View Full Version : What do you think IDW's Krang will turn out to be?

Given they purposely are using the name, "Krang" I don't see why they would be using a very familiar name if he wasn't an alien brain of some kind.
I know IDW is changing the origins drastically, but if Krang just turns out to be some middle age European general from Earth....then why name him Krang?
Do you think Krang is an alien brain in IDW? Will he be from Dimension X? Will he have any relation to the Utroms? What do you think?

In the one panel they show his arm it does look like his arm is robotic. I think we will see a familiar but different Krang.

I'm sure this is a big point we're supposed to be speculating about among ourselves. Whatever happens I'm sure he'll be revealed as some kind of brain-like entity, whether it's a standalone thing, the result of some kind of freak accident, a member of the Utroms, or a member of "The Kraang" because yes... there's no reason IDW would bother with him if Krang wasn't going to be, well, Krang.
I think right now the first arc is trying to keep things sort of "down to Earth" a bit, but eventually the sci-fi will be amped up when things go cosmic and that's when we'll get more into what Krang is all about.

As long as he is pink, utilizes a badass robotic suit (hopefully more combat ready than the utroms) and wants to wage war on Earth, I'm happy. I think that boils Krang down to his essence. Especially the pink part. Oh, and the purple sunglasses.
I'm also hoping that he will be reimagined menacingly enough (yes, that is an adverb) that he can stand on his own and his relationship with the Shredder will be minimal, if not nonexistent. Both he and Shredder were so impotent that it made sense that they partner up to deal with the turtles, but hopefully they will be competent enough that this won't be as necessary.

I guess Andrew's "Down to Earth 1st arc then ramp up the Sci-fi to 'Over 9,000!!!'" idea is what put him in my head. Yeah, Krang reeks of Utrom/evil brain stuff, but who doesn't think Fugitoid and Triceratons when the Turtles go into sci-fi territory.

Something very similar to what we know of as Krang for sure. I'm just glad that the character is presumably going to be apart of the IDW TMNT universe. And not as just some quick cameo as a wink to the fans, but as an actual character that's going to have a role in future storylines.

I really hope Krang still has an army of Rock Soldiers in Dimension X, mainly to see a serious take on those characters.
I could see the Rock Soldiers being like shock troops and General Traag being devastating.

I would be a little bummed to see the concept of the old toon robotic suit thrown out the window. It's a little silly, but honestly I think it's an awesome design. I love seeing the turtles struggling in battle against, frankly, ridiculous enemies.
That being said, I am probably in the minority and I expect to see it made-over. Excited to see what they come up with.

To be honest I hope Krang is at least a little sarcastic and somewhat whiny, its what separates his personality from Ch'rell's.
All we've seen him do is give Stockman orders, so who knows.

I would be a little bummed to see the concept of the old toon robotic suit thrown out the window.
The concept of the robotic suit wasn't an old cartoon thing, but a Mirage comics thing, the bodies the Utroms ride around in the abdominal cavities of.
It's a little silly, but honestly I think it's an awesome design.
There may be some visual similarities but I wouldn't expect a ton.
I love seeing the turtles struggling in battle against, frankly, ridiculous enemies.
As long as things don't venture head-first into camp or silliness for the sake of silliness then I'm OK with "ridiculous enemies." Visually, at least. The Turtles need credible threats, not a revolving rogues gallery of Fred Wolf buffoolery.
To be honest I hope Krang is at least a little sarcastic and somewhat whiny, its what separates his personality from Ch'rell's.
A little sarcasm is fine but I don't think IDW is out to make a new version of Krang that's whiny.
I want Krang to be bad ass. That is the biggest problem for me when I watch the old show. His Archie version was so much more menacing. I'd like to see something closer to that.
I think IDW could do a lot better than even the Archie version of Krang. I don't think that'd be very hard, actually.
I still think his island is the top of/covering up IDW's version of the the Technodrome. :D
Hm, could be. Some kind of doomsday weapon, anyway. Or a spaceship.
Or all of the above.

Unlikely.

I was actually referring to the "old toon robot concept" Not the idea of the Utroms using humanoid robot's to get around, in general. I just like the way Krang's looked in the old cartoon. My grammar probably confused you. I'm not the best when it comes to punctuation and such.

I'd prefer if Krang wasn't an Utrom, but some sort of relative to the same species. Perhaps maybe Krang's species and the Utroms could be at war?
Krang has much longer tentacles than Utroms do, and he always looked different enough from a regular Utrom in every incarnation.

Ptttf, we all know the real Krang would see betrayal coming a mile away. Krang and Shredder were constantly at odds in the show, and even tried betraying each other a few times...
In fact in the Archie series Shredder says, "Krang?! I always felt like we were stronger together rather than apart."

Hmm, I'm thinking with the desparation, he's a human who's been horrendously disfigured/and or crippled and is wanting to start a fresh.
If you look at the two components; the psychotropic drug and mutagen I think he's trying to transfer into a stronger super soldier body. It seems like Splinter is getting memories that aren't his own, so that led me to thinking it's a path of memory transfer for ol' Krang. :)

I really liked the 2k3 Shredder but when they revealed he was just an utrom it kinda bummed me out. not that i didnt like him or anything but it was just different than i pictured it to be. im hoping that the body theyve shown so far turns out to be a disguise and later reveals that hes a brain or utrom. on another note does anyone think the thugs from Raphael #1 that look like Bebop and Rocksteady will turn out to be them or just a cameo reference?

I think right now they are playing it by ear with no set plan on when or whether to turn them into the mutants we know and (some) love. They put them into the Raph story probably because they thought it was a good fit for an issue that required two thugs and won't bring them back unless the story calls for them again, somehow. However, I think it's only a matter of time when they get curious and decide they want to go for the full on Rocksteady & Bebop action, but who knows when that will be.

We don't know if the mutagen can effect human like it does in the original cartoon. If we learn that it does not just turn animals into humaniod form but humans into animal-like form then yes. It all depends on the mutagen. Some of us would like it to happen, but at this point it was just another nod to their characters.

That mutating is even on the table for Bebop and Rocksteady "when the Master wishes it" directly implies that the mutagen can work in reverse (humans into animal mutants, not just animals into mutants). It's not a question of "if."
On the plus side, though, I'm pretty sure it won't be working as retardedly as in the Fred Wolf camp... i.e., it won't be just touching a flea and then some mutagen and morphing into FleaMan, but rather something more complex and believable.
Metropoliskid41
01-05-2012, 10:21 AM
Yeah I agree I thinks its gotta be some kind of "rebirth" chamber that has the mutagen and animal dna pumped into their system. Who knows, maybe they'll just get 'roided up by the mutagen and be more a just massive human similar in size to Strong Guy from the X books, and just happen to have face deformities that may make them look kind of animalish but not actually a cross between a Rhino & Man and such. That might piss some people off, but I wouldn't mind it being an unstable process that deforms them, and continues to, and then maybe they try injecting some animal DNA into their systems to stabilize them. Kinda along the lines of X-MEN First Class beast using Mystique's DNA to try and cure his mutant appearance and instead getting turned into an animal looking beast.

Interesting idea, that would be a twist and a different take on the often used "alien invader comes to earth for world domination" plot that every comic universe from Transformers to Marvel to DC all seem to have. It would be pretty sweet if that was in fact Krang's motivation!

I'm not against having outer space adventures or dealing with aliens. I mean when you look at the Mirage version by issue 4 they were dealing with aliens and going into outer space. Triceratons and Utroms have been a huge part of TMNT for a long time and I expect them to be for a while to come.
So it would be very disappointing if Krang turned out to be human and there no aliens at all in this universe. I believe it was Peter who enjoyed the space aspect and Kevin that wanted the Turtles to be more grounded after all.

Its not nostalgia for me with old toon chartacters. I always thought Bebop and Rocskteady could be more serious and threatening and I thought IDW could give the pair a chance to be shown in a darker and more serious light oppose to the incompent goofs used for comedic relief. I tihnk they deserve it with a fan following and fondly remembered characters. Now,its time to make the incompetence and stupidity an aspect of one intrepretation and see what else creators can do with them.

Well said! I would really like to see them re-imagined as formidible opponents for the Turtles. And it seems like they are at least undergoing some sort of martial arts or hand to hand combat training as we saw them in the training room with Alopex. I don't expect them to be full on ninja, but a step up from moronic street goons, and actually have a little technique to go with their strength.

Well besides incompetent street thugs, the first thing people think is super strong rhino and warthog mutant when they think of Bebop & Rocksteady, which can be pretty cool. That's as much a part of their character as their more moronic qualities, right? That's pretty much the only aspect I'd like to see kept, but it still makes them R&B, doesn't it? I think that qualifies as a non-nostalgic reason.

Well, I didn't think it was too bad, and I'm not saying it won't be tricky to pull off. All I'm saying is that the idea of a mutant warthog or rhino is no more inherently silly than say, a mutant alligator living in the sewers. At the least, I can see that there is plenty of potential to make them cool and interesting, especially since the Fred Wolf cartoons didn't do much to develop their characters, which leaves a lot unwritten and a lot of potential untapped. A good example is to look Dave Rapoza's recent illustrations/interpretations. Bebop & Rocksteady don't look too goofy there!
Coola Yagami

I don't see the problem with Bebop and Rocksteady Andrew. The old cartoon took the Turtles, Casey, April, Leatherhead and such and made them sillier, but it worked for that show, despite how serious they might be in the source material. Why can't it also be in reverse? The Archie comics already showed a more dangerous competent Shredder, a Krang capable of genocide without batting an eye, and even Bebop and Rocksteady (what little we saw of them) were taken out in regular fights, rather than tripping them up with roller skates and stuff.
I just feel they can work without changing too much of the intended characters. They're street thugs. They're mutant animals. They're not that bright but strong enough to throw cars and crap to make up for it. Take away the extra added silly shenanigans that season 2 and onward added and you basically got season 1 Bebop and Rocksteady with a lil blood on their hands.
If Slash looked so bad-ass in the toy, and yet the toon made him goofy and stupid... and yet the Archie comics (and videogames) kept him closer to his sick murderous design... why can't Bebop and Rocksteady also maintain their original kick-ass toy design as well? Even the Shredder figure makes him a ninja, creator or mutagen and blah blah, but nowhere does it say 'he's Krang's whiney little bitch'. So I'm sure IDW can keep a more dangerous Season 1 Bebop and Rocksteady, cranked up a notch, and they'd still be the more serious equivalent of the old show.
I don't know... I think I see them kicking ass and such like the equivalent of the 2003 He Man show when the characters were actually allowed to FIGHT and such. Even the dumbest of Skeletor's lackeys were still proven to be viscious and dangerous threats, rather than completely useless buffoons like in the 80's. I kinda think the whole 'stupid incompetent henchmen that makes you wonder why the main villian keeps them around' thing is dying out nowadays anyways.

Sure it's a question of if, we haven't seen this happen yet. It doesn't matter if they told Bebop and Rocksteady they can be changed. Remember Tristan's comment (don't be too sure about B&R's mutation).
It could just be a lie to tempt B&R and other punks with illusions of grandeur into following them.
We don't know yet. I do hope it's possible and Bebop and Rocksteady do mutate though.

I am under the impression that IDW was taking Ch'rell's origin and making it Krang's. That is fun of speculation. We have to wait and see. No one expected this reincarnation bit so something else out of the outfield may come into play with the character.
