July 3rd @ an SRP of $40...

Thought it was worth mentioning so I could ask: At $10/issue, can I assume this collection will be printed on sheets of pure gold?

Link?

The only place I've seen it listed is Amazon's $26.57 pre-order.

Supposedly they may include Kevin's layouts as well.

I feel that special edition hardcovers should contain double the number of issues contained, if not a crapload of bonus material.

I'll just buy it anyway, but here's hoping for lots of bonus material.

Barnes & Noble is offering it a half-dollar(ish) more expensive. Still, discounted from the seemingly absurd SRP of $40...

I'll agree with the price if that turns out to be the case.

How is $40 absurd for a full-color hardcover book that we really have no details on yet? Especially when the discounted prices are quite reasonable.

I think he's preceding on the assumption that this hard cover is only 4 issues, which makes the individual issues cost $10 each in the hard cover. There has to be more to it than just the 4 issues, though. If not, then that is a bit nutty.

Exactly. Especially because you are not only paying for those issues. You are paying for a nice, hardcover package. With Kevin's layouts to boot, and I'm sure a few more extras. I wouldn't be opposed to pay $40 for it but I know I can find it cheaper.

The Amazon link says it will include Kevin's layouts for each issue as well as some preliminary art and totals 192 pages. That's about double the issues, so not too much "new" material, but a good amount of extras if you count the layouts. I bought the TPB so I could read the 4 issues as one story arc as intended, but I will probably pass on this... Eastman fans will probably be excited though.

The price is ok.
Just a bit more than the Deluxe Edition HCs of other companies.
but not that much.

I am going to skip the already released TPB and buy this one when it is released.

to be honest i love TPBs more. As long as they are not too thick, which having a probability of the pages falling apart... They are easy to read. Much less art lost cause of binding, compared to HCs.
But since i am buying this baby not for reading ( or at least not for a first experience reading, just for shelf collection ), while owning the single issues, Deluxe HC edition is a better choice for me.

I could use a definition for "layouts".It's like storyboards. The general placement, "camera" angles and blocking is done in layouts, to be referenced for the actual panel drawings.

They've been printing some pages of these in the monthly books. Which brings me to the conclusion that you haven't been reading those. Which makes me wonder even more so why you're so snarky about the price of the book.

This is a layout.

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=842246&GSub=124370

After the script is made, Kevin will ''Layout'' the story by drawing it, besically to show Dan what to draw. Often there will be notes next to a panel to let the artist know a certain feeling or mood that is to be captured in that particualr panel.

Someone needs a nap. Why might you be getting so defensive about this? I'm just pointing out that hardcover + a few extra pages that aren't available elsewhere doesn't seem like a fair excuse for a 220% boost in SRP.

But if you just want to read the stories, you can spend $12 on a TPB and read the stories. But a hardcover is a nicer package and for the collectors.

I gotta agree with gobo that $40 MSRP is f***ing theft for even what this book is. For one, a hardcover book isn't that much nicer of a package (and certainly can't cost that much more to produce), and layouts don't constitute as full issues because of the simple fact they're works in progress, no matter how awesome.

So yeah, even at $25, I feel like this is highway robbery, but I'll still be buying it anyway because I really love Eastman's work.

"Collector" schmollector, something like this shouldn't be priced so high, and I can't understand ANYBODY defending that price.

Um, Amazon has it listed for $26. Which is a fair price for this package. I don't really understand why everyone is so up in arms about an SRP. You know damn well you are going to get it cheaper on Amazon so why complain? This isn't Burger King, you can't always have it your way. Either spend $3 monthly and enjoy the stories or shell out $30 for a nice, hardcover. Simple as that.

Just to clear things up a bit, I have 0 intention of getting this book. I was only concened they were setting themselves up for disappointment with low sales on their in-house hardcovers vs the Mirage hardcovers. With all the folks claiming they'll be getting it anyway, I suppose I was wrong. It happens.

Um, Amazon has it listed for $26.

You must not have read my entire post because I even complained about Amazon's price. And of course I'm going to gripe about SRP because it plays a big part in deciding how low a place like Amazon can price the product.

The ONLY reason I'm picking this up is for the layouts, and even then I may just say forget it and not give in to IDW's ridiculous pricing. $25–27 for four teeny-tiny issues plus works in progress is not in any way a value, hardcover or not. I may yet buy it, but I will never, ever defend that pricing, which is mondo absurdo.

I like the quality of IDWs hardbacks. Makes the TMNT section on my bookshelf look so awesome. Some of the larger IDW hardbacks Ive picked up have cost me well over $100 so the Amazon price isn't really an issue for me.

Wonder if it will have the same dimensions as the Ultimate collection?

Dude, I get it. You think the SRP is absurd for what we're getting. That, I agree with. $40 is too much. You think Amazon's $25 for this hardcover is too much. What would be a fair price to you, then? $15? $20? The TPB is like what, $15 at most comic shops? That breaks down to about $4 an issue.

I hate to tell you this, but purchasing the book IS defending the price...or at least validating it.

Garbage gets created and sold at unfair prices because consumers allow it. Period. You validate merchandise with your dollar.

Now, having said that, I don't think the $25 range for a hardcover is bad.

I'm down. I only buy HC when given the option so this works great for me. It cost so much I imagine because IDW is an independent label and doesn't produce HC books as often as Marvel or DC does, hell even DC barely does HC books. They're not cheap to make but they look damn nice.

Deluxe Editions are never as big as Ultimate ones. There might be exceptions, yeah, but i believe this book will be closer to the size of DC's Deluxe Edition HCs.
DC's Deluxe Editions are generally 24.99. So IDW's is more expensive yeah, but i could not understand that much critisism to be honest.
Nearly every month , other HCs from other companies , closer to that price is being published and offered.

Other than 3-4 titles which i am huge fan of ( TMNT, Usagi Yojimbo, Spawn, Savage Dragon ) I am mostly a TPB / HC only collector. I , too, think that, this offered price is a bit high ( since this is the collection of a fresh, currently being published monthly comic book , which there will be a second HC volume - and so on - with that same price probably... This price would make more sense if it was for a new printing of an old/classic story, such as DC does for new Swamp Thing HCs of classic Alan Moore stories - which are still less expensive than this book )
I do not think it is too much of a price but if you still want a collected edition on your shelf, and thinking this price is insane, you can buy the regular TPB anyway , anytime...
I will not be buying from Amazon btw. Will be paying the full price here. Amazon international shipping sucks, they give minimum importance and care to packaging, nearly every damn book comes damaged, so i gave up on them 2-3 years ago. Tho their discounts are cool, yeah...

Exactly. Any less and it really wouldn't make much sense to make one, since the TPB would be so close in price. People just want more for less nowadays. Can't help it, it just is the way it is.

Yeah, I feel the series is read a lot smoother in the trade versus monthly. Glad to hear you liked it though.
