View Full Version : Do you suppose the IDW Ninja Turtles will be considered heroes?

I know when it comes to labeling the TMNT as "heroes" or "vigilantes" there are two different camps. Some people prefer to see the Turtles as crime fighters who protect the innocent like every comic book character in spandex does, but then we got fans who see the Turtles as something else; which has me wondering which direction the new comics are going to take the green teens.

Most TMNT versions starts with the TMNT being considered evil freaks (except human friends from different versions like April, Irma, Casey Jones, Zack, Angel, Keno or whatever), then gradually being accepted as heroes and finally, when we se the future, entering society.

The concept of the tmnt works best for me when they aren't necessarily "heroes". I like to know that they have a strong moral compass and will help when they can, but otherwise, their main priority is keeping their family safe. When you are out searching rooftops for "bad guys", you don't have your family's best interest in mind.

I hope not. They should never get any recognition from the outside world.

I started another thread along the same lines as this a while back:

It's definitely an interesting question because I think once Mirage started to license out the turtles, the concept got a bit muddled and started leaning a bit more in that direction. Perhaps not explicitly, but you could kind of sense it in the way they act and the way they are marketed. However, "heroes" and "crime-fighters" aren't necessarily the same thing. The turtles certainly are heroic in the sense that they try to do the right thing, but I don't think most people want to see them become professional crime-fighters, as that kind of goes against how they were initially established and what ultimately makes them interesting: living their lives while remaining complete outsiders.

Any incarnation starts off they are not heroes but as it processes early on they become unsung heroes. They are heroes in a half-shell for a reason! Crimefighters is something else though as the turtles stop crime that comes to them and does not go out and look for it. If Shredder is a villain the Ninja Turtles are heroes. Cannot have one without the other!

To me they are just trying to live their lives. They stop people from doing bad things that could expose them or have an adverse affect on them. I don't like the idea that they go out looking for crime to stop. That would be counter productive to staying hidden.

They are heroes in a half-shell
They are no such thing. And a "half shell" is a nonsense term... they are not missing their carapace or missing their plastron.

It's probably a term they kept after the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Oysters" cartoon didn't pan out...

I think a more pressing concern at the moment is; will the turtle boys cut any slack once the evil Shredder attacks?

One would hope not, I suppose... though come to think of it, that's probably a pretty good question since we still haven't seen the IDW Turtles involved in any ninja fighting at all yet. Are they just going to smack Foot Soldiers and/or Shredder around and occasionally graze them with their blades and, like, let them off with warnings at the end of the day? We have no idea yet.

I am still have the feeling that the Leo Micro-Series and the debut of the Shredder in #10 will be similar to what we got in IDW #5: That gritty ninja action we've been waiting for. If this is the format, I can get behind it; essentially delivering solid and serious storylines (with its occasional humorous moments) and saving the really gritty moments to make them really count and pack a punch. Here's hoping!
