Wait, they're gonna stretch it out over multiple volumes? Poo.

For what it's worth, Shout's own site still has the catch all 12/31/12 date.

It's kinda lame but wouldn't surprise me. Shout started splitting up their Nick shows after the first wave of releases. Hey Arnold Season 1 was released complete in a 4 disc set with all 20 episodes. Then they released season 2 in two parts with 10 episodes a piece. As long as I can get them cheap on amazon ($10-15) I won't feel too cheated.

Edit: Here's (http://www.amazon.com/Ninja-Turtles-Next-Mutation-Vol-1/dp/B0089BSOGO/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1339131394&sr=8-10) the link for those interested.

Bit odd there going for volumes....maybe they'll have the complete series on Shout! Select or something...besides, they released a "complete" set of M.A.S.K as well as a "volume one" for that too, so who knows what the overall plan is.

I've asked Brain Ward if there are any extras. He's yet to respond, but I'll keep you posted

Nope. That was the only version the UK had. This is the uncut version, the only one the US has. The only noticeable difference is that they had to replace the theme song. The theme song used to be my favorite part. Now, it's just as annoying as the show, itself. :tcry:

Are we sure they can't use the theme song? Just because they couldn't on Netflix, doesn't mean Shout doesn't have the rights. Heck, are we even sure that's the final box art?

Since the show was just one season, I was hoping they would just release it all at once, but as long as the sets are thirteen episodes each (meaning just two sets), I'll definitely get them.

Should be interesting to see what, if any, special features they include. Though I have the feeling there probably won't be any to speak of...

Not really, seeing as how Shout! has mentioned in the past that normal retailers have shown a lack of interest in carrying 4 disc sets.

Cipher
06-08-2012, 04:53 PM
Two-disc, thirteen-episode sets are increasingly standard for Shout! Almost every series outside high-profile items like Transformers receives them, apparently due to retailer interest as cited above. (It keeps per-set prices cheap and moves sets off shelves more quickly, in theory.)

That said, I wish I'd remembered that earlier when I was anticipating getting this entire atrocity for less than $20. I'll probably have to settle for less than $30 now, which feels a bit like parting with my dignity.

Hey, Jester, could ya please compare the episodic version of East Meets West I sent you clips of in a PM to the movie version? I really, really, REALLY want to know if the movie version has any scenes that the full-length American cuts of the episodic doesn't. If so, I want the movie version to be included as an extra. Other extras I'd like to see are the Power Rangers In Space episodes guest-starring the Turtles ("Save Our Ship" and "Shell Shocked") and an interview with Eastman.

I'd like to think the TMNT brand would be enough to push a full four-disc set, but whatever.

Poor choice of words on my part. He sold all the music, not just TNM. Everything apart from TNM, ie Power Rangers, Beetleborgs, etc retains it's music on Netflix and one can assume the DVDs as well. Saban kept some rights to still use it as he sees fit however.

The issue with the music on TNM is likely with the artist who originally created the song.

Ah, anyway, what?

I second wanting a few extra features. Some new interviews would make this a lot more palatable. I'm sure they can find someone, even Eastman or Laird, with something to say. It doesn't have to be glowing. The Power Rangers crossovers would be nice as well. Although I have zero interest in that franchise, they're really as much a part of the series as anything else, and completely indicative of what The Next Mutation was, at heart.

Shout! is interviewing fans apparently for the Power Rangers, so I kind of wish they'd do it here as they're known for that special touch. Not that I expect them.

Shout does have the license for Power Rangers as well, and they've gone farther out of their way to put stuff on other DVD sets, so I'd say it's very likely to be on there.

BUT we have to let them know about the crossover episode. That's how Shout Factory puts together DVD extras, they ask the fanbases what they'd like to see on the sets. If we let Brian Ward know about the Power Rangers in Space crossover, it's much more likely to show up.

Well, since "Shell Shock" is considered part of Power Rangers: In Space, if you want that episode, simply buy the PRIS DVD. But it wouldn't hurt to see bonus as a marketing ploy to sell more DVDs for this release, especially given that there is no DVD release yet for PRIS. But given that episode didn't come out until just before the final TNM aired, it would make more sense for this to be included in Volume 2's release. Shout, just don't charge too much for this (no more than $1.50 an episode) given the lukewarm reception,

We ARE getting the edited Netflix version with different music most likely/sadly. But I think you're referring to the UK Hero Turtles but I seriously doubt it, we never got the edited version and they aren't edited on Netflix and they're likely using those masters, those runtimes are always incorrect we're getting 6/7 episodes per DVD in the two disc set. Here's the IGN article confirming its the first 13 episodes:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/07/26/ninja-turtles-the-next-mutation-volume-one-resurfaces-on-dvd

Shout! Factory, in collaboration with Saban Brands, will bring it Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, Volume One to DVD September 4, 2012. This 2-DVD set features the first 13 action-packed episodes of the cult hit series, loosely based on both the animated series as well as the live-action films.

Interesting how they say its based on the live-action films. I guess it does have some sort of semi-canon status with the movie turtles...if you ignore how Shredder comes back to life.

He didn't actually die in TMNT II, we're just given strong reason to believe he did.

Comic Book (and by extension, "Movies Based On Comic Books") Death 101: "No Body = No Death", and even then it gets sketchy if it's a main recurring villain who might one day need another action figure.

Point being, the bad guy always comes back. Next Mutation was guilty of some sins all its own, but bringing Shredder back was definitely not one of them, although the way he was used they might as well have left him dead.

I'm still excited for it. I missed it when it was originally on TV, and I've watched some of it on Netflix. It isn't bad, it isn't great. I think a lot of what made it seem silly is the sound effects. So I'll be picking it up when it comes out.

sdp
07-29-2012, 11:21 AM
TNM has plenty of redeeming things about it, sadly it's shunned because of Venus and the sound effects. Far from great but it can be enjoyable, it really shouldn't be treated like TMNT's Jar Jar Binks.

Sad there seems to be Shout! didn't even care to come to the fans to see what we could put on the release, I guess PR's is just a bigger money maker for them, too bad we're getting treated like this not like there's much for them to put on TNM releases but there was room for some minor bonus footage that we won't have..

I wonder if this first set will even sell well enough that they bother releasing a second volume.

Seems odd to me, stretching an unpopular and obscure series out over two releases?
BrianW Explained that stores don't like to sell big sets anymore, so that may be the reason, which is why the MMPR is also being divided into parts, however the MMPR DVD volumes already include the same amount of episodes as the entire TNM so I think it's definitely the case of them trying to milk the most they can out of this short lived series.

As far as unpopular and obscure, it did air in a very popular children's block, not to mention it had good ratings, it was cancelled for various money reasons like Saban going Union and having to pay more actors, it didn't have japanese footage to make production cheaper and every thing needed new props diminishing profits unlike other Saban adaptations of Japanese superhero shows and the license was just expensive, also most of the people buying the set are going to be new kids who will only know the turtles because of the Nick cartoon.

Interesting how they say its based on the live-action films. I guess it does have some sort of semi-canon status with the movie turtles...if you ignore how Shredder comes back to life.

I've seen that "loosely based in the OT and Live-Action movies" nearly 10 years ago, I think it's a case of IGN just copying and pasting old press releases and advertisement. I think it was a way to get people from the OT to watch it, heck even the old NinjaTurtles.com had it listed as the "11th year" in the OT section but it really holds absolutely no continuity with the OT but it does have plenty of references to the movies from copying the personalities, where they lived, Splinter's ear, the foot soldier uniforms, it's grounded more in reality etc. It also doesn't contradict the movies.

Shredder coming back to life is no big deal, we don't really see him die in the second movie, him coming back in the second movie is already a bigger suspension of disbelief than him coming back in TNM.

I wish I had a standalone DVD player to try them out in, but I don't actually own one of those anymore...

I hate to be the "Johnny come lately" who is too lazy to read through this thread, but have we gotten an episode list yet?

I thought it was strange that V.1 is supposed to include the first 13 episodes, even though ep#13 is the start of the 4-part "Unchain My Heart" arc, according to the ever-wise Wikipedia.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Rose. I don't know if it would screw up the show's continuity but I guess a slight episode reordering makes sense for consumer convenience.

I really think they should have released the whole series at once, but eh...

I think Rose will be the only one who reviews the set that will be able to make music change comparisons so I hope she's up to the challenge. I doubt anyone else will care.
Also I doubt there are continuity problems with the episode change, I'd rather have the complete Vammi saga in Vol.2. Doesn't look like we'll get it but we really needed the PRiS crossover...I'm still holding out, Shout does like to put their sets together in a cardboard box even if it's crappy I'd rather have them together.

This also means Vol.2 will include two clipshows..oh well could be worse the clipshows actually have new footage and one works as a tribute to Venus and the other is a nice episode that shows the rivalry between Raph and Leo. Also one of the clipshows is out of order in the official listings since it includes footage from an episode not seen yet, I hope they put it in the correct place even if it means having two clip shows back to back which is probably the reason they were not aired in continuity order.

The stage show and the music videos are different properties though. You can import the official Dutch DVD with English audio and song lyric subs from eBay.nl for ~$15, but I know that's not the same as having a US release. Question is, do we really want a US release? It'd just include those two Barney-wannabe specials.

It's not, it's the full theme. And furthermore, the fact that it's a Saban show further brings things into question. For instance with Power Rangers even after Disney bought the franchise Saban maintained the rights to the music. So I can't fathom why he wouldn't have had at least the main themes from all his other shows covered in the same manner. I feel like there has to be some other kind of explanation for the change.

Well I know that they're doing the same thing with Transformers Prime. Aside from the complete seasons sets, they've also got DVDs with certain episodes that make up arcs from the series. There's the five-part premiere of the series/first season, three-part first season finale, a Target-exclusive with the first four episodes of the third season, and a "best of Bumblebee" DVD. Other companies might do the same thing too, even if you don't think it makes sense.

This is also the same company that's putting out Power Rangers DVDs. If you might be familiar with it, there's a five-part Green Ranger introduction from the series' first season to which they'd probably give that treatment.

Okay I'm only now realizing that the Next Mutation's "East Meets West" DVD is most likely the first disc from the Next Mutation volume 1 set. Maybe they really are doing this to appeal to retailers.

I got both volumes on DVD for just about $10 each. At least it was just 2 volumes. At least the 2nd set comes with the Space Power Rangers crossover with TMNT, and the artwork for both sets is cool, along with the music video and new theme song for the DVD releases.

Darn you Saban(punching table)!

If they re dub all the dialogue and remove all the cartoon sound effects, do you think that would make it watchable?

They already made the first like 5 episode one with East meets west.

Just buy the first 2 volumes and complete the set. And this is already watchable.

I made 2 custom covers for Dutch DVD's for NT: TNM. Every DVD contains 8 episodes with Dutch subs. Hope you like it!

I knew about that release. I even reported it. I guess they're just catering to those who prefer cheaper alternatives.

I don't find this show to be watchable at all, but that's just me. I tried watching it on Netflix and only made it to the fifteenth episode.

The upcoming "Turtle Power" release will have the two Power Rangers in Space episodes in which they appeared.

A question for those who have the original two NM dvd releases:

On the volume two slip cover it has a sticker that says that the bonuses included in the set are the two PR episodes and a behind the scenes featurette. Where is the featurette? Am I missing something???? There is a music video however. WTH?

I like that the only legitimate selling point they have is "The only live action series".

Next Mutation is getting a complete series box set reissue, while 2k3 isn't even so much as getting season set reissues?

Life can be so cruel.

I already have the two single releases, but if this has any bonus features (highly doubtful) I'll double dip & flip my originals.

I might get it for shelf space reasons years from now. Until then, hard no for me.

If only Shout! Factory had the rights to that series. Or all the other TMNT series for that matter.

I'm pretty sure it won't. The only benefit from this is freeing up shelf space, which wouldn't really be much. Still, even I'd get this if I was a fan and had the two existing volumes.

I wouldn't mind a Blu Ray set, but I'd much prefer to see an unedited set that presents the show as closely as possible to its original broadcast version.

I think my two-volume DVD set remains in shrink wrap on my shelf. :-)

i'm fine with the 2 volumes i have. i even got the "Turtle Power" dvd cause it looked cool, but unless this has the original theme and no edits i'll probably pass on it. but who knows, maybe i'll see it and have to have it. Probably not. i'm more of an impulse buy guy when it comes to this stuff.

The discs in the complete series set are just going to be the same pressings as the existing releases, but just all in one casing.
