View Full Version : Any other vintage collectors not interested in the new stuff?
Hi
I am a vintage collector, anything after 93-94 you lost me...The new stuff is too Nickelodeon for my liking, too commercial and bland...designed by marketing teams to sell as much as possible
The old range has little quirks and weird touches that are really cool...They are also less politically correct, less commercial and more artistic
does anyone else feel this?

completely opposite here. I'd say the new Nick line, at least the turtles harken more back to the vintage style with the detailed sculpting and all around style.

I grew up with the OT and I am also interested in the new Nick show. It is hard at this point to weigh both sides since the Nick show has not even premiered, so I want to withhold too much comparison for my part.
The original Mirage comics embody a lot of what you expressed -- feeling very authentic to what it was and not overly commercial. But of course it would have to be because it is a property from the minds of two men who never dreamed it could grow into such a phenomenon within only a few years time.
I don't agree that the OT itself had that same feeling. To me, the OT feels very commercial and safe. It's designed to sell toys and merch, no different from the Nick show.
Again, at this early date it is hard to say, but I am already getting the impression that the new Nick show is truer to the spirit of what TMNT originally was than the OT, despite now being owned by Nickelodeon who's only goal is clearly to make mad bank. The difference are the showrunners and brains behind the scenes. From all of the interviews and videos, I really get the impression that every aspect of the Nick show has been thought over very carefully, whereas in the OT there were a lot of haphazard changes done strictly to appeal to children
I don't know how you can say that it doesn't feel artistic. To me the animation is gorgeous in motion. The scene in the latest clip (the "pizza discovery" one) where the turtles are flipping around on top of buildings was pitch perfect. There is artistry there, it is just different.
Now as for strictly the toys themselves, I think the 4 turtles are really, really great. Each one is so distinct, despite all being mutant turtles from the same fishbowl. The articulation is fantastic for an $8.99 figure. Personally, I'm impressed with them. The paint jobs could be better, but that's a problem with just about every toy on the shelf these days.
The other non-turtle figures are weaker. I'm particularly unhappy with Splinter. I think the original Splinter figure is still my all-time favorite.

I know. I made some edits. I always view the "new posts" and didn't pay particular attention to what board this was posted in. Still, I'd reason that if he is not all that happy with the toys he probably feels similar to the show :p

I am in 100 percent agreement with you. Anything after 94, I'm just not that interested in. I don't like the look of the new Nick toys. I think they look generic. I do however like the new Turtle Sewer lair. I might purchase one of those for my son to see if he might enjoy it when he gets older. Other than that, there's no interest. I didn't buy any of the 2k3 line either.
I'm one of the few who doesn't even like the looks of the classics. They are a small jump a head in quality but I'm just disappointed. They really should have gotten someone to do some great sculpts. Maybe my hopes were too high.
In any case, you are definitely not alone. I'm a vintage collector on all fronts with the few exceptions here and there. I did buy all the NECA turtles in the many packaged forms. I love those. Other than that, it's been disappointing...at least to me.

yeah generic sums it up...I hate that 'big feet' style that everything is drawn in these days, and also the power puff girls style...just so bland and generic
the thing I love about the originals is things like the ooze, and all the ghastly details you found on muckman, general traag etc
these new figures are too shiny and smooth..a total yawnfest

Yes. I was born in 1984 and grew up with the original cartoon from the late 80s, so my interests are only in this origin. But it's good that the Turtles live on for younger people and collectors, they are still presently, although there were changes...

I think everyone is going to have their own preference, I was born in '83 and grew up loving Ghostbusters, then I moved on to the Turtles... Once the '90's came around I was hooked on the X-Men... And to this day, Those 3 properties still capture my inner child, and I don't care what form it is in... So with that, I have collected everything from the new Nick line. I think the new toys are fantastic and am looking forward to seeing this line grow! Will it ever be as big as Playmates first run with the Turtles? Probably not! But either way, no matter what happens, I am going to support my Turtles till the bitter end!

Very well said and i agree with ya.
I agree, I am a vintage collector too 1988 to 1995 (cause I like the Sumo and Adventures Turtles that came that year). No 2003 toys, Neca, Nick, etc. I think they are great too but they will never match the original toys.

I like the new toys! The old ones hold a nostalgic place in my heart and can never be replaced. But as far as the new ones go, I really like the detail, texture, movements, etc. PLaymates did a good job with these and I'm proud to own them. I do think the artwork on the card is definitely lacking in comparison though. And it's hard for my 3 year old to get the weapons in to the turtles hands. I don't remember them being so stiff and tight with the original lineup. Hopefully this will change in time as the hands scretch from use.
At the end of the day, these turtles only share a slight resemblance to the Nick TMNT just as the ‘88s only had a slight resemblance to the ’87 show. The same can be said for the 2k3. Playmates tends to do their own thing. In fact, I believe several characters in the original show and Adventures comics were inspired by figures in the toy line.

I am a vintage collector and do have a fair number of 2k3 figures and hope to get some Nick stuff when I find it at a good price. As long as its fun and appealing is what matters, not its age, and I am actually jealous at how good the new Sewer Lair is compared to the original. But the vintage figures are classics that have stood the test of time and are the first figures that come to mind when I talk Turtles. I am a bit of a nostalgist myself, but the Turtles are special in that they continue the spirit into the present with new and improved products.

I'm not a collector, but I grew up on the original cartoon and toys. I like the new toys a lot. While they could be a little fancier with the paint, I really like the designs. The new Nick toys were actually the first TMNT toys I'd bought since I was a kid in the 80s. (aside from a 2k3 Mikey)

I grew up with the original cartoon and toyline, and I never really grew out of it, I'm still obsessed with it to this day. I do think some of the 2k3 toyline was cool, especially Leatherhead, a huge improvement to the first one. I myself prefer vintage TMNT, but as others have said, I am happy to see the new Nick TMNT toys and show for younger generations and collectors to enjoy so the TMNT can live on.

I'm a vintage collector. Everything with the classic TMNT logo toy wise. I am, however, picking up the new line slowly. I figure since they're not too expensive I might as well.

I find the 2003 line pretty cool, and I'm definitely going to check out the new one as well. I'm not buying anything for now, however, no room / no money.
What I miss in the later TMNT incarnations is, however, that dirty, rotten and sick feeling many characters had, the villains in particular. They are way too clean.

The toy lines from 2003, 2007 and Fast forward REALLY sucks, however the new Nick tmnts are great.
Out of my way i bited the bullet yesterday, went to toysrus picked up all the 9 basic figures and they are great! Especially the four turtles.

I really like the new turtle figures and kraang but am not to crazy about the others in the line....I DESPISE the shredder and his ridiculous spikes but at least he stands straight instead of some sudo crouching position...nothing will take the place of seeing the original 80's line in the packaging though. Anytime I see that it just gives me a good feeling inside.

I am also a vintage collector. I was never impressed with the new stuff but the Nick figures are actually probably the best since the originals I think.
So I am collecting them. They are like $7 at Walmart. Cheap to collect I think if you really like the turtles.

If you like TMNT, should give the new show a chance. It gives you more things to collect and be interested in!

I agree with the older stuff's non-political correctness giving it character. I don't think we'll ever see one of the new toys with "eat pizza or die!" on the box, and that's a shame...

I just got all of my TMNT toys from my parents, went through them, cataloged, photod, etc. It really made me want to pick up the new classic collection. Same goes for the new/old Heman stuff I've been seeing.
i have to agree 100% here, the original vintage toys are far superior to any of the new stuff that got released after their first initial run, or anything that came out recently or will come out in the future. originals can never be beat. those unique sculpts that each figure had with all the gruesome details, they just dont make toys like they used to.

Finding the new 2012 Nick Turtles and Classics rekindled my interest in collecting vintage TMNT. It also led me to collect the 2003 series and Neca Turtles. Now, that I've purchased most of the figures from all these lines I have to say the 1988-1996 regular release figures are my favorites followed by the Neca and 2003 line.

Wow this is one of those threads that the OP manages to articulate my feelings for me better than I could. Perhaps cause I haven't really given the subject matter a whole lot of thought till now, but yes. I fell out probably around the 92 line and never regained interest. I think some of the reason I can't get into collecting the plethora of toy lines that followed almost continually since is that I don't feel closure with the originals yet! I missed way too many then :(

I like older TMNT figures as well. The ones from the late 80's early until about 1992 have a particular charm to them. Though I don't buy any of the ones from the new 2012 line, I do think that the "waht will soon be the orignal" variant of the Turtles 2012 from the are done really well and in ways are better that the original 1988 variant of the Turtles, but I am a nostalgic toy collector at times.

I'm a vintage collector mostly of all the unique characters. I grew up with them and TMNT figures where the most I had from any toy line when I was a kid.
When the 200X line was released, I started collecting ALL of them because I was thrilled the TMNT were back! Later on when I really took a really good look at all of them, I decided to sell most of them because I couldn't get used to the oversized hands and feet or didn't like the sculpting enough. I still have some left that I do like, for example the Turtles, April, Casey, Splinter, Foot Tech Ninja, Mousers that came with April, Hun, Shredder with removable armor, and a few others.
So I am open to new stuff if I like them enough.
I bought the new Foot Soldier and Kraang from the Nick line, but returned both of them. I may want that Kraang again later on since the pink brain itself looked very decent to me, but the Foot Soldier I disliked more and more every time I looked at him because of the shorts and t-shirt like clothes he wears. I have no connection to them and I prefer Ninja's to look more traditional. That's why I kept the 200X Foot Tech Ninja because they look more like a true Ninja imho.
The new April looks completely different. I don't know if I'll pick her up yet.
The new Shredder and Splinter don't interest me at all. The figures look bad imo.
I may want the 4 new Turtles because I really like the details and the facesculpts. They are easily among the best, but the oversized feet and hands and the 3 toes make me indecisive towards buying them.
Yesterday my local Target got Dog Pound and Fish Face and I bought them. Especially Fish Face is really cool and a keeper, not 100% sure yet about Dog Pound. These guys seem to fit right in with the vintage Turtles imo. They may not have all the little gross details sculpted on them like the vintage evil mutants had, but scale wise and fun wise, especially Fish Face is a must have for me. The new Metal Head looks nice but I haven't seen him in hand yet.

I'm a vintage collector. Have allot of the vintage line, skipped the 2k3 line in its original release but have recently purchased some items. Anyway, I love the new Nick line, it's awesome. Don't plan to own everything but I do plan to buy lots

i think each line has their own merits. really, the nick show is whats out now and the current figures are a great representation of it (well, the 4 turtles themselves and metalhead, anyway...) if the discussion is just about the figures then as long as they're good...why not pick them up?
seems like a lot of folks are not picking them up because of other aspects like nostalgia. :ohwell:

I've mixed feelings...i'm a casual collector...if that...and don't tend to care for owning different versions of the same characters, 2k3 being the exception...so, technically already having the turtles twice, and not being too keen on the nick cartoons' style and design, i was expecting to dismiss them...
And then i actually saw them :tconfuse: they didn't entirely remind me of the show, i don't know what it is about them, something about them just sits right with me, particularly their facial expressions, and if the articulation points are any higher than the 2k3 basic turtles, that'd interest me too...i wouldn't mind getting 1 of them, preferably don.
Another thing to come out of the new series that got my attention was the 'classics' line...that'd mean yet another "character repeat" for me, but their many articulation points seem really fun...now, the lovely sellers here in good ol' argentina are asking $60 dollars for the figure, so no dice for me x.x i may have better luck once i get some paypal and ask my friend in america to get it for me and ship it out...at $10 a pop for the basic one, even my broke arse could afford it XD
The reason i'm for the most part uninterested in the line tho?None of the other character designs in the series (shredder, april, splinter, etc) hit close to home for me, and i expect that to stay this way for the rest of the series.
I'll still keep an eye for it from time to time, for the sole reason they might reintroduce older characters, and by an odd stroke of luck it ends up looking great (The 2k3 usagi yojimbo comes to mind :tlove:)
As for the brand new characters, like dog pound / fish face...knowing me i'll probably be skipping them...i'd have to actually watch the show and become interested in the character to get it...like what happened with Alopex (except, of course, not a nick character = no figure XD but its a good example)

I'm a vintage collector as well. I bought a Raphael figure from Nick line, but was not super interested in buying the others. The toys are great, but they do not have the same kind of sentimental value that the vintage toys have. So I guess I have to agree that I wasn't too excited over the new toys either.

I agree with the original post - I grew up on the original line of toys.
I just recently started researching and getting back into re-building the collection I had as a kid (still packed away in boxes in my parents basement).
So far I have 6 MOC of the 1988 first press original 10 line. All 4 turtles (soft heads), Splinter (soft head) and April (original, no stripe.) Gonna find the other 4, put the 10 on display together, and hang tight for a while.
I gotta say though, the more I read this thread however, the more I'm getting interested in checking out the new line of toys...

i grew up to the OT just like most of you, but i kinda dig the new nick ones as well.. seeing as i got my son hooked up to it brings a whole new generation to love them turtles....
the only disappointment is the lack of articulation on figures like shredder etc..

In my opinion the vintage line is THE LINE, it's just the best and there was nothing better.
2k3 serie is ok in my opinion, lot of diffrent and cool designs with some exceptions of course.
I just hate the Fightin' Gear/SWAT/Elite Commando etc bulls***, same toy just diffrent colors, it sucks.
That is why the serie that i least like is 2k7 (movie). Oh boy, i don't hate this toys but man, almost every single turtle body is the same.
They just changed heads couple of times and add some minor details etc.
Nick serie? I like it but i will not collect it. At least not soon.
Reason? They don't sell them in my country and I cannot afford shipping costs each time they announce a new character in the show.
I am sure we gonna have toys of Monkey from "Monkey Brain" episode, Dogpund and Fishface in human forms, same toys but Mutatin' Editions, Armored Shredder, Ancient Shredder,
Feudal Shredder (From Splinter's memories) Power Krangs, Battle Krangs, King Of Krangs, Father Of Mother Of The One And Only Kraang you know what i mean.
It would be nice to add them all to collection but not now.
It's just to expensive to pay shipping costs.
Of course if they will ever sell them in my country, well thats completly
different story :D

I collected the original toys.. after that I would buy the four turtles only from the following lines... BUT this Nick series has me wanting all of it again.. not since I was a kid have I felt like that.
