Did anyone out there get a copy of the TMNT #1 (1st print) from IDW that is the newsstand version? If you need further details about this you can check my blog post about it (http://www.tmnt-ninjaturtles.com/blog/?p=527).
These were sent to Barnes & Noble stores (but just not to any B&N in my region for some reason :tgrumble:). I'm having the hardest time tracking down issue #1 from the newsstand. Would appreciate some help tracking one down.
Thanks!

Oh lord, lol.

So this ''edition'' has,

The cover used for the #1 newsstand edition was the Raphael Dan Duncan (aka “Cover A”).
The text “CVR A” is missing from below the IDW logo in the top left portion of the front cover. Only “#1 – $3.99” displays.
The bar code in the lower right corner of the #1 newsstand edition is slightly shorter than the bar code for the Direct Market edition. Additionally, there are a few additional numbers on the bar code for the Direct Market edition.

Really?

Yeah, I know...like we need another variant of #1. But that's the skinny. Same goes for #2 as well (which I actually found) and supposedly for #3 and Raphael as well.

Well I just went into my local BN, not looking for TMNT, and I noticed they had about 10 newstand copies of #2. I know these wern't there last week. They were all creased, but I found one I think I can live with. Any sign of #3 in BN. Anyone have a #1?? Also....does BN get any incentive variants?

I chatted with Bobby Curnow at IDW and he believed that the newsstand editions have only one cover which is the same one used for the "A" Direct Market editions. Also, he was under the impression that IDW may only be doing newsstand editions for issues #1-3 but he wasn't positive about this. So far, I've only found certain B&N stores that carry the IDW TMNT title but I'm pretty sure they don't (and/or can't) sell any of the Direct Market ones. The B&N stores in my area aren't getting ANY titles from IDW which seems odd.

As for the #1 newsstand edition, I was thankfully able to acquire one through one of my blog readers. I've also had people contact me that they indeed have the newsstand #1 but wanted to hold on to it. Contrary to the Direct Market versions, any of the newsstand editions that don't sell in the retail stores are returned to the distributor/publisher for credit (and likely destroyed). Take the limited time you can find these editions and combine that with the fact that most people buying comics in B&N are not collectors and these are turning out to be extremely hard ones to get in hand (in any condition).

As for #2, I was able to track down a few copies of it in great condition with a little sleuthing.

B&N is the only place I've been able to find them. Bobby Curnow also thought that only B&N stores would carry them.

Right now these are the biggest hole in my IDW TMNT collection.I have a feeling Issue 1 is going to be a huge pain in the ass to track down. Does anyone know if you can order them from B&N online or are these in store only?

If anyone finds a store that stocks these and can grab me one. Ill buy you one too.

I drove around tonight (in the snow) to 3 different B&Ns and they did not have any TMNTs....they also did not carry any IDW comics at all. The store where I got my copy by my work carried multiple IDW titles.

I spoke to B&N. With the newsstand editions (unlike other versions), the stores have the ability to return unsold copies to the distributor. According to B&N, just as with magazines, when a new issue comes out, the old issues are removed and returned to the distributor for recycling. Hence why you are only able to fine one issue of a given book at any of the stores.

I was able to track down #2 without to much hassle.

I bid up to $25 on that #1 that sold on ebay awhile back but it ended up selling for $42.:ohwell:

I checked five B&N locally (including the ones that had them before) and nothing yet...where did you find them?
I also called around to some B&N in neighboring cities/states out west here and they don't have them either (although I'm not sure some of the associates really even checked). :tgrumble:

It's crazy how random the distribution of these seems to be...almost at the whim of the distributor supplying the newsstand for the region. No one at B&N even really knows where these newsstand issues come from.
I just talked to an associate at a B&N in PA and they said their system shows they are not yet released...so frustrating.:ohwell:

I finally got in touch with someone at B&N that had some decent info. (some of which I guess we already know or could deduce)...

She told me that the B&N newsstand contents can differ greatly between each B&N store, even within the same area, and that the contents aren't in any way controlled by the individual stores (i.e., they can't order anything for the newsstand...it just shows up). Apparently there are regional directors that pick certain markets where they feel certain "niche" items (like comic titles) will sell. So, most everyone gets the big publisher's (Marvel, DC) titles and only pre-selected stores get the smaller publisher's (IDW) titles.

Though I'm not sure I'd classify IDW as small (maybe small-ER) this would explain why every store where I've found the TMNT newsstand also seems to carry the other big IDW books (30 Days, Transformers). It's either all IDW or none apparently. In the case of my locale...it's none.

I've even contacted IDW and they are unable to tell me who gets the newsstand copies.

I used to think IDW was bigger then they actually are but according to Diamonds (http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales/2010.html) figures for 2010 they only did 4.08% of total comic sales and even less in overall units 3.45% of the overall comic market in the US. Thats still almost 20 million in sales but nowhere near the 150 million plus that Marvel and DC each pulled in.

With at least 2 recent national bookstore chain bankruptcy's Brick and mortar bookstores have been hurting and the huge amount of returns to the publisher on newsstand edition comics combined with the almost near impossibility to find a copy in a condition worth buying I'm wondering if outside of a few movie related titles publishers will just give up on newsstand editions. It doesn't appear to be very profitable (unless your a flipper selling IDW TMNT on ebay) or a good way to advertise.

Id be curious to see the sales figures for newsstand editions compared to a publishers overall sales.

The closest B&N to me that Ive been able to confirm has TMNT is 110 miles away. :ohwell:All said I hope IDW drops TMNT newsstand editions soon.

rich
11-11-2011, 07:32 AM
King Suck, I'm certainly with you in hoping that IDW drops these newsstand versions. That actually may be happening anyway (but this is not 100% known). I asked Bobby Curnow from IDW many of these same things about the newsstand issues a while back and the following are snippets of his responses to my questions:

-They're certainly factored into our sales records, but they wouldn't be in Diamond's reporting, which are the numbers one usually sees reported at comic book websites and the like... I personally have no clue how many we sell to B & N this way.

-I believe, and I really just overheard this in passing, could be completely false, that we won't be doing any more newstand editions anymore. The only reasoning I can think behind that would be it's not worth the effort commercially... but again, I could be COMPLETELY wrong about that. You really shouldn't consider that more than gossip.

I think the first 3 issues have newsstand editions...I'm 90% sure those are the only B & N issues

So, this #3 that's on the newsstand now may be the last newsstand version of TMNT from IDW but we'll only know this for sure by keeping an eye on the newsstand at B&N.

Since Diamond is IDW's sole distributor for their comics and graphic novels, I wonder if IDW's parent company, CTM Holdings, is the one distributing the B&N comics because according to their SEC filings they do distribute to B&N.

It's definitely possible. The CTM Media Group coverage map (http://www.ctmmediagroup.com/coveragemap.html) shows only 25 states of coverage and nothing west of CO or TX. However, they may contract that out to different vendors altogether.

If you think about it though the logistics of it shouldn't be too hard to trace. It's likely that all the IDW comics are printed in the same place and then distributed from there. So, Diamond gets the Direct Market versions from the print vendor but who receives the newsstand versions? Tracking down the print vendor(s) for IDW would likely lead to some more information.

Crack open the comic and read the fine print on the bottom of the front page. It should tell you who printed it.

For example, Mirage always used Brenner Printing for Volume 4 and Tales V.2

Yeah, I did the same and checked last night when I got off work.

That's so weird, Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, etc. print the names of the company who printed their comics.

I still think CTM is who handles the disstribution of the newsstand editions, it just makes the most sense thus far. :)

Just today I checked at a few B&N that have previously had the newsstand editions and all of them confirmed they sold out of their copies of #4 already (and all of those stores said they had received 5 or fewer copies this time). Yikes! :teek:

If anyone finds a #4 newsstand in their local B&N and is willing to pick up an extra copy and mail it to me I'd front you the cash for everything via PayPal. Same goes for Raphael #1 this Wednesday. Send me an IM. Thanks!

Dang...I didn't get a chance to go today....hopefully tomorrow. My BN tends to stick them behind things so they are not visible to the naked eye. I figured these wouldn't be out yet as it has been taking them a few weeks after release to show up.

Haha that's you Rich? Do you happen to have anymore newsstand issue 3s left? I meant to bid on the last one you had up but spaced it and was out of the house when the auction ended.

Ive only been able to track issue 1 and 2 down so far. Local B&N doesn't get anything IDW related so the secondary markets my only hope. For sanity's sake alone I'm hoping they discontinue the newsstand editions soon.:tsick:

Hey guys,

I am looking for the #1 and #4 newstand edition. If you are willing to sell any extras or happen to see one at a store, pick it up and I will pay for it.

Also If anyone needs #3 there was 2 left at my local Barnes & Noble and I would be willing to pick them up for anyone who wants them as long as they are still there. All you would have to pay for is the book and the shipping. The covers didn't look bad, no tares or anything major, just normal comic/store wear slightly bent or discolored corners, and a kink or two by the staples.

if interested let me know.

...I am looking for the #1 and #4 newstand edition. ...

Hey Gooseatello, unfortunately the newsstand #1 has all but disappeared. I saw two of them for sale on eBay a month or more ago but that's the last I saw of them. Unsold newsstand copies are returned to the distributor for credit so they don't stick around like the Direct Market (comic shop) versions. There's a very short window in which they can be acquired on the newsstand.

As for #4, I called around to many B&N stores today and they all said they didn't have any TMNT in stock. I'm still unclear as to whether there even is a #4 newsstand. Previously a B&N told me their #4s had all sold out but now I'm wondering if they were meaning their entire TMNT newsstand stock was sold out and not specifically the #4. The newsstand editions have typically not shown up in B&N stores for a few weeks after their release date so it seems too early for #4 (and Raphael) given they were released within the last 11 days. This is something I'd like to confirm.

I'll put this out there for everyone on the forums...if you have a #4 newsstand in hand could you respond so we can at least confirm its existence?

I experienced the same yesterday...no IDW at all in my local B&N when previously there were Ghostbusters, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Star Trek (but never TMNT). That's weird.

I'm starting to have serious doubts about the existence of a TMNT newsstand edition for #4. I've not yet heard of anyone that's actually found one and every B&N seems to have nothing yet. Today marks exactly 2 weeks since #4 was released to Direct Market and the newsstand copies for #1-3 have all shown up in B&N within 14-17 days of release. I'd say if we go another week without seeing them that they've been discontinued.
