Looks like #13, 16, and #18 of Vol. 1 won't be "skipped" for long, they'll just be released in a separate format:

http://www.amazon.ca/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Classics/dp/1613772343/ref=reg_hu-rd_dp_img

The original stories of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles come roaring back to shelves - in all-new, full color - with the line of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics trade paperbacks! Volume 1 contains Mirage Studios' issues #13, 16, and 18 - showcasing favorite tales like "The Peoples Choice," "A TMNT Time Tale," and "The Shell of the Dragon."

They're going to be in color...for #18 that doesn't surprise me as that WAS released in color back in the day, but were the other two?

Hm, only 3 issues per trade? Without doing much thinking that's what, 11-12 trades for the non-Kevin/Peter Volume 1 stuff?

Oh please. #16, while not your preferred blood bath/swear fest/beer party, is harmless fun and not even compatible to the ridiculousness of the second two Martin stories.

And I'm for them printing the issues in order and not skipping any, so this'll do.

I guess that much is true.

Totally not against them reprinting this stuff, I'd just hate to see it come at the expense of the better stuff later on -- that's my only thing.

What makes you say that? They're releasing these in little spurts, to keep the order, but to keep the Eastman and Laird "canon" intact. What makes you think they'll stop because they're releasing the issues in chronological order?

If material like the Martin or Hedden-McWeeney stuff is put out there and sales not-so-coincidentally drop to levels that no longer justify future "filling in the blanks" TPBs. I'd hate to see "The River," or "Twilight of the Ring," or "Halls of Lost Legends" or "Leatherhead Too" be casualties.

I tend to agree with Andrew on this. It seems like an odd choice to start off with. (A vast understatement)

Wouldn't it be a better idea to try and group the non Eastman/Laird stories together by creator. Put Dooney's "The Peoples Choice", "Dreams of Stone" and "Masks" Parts 1 - 3 in the same trade.

Same with Veitch's "The River" and couple it with "Sky Highway" . You could probably group together Dan Berger's "Leatherhead Too" with his Tales V. 2 stories featuring LH and so on.

Then group any overflow together. Maybe try and tie them with a theme or something.

Yes but isn't Leatherhead, Too and many of of those other stories mentioned "canon". I'd assume that Dooney's The Peoples Choice is because it was later adapted by Laird in the 4Kids series. I'm sure they will be grouped in Vol 3 (or later) of the Ultimate Collection. I see these as "Well we've gotta do them all...just in case, but they aren't part of the 'story'."

EDIT: Wait...why is The Peoples Choice in this release....I'll show myself out.

Nobody cares about what Laird said is and isn't canon anymore. It's up to IDW and their legal department what they can and can't reprint.

That's pretty much what I suggested at the IDW boards (pretty much a TMNT Presents: A.C. Farley type deal which would also allow shorts and back-up strips to be reprinted as well) and while Bobby said that was an approach being considered, it looks like they went the chronological route. I have the same worries as it's almost like inviting the same decline in popularity Volume 1 experienced when these issues were published the FIRST time. At least with creator-centric collections they can prioritize the stories that stick closely with the tone of the Eastman/Laird issues whose sales IDW is so pleased with so far. Makes more sense to me... Then again, perhaps IDW is going with a cheaper investment with these reprints (hence the paperback and small price tag) that sales is less of an issue to continue these volumes... Hopefully we'll hear some sort of official word from IDW soon on their plans on this soon.

wow, I for one am glad that they keep pushing turtles comics so intensively..;)with the archie reprint and the first idw material around the corner to be reprinted in tpb this is the third(!) turtles comic book in the near future not counting ultimate collection vol 2 and a possible second print run of ult.c. vol 1...truly a reason to cry out:COWABUNGA, MOTHERF....!!!!...and later worry about if I like everything they chose to go into that collection...I'd say, don't worry, amigos, these books seem to pop out of the ground and people won't shy away if they don't like one of all these books so much...with turtles they got a huge hit on their hands like we witness at the moment...the good stuff will come!!;)

just checked and I am only missing issue #13 from this book...;(but now I don't understand if they do it chronologicly, why not start with issue 12?

They're not going by what anyone said was canon. These "Ultimate Collections" are rounding up issues that Eastman and/or Laird drew or wrote. Whether collaboratively or not.

Oh please. #16, while not your preferred blood bath/swear fest/beer party,

Maybe I need to refresh myself on Mirage comics, but what story really does fit that description besides Bodycount?

Even the first issue is relatively tame compared to what else is out there in comics. It only seems "extreme" now because of how much slapstick and silliness was in the cartoon.

I guess this means the next oversized hard cover will probably be Shades of Gray and City at War....probably split into two or more volume's.

I assume #16 is here simply because they're going in order. 13, 16, and 18 are the only 3 skipped so far in the Eastman collections.

I also assume Volume 2 will get the oversized hardcover treatment after City at War.

Yeah, I must admit having a very soft spot for TMNT Vol. 1 #16. I fondly remember reading it for the very first time on NinjaTurtles.com back in the spring/summer of 2009.

But I already own all three of these issues via the TPBs that Mirage put out 20 years ago (and I own #17 twice since it was also in Eastman's 20th Anniversary book), so I'm not in hurry to get this unless the quality of the scanning/printing is as least as good as the earlier collections, though I obviously want to support TMNT and have the later stuff reprinted.

Though the likelihood of having #24-26 and 30 reprinted is pretty nil, since Rick Veitch never signed away the rights to his TMNT work. And I have no clue if Viacom and/or IDW would give Rick a deal he would consider better than what Mirage offered him, so we'll see how things pan out.

Well, this isn't my ideal way of seeing the stories collected, but I'm still thrilled that IDW is getting them out there PERIOD. The more product, the better.

Granted, this could create some confusion if they decide to go back and release everything in chronological collections.

Their Transformers collections are a mindboggling mess. First they released each arc in individual trades, then they released Best Of arcs focused on certain writers and artists, then they released deluxe hardcovers that collect each miniseries in publication order, and NOW they're releasing deluxe hardcovers of every issue in a "suggested reading order".

It's confusing for anybody trying to just get into IDW's Transformers series and, well, it's STILL pretty confusing for those in the know, as well.

I'm rather of the opinion that they should release the material as straight-forwardly as possible the first time around so as to make things easier on consumers as they can.

Regardless, I'll repeat that I'm pleased the stuff is getting released PERIOD. It's been the better part of two decades since ANY of this material has seen print in any format. Hopefully newcomers will be able to figure out how IDW is setting up their trades and enjoy the material.

All very true. It's definitely an exciting time right now I think to be a turtles fan! While it's not my preferred method, IDW is being very good to the TMNT franchise, I think. And if the quality of the current ongoing stays strong, I'm sure this will help build up interest for these reprints as well, so there really isn't too much to worry about. Just all a game of wait and see for now.

They didn't even fix the misspelling of Michelangelo's name on the "retro-variant," why would they go out of their way to change the colors of the masks in the reprints? In a new series, anything goes, but with reprinted fan favorites, it's a different story.

Were the Archie reprints in black & white? Just curious...

Well, I meant go out of their way as in to change something that doesn't need to be changed. There is nothing calling for the masks to be changed into the rainbow colors; the IDW ongoing series is very much a separate series. Just because they brought those colors into that series doesn't mean they are going to needlessly impose that on everything every chance they get.

But it's silly to jump to the conclusion that they're going to do the same thing in a series they're not actively working on.
Just because they did something in the series they actually have an active part in creating doesn't mean they're going to give "Michaelangelo" and orange bandana, orange knee pads, and photoshop an initialized belt buckle on him.

Its ideal for me. Its too expensive to give everything an oversized hardcover, so saving the "deluxe" treatment for only Eastman/Laird issues is fine.

And the best part is #13, 16 and 18 are being released right around the time the third collection comes out (#12-#21), so nothing is skipped and it all fits right in. The fact that they're even including the bizarre #16 shows IDW isn't skipping any issues for the hell of it.

I do kinda wish Dooney's issue was including in the hardcover, but I suppose seeing it in color instead will make up for it.

I'm not crazy about this trades content, nothing against it coming out. But I do hate the one issue. But if IDW is really committed to this, then by all means do it. The fact its gonna be in color makes it a little more appealing. But the page count pretty much matches the typical IDW trade, 4-5 issues. But since the Mirage stuff were longer comics, thats why we get 3 issues.
I agree too that some sortta creator/theme is the more logical approach for the collections, but whatever. Their calling them "classics", so what the hell. The Ult. Vol. 3 HC is cool too. Ending it off with the Eastman & Laird solo/last works. Did Peter Laird really contribute to the annecdotes? I don't have the Ult. Book 1 HC so I don 't know.
Is IDW really doing an Archie TMNT trade/collection of any sort? Thought I'd ask as its seems to be mentioned by others.

Agreed, though the damage is kind of done at this point... in for a penny, in for a pound, after putting out #16. It's just a pity they don't include more issues per trade... if there were more quality issues per trade to offset the silliness of the Martin stuff it wouldn't be as detrimental.

#16 was still pretty standalone though. When that issue first came out it didn't seem like it was part of a trilogy. I remember reading it for the first time back in the early 2000's and not knowing there were two sequels to it. People also feel that issue was somewhat enjoyable, unlike the other two.

I can see them skipping them, at least at first.

Peter Laird did indeed contribute to the annotations, though considerably less than Kevin Eastman, and not for every issue. The annotations sections are interesting enough to make the (re)purchase worthwhile, I think. Eastman's annotations are pretty hefty which makes sense since he's working fairly closely with IDW at this point.

IDW also is release Archie material starting with the first 3 issue adaption of the first season of the Fred Wolf cartoon. Looks like they are starting to reveal their game plan, releasing TMNT from 3 different fronts (Archie, Eastman/Laird, and "guest artist" Mirage). This is pretty encouraging, I think, though a more official word on their plans for this year would be nice.

I only cherished the Mirage comics TMNT. The Archie stuff I never ever got into despite the old cartoon coming along back then. But in my humble sense of wanting to diversify in TMNT readings, I will most likely try out the reprints after the initial 3 issue adaptation. I did get the Mirage Future Tense trade and didn't mind most of it. Its just as most TMNT fans have stated in one other thread or two, Mirage TMNT stories really doesn't amount to a whole lot after Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 4. Especially since the last 2 vol.'s were so slow and stretched out in story pacing. We coulda had more stories if they put the heart into it. The two Tales of TMNT series were of little much more extra stories. Most didn't really mean too much in the general overall canon. The Image Vol.3 run was really the highlight and maybe Bodycount. What TMNT action should be more like.
So the IDW TMNT title and any TMNTA reprints could be good for me.

I gather the only reason we're getting an Archie trade is because the book is already done. It came out back in 2009. All they're doing is scrubbing off the "25th anniversary" logo and that's it.

If they start putting together NEW Archie trades, I imagine it will take a while.

Yeah that's a good point Cybercubed. It may be another 6-9 months after the 1st Archie trade before we see another one.

Its no secret that the TMNT property has been very successful for IDW already, its their top selling book, and the 1st collected edition they made sold out at the distributor level while toting a pretty hefty price (very much worth it imo), how long do you think it'll be before we see one of the previous comic incarnations of the Turtles continued? They have done it for GI JOE Real American Hero which continues the original Marvel GI JOE run, as well as for the upcoming continuation of the original Trans Formers Marvel comic. One would assume they would try the same with TMNT if the popularity continues. I assume 99% of fans would love to see volume 4 continued, but that would all depend on Laird's willinginess to work for IDW.

Realistically what series do you see a better chance of getting continued? Will Peter come around so Mirage can be continued, or do you see the Archie series getting the nod and continued? I know a lot of fans felt Archie never really had a proper ending that left them feeling the story was continued.

HOWEVER, we do plan to release those issues found in the Ultimate Editions on an individual, month by month basis, as stand alone floppies that are colored. The idea being if you want the 'pure, unfiltered' Mirage early stories, you go to the Ultimate Collection. But if you want something new, at a lower price point, there's the floppies, hopefully covering everyone.

Well, I guess this means some more people will be discovering the Mirage books.

What I don't get is if the stuff from the Eastman/Laird collections will be re-released in "floppies" form, wouldn't that be risking too much reprinting just for the sake of it?

I'd rather IDW continually put out new trades then already re-releasing stuff in different formats. Does anyone really want to buy issues #1-11 again after they have the oversized hardcovers?

They did this with Marvels Transformers into floppies again and that didn't last very long, and they weren't even in chronological order of the issue numbers. Just random. That even got a trade collection for its first half. Has IDW done this with any other title? GI Joe didn't even get that. I know Image is doing it Walking Dead Weekly tho. Its seems to me like a waste of paper too. They should just focus on the TMNT trades line. Why inject all the resources on the reprint of floppies and then the sales don't look good later on and then IDW evaluates the situation under the wrong idea of thier own doing in the first place? Seriously how many comic stores are gonna commit to this? Its a waste of retailer spending when customers can go look for the Mirage back issues. I don't think its a good idea. For these to be in color maybe the only reason to bother. But thats useless too until they go past TMNT #11, 'cause them old First Comics TMNT color trades had those in color and the Leo solo. So we've seen that before. Rapheal was colored in the Eastman Heavy Metal TMNT 25 trade.

Yes. I do. And it's a smart thing for IDW to do. Maybe some people never checked out the Mirage comics and don't wanna blow $30-$50 on an oversized hardcover so, they pay $3.99 at the comic shop, like it, decide to get the next one, then they go and buy the ''Ultimate'' edition. Makes sense to me. Besides, for the collectors it's a good thing. That's probably the philosophy from a business standpoint. And it will most likey work.

And they will be in color, which is different than most are used to seeing the original issues in.
If they come with badass new covers and the new interior colors look good: yes.

Hell to the yes. Since Kevin did most of those early covers I'm hoping he will '' remaster'' them properly this time. Doing the layout the same as the original but with his modern style of drawing the turtles.

All in all, It's gonna be a great, expensive year!:D

Yeah, I may be enticed... #50's rework of #1's cover is still one of the coolest covers. An update on the classic covers would be pretty damn cool.

I'm looking forwarad to those quite a bit. Collected books are one thing, but new reprints of single issues with fresh covers and color? That's GREAT.

I'm still undecided on how I feel regarding the rerelease of the old issues in color. Granted, I wasn't too fond of the coloring in the First novel due to it having a pastel look (imo), it is intriguing to see how modern digital coloring will make the issues pop.

There's only so many copies of the first volume that I think I want to own. Between the issues I already owned, The Ultimate Hardcovers, and the TMNT Classics tpbs, I don't see myself buying the single issues AGAIN just to see them colorized. The B&W art has a lot to do with the charm of the original run.

IDW you folks really need to contact Mark Martin to do the cover for the collected book of his tales!
I'm pretty sure he would be more than happy to do it.

Are you talking about the Ultimate Collection Volume 2?

I preordered it on amazon and bow it says it is coming out the 24th.

But my LCS got it today. Not sure what's going on there.

I'm pretty sure it's the same deal as when the first IDW TMNT trade came out in comic shops before Amazon. I'm guessing they get priority. Which makes sense, because they probably have a hard enough time trying to compete with Amazon.

Unless the LCS are offering the book for 29$, I don't mind the few extra weeks on books. As Matches Malone said, that is a difficult competitor.
