I would love to see these artists who are doing the covers do an entire issue, maybe for one of the micros or specials down the line.
Dan Duncan is pretty good, but I wouldn't mind a little variety now and then.

Given the high level of detail and time likely involved in making that piece, it's likely it was begun before the sudden switching of gears to the rainbow. Though it's possible the artist just plain wanted them red... Bobby has affirmed that alternate cover artists are free to color them how they like.
Either way, makes for a wall-worthy poster piece. I would buy it right now.

I like this Very much... Leo's expression IS good, but the proportions of the turtles is very good - they're muscular, but they're not steroidal like some pics I've seen.
The cover art really improves with every issue. :) Tyler's definitely a good addition to the artistic arsenal...

Very classic in appearance. Leo as the leader, Mikey in the back following them, the sewer design, and of course the bandanas definitely would make a great poster. The way those bandana tails are placed however could be mistaken for hair! And who knows as this could be the issue where Shredder strikes as #10 on the first series had Shredder on the cover and the tenth episode of the 4kids series had the first appearance of Shredder!

Maybe a little... but I'm glad to finally see him.
My bigger concern is them not putting any turtles on the cover. Then again, we've got variants... and Shredder is extremely recognizable. I just hope they never get "Mirage cocky":

I too miss the metal mouth guard a bit, but the cloth kind of furthers the ninja/samurai hybrid design which is really cool and gives it a unique spin. I'm a little on the fence on the shoulder pads, wishing a bit they looked more like th Feudal Japan version, but again, I like its uniqueness.

Freakin EPIC!!! Now THAT, is a new take on Shredders design that I can really get to love.....soooooo much better than the Nick take on it for the new toon. Everything about this design makes sense and seems to serve a functional purpose.
Holy crap - just.....so bad ass!!!!!!!!:tgrin:

It seems unfair that our first time seeing Shredder is this way. It takes the "WHOA" right out of whatever issue he's to appear in.
I do completely see your point and it's totally valid. At the same time, I'm just happy to see this new version of him and am very pleased with the design. As Andrew noted above, the only thing I would possibly change is the metal face plate, as that IS Shredder - however, perhaps that comes into play later on - perhaps after he takes a massive beating to the face as it would be a vulnerable spot? Even if not, the cloth works and I have no major gripe with it.
At least the helmet isn't two feet tall/thin like Nick's......(not to mention the 4 foot blades on his gauntlets):twink:
You and me both.
Amen to that! The ONLY thing that will piss me off about the new Shredder in this generation is that he isn't 100% human. Let's pray they keep him his original human self. Hopefully he will look something like this in the new movie.

Gimmie a Casey issue, please and thank you.
I think a Casey issue would be great! (And essential.)
But for many of these supporting characters, I wish we could get their "how did they meet the Turtles" detail not just checked off but relationally developed before we start having adventures with them as the main focus. A Casey story could work either pre-turtles or post-turtles. A Splinter, Old Hob, Shredder, or Oroku Saki story would probably work fine too. Stockman would be a stretch at this point. But for characters like April, I just don't see how we could get an interesting comic out of her before issue #10. Hopefully, she'll have built up a decent rapport with the turtles before her Micro-Series installment comes around. A "Rocksteady"/"Bebop" issue might be fun too. But we'd probably need them to mutated before things really get interesting.

I think it's reasonable to say that Splinter, Shredder, April, and Casey are on the next tier of main characters in a TMNT book after the turtles. Given that, I always figured Splinter would be a natural stepping stone when branching out these Micro-Series, as he is the mentor of the four turtles in said series. On the other hand, #5 almost felt like a Splinter/Hamato Yoshi Micro-Series, so who knows!

All I know is it was sold as a poster on Mondo (tee shirts and poster prints) and was sold out in no time. There was at least one variant color. Last time I saw this poster someone had it on ebay for something crazy like $500. I always check Mondo now because the art there is great.
edit: looks like there is one up for $299 right now. There was another color version that was super expensive. Still to much for me to spend on a poster.

Interesting side note, in Eastman's version, it looks like the IDW Shredder will not have blades on his shins. Not sure if that really bothers me or not, but I think he looks more "complete" with them.

I also noticed Eastman's Shredder has a cape whereas I don't see one in Duncan's. Perhaps it's a perspective issue or a design that got changed. I personally prefer no cape. Duncan's Shredder is closer to the Mirage design than any other version, with a few minor changes, which I generally like. Still, it's different enough that it feels awkward to see Eastman trying to adapt Duncan's design. Then again, it seems like his cover was turned in a bit late, so maybe this was a rushed job. This will be my first time buying a Duncan cover since issue #3!

Good observation. It looks like the fabric bunching around the neck/shoulders in Duncan's is the same in Eastman's cover.....I wonder if the cape is really there in Duncan's, but just hanging directly behind Shredder's back/legs so we can;t see it. Once again, could just be perspective throwing things off. Now that I think of it, the bunching around the neck would be a bit weird if it didn't lead to a cape or something along those lines.
Regardless, Duncan's cover is one of the most impressive images of Shredder to date (in any universe).

Another factor to my preferring Dan's cover this time around, is in the colors of the Eastman variant. Kevin does a LOT of blacks when he inks stuff, and it's arguably a large part of his signature style. The toning is done in all black, rather than grays, duo-tone styled effects, or whatever. I guess the colorist or somebody at IDW feels that this type of work lacks breathing room for color, because they preserve the opacity and color over his blacks, making them darker shades of whatever color the part toned is. I don't like that. In a sense that's editing the original work, which is kinda disrespectful to Kevin (in my eyes at least) and I don't consider it an improvement. I like the dark gritty stuff way better. A variant doesn't necessarily need to be an eye grabber with color, it's just a collectors issue anyway, really.
