Question, Why dose Mikey have a nunchuck in his hands????He didn't have them in the final season.

Probably whoever drew the cover for this set didn't even think about that fact and just went 'Mikey has nunchaku, let's do this' mentally. I mean, the cover's definitely a newer drawing isn't it? Sure doesn't look like any old artwork for the show.

Now that this set is coming out and is gonna give us the skipped episodes - along with Wal-mart's AWESOME new method for online ordering - I'm finally gonna be able to start picking these sets up soon. I can't wait.

I sincerely hope we get a complete series release, only because I stopped buying the volumes fairly early because I was upset with the manner in which they were being released. I later learned some of the reasons behind the odd releases, but I'm still not incredibly satisfied.

I'm pretty picky when buying DVDs anyway, and I especially don't like buying volumes. That's why I'm also not particularly happy Lionsgate has the newest Power Rangers series also.

Cipher

Everyone here realizes how unlikely a nearly 200-episode complete series set is, right? The current release already spreads the series out over more than 20 discs, and even that's pushing it. A complete series would have to be so cumbersome and expensive, there's no way they'd be able to market it.

At best, I could see half- or one-third-series sets. Although as far as I know, all the Lionsgate volumes are still readily available, so I don't predict it in the near future.

Mr. Orange

I'd hoped they'd decide to go back at least and correct the releases for boxsets. Of course you'd have to include season one and two in one set.

By my calculations, all 193 half-hours of the series and no extras would take no less than 21 dual-layer DVDs and 1 single... unless they compress the hell out of 'em, like they did with volumes 2-6. Just FYI...

Just FYI...Yeah, that's what I was saying. The current release of the series is already massive, and that's with an ungodly 12 or 13 episodes on some discs (which suffered accordingly). There's just no way to shrink this thing down into a single, marketable set. This is a huge, huge series, and they'd have to price it so high they'd be putting off all but the most fanatic potential buyers.

Yes, complete-series sets are inherently aimed at niche fanbases and are usually priced accordingly, but even then, they usually strive to stay under the 15-disc, $100 range to keep things reasonable.

We may see some compressed re-releases in the future, but don't get your hopes up for an all-in-one.

What are they supposed to correct? The only thing they messed up with was the two skipped episodes.

Its not like they knew where the Euro Vacation episodes really took place, even Mirage's official website listed them as Season 7 eps.

Uh, only Season 3 got volumes, every other season has a complete set release. I don't see what's so bad about it either, it was only 4 different DVDs.

Season 2 was oddly labeled as volume 2.

I realize this doesn't matter to some, but the episodes out of order and placed on the last disc of the previous season didn't make sense to me either. It's not something a casual person buying would notice, but it bothered me. I fully admit to being picky however.

But it still contained all 13 episodes of Season 2....what is the problem?

Only Season 3 was stretched out over 4 discs.

It was just puzzling to me is all.

I said I was picky when it came to DVDs. Lionsgate is doing the Power Rangers Samurai DVDs and they appear to be doing even worse with them. Either way, I'd love to see them go back and correct a few things.

Apart from being slightly outdated and not mentioning season nine and ten, this video pretty much sums up the issues:

The guy in the video is full of nonsense. There is NOTHING confusing about the Lionsgate TMNT DVDs.

Every Season had a complete set except for Season 3, and even then it was only 4 discs. There is one problem of two skipped episodes, and that's it.

I swear, how do people think there's a big problem with Lionsgate DVD releases?

That's awesome that you're great with them, and it was awesome to finally seem them on DVD, but I had just hoped they'd fix a few things.

There's nothing on volumes 1-6 that indicate they make up seasons 1-3. I've know dozens of people who thought the volumes were just random episodes, and/or that the DVDs had just skipped over the first three seasons.

It may not be confusing to you, or to anyone else that have followed the DVD releases, but it's incredibly confusing to a casual buyer (or, in James Rolfe's case, someone who jumped into the DVDs later on).

The Lionsgate DVDs were released in a decent manner. We have season sets for every season but one which is still in order.

Most people don't. Most series, you don't have to make a road map in order to find out what you have to purchase, it's laid out there plain-as-day where to start. When you see "Season 4" for a show, it's assumed there is sets for "Season 1", a "Season 2", and a "Season 3". In this case, there are sets for the first two seasons, but they're listed as "volumes". Even if you do realize that those volumes are seasons, by that extension, you start to assume that each volume has a complete season; but then, you'd wonder why there's "Volumes 4/5/6" and "Seasons 4/5/6". Keep in mind, this is a hypothetical situation with someone who isn't as in-tune with the classic Ninja Turtles series as we are; they might just be someone who grew up with the series who might feel like collecting the DVDs.

And you can't exactly blame them for thinking the Volumes have random episodes. If you notice, nearly all other animated series do Volumes for random episodes to appeal to the most casual (i.e. kids) buyers, and they rarely ever go in order. This is why the 4Kids releases got so screwed up by the end of season 2.

Even if I wasn't a hardcore TMNT fan, I doubt it would have taken me long to figure out what these DVDs were. People like to pretend that Lionsgate did this horrible injustice to fans, when in reality they released a 193 episode series on DVD from 2004 to 2012 with the only mistakes being two skipped episodes.

They even gave us interviews with th VA's for god sakes. People just love to complain.

Season 2 Countdown

Leo broke his weapon...

Ep. 5 - Curse of the Evil Eye

5:22 Shredder turns Leos Katana's into Ice Cream Cones (Ok, so they're not BREAKING, but close enough! Same story with Raph's Sais down below)

Raph broke his weapon...

Ep. 5 - Curse of the Evil Eye

6:09 Shredder turns one of Raphs Sai's into a boquet of flowers

7:30 Shredder turns Raphs other Sai into a Snake

Fourth Wall breaking moments...

Ep. 3 - It Came from Beneath the Sewers

20:40 Michelangelo: "Awesome shooting, Master Splinter!" Donatello: "Especially for someone who doesn't believe in violence!" Splinter: *Turns to camera and turns red*

Ep. 8 - Invasion of the Punk Frogs

19:27 Shredder: "You traitorous frogs! You set me up!" Donatello: "That's right tin face, and now you're taking the fall!" *turns to camera* "Now where'd I learn to say stuff like that?"

Ep. 14 - New York's Shinest

2:38 April: "Ooooo, the nerve of those creeps! They wouldn't get away with this if the turtles were here!" *Irma turns to camera* Irma: "Most people would want the boys in blue, she wants the boys in green."

Ep. 16 - Teenagers from Dimension X: (NOTE: It's kind of hard to tell if they are meaning to break the 4th Wall in these two because in the first one it almost looks like Shredder is looking at Rocksteady when he says "Nothing personal" and while the camera is zoomed in on Mikey's face in his line, he is looking off to the side, so I'm not sure if it's meant like he is talking to the other turtles or the neutrinos or something, but I marked them both down as 4th Wall Breaking moments.)

3:35 Shredder: "Excellent! Once inside the mento-neutralizer, those turtles will become mindless zombies!" *looks at camera* "Nothing personal."

9:49 Leonardo: "Surrender Shredder, or face the consequences of your actions!" Michelangelo: "Don'tcha just love it when he talks like that?"

Ep. 17 - The Cat Woman from Channel Six:

9:50 Michelangelo: "Man, theres nothin like a furious fun filled food flinging fight!" *turns to camera* "Try saying that 3 times fast!"

Pizza Toppings...

Ep. 1 - Return of the Shredder:

1:14 They aren't eating any pizza, but Leo and Mikey are in the grocery store and Leo says..."Come on, Michelangelo! Think healthy for a change! You had Peanut Butter & Jelly on you're pizza last night!" Then Mikey replies with..."No way, bud! I had Chocolate Chips and Caramel Fudge."

Ep. 7 - Enter: The Fly

21:20 Anchovies smuthered in Gazai Leafs

You mean for in case the 80s Ninja Turtles series gets new DVDs of some sort? The sets for the first, fourth, fifth, seventh, and tenth seasons already have special features.

Last fall, I decided I needed to free up some space on my DVR. So I recorded all the episodes on tapes. Sadly, I saw that I seemed to have inadvertently deleted the first episode some time before. Damn damn damn.

The quality of the episodes is fairly low, especially when they crammed so many episodes in some releases, the artwork is absolutely terrible and all the sets are inconsistent. No company will, but the quality has more to do with cramming so many episodes per DVD, take a look at the German DVD thread and how the quality is much better on those DVDs.

The artwork hasn't been bad since the Season 3 sets actually. What is bad about the Season 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 art?
They aren't what I'd call good either, they're generic don't reflect the OT and feel like those dollar DVD public domain artwork for the most part. I admit I kind of like them in a so bad they're good kind of way but not much besides that. They started off so well with season 1.

No they aren't. Every season has a complete set except Season 3. Even Season 7 was re-released including the Euro episodes together.
Inconsistent box arts, not to mention not releasing the missing episodes in the correct set because of their own lack of care. If I want to own the OT on DVD I want it to look decent on my shelf at least.

I agree this is terrible, but I am glad it is done.
I am glad they finished as well, but I wouldn't think twice about double dipping if we got some more proper DVD sets with better quality, menus, consistency, more bonus features and even the Turtles Tips that combined basically form one more episode length wise.

I don't expect one anytime soon but now that Lionsgate is finished releasing the show I can see them selling the show to Nick if they indeed want it or even trying to re-release the show again in better sets to continue milking the one turtle show they own, especially if the new Nick show and movie become big, they'll want to cash in on it. Counting they didn't mind waiting one year between volume sets, it wouldn't surprise me if in two years they announce a complete series box set or whatever, think about it, they were released as budget titles for kids especially those who watched 2k3 based on their covers ripping off the 2k3 turtles/2k7 movie and even putting the lyrics of the show on the first DVD. Some kid who was 8 when they started releasing Vol.1 would be 16 now.

When the DVDs first started I thought they would stop at the end of Season 3. After that season got spread out over 4 discs, I knew 40 episodes of Season 4 would be too much to come out like that.

Thankfully they released it all in one boxset, and we got one release a year until that nearly 2 year gap between Seasons 8 and 9.

Lionsgate got us all 193 episodes on DVD instead of stopping in the middle. That alone makes me thank them. I never believed back in 2004 we would get the entire series.

The sets for the OT weren't done the way they should have been by far. I love that we (eventually) got all the episodes and it's possible to own the complete entire series - that really is more than many shows get - but it was done haphazardly. Yeah some eps were out of order and some sets looked crummy because they crammed so much into them, but that didn't bother me much really. Not even the screwy packaging on half the sets bugged me too much; part of me liked the "I wonder what the next set's gonna look like" game, but it did get old quick.

Ultimately the OT definitely takes up too much space; in fact, I have 47 TMNT DVDs altogether, which means not counting the films there are 30-something DVD sets on my shelf representing a grand total of TWO television shows. Looking at it all at once is overwhelming and almost a tiny bit depressing. Plus, was there any REAL reason to drag the OT releases out over an entire decade? No show does that, not even a show with a comparable number of episodes. I'm glad we got what we eventually got, but it was NOT how it should have been done.

Masters of the Universe. She-Ra. New Adventures of He-Man. Even Masters of the Universe 2K3. Within a 2-3 year span, EVERY He-Man cartoon episode ever made was released on DVD, adding up to FAR more episodes than the TMNT series, in beautiful set cases with amazing artwork, arrangements, trading cards, documentaries, booklets containing detailed descriptions of EVERY episode IN ORDER (which they even corrected from how the series first aired on TV), and spine artwork on the cases that becomes one long inter-connected mural when the sets are collected, which looks terrific on a shelf. It probably took years to get it all in one place, but once they did, the entire thing was released in a timely manner and the final product was MORE than any sane person could ever have asked for or expected. In my opinion, it is the single greatest example of how to release a series on DVD, especially a very large one. Yes, it's really 4 different shows but it is meant to sit on a shelf as one huge collection, and each show's set is in the same style as the others, and it works brilliantly. And, for bonus points, it doesn't take up a huge amount of space. It's big, but it's not sloppy-looking or cumbersome like the TMNT series is when put in order on a shelf.

That's how the old TMNT series SHOULD have been done. I'm satisfied with what we got, because we really got a lot more than I expected (Seasons 1-3, maybe a few scattershot "Volumes" with random eps and that's all) and it's great TMNT gets to be a "complete" series. It's just that the way they did it was f*cking inexcusably terrible. It shouldn't have been this hard.

sdp
06-28-2012, 04:36 PM
Yeah I'm happy we got the show but I still want a better release, plenty of series and movies have gotten other releases, heck the drome is always asking for a special edition of TMNT 1990. I'm not demanding one but I hope we get one, I wouldn't think twice about double dipping if it's a nice release. If it were just all the previous discs in new packaging I'd pass.

Problem is, due to how many episodes the show has it would be like $200 and totally un-sellable as a Complete Series box set like Ghostbusters. I like the OT more than most people but most people would NOT pay even $100 for a TMNT box set, even with every episode, a crazy awesome collector's case and special features galore, that's just a sad fact of life. I would, and you would, but there's like 8 of us and whoever designs a box set knows the main job isn't to give fans what they want, it's to design a product that will make its money back, the sooner the better.

Here's how I'd do it:

They'd still need to break it up into about 4 volumes for it to be cost effective, the way I see it. He-Man was 130 episodes plus lots of Bonus material, originally released in four separate sets that cost about $30 each when they first came out, which I and most people found just right, especially when all four sets were out within a few months of each other. If the OT has almost 200 eps, it could be broken into about 4 sets of similar size and price if they skimp on Bonus material. Which they will; other than the VA's the people making TMNT didn't have a real affection for the product they were making like the Filmation crew did for He-Man, so it's unreasonable to expect Bonus material of the same quality as those sets. If I were doing it, each of the 4 sets would have a different Turtle as the centerpiece of the artwork; 5 Volumes means Shredder would be on the 5th case since I think he'd be more eye-catching at retail than Splinter or April. Since there's no reason to drag it out, they'd all see release within one year, coming out no more than 3 months apart.

That'd add up to a total of $120 give or take for all four volumes, $100 or less for the holiday sales, so it adds up to being more pricey than buying one huge set potentially would be, but people get a little less "Sticker Shell-Shocked" when they pay a little more over time than slightly less all at once. Then, having them on the shelf as four volumes would get the more sophisticated consumer to say, "I like this, but I'd gladly pay to have one big set with everything", and THEN (and only then) they'd have a reason to make the giant Deluxe Box Set we all not-so-secretly crave. Most likely it would be something you'd have to specially order from the manufacturer due to lack of retail space and interest, like the WrestleMania 1-20 box set was.

Honestly that sort of "Trojan Horse" strategy is the only conceivable way to get from A to B with this show. You can't just throw it all out there as one huge box for a lump sum price, not enough people would buy it. There's NO reason NOT to do it in the way I outlined, they have all the materials and the fanbase is obviously there for it, they just choose not to, more than likely because to them, it's too much work.

The quality of the episodes is fairly low, especially when they crammed so many episodes in some releases, the artwork is absolutely terrible and all the sets are inconsistent. This is not counting it took them how many years to release it, they started in 2004 almost a decade. Plus no turtles tips and the special features left much to be desired.

Man we really are a bunch of spoiled brats when you get right down to it, and when I say "WE" I mean it!
