I bought the $29.99 HD season pass a few days ago. This is going to be great.

you can choose to download 720p or 1080p, and if you have multiple devices, you can chose to download 1080p on one and 720p on another, etc., based on your needs. It's really flexible.

I think so, but we don't get the freebies for free

Zulithe
09-21-2012, 05:21 PM
the freebies are on youtube anyway. And they aren't that essential, IMO

Keep in mind that there are 26 episodes in season 1... so this is only a little more than $1 per episode! It's a great deal.

since when does itunes allow 1080p tv shows? They always said 720p was good enough, that was like 2 years ago but I never read an update about them finally moving on from 720p. Is it DRMd though? That would be a deal breaker.

Zulithe
09-23-2012, 08:52 PM
they have offered 1080p for some time.
yes there is DRM. you can play them in itunes on PC/Mac or your iOS device of choice.

You can also play them in Quicktime (this is useful because it has a frame-by-frame feature that iTunes does not have). Works great on mac but i've had very spotty success playing DRM'd itunes downloads in Quicktime on Windows. It crashes a lot.

You can also strip the DRM if you want to play them elsewhere. Lots of guides for that out there.

DRM became a pain for me with my itunes music. It's a deal breaker if I can't buy a version without DRM, and I"m not going through the trouble of getting rid of it.

Zulithe
09-23-2012, 10:33 PM
Well you can also buy an HD or SD season passon amazon. but as far as I know that is streaming only. iTunes is generally considered to be better quality.

I am not aware of any other stores besides those two. I would love to know if they exist and where.

And of course, the dvd and blu-ray will be out sometime in 2013. Even those have DRM! There is no escaping DRM for video content.

iTunes has added 3 more free previews to the season, for a total of 7!

105 - Green vs. Mean
106 - Meet the Turtles
107 - Sneak Peak - Training Showdown

None of this seems new, but the 1080p quality sure is new!

"Meet the Turtles" combines all 4 "meet character X" videos into one.

"Training Showdown" looks GREAT, best looking version we have gotten of this clip so far

if you honestly only have a notepad and a samsung phone and you absolutely feel you have to watch it on your phone, amazon is probably the best option.

go on amazon and search for nickelodeon ninja turtles... you can buy the episodes, or season pass, through there. starting saturday, of course

oh just re-read your answer, pal...I actually would prefer to watch it on the notepad, but my chances are slim I am assuming?I have the option to safe this thing on a micro sd card and watch it either on the note pad or my phone, does that help at all?

Actually I am quite glad we have a thread for the iTunes season pass Donnie D., because a lot of people don't have cable/sat for various reasons. It is a great way to get the episodes legally and in very high quality.

marcelangelo: can you please be more clear about this notepad you are talking about. i guess you are talking about a notebook computer? Can you describe the device? What kind of hardware does it have? What year was it built? What is the operating system?

If your computer can run youtube it should be able to run amazon video perfectly fine.

Sorry I do not believe amazon nor itunes supports transfering the videos to microSD card. It is a limitation of the medium for now.

Advice: go on amazon and try to watch the FREE videos. If they play fine then you are good to go.

thanks for all the work there, buddy!
yes, you are right it is a notebook computer..it is called lenovo ideapad, it has intel atom inside(no kidding, thats what the sticker says;)..) and is designed for microsoft windows xp....I don't know when it was fabricated but it was fairly new I believe..bought it in spring from a friend who himself bought it I think last year sometime...

just checked your links but they don't work for me since amazon tells me you must be us citizen to see the content/or rather use us based credit cards to pay for that...;)

youtube videos I can watch just fine...

well, if the episodes you are receiving with such a tv pass can't be saved on a micro sd card or such a devise does this in end effect mean you don't actually OWN what you are paying for then?you just pay for the possibillity to watch them and thats that?

even when you buy a cd you don't own what is on it. you can't for example use the songs in a movie you make. you are only licensing them for specific, non-commercial personal uses. when you buy a tv show/movie digitally from an online store you can watch it as much as you want, but there are always restrictions on how you can watch it, for example it probably requires certain software or hardware. This is really no different from any other form of purchasing. You can't play a blu-ray on your phone, for example.

sorry I do not think i can assist you further. my advice is to find a website that sells digital movies and tv shows in your country and look there. or wait for dvd/blu-ray, or just watch them on tv when they air in your country.

actually you can burn your itunes videos to DVD, once you do this the DRM Is removed. it is the most common way of removing DRM from itunes files.

however this has the obvious disadvantages of taking both more time and wasting lots of blank disks

With such sophisticated technology, I don't know why companies can just give away their shows for free, ever since the days of VHS and Beta allowed people to record TV whenever they wished (unless if it contains bonus content that never aired on TV, in which it makes such a purchase worthwhile). Even though it makes it more convenient, I'd like for the sake of tradition to watch new episodes on a TV that is offline and catching the show at the scheduled time if possible. Still, burning onto DVDs is much cheaper (you can get about 100 on eBay for like 20 bucks). That's how I watch my OT and 4kids tapes, so I don't damage the officials. I'd like to have a physical presence since digital files are always prone to being deleted.

well, i know how I am, there is no way i would be awake saturday morning when the episodes usually air, so even if I did have cable/sat, i could not watch them when they first air :p not without a lot of effort! but to those that can, that's awesome. I agree, there is a special feeling you get when you are watching something and you know it is the very first time it is being shown and hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of others are watching it at the same time.

For prime-time tv, I can usually arrange that :p

Anyway, if you have a DVR you are pretty much set... you can just record them and configure your DVR to never delete them... now all we need are apps on our smartphones/tablets/PCs to stream content from our dvr from anywhere... that would be a dream come true... until then, I guess i'll be using iTunes, at least for some shows

In the Donatello mini series entry, he encounters a scientist with the handle kirby fan, is this a cross reference, I didn't understand that reference when I read it in the comic. I was thinking, why are they mentioning a Nintendo character?

marcelangelo
09-25-2012, 04:23 AM
no, kirby is a reference to jack 'the king' kirby..one of comic history's most important and influental people...in the first donatello micro series from mirage comics back in the 80s, donatello met a man named kirby in the basement of april's apartment building and they expereinced quite an adventure.later in the vol4 comics he was linked to the back story of april in a small way again...(basically something he used in the micro was brought back)...
kevin eastman and peter laird gave their character the name kirby was a bow to one of their great heroes, jack kirby..also jack at the time the first micro was done and released was facing court trials that should get him back the rights to all the characters and stories he did for both marvel and dc...
kevin and peter wanted to donate all the money that was earned through the donatello comic to add to jacks court costs but he gratiously denied that and instead gave his blessings on them using his likeness and name for the don micro..

I'm really thinking about getting them on i tunes, I had kept all the 4 kids episodes in the DVR for the longest time and then it broke and I lost them all that really sucked.:ohwell: I have lost another two DVR's after that and lost all my shows, so beware of this method.
But at the same time I also have to think that if the eps come out on DVD or blue ray etc..I'm going to have to buy them again.:-?

Zulithe

it's only $30... about $1.10 per episode... you won't miss the money :p and the quality on itunes is better than most cable/sat providers who compress the stream pretty badly in most cases.

This is good know. So this would make it possible to make a DVD, ripped the DVD to your PC and then have the eps DMR free for you to be able to watch them on anything. That's how I assume it would work.

With both Amazon and iTunes, the episodes are available the next day. I bought the season pass on Amazon, myself. For those that are interested, as long as it's the same process as their movies, you can either stream the video OR download the file to your computer (the file will play using an Amazon Video Player).

I chose the Amazon method simply because I can watch it on more of my devices. PS3, blu-ray player, PC and iPad can all play Amazon video, whereas I don't have any way to watch iTunes videos on my TV I don't think.

I'm excited to get the video tomorrow, as I have standard def cable which looks pretty blurry and bad on my HDTV. So while I saw the ep today, tomorrow I get to see it again, only much prettier!

Kinda bummed that the first episode isn't available on iTunes yet, but whatever. Normally it wouldn't bother me because I'm always behind on watching TV shows anyway, but since today was the debut of the new show I was kinda hoping it would be there all ready to be watched. Ah well.

If it really does become available tomorrow, then that's no biggie. Guess I'll keep my hopes up. $30 was a lot considering I plan to also purchase the DVDs in the future, though.

Rise of the Turtles Pt 1 (886.7MB / 1080p)
Rise of the Turtles Pt 2 (981.2MB / 1080p)
The Mutation of A Scene: Rise of the Turtles Part 1 (125MB)

720p and SD versions obviously will be smaller. I'll post screencaps when I can!

I bought 30€ worth of iTunes gift cards to get myself a season pass, and it wouldn't let me buy it because the show is not available in my region. I've tried everything.

I can see why they do that, but it's completely uneffective if they're trying to stop viewers outside the Us from watching the show, and they could be making lots more of money selling the product worlwide. Kids would still watch it when it airs on TV, I would still watch it, not to mention the little fortunes some of us spend on TMNT merchandising.

I'm seriously bummed by this.

Hey guys just a heads up. If you plan on ever taking screenshots from your turtles videos do NOT buy the iTunes version.

No matter how you take a screenshot, even if you use the keyboard shortcuts, it will only create a blank image. This is a result of the DRM on the videos which all itunes movies and tv shows have.

This is on mac, on PC I tried and it takes screenshots fine.

Just know what you are getting into. If you only use a mac I would think very hard before purchasing. The video quality is great but it comes at a cost.

The future sure is scary... imagine in just a handful of years most movies/tv shows will be purchased digitally and we are at the mercy of whatever DRM they try to push on us that prevent fair use such as simple screenshots that you see covering the entire internet already. It's such a common and harmless thing and yet we aren't even allowed to do that.

We shall see. the fact that they chose to call it volume 1 rather than season 1 could definitely be a sign of that. If they split it, I will decide on rather it is worth buying the second half depending on how much I like the first half. Way too early for me to say.

I reached out to Nick about this issue on twitter a few days ago. Have not gotten a response.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me too much with TMNT as the UK is only 2 days behind (sucks we can't buy the uncut US version though) but for some other shows where there can be a six month plus wait it's just plain stupid.

I mean I get that there are licensing deals and stuff in the background, but at the end of the day when studios are complaining about piracy that background stuff doesn't matter. You don't turn away a customer who wants to pay for a legal download, because the pirates are perfectly happy to offer that person the episode for free and they don't care which country you live in.

But this isn't a Nick problem, this is an industry wide problem. In today's era of social networking and instant access region locking just doesn't cut it anymore. If the studios are serious about tackling the causes of piracy then they need to go day and date digital worldwide with no region locking. By turning away customers who want to pay for their product simply based on where they live the studios are only adding to the problem.

Oculus Orbus
10-11-2012, 09:38 AM
Right. I guess they'll have to give up on that at some point, but they're already pretty late, if you ask me. Just for the record, all of the shops I've checked online to get the toys are not allowed to ship outside the US either.

What is the approximate file size for both the HD and SD itunes episodes?

HD 720p is about 750 megs, and SD would probably be around 450. I think the large file sizes are due to the odd codecs and DRM used.

Zulithe
10-18-2012, 07:08 PM
The 1080p varies in size of course depending on the running time but so far around 850 - 900MB per 30 minute episode. They are roughly 970KBPS AVC video with 128kbps AAC audio (this could be wrong, the audio is probably variable bitrate but can't tell for sure). DRM'd of course.

This is roughly 5mbit/s which is quite good for a digital file

all of them (SD/720/1080) also have embedded closed captioning (subtitles)

until the blu-rays are out it is unlikely we'll get better quality. Can't wait to get the blu-rays!!!

Thanks for the file size postings, wow they are a lot bigger than I expected! There is definitely no way the entire series will fit on most devices, perhaps not even the first season!

I still tempted to get the itunes "season" but definitely not without knowing how many episodes I will actually receive. They really should tell you this information ahead of time!

most of the time i ask @tmntmaster a question on twitter.. he replies..but every time i ask him about this volume 1 thing.. he keeps quiet.. i wont be surprised if season 1 is split into 2 or 3 volumes.. which is why i haven't bought it as well.. am watching it illegally for now, and will import the blu ray when they release it. I do the same for Transformers Prime, since we still haven't gotten that show over here.

As someone else mentioned in another thread it looks as if Viacom is only allowing the first 3 episodes to be viewable on Nick.com, which really sucks, especially for those of us who don't care to use iTunes

At least you guys have the option of the uncut episodes on iTunes! I really want to see the series in HD so I was going to get an iTunes pass, but the UK episodes are cut and I'm not paying for cut episodes. Striking to the watching the show in SD on TV, I'll grab the US blu-rays when they're released for the uncut HD versions.

If I were you I'd just acquire 720p tv rips and buy the blu-rays when possible. It is a man's duty to disobey any unjust law ;)

After the pilot I'm not sure but from the pilot, Mikey's first "mom" line (making the second seem really strange) and pretty much all use of Mikey's kusurigama apart from with the Kraang in the alley. I think there was more but can't remember what everyone said.

After that I think most people just download them so there's been no comparison.

My original plan was to watch on TV (SD) and then buy the iTunes HD episodes and then the Blu-Ray season sets. Now I'm just watching the episodes on TV and will import the US Blu-Rays when they come out.

I could download it, but (so far) the edits haven't been that bad and with only 2 days between US and UK airings it doesn't seem worth it. Plus it gives me something new to look forward to when the Blu-Rays come out.

I'm still supporting the show on TV and (US) Blu-Ray, but the edits have cost them an iTunes buyer (and lost a UK Blu-Ray sale).

That's so weird. Why would they cut out the first "mom" line but leave the 2nd one in?

No idea! I'd seen the US preview clip quite a bit so didn't actually notice it was missing at first so the ending seemed fine, but then I read it was missing so I re-watched the episode and Mikey's "mom" line at the end of part 1 makes no sense at all in the UK version because of that cut.

I asked about it on twitter but got no reply, which I kinda expected. We all know it's cut but Nick aren't gonna advertise that fact on twitter on the day the show starts! I asked if the UK iTunes episodes would be UK cut or US uncut, no reply = no buy.

Curious question:

To the iTune users out there has "Monkey Brains" been posted yet?? Because it hasn't been posted on Amazon and it's about 24 late from when they usually would post it and I am getting very annoyed! :tlol:

Itunes sent me "Monkey Brains" this morning. I haven't used Amazon, so I'm not sure what their deal is.

Thanks for replying. If I don't have it by tomorrow I am going to e-mail Amazon to complain. Usually they post the episode around 4:30 AM on Sunday mornings (I work overnights :tlol:) so I have no clue what their deal is this week!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but thought this would be better than creating a new one. I'm hosting a Nick TMNT party and want to air the show in HD. I have them all saved on my DVR but they have commercials that I don't want to deal with for a marathon party. My screen is rather large and DVD, even upscaled, does not look as good on it. So I went to iTunes and bought the HD season pass. But when I stream them (using Apple TV) they're only output in 2.1 audio format. The DVD and the OTA broadcasts are 5.1. And in my theater room setup there is a very noticeable difference with 2.1 vs. 5.1! Has anyone else noticed this?

For whatever reason when companies put their stuff on iTunes, they often make it stereo (especially when it's a TV series). Maybe it's to make the filesize smaller.

Just edit the commercials out.

Just edit the commercials out.
They're on my Comcast DVR. I'm sure there is a way I can hook it up to my computer and attempt a digital transfer to edit them, but that's way more time and work than I'm looking to put into this.

And of course, the dvd and blu-ray will be out sometime in 2013. Even those have DRM! There is no escaping DRM for video content. What the hell?? :o :x Is this real?

Can you upload your files into Final Cut Pro?
From there, simply select the ads and delete them. Export the files in HD and you're good to go.
The sound at 5.1 should be retained.

The DRM part? of course. Yes software to make copies is common but that doesn't make it DRM-free.

We probably won't get the episodes on blu-ray though, that was unfounded speculation... aka wishful thinking :P

Thread resurrection!

As we know, Nick TMNT Season 1 has 26 episodes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_%282012_TV_se ries%29_episodes). iTunes has so far divided this season into two digital seasons, with S01 being 1 - 12 and S02 so far being 13 - 24

I am wondering how iTunes/amazon/etc. will handle the digital release of episodes 25 & 26. Will it be part of "S02", will they just release it as a seperate movie, or will they include it as the start of a digital "S03"?

Let the speculation begin :( I am gonna assume it won't be included with S02 cause, yeah... companies love money.

They need to rename those Seasons. It'll get confusing once we embark on the actual second season and above.

These episodes are technically still part of the first season, so I would imagine they're still going to be part of the digital second volume. I've downloaded a couple Spongebob and iCarley seasons for my kid and any 2 part finales tend to be included. That being said, they may choose to go a new route with TMNT- who knows?!

Hope you are right!!

I plan on purchasing volume 3 (aka season 2 part 1) but if they don't include the finale as part of iTunes season 2 i'll be upset :(

In case anyone is not sure why I think this could happen... again, volume 1 has 12 episodes, and volume 2 currently also has 12 episodes... so will they extend volume 2 to 14 episodes or not?
