Given they have appeared in their human forms in the IDW series, with the strong indication that they will be mutated, do you think we'll see them in cartoon?

I suppose if eastman can bring them into the comics then they can bring them into the cartoon updated.

And yet they're not using Krang, just a species based on him called The Kraang.

I am hoping Krang shows up as their leader later on.

This.

I'm not 100% certain they'll show up after all since they aren't using Krang, I do hope we eventually get Krang. Heck since The Kraang are using Utrom suits we might not even see Utroms in this series..

Give how their classic figures still sell, I'd see no reason not to bring them back, perhaps even as the leaders of the Purple Dragons if that is used. I'm not the producer or writer however, so we'll just have to wait and see. And since this show is aimed at 4 and up, I wouldn't be surprised if they get stupid once in awhile, which I don't mind as long as it doesn't go over the top.

I hope they're brought on board. Just not as dumb as they were on the OT.Yeah, like how they were when the OT series started. Those two weren't that dumb and super strong and they weren't afraid of Shredder or Krang. In other words, they were actual threats and the turtles had to use their skill to defeat them early on as opposed to outsmarting them since they lacked a lot of intelligence later on.

It's a little too early to tell that, in my opinion. So far, the only tangible connections to the Original Toon are the Kraang, and Rob Paulsen. Still, the revelation that mutation will play a large role is good evidence that Bebop and Rocksteady will be brought back.

We know that they're doing that because that's what they told Mirage interested them in doing specifically during the sale.

I wasn't talking about the IDW series... I'm still reserving judgement for a while.

People liked them because they were entertaining.

We liked them because we were like 6 years old and a goofy punk mutant warthog and rhino was cool to us then. They're betting that a new generation of 6 year olds will react similarly... and they're probably right.

*shrug*

Lots of people who aren't even die-hard fans of the old show still like them. And so far people are open to the idea of them in the IDW comics.

They're going to be treated differently in different mediums. Characters are only campy because the show they were written for was that was.

I really can't wait to see what Tom Waltz does with them for example, makes me wonder when their next appearance will be.

Yeah pretty much. The characters had no depth or complexity. They blindly did whatever Shredder told them too and only expressed concern when it came to comic books or video games. They essentially were little kids in adult bodies. They were so cookie cutter in fact that all they did in the later seasons was shoot things because they did away with the comedy element for the most part. Kids liked them for their looks, adults like them for their looks. They look cool. That was it.

Bebop and Rocksteady had a number of scenes that have nothing to do with taking orders from Shredder.

Yeah where they played video games and fought over comic books. Or do you mean the 1 episode out of the almost 200 where they go rogue? Oh yeah they got turned into children once and followed the turtles around. Then one time Rocksteady fell for April. Hm did I miss any? No matter what they were doing they were just comic relief with no depth. Even the Archie book had a hard time writing them and wrote them out pretty early on.

You know good and well Murphy did that to distance the series from the cartoon, which is why Krang also went and he never brought back Baxter Stockman either.

The fact that Murphy didn't even mutate Baxter into a fly says enough in itself. He simply didn't want to do the same thing the show was doing.

Yeah with little complexity which is why I don't see how people can say they were awesome characters. Aside from stellar character design the characters had nothing much else going for them outside a set few. People like them now because they had the toys and have fond memories of a TV series they most likely haven't seen since they were 8. Most adults would look at characters like Bebop and Rocksteady now in pictures and say "I remember them they were cool.". Then see them in the series and say "I remember them they were stupid."

In all honesty, as a kid, I didn't really particularly favor Bebop and Rocksteady. They were okay and I didn't dislike them, but weren't favorites for me. Having gone back to the show though, those two weren't bad (for the pilot eps and season 1). They weren't as dumb, they weren't afraid of Shredder or Krang early on seemingly, and they were more difficult to physically fight. They were portrayed best for those eps, imo, compared to how dumb they really were later on.

I am not an old school, hardcore TMNT fan. The only reason I originally came here on this forum is because of the new toys based on the classic Fred Wolf series (I only found out it was referred to as this from reading on this forum) so a return of Bebop and Rocksteady is a welcome one for me.

If the new series is an amalgamation of the different properties then it may be a better jumping on point for me to follow this new direction and not just focus on the TMNTC toyline

I think you're being a tad too critical. OK; you're correct--the show doesn't have much depth, and is pretty much straight comedy. Yet the comedy was, in my opinion, done very well; far too well for me to resent the series the way you're doing. That said, I think I agree this new show should give them more depth. Maybe make them street-smart, able to operate capably and fight well enough when they're on their turf, but give them a realistic lack of culture and higher learning that causes goof-ups.

If they return I hope they at least act like they did in the first season, stupid but not toddlerstupid.

I'd be suprised if they didn't show up but I'd admire what many would see as a gutsy move not to have them there.

After all it's not like the generation of kids that they're aiming the show at would know Bebop or Rocksteady or care if they're used instead of Dogpound or the other mutants we've seen.

It's a nice nod to the minority of OT fans that'll be watching but it seems we're getting plenty of those anyway. Like everything else they should only be included if there's good reason beyond nostagia.

I'm actually not sure we'll be a minority. I don't really know the sort of fanbase Nickelodeon has these days, but I always have a bit of a worry that a series that worked in one era might not have the same appeal in another. Of course it could change itself to have new appeal, but that might turn OT fans into a minority for a different reason: A lot of them could hate it.

The vast majority of TMNT fans still like the original cartoon, aside from hardcore Mirage fans like Andrew.

And really, there's a reason why even 15 years after the original show ended, that Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady are STILL the most recognizable TMNT villains after Shredder, despite being gone for an entire cartoon series.

But the old argument goes that established TMNT fans, be it fans of the Mirage comics or the Fred Wolf show arn't sizeable enough to make much difference to their plans. Sure Nick will value us enough to throw us a bone every now and again and they wont want to do anything to alienate us but when it comes down to it they want kids watching their show.

These characters will not be recognizable to the audience they are courting. Don't get me wrong they could use Bebop and Rocksteady but it wont make a difference to kids whether they use Bebop, Groundchuck or Fish Face.

True, but Nick knows that those characters were popular with kids once before, and there's no reason kids of today wouldn't love them just the same.

And honestly, all these new animal mutants just pale in comparison to the originals. They picked the right animals when they were creating Rocksteady and Bebop. I'd even love to see Rahzar/Tokka return.

True, but Nick knows that those characters were popular with kids once before, and there's no reason kids of today wouldn't love them just the same.

While true, visually and mentality-wise now they seem a lot like throwbacks to a bygone era where punk rockers and punk rocker-esque gangs dominated the streets and mohawks and all that were all the rage. It worked in 1987, but it all seems a bit silly and dated now, in 2012. You just don't see that sort of stuff anymore beyond select cliques nowadays who get stuffed into lockers. Who's to say if kids of 2012 would connect to them now were they exactly as they were then.

I'd say we're about to find out, though. But I believe they'll still be visually updated a bit into something else.

I think the other problem is these new mutants look too accessorized. Fishface seems to have robot legs, and Dogpound has all those damn spikes all over him.

Rocksteady and Bebop's designs were simply "normal" and down to earth. They just wore their street punk clothes and that's it.

Sooner or later they will introduce the original mutants of the franchise. If IDW is using them in comics aimed at adults I see no reason Nick wouldn't.

Does seem strange that they're choosing to introduce new mutants like Dogpound and Fishface right off the bat rather than use well known mutants.

I understand every new series wants to introduce fresh characters right away, that's why IDW introduced Old Hob, but it makes you wonder.

We don't even know if Krang himself will appear as the leader of the Kraang.

I don't want a carbon copy of the OT, or IDW. I think that's one reason I'm able to do the IDW sereis thus far. It's different enough that I don't feel like been there done that. Plus Old Hob is a great addition. The comic is brining in enough old things to make some fans happy but adding new layers to it too.

I'm hoping Nick does that too. I'm hoping that there is enough there to recognize it but enough different that I'm not thinking someone else did it better. I guess that's why part of me doesn't want to see these guys again now for a third time. I have a feeling we will though. I'm open to seeing them again but if we do I hope Nick keeps them fresh.

Bebop/Rocksteady went a 15 year gap between appearances from the end of Season 8 in 1994 to 2009's Turtles Forever.

They were one hit wonders. In the OT they served one purpose and that was to screw up the Shredder's plan. Heck that was even their point in Turtles Forever. For me as a child that was what made them so much fun. When I watch the OT that's part of what makes it magical for me.

That doesn't mean I want to see them other places. You're right Cubed they were "gone" for a while. But they weren't really when I, or anyone else, puts on a dvd of the OT.

I certainly hope so. Bebop and rocksteady are a huge part of the TMNT mythos, even if they were not in the original comics.

and guess what? i am still pissed at eastman and laird for now allowing their inclusion in the secret of the ooze movie, so instead we got tokka and rhazar.

however, i must add, i want bebop and rocksteady to be a serious threat to the turtles and not the goofy screw-ups they were in the original cartoon.

I'd like to see Bebop and Rocksteady in the new series.

I'd be more than happy if they're simply human "thugs" for a while before they mutate into their more beastly forms. And I'd be especially happy if they were a serious threat to the turtles (preferably in both human and mutant forms).

At the moment, the new dog and fish/pirahna/shark (?) mutants don't really appeal to me, but it's unfair to judge them based on action figure proto-types alone.

04-08-2012, 05:19 PM

The fact that there are no toys for them right out of the gate, and not even any sketches/molds like Leatherhead/Metalhead and Baxter...makes me think they're not in Season 1 if they appear at all.

I guess Nick wants to make sure their new mutants like Dogpound and Fishface become popular, rather than being overshadowed by Bebop and Rocksteady.

I think, if done properly, Bebop and Rocksteady could definitely be updated and made a more "serious" threat to the Turtles. Look at the successfully updated versions of Monkian and Jackalman, (now named Addicus and Kaynar), in the new Thundercats series. Definitely an example of two character updates done right!

I'm sure the new Nick TMNT could pull off such a transformation for Bebop and Rocksteady. Less clumsy/buffoonery, more menacing/serious, but still with a touch of humor.

Wasn't it stated somewhere that if the classic line action figures sell well, we'll be seeing more OT figures? Surely Bebop and Rocksteady would be in that following batch of characters? I mean, they are really popular.

that's speculation so far, they have to be released AND sell well.

no, what I meant was in-scale in-design wise with the basic line. I want Playmates to go bonkers like they did with the vintage line.

Oh okay. Thanks for clearing that up for me.:)

Oh yeah, I'd be all for that if they do! They'd definitely have my buy-and I am sure many others as well.:tsmile:

I currently don't expect them to, but it would be nice to see updates to both the old dunderheads. It's not like the foot aren't utilizing mutants in this new show, so it wouldn't be hard to explain their existence.

If for no other reasons, toys of them would be great. Especially if the classics line sells well, they could have both modern and class versions of them out in stores.

Odd. With IDW using Krang/Bebop/Rocksteady and Nick not, you'd expect it to be the other way around.

And before anyone says anything, no, "The Kraang" is not the same thing as Krang himself. I just view those as evil Utroms.

I agree, with them bringing back leatherhead I'm sure they'll bring back Bebop & Rocksteady. My bet will be in the later seasons once they run out of new character ideas.

doesnt matter to me what they use as long as they keep TMNT alive on the TV for kids, you got to think TMNT cartoon is for kids, comics are for young adults/adults.

I thought it was not ruling out their inclusion later on. Who is to say these two to three mutants fail too many times and are done away with and Bebop and Rocksteady are the more competent replacements? Okay, wishful thinking but it does say they can show up sometime down the line.

For sure. I can already see the teasers now: "Get ready for Bebop and Rocksteady next season, kids!" As a generation of the little tykes this show is actually for go, "Who?"

Or it could be some sort of bastion to TPTB. "We're not actually doing the Fred Wolf cartoon... even though what we're doing is real goofy and we're even re-using the Fred Wolf theme music. What, you need proof? NO BEBOP AND ROCKSTEADY! And no cowabunga, we're going all booyakasha on yo ass."

I think they want to create something new and not follow things from the OT, at least while they begin, I can see them going and adding OT flavors in later seasons, similar to how The Batman 2004 tried to be it's own take in the first few seasons and later incorporated the more known mythos after fans complained and because they also wanted too, best of both worlds.

Problem is with exception for a handful of episodes The Batman is dull, but the 4th and 5th seasons were amazing. My three favorite DC characters in their iconic hero identities and the tone was perfect. I would hate to have half of the series so-so and half amazing.

The first seasons of The Batman were at least unique even if they indeed had some weaker episodes, unlike S4 which felt like BTAS lite, not that it wasn't awesome but you know it still felt that they had thrown out all the uniqueness for the sake of being more like BTAS. S5 however was just awful, terrible season. I still feel The Batman is very underrated for coming after BTAS.

I was bored with The Batman and did not watch it regualrly until after Barbara joined but when my favorite Dick Grayson joined and it was a good mix of serious and fun it equaled the first three of four Batman:TAS. The thing is it had the tone right and my second favorite team aside form the Ninja Turtles is Bruce Wayne as Batman,Dick Grayson as Robin, and Barbara Gordon as Batgirl!

I think they are saving them for Season 2. They probably want Dogpund and Fishface to have no "competition," if that makes any sense, as the only main mutant duo of Shredder's in Season 1.

After they become popular characters (or not), they'll probably bring in Bebop/Rocksteady and other mutants like Rahzar/Tokka.

Considering every TMNT universe uses the same characters, (Shredder, Baxter, Rat King, Leatherhead), I don't see why they can't use those two.

They fit the humor of the series too.

That doesn't make any sense. New characters are created all the time, those new characters can then return in later series.

Look at Metalhead.

Bebop and Rocksteady get crapped on because they were goofy. That is why Laird hated them and the fact they did not originate in the black and white comics. Aside from a 10 to 11 character set from those comics all the characters have come from the other media and made it so much better. Bebop and Rocksteady need a chace to evolve and continue on in the franchise and no be blocked for goofiness or becasue a creator wnats only his comic orginated characters. I love Agent Bishop and he is my favorite 2003 cartoon original. I want to see Bebop,Rocskteady, and John Bishop continue on in some form! One thing that might help Bebop and Rocksteady is getting a little blood on thier hands and maybe being seperated to showcase their individual characters. I don't know why Agnet John Bishop should be confined or what would make one think the character should be. I love the pool of characters the Other Media creates! There might be lousy ones like in my opinion Hun,but there are more good character than bad! Its just figuring out which ones fit each version as it comes about!

Since when do characters who were created in one series are not allowed to be in another? Look at Angel, a 4kids character appearing in the IDW comics for goodness sakes.

Nick should and can use whomever they want. Bebop/Rocksteady, Hun, Old Hob...they could use anyone.

Now I haven't read the IDW series yet, but isn't that kind of considered a crossover universe, where they took different parts from different places and put them together (think someone mentioned before about Bebop and Rocksteady being in it)

...

Here, let me try it this way... I wouldn't mind if bebop and Rocksteady made an appearance, but it shouldn't be for as replacement or placed into any main fraction of the characters...

Something like they did for Tokka and Rahzar in the old toon would be good

They'll fit in perfectly with the tone and humor of this show. In fact they could be handled better than they were in the OT.
