View Full Version : Why the hate for garbageman

I'm not a big fan of garbageman or something, but I don't get the hate so many fans seem to have for him. Granted he is pretty unrealistic establishing a garbage empire and then an underwater empire, but it's not like I felt the episodes he was in were terrible. They were still entertaining when I first watched 'em.

He was just a lame villain. Honestly, I saw him as the equivalent to that Batman: TAS guy who had the family of runaways in the sewer or whatever.

He's just that... scrappy?

He's lame, the story where he's the main villain is boring, and... well, he's lame.

For the tone of the series he seemed...off. Part of me wonders if he was a back-handed "homage" to the Fred Wolf series.

He probably would have been liked more if Nightmares Recycled wasn't cancelled. Wasn't that episode supposed to be about his origin with Hun?

They were suppose to do a origin episode, but I dont know the name of the ep.
There was a thread about Laird blog and production notes.
The ep seemed really graphic and in all honesty might have gotten shelved like insane to the membrane.

Yeah, all Redeemer just said is about Nightmare Recycled. (http://peterlairdstmntblog.blogspot.com/2012/01/blast-from-past-359-february-26-2005.html)

Really? Cause I saw his story being very similar to the Batman:TAS episode where a bunch of homeless people are kidnapped and forced to do hard labor for some fat slob.

Personally, I found the garbageman's episodes to be very boring. Fortunately there was only a couple of them. However, I think that the third one might've been kinda interesting since it would've involved Hun. How ironic that Hun was (at least to me) a very interesting character, and the garbageman (who was going to be revealed to be Hun's twin) was (again, at least to me) a very boring character.

Really? Plot seemed more like it was ripped off from "The Forgotten" rather than "The Underdwellers".

I don't know about backhanded. I thought his first episode was an outstanding homage to the OT. It had a cheesy villain, the turtles interacting with humans, "surfing" on impossible objects, trenchcoats/fedoras, and what I'm pretty sure was the series' first full on "cowabunga".

He really was just straight up lame, man. Bad design, bad motives, just not good at all.

Bad motives is right, for sure. I mean, yeah he's getting slave labor out of the homeless guys... but he's got to be paying those armed guards quite well. And for that matter, how much money could he possibly be making running a garbage dump? Aren't all garbage collection companies at least partially city or county operated?

He just was not an interesting character, who I probably wouldn't have minded as much had he not gotten a second episode that I was forced to sit through :tlol:

There were just so many other possibilities for story lines they could have done that it felt like a complete waste literally for them to have two with him.

The fact that the turtles themselves laugh at the absurdity of the character says enough to me. I don't care for the episode.

He was awful. I hated him and thought the episodes he had were boring. Maybe "Nightmares Recycled" could've redeemed him in some way, but as for the two eps he was in, I didn't like them.

Simply put, Garbageman is just watching some garbage! I would have changed the script to make it more educationally friendly, such as destroying all of the recycled matter that upsets citizens, but I think that they came up with the name because of how similar it sounds to "Shredder". After trash goes through a shredder, it is garbage. And the Garbageman episodes simply seem like plot material that are Shredder's leftovers: in other words, garbage.

The first Garbageman episode was actually fairly decent.

The one in Season 2 was horrible and one of the worst episodes of the first 5 seasons.

Something about the episode just felt like a chore. Maybe because the "mystery" of Garbageman was over.

The only other weak Season 2 episode I could think of was "The Golden Puck," or of course the clip-show "Reflections," but I didn't mind 'em.

Golden Puck was pretty dumb, I like watching it if I'm ever off work on a snowy day though. Agreed on Reflections.

However, I'd much rather watch that Garbageman ep than City At War, April's Artifact or Return or the Justice Force.

Agreed on City at War and Return of the Justice Force, April's Artifact while having kind of a dumb plot has a lot of funny brother banter and Raphael's being pissed at bugs which always makes me laugh so I personally would rather re-watch that one.

The garbageman episode is probably my least favorite of season two (I actually find watching Reflections more fun because the new animation mixed in with the clips at least gives me a laugh at times)

Also I am kind of surprised on the hate for the Golden Puck episode, yes it's kind of silly but I think it's worth for the hotel scene alone and Casey being stealthy and "hiding" with his head under the dresser. I still laugh every time I watch that. I just love this episode and "All Hallows Thieves" when I just feel like watching something that makes me laugh. Plus in the middle of the hot mess that was "City at War" and "Rouge in the House" it was an nice break in the initial run.

LOL, City at War was poor compared to the comics, but taken on its own its pretty decent. And I'd take any Foot story over it anyday.

Also April's Artifact wasn't a bad episode either, just a decent filler plot.

Because of all the 4Kids villains, he was the most cartoonish. He was a character who tonally would have worked a lot better in the FW series. We all know Peter grudgingly accepts the FW series, and as Nines said, other Fred Wolf-ian elements are thrown into this episode. Maybe the use of the word "back-handed" is a bit much, though. Maybe I only see it as back-handed because most of the times we see expanded references to the FW series in the 4Kids one, aside from brief cameos, they are kinda, for lack of a better term, mean.

I think he woud work better in Archie, as it delas with homeless peole, and Archie used to deal more with social issues.

I thought he was disgusting; However that is his character and he did have potential for being a great villian who only majors in being disgusting lol. The idea were the Garbageman and Hun were conjoined twins was pretty radical but that episode got cut because it was too graphic. Garbagman is interesting to watch for ugly reasons and the canceled episode would have been the first entertaining episode of him to watch.

Couldn't they just be siblings. Yeah they could just be siblings but it negates a possibility to fuel the character's trait which is being disgusting.

It's also great to not judge characters because your supposed to become a different person when you view a film/show. The writer and director have the job to convince you to believe the content and feel like you can be this person if you had the same upbringing and experiences.

I think the reason I like his first episode was the sense of mystery behind it, especially when all you see is the garbagetruck zooming around snatching up people. I also really like the homeless professor guy, I wish he was in more episodes.

By his second episode, the "mystery" was gone, so it had to rely on the story to make it interesting, which failed.

I agree with all the above, actually.

Garbageman is a character that I almost want to like, yet can't seem to. I don't blame the character, as I blame the writers. Problem is, he appeared to be too one-note, so there isn't much to do with him. However, if the writers really wanted to do a sly callback to the 90's era, he could easily have been revised to become the new generation's Muckman. Especially as the Muckman design -- figure-wise -- was a creepy one, and wouldn't be so out of place in the 2003 series. Laird wouldn't have gone for it, but such an idea could have potentiallly salvaged -- pardon the pun -- a somewhat Z-Grade character. Or, throw in the Muckman design with his final appearance, and he could look like Mojo from X-Men. The designs could mesh well, if done right.

As for another garbageman-turned-mutant, there's Wyrm's toy origin. Except, Wyrm is way more cooler, and Muckman for Garbageman would make more sense (to me, at least). Anyway, if my Muckman idea sounds too weird, feel free to disagree or convince me otherwise.

I'll comment about the attempted "Hun brother" plotpoint another time, as I'm not sure what to make of that.
