Just figured a poll would be interesting to see. Vote for what you prefer in the IDW comic. Red or Multi-colored headbands.

I'm enjoying the book well enough that it doesn't matter one way or the other to me. I was happy they brought in the multi colored bands, but it wouldn't have killed it one way or the other for me.

It's kinda neat; the idea that red headband turtles live in the comics, but I like this too.

I personally liked the approach they took. It's like they hit a certain "level" and ascertained their "black belt". Just like the hitting a certain acheivment to receive weapons.

That would have made sense if they started out wearing those rainbow colors then hitting that ''level'' and becoming a true clan with unifying colors.

But Splinter saying, ''Hey, good job on your training! Here, everyone gets to wear their favorite colors now!'' That's F'ing goofy.

With the way the story originated, Splinter specifically mentions that they wore the colors to remind them of their lost brethren and who they were searching so diligently for. It was a completion of training by finding Raph.

We already have a clan that wears identical clothing where they are indistinguishable from each other, and that's the foot

Ah clan smlan. Splinter even says although they are a clan, they are individuals as well. They have never been a "traditional" clan, plus in this universe they aren't (as far as we know thus far) trained and raised to kill Shredder. So the whole point of them being peaceful-don't kill-ninjas is contradictory as is. This whole "clan" business is over-exaggerated.

While I certainly don't hate the 80s toon, it is my least favorite TMNT medium and like I said in another thread, lumping all of us colored-lovers in with OT fanboys is plain generalization, and is rather silly.

I agree with you - there's nothing traditional about them.

They have never been a "traditional" clan

But keeping the bandannas red is one very small, easy-to-do thing (that already has precedent in... oh, I don't know... the source material itself) to help sell the "These Turtles are supposed to be ninjas" factor. I guess that factor is less important to a lot of fans, largely those who are fans of the larger media... interpretations of the TMNT where they're not portrayed as any kind of a ninja clan but still wanted to keep "ninja" as a buzzword.

To me? It's paramount. TMNT as a concept is pretty wild, but if we can't buy that they're for-real ninja (and not, you know, pretend ninja), then the water falls out of the whole thing.

I still find it funny how you keep pressing the opinion that if you're not wearing one solitary color, you can't be a ninja as fact.

Nevermind the fact that red isn't a very ninjaish color in the first place, this "fake ninja" thing of yours is just silly.

But whatever.

I've never really cared about if the turtles' bandanas were multi colored or red, but for some reason, I prefer red bandanas for IDW.

I'm not exactly sure why, but I think it just fits the book better.

I just don't get why colored bandanas doesn't make them "real ninjas" - I mean c'mon, real ninjas wouldn't even wear bandanas where the TMNT do. It would most definitely mess with their peripheral vision. Very unwise. So if you're going to go that route, you might as well be anti-bandana, at least that's what would make the most sense for arguing this "real ninja" bit. Red is hardly any better for ninjas than blue, orange, or purple.

Plus, we were told from the onset that IDW was creating a new universe that was heavily influenced by the source material as well as all other TMNT outlets. Not the same as "we're going to totally stick with everything source".

EDIT: Woah! Bobby C. voted "red"! A rift between him and Tommy boy perhaps?! Will Mr. Waltz cast a vote?! Lol!

Samhain

I don't think we need to get into why the turtles actually wear bandanas and how red doesn't scream ninja. Tmnt as a whole is one big weird entity. But, Eastman and Laird gave them red because they thought it looked best. It's not the fact that it's the color red, it's the fact that they all wear the same color. Unity. If the creators would have given them all blue, or all orange then we would be in the same place. Giving them different colors is goofy and makes them look like a less legitimate ninja clan.

And I love the 80s toon. I love the movies. I wouldn't want them to wear red in other media. But the comic book turtles should wear red. I know alot of people like the multi-colors. But did you ever stop and think that every other outlet in media gives the turtles the colors. Now, even the comic has colors. Will we ever see all red Tmnt again?

Toby Barrett
01-17-2012, 10:38 PM
They are a clan, and yet they are individuals. The color you wear does not delegitimize anything.
They're still going to be the exact same ninjas we've seen in the last six-seven issues.
They're still going to be hiding in the shadows and dark of night. The way I see it, if they're not strolling around New York City in broad daylight shouting "TURTLE POWER" at the top of their lungs while piloting a blimp, they're still legitimate ninja.

Andrew NDB

The Archie TMNT rarely acted as ninjas. So if the IDW TMNT act like the Archie ones, would the color bandanas be justified?

Andrew NDB

The Archie TMNT rarely acted as ninjas. So if the IDW TMNT act like the Archie ones, would the color bandanas be justified?

Sure. I mean, my whole thing with the IDW TMNT and the red bandannas is... it began with them with all red. I kind of went, "Oh! Great, a new comic universe where they're going to be down-to-business, and IDW is taking the ninja thing seriously. Awesome, props for them." Then the bait-and-switch (I call it that not because I necessarily believe it's any kind of pre-conceived cloak-and-dagger thing by IDW, just how it looks) happened and I kind of have to go, "Oh. So no all-red bandannas... well now I'm wondering what's the plan. So far we have the seeds of a lot of other mutants that look like they're going to start popping up, Splinter telling the Turtles they can't kill, Bebop and Rocksteady on the starting line, Krang about to emerge, 'something for the Fred Wolf fans in #7' (because there's been a shortage of that already)... eh, this could all end up being some form of 'badass' when the smoke settles but I'm given very little but cause to be worried at this point." The only thing that reassures me is the quality and far-reaching nature of Tom's writing... I don't think he's a guy that's doing much of anything by chance, and there's a far-reaching plan for just about everything he's weaving (that already gives him a ton of points). I guess I'm only beginning to worry that it might turn out that his far-reaching plan is one that I won't personally be able to be on board with, but that's by no means a slight on him, that's just my own thing.

If we're talking about an adaptation of the Nickelodeon cartoon, or a Fred Wolf cartoon TMNT in print, or anything like that... of course they should bear the rainbow. Proudly. Stamped on their foreheads. Throw the letters on their belts, too, I wouldn't be reading it so I have no invested interest. In fact, to take it a step further and flip it for a moment, I would even go so far as to say it would actually diminish what the red bandannas represent were they to do something along those lines and give them the all-red bandannas.

So I'm reading IDW TMNT and, fingers crossed, waiting and seeing what comes of it. I still don't feel like we quite have a full grasp of the lay of the land of, 1) What the IDW TMNT are all about, 2) How far they will go as ninja, and 3) What their overall mission statement is going to be.

If what we ultimately arrive at is crime-fighters that clean up the streets of mankind's "scum" and go out of their way not to kill anybody (even if it's another trained ninja who is certainly out to kill them), then no... they probably shouldn't be wearing the all-red bandannas.

This is what I feel too. I'm sure that after a few more issues, we'll get a more complete idea of where this series is going.

As for me, I enjoy both the red and multi-colored bandanas, but I have a more nostalgic place in my heart for the multi-colored, so i'm going with that. I like the colors they chose for the multi-colored Turtles, so it's all good to me.

Besides, I thought the only reason Kevin and Peter had the Turtles all wear red bandanas in the first place was because the only time we'd see the colors was on the covers, so giving them different colors would be kinda pointless since the interior was black and white?

Despite some use of Fred Wolf charachters and no Peter Laird, the format style, art, logo, and tone better represents all-red bandanas. Weapons and skin tones are clearly enough to tell each turtle apart. Though I would accept color bandanas if some thoughtful storyline causes a switchover, or if they are used once as a running gag.

I don't see this debate subsiding anytime soon, I think IDW has done a pretty great job so far staying in touch with the fandom and really listening to their comments and concerns. I think the creative team, especially Tom and Bobby really take to heart and care about the fan response. Even though they may say there is nothing planned to switch back I don't see it totally ruled out.

I mean to me it could be as simple as Splinter going missing, whether its by Shredder's hand ala Movie I or by alien hands ala Mirage vol. 1, and the turtles respond by switching to all Red to "unite" in red bands again until they find Splinter.

Again, I actually have 0 preference, I enjoy all TMNT mythos (save for Next Mutation) and really see where both sides are coming from. If IDW decided to continue Mirage vol. 4 just like they did with the Marvel runs of GI JOE and Trans Formers then this would also be a good way to appease the desire for Red bands among fans. I myself certainly would love to see multiple continuities and versions of the turtles, so would totally be up for this.

I guess I can't say enough about the current team, I really enjoy the enthusiasm from everyone on board working on the book, and really like how they are sticking to their guns on the bands for the time being, even though it doesn't seem to be the most popular choice. To me they made it work pretty well and the switch from Red to colored made sense. To me that was the most important thing. Even though I don't have a preference I thought the switch felt natural and worked.

I'm just looking forward to more great stories, although I think my impatience may get the best of me at some points. :trazz:

I can already feel like its going to turn into a more mature take on the original cartoon with some Mirage elements mixed in. Meaning no "Turtle Power" but its still taking nearly every main element of the old series.

The ONLY Mirage stuff in it so far is a black Baxter Stockman and April working as his assistant. Everything else, even the now pseudo-Hamato Yoshi and Splinter are the same entity again...is taken from the old show.

I strongly believe General Traag will show up at some point too. If Tom is smart he'll do a Triceraton Vs. Krang/Traag/Rock Soldier war over the Fugitoid/Utroms....maybe they'll just ignore the Federation in this adaption.

I haven't read so far what felt as a good thing to me in reading the original comics with uni-colored bandanas...sometimes it only added interest int the character when you were not quite sure which turtles said something now...to me that only added enjoyment to the whole adventures...so my mind was figuring out who would think like him?hmmm.I think this must be michelangelo here...just as an example, in fact I cannot honestly remember a time where I had to stop and think about who is talking at the moment(when his weapon was off-camera)....
but I took that as an added bonus to the writing

I just hope IDW won't take this as a need to want to change them back to the red bandanas because I knew ahead of time that the Comic section of this forum would be overwhelmingly one-sided (which is why I wanted it in a different section to include the entire fandom). In fact I will go ahead and make a pledge to stop buying the TMNT comics IF they would try to go back to all red as a result. I did it with my beloved X-Men when Marvel foolishly took them out of their 1990's Jim Lee uniforms and could do it with TMNT as well if I had to.

Well, some fan you are. Even us red bandana lovers never threatened to stop buying the comics because of the change. That's stupid. Only if the writing turned to crap. Which I would be shocked if it did, because leaving out the banadna switch, I have LOVED everything Tom Waltz has done for the book. Most of us have. The thing is Coil, though some of us have little problem with the colored bandanas in other media, we were hoping the comics would stay true to...well...the comics and keep the all red masks. I'm sure if you took out the qualifier "In the IDW series" it wouldn't be so one sided. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that outside the comics I don't care if they wear tie-dyed or polka-dotted masks...ok maybe that was a bit much.

I have said before that in other media they should wear the colors. Because it's always been like that in the media. But the comic turtles should wear red. It's how it has always been with the comics. Can you imagine if all other media made the switch to all red!? It would be madness. Everyone would complain about it, even though that's how the creators originally had them. Some of you Multi-colored lovers think about that position. You would be pissed if those pesky all red bandana Turtles made their way into movies, shows, and toys.

I dunno... I think you lost me somewhere in there, but I think it's clear things are spiraling towards some kind of multi-faction free for all (Krang and his people/aliens/mutants vs. Shredder and his people/mutants/aliens, Old Hob and StockGen perhaps becoming some kind of in-the-middle faction or just being enveloped into one of the other two, and then the Turtles caught in the middle of it all).

I voted red, for reasons I have expressed quite a bit.

But, I will say that I was eventually curious to see the colored bandanas in the IDW series. I may have even wanted the transition down the line. But, for me it was too soon. I was still soaking up the enjoyment I was getting from the red bandanas. I wanted to see them take on The Shredder and the foot in red, amongst other things. The colors could have set the stage later down the line, for a new set of stories.

The change to colored bandanas would have worked better for me, had it happened down the line, after we had actually seen some character growth and all-red ninja action!

Also, I know some members here thought that the way Tom integrated the colored bandana's worked really well. Now, while I love a lot of what Tom has done, I can't agree with this. It just doesn't feel organic to me. Yes, its a clever route from point a to point b, but it still blatantly screams the fact that it's a plot device to get them in colors.

my preference comes more of

The Fred Wolf cartoon, yes, we get it. It's cool.

multi-colored mask turtles who fight villains to send them to jail and let the cops take care of the rest.

Nothing would make me walk away from the book faster than that if that became the status quo. Number 1: Why would the Turtles even be fighting crime? They're mutant freaks that live in a sewer and aren't part of our world and both Tom and Bobby have affirmed they want to maintain the "outcast" aspect. Number 2: What a ridiculous scenario. It's not one in any way exclusive to the Fred Wolf show or anything, in fact it's quite the norm in Batman comics of yore and all that -- you know, the whole, corny tie up some muggers/thieves/whatever with a little note so that the cops find them and the cops are just supposed to lock them up for hard time, as if the cops had been reading the same book we have/watching the same episode as us. How would that even work? What evidence would there be for police to book the criminals? A note from the Turtles? Would that be presented before the jury? When they arrive at the station all beat up from the Turtles, wouldn't that look pretty damning for the police officer booking them? It's absolutely retarded through and through.

Unfortunately, a scenario like this kind of DID play out in the Raphael special. Casey tied up Bebop and Rocksteady and told Raph, "I'll tie up the goons, call the cops" ... what was supposed to happen, exactly? What would the charge be, and how would they be held accountable for it? Casey wasn't going to be a witness. The cops would just show up and see a couple of guys tied up -- if anything, they'd have a pretty good place to play the victim(s). Because this is Raphael and Casey's regular two-man vigilante show, it makes sense in its own right (they're not really out there to mop up any streets, they just want to bust heads to blow off steam... and they might as well be criminals whose heads are the ones getting busted).

Pretty much on the same page as you on this issue. As for Raphael #1, I guess the only way it could play out is if Bebop & Rocksteady had prior records, which could be a safe assumption. Sure, there's not much to pin on them for that particular incident, but I'm guessing calling the cops doesn't hurt. The cops may even already be familiar with these frequent trouble-makers, so thugs probably still aren't looking forward to running into them. Again, not looking for this to become the status quo, but when they're just a bunch of goons, killing them in cold blood may seem a bit too harsh, so just leaving them to the cops is probably all they can do.

Red.

That being said it's not a huge deal for me. If the worst thing we have to complain about the new book is multi coloured masks then we've gotten off lightly.

That being said the argument about the turtles being individuals and being teenagers who generaly hate conformity only makes so much sense. Why stop at individialy coloured masks? Why not give each turtle their own "look"? Don can have a utility belt for his gadgets, Leo can wear a ninja cloak, Mike a T-Shirt with his favourite band etc

The other argument that it is a right of passage doesn't make much sense either. It made sorta sense in the IDW book but in general shouldn't they dress more like individuals after they fulfilled their mission to kill the Shredder (assuming that is their mission in the new book). Their mission accomplished they're then free to do what they want.

That would have made a lot of sense, Galactus. Similar to my thoughts, indeed. But, yeah, the defeat of Shredder would have made a great turning point. Missions fulfilled, etc.

I also think giving them each their own 'look', aside from the colored bandanas would be wonderful. I mean I would prefer all red, but like you said, if they are gonna express themselves, they'll probably do it with more than a favorite color. Raph can wear the eye-patch, minus the mask, Donatello could believably drop the mask altogether, Leonardo and Mikey could keep them? Just brainstorming.

Some of you Multi-colored lovers think about that position. You would be pissed if those pesky all red bandana Turtles made their way into movies, shows, and toys.

I could go either way. I just prefer the color coded bandanas. I never made a stink during the first four issues, in fact I loved them. And I loved issue 5, and the two micros just as much.
I just don't see the importance that everyone else apparently does in four giant turtles wearing the same colored cloth over their eyes.
These are still going to be the same turtles we've been reading about for the past six months, it's not like Tom is going to have them fighting with ketchup and cold-cuts.

Where's the "It doesn't matter" option? They're anthropomorphic turtles, realism was never really part of the premise for me. Also, they're honorable ninjas. That's about as non-ninja as you can get. And they fight an evil samurai. That's pretty unrealistic.

I actually like both red bandanas and the multi-colors

I like the red bandanas bc it makes the turtles seem more like a team. And they jst simply look badass. It also has the essence of one for all and all for one kind of like a brotherhood.

I like the multi-color bc it gives each turtle there own personality and give them each there own persona. I like the colors they chose as well.

With that said I decided to vote for Multi-color bandanas.
The main reason is (Lamest Reason) when I read the comics I have a hard time telling which turtle is who when they dont have/use there weapons and the multi color bandanas help with that.

I very much prefer red and I think I made a somewhat lengthy post about this. I think it would be neat if they wore red in combat and multi color at home in the lair if they want to be themselves or express themselves with different color bandanas. Although I guess it may cause confusion, I was liking the red tho.

I also agree I thought it would be cool to see a movie where they all had red banadas a stylized black and white movie like Sin City would be cool also for the turtles and make them more grown up or closer to the comics particularly the first issue would be neat to see some of that.

Dude, you're new here, but that kind of reasoning isn't new around here. We're trying to have a reasonable discussion on TMNT and there's always someone who has to point out that we're talking about anthropomorphic turtles so asking for realism is folly. It's just a cop-out of an answer and adds nothing to the discussion.

Just to add, I don't think anybody has gotten out of hand in this thread. I think we're all being pretty respectable regardless of opinion.

Based on the preview pics Tom posted of Duncan's art from issues 7-8....I don't think we have anything to worry about the Turtles being less "badass" with colored bandanas.

I feel sorry for anyone who might give up simply because of a bandana change, because I get the feeling the IDW series is shaping up to be something special. The first 5 issues work great when you read them all in one sitting, and the Raph/Mike micros were pretty good too.

Personally I believe this could be the most consistently well written TMNT comic series yet. All the problems that plagued Vol. 1, (guest issues), 2 and 4 (pacing), and even Image (low sales), are ironed out here.

Thank you for a reasoned and well thought out answer, but I disagree. It really is very relevant to how I, at least, experience the series. I don't really view the series as a take at realism, it's most definitely fantasy, and being fantasy it has some allowances on things it can get away with. Ninjas can be good guys, and anthropomorphic turtles can wear whatever colored headband they want from the easy to spot orange to the less easy to spot purple. Those things don't detract from the experience or add to it, they are, in many respects, nothing more than window dressing. The themes, conflict, those are the parts of the series that really matter.

Where do you keep getting this idea that ninjas are always evil? Is that an unwritten rule somewhere? They kind of go hand in hand with Samurai, some use their skills to be evil thieves and cold blooded killers while others do what's right. Both style of teachings, Ninja ans Samurai are based on living life as a warrior with honor and respect and making life around you better. The term Samurai means "Servant" as the are trained to be servants to life and their community to make it better. I don't get where your argument that the TMNT book is fantasy because they are good ninjas is coming from. That is a severe hole in your flawed argument and shows a lot of ignorance on the subject.

I never said they don't kill, sure they were essentially trained assassins, that doesn't make them inherently evil. Just because I'm a trained and skilled marksmen as well as trained in hand to hand combat means that I go around shooting people and killing them with my barehands. Just because you have the potential to harm or kill someone doesn't mean you are evil and thats all you do. We have black ops agents are trained killers, that doesn't mean they go around capping 8 year old kids and killing innocent women. Killing another warrior or someone deemed by society as evil doesn't make you evil yourself. By that logic you are saying that the American heroes known as the Navy Seals are evil. Sure they killed, and sure there are clans who abused their power and ruled with an iron hand, that is the case with every group of people who have ever been in power. Hell some past Popes are even regarded as corrupt evil officials. But that doesn't mean that the whole group of warriors, who have Honor as the core to their training and beliefs are all evil just because they are trained to kill.

I have an idea, let's ask Wikipedia what she thinks:

"A ninja (忍者?) or shinobi (忍び?) was a covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan specializing in unorthodox arts of war. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, as well as open combat in certain situations.[1] The ninja, using covert methods of waging war, were contrasted with the samurai, who had strict rules about honor and combat."

The Ninja was not trained as Assassins. They did intel and surveillance, spy work. Assassination jobs could happen since stealth and assassinations go well hand in hand, but it wasn't the norm.

The Turtles on the other hand comes from the comic book/pop-culture ninja, who wears uniformed single colored Karate gi suits, masks and a straight "katana"

And again I ask where it says that they are EVIL?? Your claim was that they were ALL EVIL they sound like specialized warriors to me, used by both sides, no different than our highly trained specialized soldiers today, who for the most part are damn good human beings. Well see that's debatable, but I'd argue that anyone who kills for a living is evil no matter what they're killing for, it's a matter of how evil (e.g., the Samurai are less evil than ninjas because their conflict is honorable), but good and evil are subjective terms and not absolutes.

Well, as we can all see here, every person has their own interpretation of the TMNT, and I can see the validity in most. Even Andrew and Tristan Jones were disagreeing on the "clan" aspect, two guys who know their turtles. However, just because something is fantasy or a comic book, doesn't mean it's completely illogical. It still needs to have and abide by its own set of rules and logic. That's the difference between good and bad storytelling.

In the end, it is fiction and it can be whatever as long as it makes sense. It would seem Tom's interpretation is emphasizing the family aspect more than past interpretations. Does that delegitimatize the turtles as ninjas? Perhaps a bit, but not completely. But I don't think there is anything inherently contradictory about ninjas who have differing philosophies and ideologies. After all, they are still people with their own personal beliefs. Perhaps Oroku Saki reflected the more traditional mindset (ruthless assassins) and Hamato Yoshi had a different sense of what ninjitsu ought to be utilized for. Or maybe Yoshi realized the attitudes of the traditional ninja wasn't for him through the lessons and consequences of violence beset upon and by him and now uses the skills of the ninja solely to protect himself and his family. Thus, they would be considered ninjas only because they practice ninjitsu while abandoning its ideals (or lack thereof), sort of like a ronin.

I'm glad IDW started with red, as it was a nice nod to the original design, but I prefer the colored bandanas. I'm all for honoring source-material, but colors work to distinguish the turtles in print, plain and simple. In some of the early Mirage colored TBPs, it was very hard to distinguish the turtles when they didn't have weapons. I think my biggest gripe with the early comics is the turtles' lack of individuality, and the colors are just one more little boost on that factor. Some might argue that IDW gives the turtles different skin hues to help distinguish them, and thus they should keep the original red - but remember that the turtles were originally all colored the same shade of green, so SOMETHING has to be sacrificed if we're going to tell them apart!

If this were a debate over an animated series, and we had voice acting to help tell them apart, I might jump to team red, but I think having the colors in colored comics is a good move.

I've never heard of a Ninja clan that wears only eyemasks and belts, anyway. Usually they at least have pants. XP

Even though I've never had trouble telling them apart, I guess I can see why people who do complain about not being able to tell who is who. Even though they have very different personalities, Peter and Ray have given me fits in a few Ghostbusters comics in the past thanks to certain artists' lack of creativity in the character design department.

The right answer... is that there is no right answer. Because it's a comic book based on a premise which is beyond preposterous, and yet a lot of people still take it way too seriously, to the point where they will come up with long and logical arguments - and good ones! - about why the TMNT should either go hardcore red or multi-colored. I both love and hate this. I love how passionate people can be, I hate how empty the cause.

Me? I go with colors. I grew up with that and it's how I see them individually in my mind. Kinda like how the first version of Peter Pan or Santa Claus you see is how you see them your whole life, y'know? I also like how even though they have the same "uniform" they can still be individual. Like ok, even if they were a pro wrestling tag team, they would likely start out wearing all red to show unity as a team, but after just a few months they'd be told to wear individual colors to make them stand out more and so each could become more marketable individually.

It's simple business and it makes logical sense: The TMNT are not and have never been a clan of ninjas, they're fictional comic book characters who were given the title of "ninja" to provide a backdrop for exciting (if somewhat B-movie grade) stories and colorful characters. Four different colored headbands for the main characters means, statistically, a much greater chance for members of the demographic to form a personal connection with one of the four, and in turn buy more merchandise. Untold numbers of TMNT fans who became fans from the cartoons formed their initial bond with a favorite turtle based primarily on color. Not all, but very, very many, especially younger fans. Marketing is all about subtle manipulation, or in wrestling lingo, "they're working you". From a purely marketing standpoint, what reason on earth would they have to actually keep them all wearing red? To make a fictional story more "authentic"? To be more "respectful" to source material older than 70% of the fans?

Whenever this topic comes up, I always picture the creators behind some curtain, laughing, like "Can you believe what people give a sh*t about?" Because I'm pretty sure we all care more than they do.

I promise you that Eastman and Laird didn't give one sh*t about historical accuracy or otherwise when they called them ninjas, it was probably more like "Y'know what's neat? Ninjas. Ninjas kick ass." If they did the book today it'd be zombies or vampires or something.

There's lots of good arguments for both preferences, but I find that a lot of people who prefer all red take certain things a bit too seriously in general and that pushes me the other way.

The whole, "You wore red while you were looking for Raph, to remind you of him, since red's his favorite color...which I'll only tell you now... but now, here's masks that reflect your favorite colors...when you were humans in Feudal Japan." So if (or when) Splinter goes missing will they wear the red again because it will remind them of their master's red kimono? It's a lame reason to have the all red, then yank it away.

There's various scenarios that would more or less amicably return them to the red bandannas with enough thought.

Just off the top of my head: the stakes are high, Splinter's been abducted, all of the other Turtles are down or otherwise incapacitated... none of them listened to Raphael's plan, who leaves them to their own plan in a typical Raph Rage moment. Then when things look grim, Raphael enters the fray, getting nearly killed while saving the lives of his brothers and rescuing Splinter... and then slips into a coma from blood loss. When he wakes up weeks later, all of his brothers are wearing red again, both to honor him and their brotherhood.

If they did that, I'd be perfectly fine with it, as it'd make sense for the story, and would be a touching moment for the brothers!

The multicolored bandannas definitely have a cheese and marketability factor (at times). The way they switched to the colored bandanas was sudden, yet I felt that nostalgia tingle when it happened (at first). Looking back, the inclusion of the red bandannas in the series does some like a gimmicky ploy. They kind of "worked us" (as someone mentioned earlier in the thread) and that comes across as cheap. It would be cool to see the red come back (not probable) or at least have em switch back to them for certain missions... it'll have that "sh*t just got real!" factor to it.

[at times it was hard to distinguish between the turtles, but I certainly did not mind thinking deeply enough to figure out/know who was who]

There's something I've been wanting to say for awhile.

People who want all-red bandanas, you're right. They should have the same color of eye masks. Famous historical ninja Hattori Hanzo once said this:

http://s15.postimage.org/s9q5rupx3/hattorihanzo.jpg

:trolleye:

Honestly, if you're that worried about them being more like a real ninja clan, they need to be walking around in human clothes hiding in plain sight a lot more often; saving the stereotypical ninja stealth stuff for when they're doing a night raid on Stockgen or something... which more calls for dark blue than bright red. In either instance, things that could trace you back to your clan (like matching eye masks or footprint symbols) would be the last thing you'd want to carry with you as a ninja.

If you want them to wear red because you think it looks cooler or whatever, then fine. No problem. But I've had just about enough of this "they're a clan so they need the same color" bunk.

Andrew NDB
01-26-2012, 02:16 PM
The right answer... is that there is no right answer.

I agree!

Wait, what?

Because it's a comic book based on a premise which is beyond preposterous, and yet a lot of people still take it way too seriously, to the point where they will come up with long and logical arguments - and good ones! - about why the TMNT should either go hardcore red or multi-colored.

Sounds like someone's treading dangerously close to Crisler's Law (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=crisler%27s+law).

I both love and hate this. I love how passionate people can be, I hate how empty the cause.

But calling the cause "empty" is trivializing the whole other side of debate.

I also like how even though they have the same "uniform" they can still be individual.

Me too. I like that they can still think for themselves, have unique personalities, body types, faces, and I think even different weapons.

Like ok, even if they were a pro wrestling tag team,

What a horrible way to start a point. I'm almost scared to read any further.

they would likely start out wearing all red to show unity as a team, but after just a few months they'd be told to wear individual colors to make them stand out more and so each could become more marketable individually.

Yes, in a universe where Splinter becomes Vince McMahon then certainly, that's a perfectly reasonable conclusion to come to.

It's simple business and it makes logical sense: The TMNT are not and have never been a clan of ninjas,

But they have been in-story and specifically mentioned as a ninja clan in the Mirage source material. We've been over this, this is old hat.

they're fictional comic book characters who were given the title of "ninja" to provide a backdrop for exciting (if somewhat B-movie grade) stories and colorful characters.

No one is debating the "marketing standpoint" -- the whole genesis behind the rainbow bandannas was to help small children buy the toys... this is well established.

The question is, why do we need to be worried about the "marketing standpoint" for an IDW comic book?

To make a fictional story more "authentic"?

Yes. Because by your own admission, it's a pretty far-out concept and could use whatever little bit of grounding that could be afforded reasonably.

To be more "respectful" to source material older than 70% of the fans?

If that comes by attention to the former point, then sure. If not, then I wouldn't worry about it.

People who want all-red bandanas, you're right. They should have the same color of eye masks. Famous historical ninja Hattori Hanzo once said this:

http://s15.postimage.org/s9q5rupx3/hattorihanzo.jpg

You know, Hanzo, you're wrong. Multi-colored bandannas are perfectly sound ninja attire and are all the rage this year -- why, I just came from Honshu and the stories are spreading like wildfire about the ninjas with "almost all the colors of the rainbow" that assassinated the Mizuki house. In fact, after I heard these stories, I was passing by a Pride parade and got scared sh*tless by all the rainbows, half expecting a shuriken to come out of one of them and catch me between the eyes.

I kind of look at it like this:

What do the Turtles NOT need to wear, ever? A mask -- they are clearly giant Turtles and the little bit of cloth they wrap around their eyes isn't fooling anybody. OK, so why do they do it?

Going back to the very beginning they do it for the same reason as the uniformity seen in the Foot Clan's "soldiers" -- to represent that they're from the same clan. Any kind of argument about, "They wear bandannas to give them individuality!" -- apart from being nonsensical (what kind of ninja that could be taken seriously would be actively worried about being "different"?) -- goes right out the window when you know that the only reason they were introduced in the first place is for this reason:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sU-Dl0XGaGI/ThS48hrWmOI/AAAAAAAAAtM/Mu3DFrngDCo/s1600/Bill%2BTom%2BNinja%2BTurtles.jpg

If you want them to wear red because you think it looks cooler or whatever, then fine. No problem. But I've had just about enough of this "they're a clan so they need the same color" bunk.

I think it's more "if they're any kind of a ninja clan we're not supposed to be laughing at -- and yes, at, not with -- then yeah, they probably need the same color."

You'd think you'd place higher priority on pants if you want them to not be laughed at.

EDIT: Oh, wait. I already made that joke. Anywho...

Though all I've heard at the local comics places is, "We're out of stock on that. Most of them go to subscriptions and the rest fly out the door," on the day an issue gets released. I haven't heard anything about the comic being taken less seriously.

For tradition sake I like the multi-colored mask. Its an all ages thing not ten and up red mask in the comics. If I think of the TMNT I think of four different mask colors. When I see a picture of the TMNT with a red mask I automatically think Raphael even if its a Mirage type depiciton.

I like the fact it evolved beyond the one-shot and from Mirage itself. Its simply the way I think and see the turtles with four different mask not all red and leaving me to play "Guess Who".

Ah, so you're an all-red fan!

Oh.

I wasn't aware the lack of rainbow colors on the bandannas automatically denotes all-ages or not.

If I think of the TMNT I think of four different mask colors. When I see a picture of the TMNT with a red mask I automatically think Raphael even if its a Mirage type depiciton.

I don't believe that how your own history colors your going-forward experience with bandanna colors should be something that the "ideal" version of the Turtles ought to be punished as a result of.

I like the fact it evolved beyond the one-shot and from Mirage itself. Its simply the way I think and see the turtles with four different mask not all red and leaving me to play "Guess Who".

I'm curious, there seems to be this ruckus brought up time and again by the rainbow fandanglers... can any of you quantify this? Because you have the power to do so.

No, really, I'm interested... take a few minutes, take a picture with your camera phone or scan the panel or panel(s) from the Mirage books that confuse you as to who's who. I genuinely want to see which panels confuse you.

I don't disagree... they should probably wear that. But they don't.

who REALLY wears headbands with eye holes??? The closest I can think of is Zorro...

Again, I don't disagree. But if it's between a unified color and a diversified rainbow spectrum, I tend to think that the unified color trumps the rainbow every time.

Honestly, being strictly pragmatic about things, them wearing no bandannas make the most sense... bandanna or not, no one is going to be fooled into believing they're just some random guy -- those heads, hands/feet, shells, and skin color are kinda giveaways about who they are.

The question you have to ask is -- and try to put yourself in their shoes here, really imagine you were trained since, you know, forever in a sewer to be a ninja in your family's clan to one day kill a guy -- why did they put on the bandannas at all? You have to ask the question, since the bandannas are as much a part of the TMNT as the weapons they carry, visually. There are several answers you can arrive at:

A) "They want to be different from one another, and express themselves!"

B) "They want to show unity in their shared ninja clan."

C) "They had favorite colors as children and they decide when they're performing their ninja duties that's an appropriate time/place to adorn themselves with them prominently."

D) "They want to confuse their enemies in battle, disguising their numbers."

Given that scenario, which of those answers compute and which of them sound ridiculous, and of the ones that compute do "all-red bandannas" or "rainbow bandannas" tend to make the most sense for them?

Valid point. In a rapid battle amongst the darkness, the enemy wouldn't be able to tell if it was 4 Turtles or 10... kinda like people usually think Batman is 'everywhere at once' when he sneaks up on a gang of thugs.

But yeah... they'd be even more stealthy if they dressed in black dogis... I mean, black blends better than green.... I mean, if we take it from a human perspective... what ninja clan would run around dressed in green gis???

I think I was the first person to cite confusion in my own readings. To make it clear, I said that I had a little bit of trouble and had to go back and read again during the sparring scene in #5 just to make sure I knew who was who. A bit more effort to identify the Turtles at a point before Raph showed off his skills would've been nice. I also said that something like this probably won't happen again because now they're all wearing different colors.

How this became, "Now we don't have to deal with all this constant confusion," is beyond me.

Sadly,no. If the red is brought back I am dropping it. Red symbolizes the turtles how they first started out as a gritty settlng and the fact they kill. Its like how Batman started out but he evolved to be many things. One thing that sticks is the fact he DOESN'T KILL! The TMNT are the same way. Its also the fact it stuck to the the Mirage Comics and never went out of the comics. The mutli-colored mask have become definitive. Outside of this sub-section of this MB most people associate the TMNT as orange=Mike, blue=Leo, Don=purple.

Outside of this board I never met anyone who liked them all looking like Raph. I was shocked people actually liked it. Its also
that the four different colored mask are overwhelming more popular overall no matter what a poll like this in one sub-section of one MB says. The different color mask are apart of who the turtles are and for it to be said any other way is ignorant! Its been apart of everything except the black and white comics for a reason.

True. In Batman#1 he swore never to again. The character started out one way and quickly evolved to the point that killing is against his philosophy. The TMNT started that way in the black and white comics but elsewhere its not the case.

The skin color tints change each time its put to use so trying to remember which one is a certain tone each time around is tricky. The mask are different colors now so I am satisfied.

It's really a question for Fred Wolf and/or Playmates. And since Raphael in that series didn't correspond to anything "in line with the grittier Mirage version of the Turtles," the only answer I think we can come to is "They picked him at random to keep the red."

Though it could have been as simple as a note from Kevin to Fred Wolf about, "Make sure Raphael's bandanna stays red. He's my favorite." Though seeing as how Fred Wolf didn't listen to Kevin/Peter about much of anything I wouldn't put too much stock in that.

Both work for me, but I do like the fact that maybe having it multicolored helped to accentuate their individuality amongst one another. Jester, not to pick on you but doesn't the fact that you have to "guess" lend some validity to the complaint that without weapons present or names mentioned it can be difficult to visually distinguish between the turtles? Shouldn't you just be able to tell? If it's left to interpretation and not something inherit (i.e. the art itself), doesn't that mean the turtles do indeed look very similar? At best, the differences are subtle, and you can't blame a person for feeling it's too subtle.

Again, admitting that someone has a point doesn't mean you agree with them. It just displays a sincere attempt to understand someone else's perspective. Isn't that, after all, what a discussion is? Otherwise you're really just waiting for someone to agree with you. I've said before that I prefer "red" and I still do, but I also still feel as though there are those who cling to their opinion so tightly that they can't see that someone who doesn't agree with them can have a point too.

well i am i think that this comic was best with the red and i have always like the red best but thats me. when that said i think the way they introduces the coloured headbands was very good, that they had to deserve the colors and weapon. so now i i just have to wait for issue nr 6. man i love being a turtle :)

If you drop the book just because they switch back you are not much of a Tmnt fan. More like an ''80s toon fanboy''. Ya know, the kind of people that like to pretend Eastman and Laird don't exist and sweep the source comics under the rug.

And on the Batman thing, your argument has no grounds. The Tmnt killed in the first ever incarnation. The original comic. They DO kill. Deal with it. Your love for a childrens show doesn't mean anything. The creators had the turtles kill when they had to. That is just the way it is. Saying ''They all look like Raph'' is very Noobish by the way.

And say what you want about the poll, it is what it is. Don't get mad because the ''real turtles'' aren't winning in the poll numbers.

i have to back this member up if you choose to drop the book because they change back you are not a real fan.my first romance with the turtles was the cartoon and the archie turtles but i fell in love with the red headbands from the first time i ever seen them and i was happy to see that they did it on the idw series and in my book that the way i want it to stay and keep the color to the children comic, but i will never stop reading the comic because of the change.it was just a bump on the road on my perfect image of the brother in green and i go on.not cut them off :tneutral:

Jester, not to pick on you but doesn't the fact that you have to "guess" lend some validity to the complaint that without weapons present or names mentioned it can be difficult to visually distinguish between the turtles? Shouldn't you just be able to tell? If it's left to interpretation and not something inherit (i.e. the art itself), doesn't that mean the turtles do indeed look very similar? At best, the differences are subtle, and you can't blame a person for feeling it's too subtle.o.

No. The book was black and white, mutli-colored headbands wouldn't have helped.

No. The book was black and white, mutli-colored headbands wouldn't have helped.

I'm not advocating for colored masks in any comic. I'm just referring to how there are some who claim it is not difficult at all (in my opinion overstating the case) to distinguish between the turtles in any given comic, even when no weapons are present or names are mentioned. Black and white or not, the turtles look similar. In a colored comic, I don't begrudge anyone else for liking the colored masks as a practical identifying tool. I don't prefer it but the point remains that it can be reasonably difficult to tell the difference; that scene in "Nobody's Fool" was my example. Naturally a preference for colored masks is moot in a black & white comic. Maybe for the better...

Jester
01-31-2012, 07:49 PM
Exactly. It doesn't really matter or detract from enjoying the issue, but it would still be nice to know who was who. Jester, my interpretation reversed Raph and Mike, but I assumed Leo and Don were the ones you thought. I only thought Raph was in the 3-D glasses because someone is wearing 3D glasses again in "All Hallows Thieves," and I guessed Mike was the one who went downstairs, so I assumed Raph just like the 3D glasses.
See, I was going by the "Can't we go after Barney Miller is over?" line. Sounded like Mikey.

But in the end, it really doesn't matter. Maybe the artists should have made them more distinct, but when it matters, we know who's who.

And Matches why am I getting guff for the "I dare anyone to show me a panel when they are confused." That weren't me.... :P I just feel that tradition has it that "original" TMNT comics have red bandanas.

Haha I told you Jester I didn't mean to pick on you! And I'm not looking to pick on anyone. If anything, I'm just trying to see if I can make the point clear to those who have been saying otherwise. I consider myself a fairly bright guy so I'm just honestly confused when people claim how easy it is to distinguish between the turtles. I get what you're trying to say, but it's not exactly profound, is it?

"Is there a lot less trouble tellin' who's who with the multi-colors?"

Yes. But...

"Is there a lot of trouble tellin' who's who without them?"

No. Not really.

Well yeah, it's definitely not profound by any means, but I guess what I don't get is that there's no acknowledgment at all on the point (profound or otherwise) that it can be a bit troublesome to tell who's who. You say "No. Not really" and that's fine, but you also asked for an example, presumably to explain why or at least to comment on. I'm not trying to antagonize anyone or create any drama, but if there really is an easy way to tell who is who in the examples provided, I'm honestly interested. It would certainly make some of my read-thrus a lot easier without looking for a weapon or waiting for someone to mention a name. I'm not against the idea that I'm just missing something and that I'm just being oblivious, but I get the feeling people just don't want to concede even one point as valid to the "colored" side.

So far one panel has been produced (though only spoken of, really), and right away someone was able to pretty much figure out who was who.

I will go ahead and say the odds are pretty good that the panels you can produce of legitimate "I don't know who's who on this panel!!!" are probably about equivalent to the panels I can produce from, say, the Archie comics where the Turtles' bandannas were accidentally colored the wrong color.

That sounds like a begrudging acknowledgement that there are legitimate examples (I'll leave the actual # of for another day!), so I'll take it in the interest of moving on! :D Also, the idea that introducing different colored masks leaves an opening for miscoloring and thus causing confusion it was meant to prevent is a legitimate point that had not even occurred to me until Spengler brought it up in his review of #6.

Another thing that hit me is that if they ever go back and do issues that take place continuity-wise before #5, it's going to be tricky paying attention knowing when to use all-red and colored, leaving it open for more mistakes, which is another drawback of introducing both into the series... In the future, I hope there isn't going to be a lot of:

"This takes before issue #5 because _____"
"But why are their masks colored then?"
"Aw, crap!"

Mr._Mutant_Man

I guess I like the multi-colored for nostalgic reasons, plus it makes it easier to tell the Turtles apart.

But I really like the all red look, too. It makes more sense, and helps distinguish the comic version from the cartoons.

So if "either one" was an option, I would have picked that.

I wouldn't mind seeing them switch back and forth, although I don't know how that would make sense, besides going back in time.

I must be really easy to please 'cause I like them either way. It probably has something to do with my being introduced to the characters through the Fred Wolf show and the original action figures as a kid. I will say the darker tones IDW uses for the headbands than say the cartoons/movies looks better IMO.

At least the colored bandanas were implimented into the story in a way that didn't make Splinter look like a guy who couldn't even tell his own sons apart. (http://mutantooze.org/wiki/?p=1687) =p

IDW's Splinter seems more concerned with just having his family back, and training them to survive so history won't repeat itself.

That is a good point and yet another that shows a bit of inconsistency in the reasoning for the introduction of the colored masks. Although at this point, I don't really want to know their Japanese names. Giving them official Japanese names just further solidifies their "human back story" which, as I've expressed before, I would like to downplayed (if not written out completely) as much as possible...

How many people currently read comic books?

How many of those read a comic that isn't put out by the big two?

I'd say most of the small number of people inclined to pick up the IDW TMNT book are aware of the Mirage version.

Sales have been good by IDW's standards so far and the TMNT have all had red bandanas so it clearly hasn't had a deliterious affect on sales and I've heard no complaints of readers not being able to tell the turtles apart so far.

I don't know funny man, did you really think there were four Raphs on the NES game box art or did you wonder why Leo, Mike and Don were all wearing red?

Didja think it looked kinda cool? I certainly did. Seeing the whole image in a magazine review of the game I was even intrigued by the Krang-like aliens shooting ray guns at the turtles.

As a kid it I was used to sometimes seeing Batman with an oval and blue cape and cowl and sometimes with a regular bat symbol and black cape and cowl. My first few Spider-Man comics he interchanged with his classic red and blue suit to the cloth version of the black suit.

Even characters that had a "set" look like He-Man differed slightly in the various versions. Compare the very basic look of He-Man had in the Filmation cartoon with the more detailed action figure version.

As adults we tend to overthink things. As a kid I accepted that a different version often looked slightly different and often came with a different story and feel. As long as the characters were recognisable it didn't matter.

Only now I finally finished reading the comics (you know, international edition getting delayed and stuff), and even tho I've always been pretty hardcore supporting the red masks, I was ready to give IDW a chance. But, I'm sorry, it seems just plain wrong. The explanation looks improvised, and it doesn't justify the change at all. I'll keep buying the comics no matter what, as I've done for many many years, but I'm quite disappointed by a few things (reincarnation being the main point). Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a fun read and the script is very well driven, but reincarnation and red bandanas are definitely not for me.

I would have liked all the TMNT to have red masks the whole run through, but it's cool either way. Although the way it was introduced was kinda lame. The turtles could be giant walking penises and you'd be fine with it.

Who wouldn't?

But would the penises all be wearing red, or multicolor?

Well if they went multi-colored it would explain why Raph is so angry all the time.

I'm glad you have magic blinders that allow you to accept whatever crap is given to you but not everyone is that gifted. All you've told me here is that you don't care about aesthetic. The turtles could be giant walking penises and you'd be fine with it.

More power to you honestly. Wish I was that easily swayed. Not a joke, I'm jealous.

That's out of line, bub. I have no "magic blinders," I do not accept whatever crap is given to me (case in point; The Next Mutation), and different-colored masks are not crap or giant walking penises. Your compliment is incredibly backhanded and you have been reported.

Yes; in fact I do have my limits. They were just about breeched by this (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K0pC5VSZkss/TxqQm72A7CI/AAAAAAAACfY/07xoA93DKtQ/s1600/shell-shock.jpg).

Fortunately, it was tentative, and now he looks like this (http://cdn.bleedingcool.net/wp-content/uploads//2012/02/turtles4.jpg?d47549).

What's weird is that the two aren't actually that different. It's the little things that make all the difference, though. Making him darker and giving him a scar help a lot. Yet somehow I don't think that latter render matches the toy we've been shown.

The point is, though, that there's a big difference between Turtles wearing different-colored masks or having different-looking feet, and Shredder looking like he has breasts. The first two don't make anything less badass. They're different, but that difference does not make them look weaker.

Welcome to the internet. Not to be rude but you're gonna need thicker skin then that to survive around here. Yes I was poking fun at you but I assumed the joke that followed made it obvious my intentions weren't malicious. As Arnold would say "Relax, you'll live longer."

Yeah, these def would have been sweet if the turtles wore these on some ''special'' missions or something.

Definitely. That would be a cool universe pull for IDW to whip out. Say if they were to infiltrate Shredders lair/headquarters/etc for the first time.

Without analyzing my rationale, I'd vote all red for comics stories...even though I'm probably partial to the colored bandanas in general. Largely for nostalgic reasons, I like the look of the colored bandana. When i visualize the turtles in my mind, I largely see a fusion of cartoon and comics elements with the grittier character aesthetics of the comics married with the colored bandanas from the comics universes. Largely this: http://tcplanet.thetechnodrome.com/JimLawson.jpg

That being said, I've always sort of distinguished the comics as featuring all red bandanas and think that they make more sense on a practical level. For the more involved storytelling inherent to comics, that makes a difference. So, yeah, a tentative vote for team red. The stories are what matter, though, and I wouldn't stop reading purely on the basis of any aesthetic change.

^ This.
In response to the last sentence, I don't think any of the "Red Team" has said we'd drop the title because of the change. So far there's only been 1 person say they'd drop the title, and that was if they went back to all red.

I think it depends on the artist. I didn't care for Duncan's all-red Turtles, but if anyone else from Lawson to Berger to Donney to Eastman was drawing, I'd prefer all red.

Seriously guys; is it that big a deal? I don't care; just like I don't care if the Nickelodeon Turtles have three toes or that Nickelodeon April is 16 or that Nickelodeon Splinter looks like a black-and-white llama. It's not like it ruins anything for me.

You've got a good point, dude!

I prefer the multi-colored masks but I hate it when they have colored knee/elbow pads and wrist bands. Brown works just dandy for me.

Welcome to the internet. Not to be rude but you're gonna need thicker skin then that to survive around here.

No; welcome to a specific board with specific rules. Maybe it's true you didn't break any, but the "Anything goes on the Internet" fallacy gets thrown at me a lot, and I'm sick of hearing it.

Yes I was poking fun at you but I assumed the joke that followed made it obvious my intentions weren't malicious. As Arnold would say "Relax, you'll live longer."

I'll admit I laughed at the penis joke, and I'm glad your intentions aren't malicious, but I'd like to point out that when I first posted in this thread, I made my own joke (about how I wanted them to wear pink beercan hats with hearts on them) that didn't target or make fun of any specific user. When I use that sort of courtesy, even when I feel that the people I'm addressing are overreacting over something I find petty, I don't appreciate being retorted with a direct accusation of me having magic blinders.

Where's the "Both Equally" option?
I feel about like this, I don't mind the multi-colored masks in toys and cartoons and media spun off from those cartoons, like the Archie and DW comics series.

But... I feel the main comic line should maintain the red masks.

But that's solely my opinion/preference.

Right next to the "No point in voting at all" option.
