagascar.:tsmile: Nick does have some good CGI shows. I just don't like ones such as Fanboy and Chum Chum. That one looks like it'll be forgettable. With TMNT arriving, this will definitely be a replacement for shows like Spongebob and iCarly.

Sorry. I'm just hoping it becomes more popular. I'm getting tired of DC and Marvel superheroes getting all the spotlight. I do like them, though. Maybe it's something like Transformers that I don't like. I wish that wasn't that popular.
Don't be sorry. Who knows 100% what it will actually do. It might be a hit might be a miss. My guess is it won't last very long because of a lot of things that go through my mind about the entire thing...

It was decently successful for a cartoon airing today, although it obviously wasn't as popular as it could have been. 7 years, 156 episodes, a TV movie, and an extensive toy and videogame line to support it over those 7 years was a moderate success.
As for the Nick show, I doubt they wanted to spend $60 million on a franchise, support it for 3-5 years, and then dump it.

Well, that kinda my view on it. I want the show to do well, but I don't think that it is possible for the show to run 7 years let alone over 4 (at least without an hiatus). Though CGI is quick and convenient in many ways, as far as I know, it is not cheap. In less the show brings in a HUGE amount of dough through viewers and toys sales, eventually the cost out wins the benefit. :ohwell:

Besides, I'm hoping TMNT is going to be big like Sponebob, but without all the idiocy and constant crying in every episode.:tlol: Nick is working very hard on this than they are with Supah Ninjas. Personally, I'd say ...
About 3 or 4 seasons (and roughly around 75 episodes).
However, realistically speaking, it'll probably be more like 2.5 seasons (50 or so episodes) before everybody involved gets bored and moves on to other things.

a weird question but in order for the new show to be aired in reruns for years to come, does it have to have enough episodes to qualify for syndication? or is this totally a mute point since it would be animated by nickelodeon and not able to air anywhere else in the future.
has any show originated on nickelodeon and aired elsewhere?

if it has at least as many episodes as the OT or 2K3 had it will be a succes. but for it to become more popular than OT and 2K3 then it must have more than 200 episodes something that is difficult to happen.

I think Batman: The Animated Series had about 4 seasons or so. That, I call, a major success. It doesn't matter how long it is, it only matters if it has a good run. Usually, for shows that go on for too long, they become very weak. My philosophy for making television shows: Sitcoms for 5-6 seasons, Dramas or Action/Sci-Fi shows for 5-7 seasons.:tsmile: So I wouldn't mind TMNT having 7 seasons for this new series, as long as they don't have a whole year of them in the future and that stuff.:tsmile:

there were 3 original seasons with 65 episodes (40 in season 1,10 in 2,15 in 3) and then there were 2 seasons of The New Batman Adventures once Superman: TAS became a hit. There were 24 episodes in these 2 seasons, bringing the total to 89 episode.
I think if the series is strong...let it run as long as it remains so.

I'd have to agree somewhat. Hannah Montana was a decent show, and I liked how it started. Once the movie came out, I thought that was going to be like a finale. It turns out, they had two more seasons to go. The last two seasons were very weak. Everything just wasn't as funny as it used to be. Plus, this was a sign that Miley Cyrus was done with Hannah. I could see why. You don't want the world to remember you as a teen singer who's like your alter ego. Miley should have just said, "I want to finish this so I can just be myself and have fun." Sure, I think she went too far (Must I mention salvia?), but I always thought she had potential. I don't know. She's got this Stevie Nicks quality to her voice. I still have hope for her, even if I think she's crazy.:tsmile:
So yeah, I liked Hannah Montana, but I thought it was big until the third season. I feel iCarly has been strong throughout each season, but that only depends on what you find good episodes. I missed the one with Jim Parsons, and I think that one must have done well. Why? It's iCarly. Also, it's Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory.:tgrin:

There's a difference between not having interest and hating a show because it's popular.

They already have 26 episodes for Season 1, so most likely we'll get over 100 episodes of it if it goes on for over 5 years.

Penguins is doing decently and has had a couple of DTV movies, and there are other shows that get new episodes from time to time. The problem with most Nick shows though are they are shown so much that they need to be episodic and not really have story lines that follow through.
TMNT has a couple things going for it though. It has the older generation that is nostalgic for it. These are the parents of todays younger generation. It is something that they will be more willing to sit down and watch with their kids because they have fond memories of it.
Then you have the fact that the quality of product being put out seems to be of a better quality of late. Thundercats, MLP, and TF: Prime being a few examples. They have to raise the bar if they don't want to fall to other brands. The market right now is full of programing to chose from. If they don't step up and deliver a high quality show then they lose out on something that has potential to be a cash cow for them.
With the comic doing so well as it has with only two issues out but reprints already having to happen the future looks bright for TMNT. However I believe that it would be in the properties best interest to do a campaign tying together the different products they are putting out. Reach out to each crowd and try to cross pollinate.

I rhink the reason that Nick is going with CGI for this series is that Clone Wars is doing very will.Clone Wars is on its 4th season. So,I wouldn't put it past The producers of the new TMNT series decided on CGI.As I said I wonder how April will look.I wouldn't be surpised to see the action figure line at next years Toyfair.

I just want to say, the best CGI shows there are right now are The Penguins of Madagascar and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Best hand-drawn animated shows: Batman: Brave and the Bold, Thundercats, and sometimes The Looney Tunes show. The ones I have not mentioned are probably obvious that I don't like them, especially like Regular Show or Fanboy and Chum Chum.:tlol:
So yeah. I think this may get somewhere for audiences old and new. The good part about this new series is we know some things that will happen on the new show (e.g. Yoshi as Splinter). As for the IDW comics: I'm kind of happy for the success, but I don't like the direction it's going. I never really cared for the new comics that much anyway. My personal opinion is that part of this shows success relies on how the new generation embraces it. Another part is the obvious things such as quality of the animation, intriguing plots, interesting/likable characters, and ect.
I really hope this show does well. I am afraid to get my hopes to high and get crushed like they did with the new Looney Tunes Show. But, for some reason, I have a feeling this will be better than that.
I suppose all we can do is wait and hope until the first couple of episodes are released before we can make logical estimations on its success.

Don't get me wrong, The Looney Tunes show isn't the most God awful thing that has ever been on TV. In fact I don't think it's a bad show at all. It just wasn't what I had been expecting. I still watched all the episodes as they came out, I was just expecting more slapstick. Not seeing any anvils, mallets, or dynamites kind of upset me. What f*cking war? They're on the same network. There's no war except in your head.

Uhh...If the show doesn't catch on and nobody watches or cares about it they won't hesitate to cancel it.
They own TMNT so they could just make whatever money they can on dvd re-releases and the like. They won't keep a failing show on the air just because they own it.
They'll advertise the hell out of it and give it star treatment on the network because they own the series and want it to be successfull.
I don't see it bombing. The fact that they'll probably put it on inbetween Spongebob or Icarly airings will ensure it will have hold overs from those two shows.

That doesn't guarantee success at all and it's not a fact they'll put it in a timeslot between iCarly and Spongebob. It's all speculation at this point since we're A YEAR away from the show premiering.

Yeah i'm not worried about it, i'm confident it will do well. btw, TMNT 4Kids did pretty well. Someone said the low ratings, i'm not so sure about that. I mean 4Kids wasn't the best network but it wasn't the worst. I heard TMNT was one of or if not their highest rated show. I know a lot of people don't know about the 4Kids version but i think the ratings and show overall is still considered a success.

It's easy to jump over the bar when it's an inch off the ground.
There is no way TMNT Unlimited is not going to be a hit, I even made a thread about it months ago http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=33491

TMNT Unlimited is a silly nick name
I'd love to see it become the biggest thing on Nick, but who knows how this generation will take to the TMNT.

What does the "unlimited" in the nickname mean anyway? Seems quite generic.

I have a feeling it will be a success. Remembering how successful the last two shows were, maybe this one has a chance with a new generation of fans and with the older fans.

I don't necessarily think it will fail. At the very least, I think this series will be a moderate, under the radar success like the 4kids show.

I have to agree, that is the most probable outcome for this show based on pure estimation.
But who knows, this might be one of Nick's biggest shows. Think of how many current fans of TMNT are going to be watching it, plus the amount of kids from this generation who will end up liking it? That's quite a bit of people right there. Well, as long as the plots and animation are good there will be that many people watching it anyway.:tanime:

Highly doubt that. It is either going to be a great success or big flop. They r putting to much time and effort into this franchise now and Nick wants a huge return on there investment.
They r making a movie of TMNT!!!!! are they making a movie of power rangers????? No.
Power Rangers has been an under the radar success.
But TMNT is either going to be a big flop or Huge Success. and with the way the comics r selling and from what certain dromers r saying it looks like it will be a big success, my only concern is the CGI,
but with the younger generation growing up with more cgi shows and movies they may not care or notice!!!

Nick owns the TMNT franchise now, they're not going to let something they purchase for $60 million flop.
Its common sense, they're going to promote the hell out of it as their next big thing.

Most of that money they'll get back to break even is when they do the live action movie in theaters. That's where all the true money is made.

Oh I have no doubt that Nick is going to pour a lot of money into making this be a success. Like CyberCubed said they aren't going to put $60 million out and not try to recoup it. Plus all the money they put into the series. I mean just look at the voice cast they got. No reason to go after that type of talent if your not making this a priority.
I can see this being pushed and pushed hard. I'm hoping for at least 2 good seasons my self. I'm not going to get my hopes up. George Lucas taught me that lesson three times already. But regardless I expect Nick to bring their A game on this new series.

If we get a postively recieved movie and three seasons of another show I will be pleased. That will be successful in my eyes.

I think this series really has the potential to explode and have Turtle mania hit again. I know its going to be mainly aimed at Children but I really hope they follow Cartoon Network's lead here and make it much edgier like they did with Thundercats and Young Justice. I really hope the show follows Young Justice's example as opposed to being like Teen Titans. I guess thats the best way I can describe it. I really think they are going to plan to make this at least a 3 season series if not more. By that time hopefully we'll have at least one movie out and a successful toyline that will relaunch Turtle Mania and help keep interest in the show alive. But to me as long as its a well written show (like 2k3 was) then it should have no problem being successful.
