View Full Version : Leatherhead - villain or friend?

Leatherhead wound up becoming a friend of the turtles in Mirage, 4kids, Archie. In the original cartoon however he remained a villain the whole way through.
Do you want to see Leatherhead become their ally after maybe an ep or two of fighting the turtles, or should he stay as a villain?

Here's an interesting thought: how about having Donnie think that Leatherhead is good, but ends up getting fooled. We could have Leatherhead be a good guy first, but then later show that he's a traitor to the turtles. I don't know, I think it would be cool to have Leatherhead both ways.:tcool:
Just to add: "What a Croc," in my opinion, was not a good title for an episode. I hope Nick calls theirs "Crocodile Tears" or better - "Crocodile Laughs" to portray Leatherhead as the bad guy. Or, the episode should have some symbolic name. I don't know.

For me it depends on his appearance, I guess... I love Mirage/4kids' Leatherhead, but not more than I do in the OT. That absurd cajun critter is one of my all time favorite (OT) characters. If they go the route of big hulking intelligent naked gator, then I guess make him smart. If not, give us the swamp creep.

Yes we get it, you can write better comics AND better episodes. You're a literary god.

Time to buck the trend: I actually prefer the Cajun villain Leatherhead. I think he has more personality.

Okay, so maybe I'm ahead of myself. I'm sorry. I just think I have ideas that I think would work for a new series (or maybe the Nickelodeon series, which is what we're talking about). I just get too excited, I guess. Sorry. I just think that my fanfiction and fantasies may become a reality or something. Who knows? Maybe in the future. I still have to be realistic. Still, I can dream, can I?:twink: I don't know: back on the "Why the hate?" thread, I posted my feelings for a storyline that would've been better for the movie. By that point, someone responded saying that my idea was better. No, I don't want to get cocky. I just love devising ideas. That's all. I'm not a literary god. I may have a little arrogance in me, but I assure you, I'm not pompus.:tsmile:

It's perfectly fine if you like devising ideas. Just calm down a bit.
Pretty much the same thing was said when you started to ask if the new April wears socks or not. You'll see what you wanna see soon enough.

I always wonder how much the writers actually look into fanfiction, as they may often have better ideas than the writers themselves! Plus, it's easier to get that first draft seeing what the fans want. But with all these Nick threads about "what do you want x to be?", unless we have some official cast/crew member post, have no control over what it's going to turn out. I'm making my personal scale in terms of characters that are the most threatening, with 10 being "Big Bad" villain (Shredder), a "5" meaning neutral (Rat King), and a "1" meaning a true hero (The TMNT). Basically, I would give Leatherhead about a 6. In real life, a turtle species called an Alligator Snapper have been known to kill and eat small alligators, yet alligators themselves have known to eat turtles as well. Therefore, I would expect a slightly better chance/occurance as a villain here.

Of course then the end result would appeal to, like, 12 people (at the most). Plus, let's be honest, everyone here will be watching no matter what, so why should Nick bother catering to the "die-hards"?
If you want the new show to be successful, it needs to lure in a much more mainstream audience (far beyond the world of forums and "fan fics").
And thus Leatherhead should be a villain ... because, like, alligators are all scary and stuff.

I like Leatherhead better as a friend of the Turtles, rather than an enemy. To be very honest, I was NEVER very frond of the Cajun version in the OT. The one in the Archie Comics TMNT series was fine, because he was a good guy, and friend of our Turtles. Still a Cajun, yes, but a good guy.
And that, for what it's worth, is MY 2 cents.

I preferred OT Cajun Leatherhead to 2k3 friendly hulking scientist with bouts of uncontrollable rage. Though I liked 2k3 better when he was mindless and enraged and I wanted the OT version to be a good guy when I was a kid. I guess the Archie incarnation is my favorite overall.

I... didn't care for either version of Leatherhead. I would think of him as more of a 'gray' character. Not good or bad, except for when it suits him best. Crocodiles have survived for millions of years on opportunism and instinct, Let him keep those same traits...

That aside, I actually prefer Cajun enemy Leatherhead. He was more entertaining to me.

I vote scientist ally. Leatherhead, in that fashion, makes me think of Beast from X-Men. I like having a character with the "super smart guy prone to bouts of rage" dynamic in TMNT. :tsmile:

Cajun villain Leatherhead would be my pick.
Simply because it was how I was first introduced to the character, and is pretty much still what first comes to mind whenever thinking Leatherhead even though I am aware of the Mirage/Archie/2k3 versions. He just made for a very entertaining villain.

Got to agree with Jester, I love the OT cajen Leatherhead bc of his striking personality. I also prefer him as a villian.... dont know why jst do.
I like him better as a villain, however the cajun leatherhead was terrible.

I like Leatherhead as an allie more, especially the way he acted in the Archie comics.

I like both versions of Leatherhead honestly.
Though one nice point about making him a friend is that Donnie then has someone he can really relate to outside of just April. That was actually probably my favorite aspect of Leatherhead's character in the 4Kids series.

I prefer the Mirage Leatherhead whose neither good nor bad. He does what he needs to which sometimes pits him against the turtles and others makes him an ally. He also seems to have a lot going on. The only creatures that ever treated him well and essentially raised him left him behind and it's the turtles fault that this happened. This creates an interesting relationship between them and there's more to it then him just being good or bad.
While the OT Leatherhead was fun and entertaining he'd be pretty hard to pull off today. A huge part of his personality came from Jim Cummings voice and he would be hard to replace. He was also rarely given an opportunity to really kick some ass and spent most his time getting out smarted by frogs or carting around hostages like leased dogs.
If anything a mixture of the two could be interesting. Archie almost did it to an extent.

The Archie version of this character is my favorite and I really hope maybe that we will get something akin to it. Maybe he is mutated by the Kraang and the Turtles rescue him. Maybe they are fighting the Kraang when he is being mutated and at first hates the Turtles because they didn't save him in time.

A mix of both generations would be fine by me. a grey area villain not an ally with villains or turtles, with intelligence and is a bounty hunter sort. Cajunn styling would be a bonus in my opinion.
Alligator/crocodile: Intelligent patient hunters who wait to trap there prey in there jaws by staying very still in the water. has a timid relationship with humans.

As Mirage is my favorite version of the character I'd have to go with that. I hope they keep him true to how he was created. Such a great character.

I don't see why not use both. Have Leatherhead be the smart good guy and make the rajun cajun version of him a bad guy and give him a different name. Come one, Transformers does this all time with their toys

I agree with everyone that likes Leatherhead to be morally ambigious. He's neither good nor bad. He is what he is. This pleases me.

To me that's what made his such a great character in the comics. He wasn't a good guy but he wasn't bad. There was much more to him then being a staunch allie or villain. I always saw him as working the angle of what would get him what he wanted, home to the Utroms.

I'd like his 2K3 version. An Allie of the turtles but suffering from uncontrolled rage attacks. He's my favorite version of the character.

See the whole Leatherhead thing too is going to play into if there are Utroms in this show too I think. I mean to work the story as in Mirage they would need them, and by extension the 2k3 version too. I think the Fred Wolf or Archie version will probably be closer to what we get.

Agreed, if the Utroms aren't in this series I think Leatherhead will most likely be a villain from the swamp.

That makes the most since I think CyberCubed. I mean it was a fun version of the character and I did enjoy the fact that they changed him for Archie but it still isn't my favorite version.

It was tolerable and understandable making Leatherhead an ally in the 2003 cartoon just as he wasa an ally in the archie Comics, but I always have found him more interesting and fun as the cajun accented, catch phrase filled, mutant aligator bully out for revenge. I would love to see Leatherhead be a villain again in the 2012 CGI cartoon or the IDW comics. "You Betcha!"

I liked the 4kids leatherhead, but I grew up with the 80's toon... I'm more use to him as a villain, a cajun villain! I loved to hear the guy talk, lol!!!
I think I'll be happy either way nick goes, but if they give him the "cajun sound" I'll be Really happy!!! :D

I like Leatherhead best as an ally. And as highly intelligent, but with problems. I never really felt there was much to the villain version of Leatherhead. He's more interesting to me as a troubled good guy.

That is why I love his character and want to see him portrayed that way. How many villains are fun by just listening to them and still come across as bada$$?

I'm with Zog. Leatherhead is one of the best supporting characters. I feel that his appeal is entirely wasted by making him just a villain.

Villain seems a bit much, but he could be antisocial, traumatized and lashing out in perceived self-defense. Maybe he escaped the Kraang and just doesn't know that there are good people out there, until he gets to know Donatello. That could be interesting.
