View Full Version : Anyone else a little concerned about Mikey?

As much as I loved the series premiere, I have to admit it kind of bothers me how Michelangelo is being portrayed as a total moron here. He's even more of a stooge than he was in the 4Kids toon! The most annoying part was when they were climbing the wall and Mikey didn't seem to get that the van was part of Leo's plan. Come on, writers! Mikey may be a party dude, but he's never been that idiotic.

I don't see how Mikey was "stupid" at all. He is unfamiliar with the human world, hence his reaction to the neon lights in the store windows, and he is eager like wanting to become the leader just because he says so.

In fact this version of Mike is just plain fun. In just two episodes I feel this could be the funniest version of the character in animation.

I admit I had a bad feeling myself. He is the "dumb one" again it seems and Raphael still smacks him on the head after Mike irritates him and it seems not to be exclusive as Leo shows. Townsend Coleman made me love the character. He was goofy and fun loving, but not the "dumb one". I hope we don't get a retread of the 2003 cartoon. Perhaps its setting it up for him to mature as they are just 15 and starting their mission to fight evil. I can go along with that just fine I just hate for my favorite to be looked at as the "dumb one".

That's because Fred Wolf Mike was very laid-back and it was just his surfer lingo and addiction to pizza that made him stand out.

Not too worried. I found him to be legitimately entertaining even if he wasn't the brightest crayon in the box. But I still didn't really see him as being stupid.

I can see the problem if he does become completely insipid later on or something, but as it is now (based on what I saw in the premiere I mean), I'm not worried at all. Yes, he was a little bit dumb, but it's Mikey - that's what I love about the guy. To me, he's a fun-loving goofball, with a lot of heart.

He's not even portrayed as being dumb and incompetent though. The other guys didn't believe him when he saw a Kraang alien, and he comes across as cute and loveable.

I don't often say this word, but I honestly think this version of Mikey is "adorable."

And maybe that's why I don't have much of an issue either. My wife and I came to the conclusion that this Mikey is naive, not necessarily stupid. Everyone knows how I feel about 4Kids Mikey, that by the time he won the Battle Nexus Tournament he was insufferable, and that wasn't really because he was "the dumb one" but the fact that he was way to cocky....and then at times a coward. For me this Mikey is just kinda sweet and innocent. Naive, not stupid.

I liked him better than I was expecting to. His jokes are pretty fun, so it doesn't get too annoying.

But when he lets Snake escape because he gets distracted thinking of eating pizza, I thought it was just plain ridiculous. I hope they keep that kind of stupid stuff under control.

He's infinitely better than 4Kids Mike.

While he's still playing a bit of a doofus, he seems genuine and just a bit overwhelmed by the things around him.

Also, he probably got more laughs out of me in the single hour of this show I've seen than 4Kids Mike did in the entire series.

And maybe that's why I don't have much of an issue either. My wife and I came to the conclusion that this Mikey is naive, not necessarily stupid. I like this version of Mikey honestly. They play him very childlike and naive in the ways of the human world. I feel like he is the one who wants to learn the most about it out of the Turtles. It also came across to me that he is the biggest one that sees them as a true family. I've had friends with little brothers and that's what he reminded me of.

I wil say I did love the part where Mikey faced that one Kraang right before discovering its true identity, but that exchange with Leo while scaling the wall still bugs me a little, as does that part where he said "You'd think Snake would turn into a snake." was a bit of a groaner. But I digress.

What made Snake turn into a weed anyway? I did like how Mike renamed him,the pizza bit was good, but they should know what pizza is just never tried it,and the fight where he discovers Krang. I hope that Mike is set up this way to grow as the series goes on much like he did in Archie.Do you think that is the idea?

I'd rather have a naive and confused Mikey than an annoyingly arrogant coward.

If Mikey doesn't get something, he'll ask and at least TRY to learn. 2003 Mikey would just brush everything off.

I think this mikey is more fun than 2k3 mikey. 2k3 Mikey is better for that show because it had a draker tone. 2k12 mikey is better because this is more directed to kids. Also he is very fun i thought it was hillarious n he let snake get away beecause he was hungry.

The only aspect which I thought stretched his ... innocence/naivety too far was when he didn't understand (or forgot) that the van smashing into the front gate of the Kraang compound and causing a distraction was part of the plan.

Sure, he didn't help set up the van, but surely he understood what was happening or at least should have been able to figure it out shortly after it happened.

Otherwise, while he was a little "slow" with some concepts (e.g. forgetting to watch Snake which gave Snake a chance to escape), I saw that as simply a lack of experience and an inability to focus given that he's never really been in those situations before.

I like Mikey's voice and the way he carries himself. But if there is one gripe I had whilst watching the premiere, it is that I felt they made our green party dude too... dumb.

It was particularily cringe-worthy when Mike didn't understand Leo and Raph's plan of using the van as a bait to get into the hideout. I mean, his remark was so extreme that it put me off a bit. It's not like he didn't pay attention to the plan or forgot how it would play out. It was like: "We wanted to make them think we were in the van" (Leo); "But we were not in the van" (Mikey). Really? -___-
Anyway, I'm hoping that that side of Mikey mellows down in the long run because it could become annoying.

But that didn't stop me from enjoying his character as a whole in the premiere. :)

For some reason, I found this, um... ignorant Mikey FAR less offensive than that of TMNT (how has no one brought up TMNT?).

The TMNT Mikey was like, stoner stupid. My least favorite Mikey ever. I feel like this kid is more distracted than stupid. He's just not paying attention or thinking ahead.

I think his lack of attention is attributed to his ADD, which was hinted at in his bio. People with ADD tend to not pay attention to things as much as others often do. They get easily distracted by things, which was what Mikey was doing in some instances. I think he knew of the plan, but maybe he didn't pay attention as Leo was explaining it, so he missed some things.

Well as I said countless times before. I feel like they're trying too hard to make Mikey an exact clone of Beast Boy from Teen Titans. Maybe because the person voice acting him also did the voice of Beast Boy. But if that's the case I don't really like that. Mikey should be Mikey not some other character from another show.

i think the new mike is very cute. all four turtles are still children. so while the other three turtles sometimes to pretend to be grown ups (splinter is a terrible father letting them fight aliens on their own) he seems to be just still very childish. i just hope they will let the characters develop and grow up a bit. but right now i am not specially worried about mike more than about other characters.

I have always been a huge Mikey fan, whether it was dopey OT Mike, Movie 1 Mike, or pre-battle nexus Mikey from 2K3. He's always had his sweet, naive moments... and then he's had his moments where you kinda roll your eyes and have an urge to dopeslap him.

This Mikey is the same thing, but.... I think his role in this show is also to be an Audience Surrogate...

In the study of literature, an audience surrogate is a fictional character with whom the audience can identify, or who expresses the questions and confusion of the audience. It is a device frequently used in detective fiction and science fiction.

In science fiction, the audience surrogate frequently takes the form of a child or other uninformed person, asking a relatively educated person to explain what amounts to the backstory. Clumsy use of this device is derided in the catchphrase "As you know, Bob".

In superhero comics and other stories with a heroic central character, the audience surrogate is often the sidekick of the hero. Like the audience, the surrogate is normally young, permitting the audience vicarious participation in the hero's adventures.

Remember how OT Mike would always 'break the fourth wall' and talk to us? It's the same situation.

Michelangelo is basically being used to represent and communicate for the audience. Little kids who are hyper, naive, cute and sometimes in need of a dopeslap. :P

I was a bit worried reading all the negative thoughts some people seem to have about Mikey, but I was more than pleasantly surprised when I finally got to watch. I don't catch onto voice actors very easily, so I didn't even make the connection to Beast Boy until AFTER I'd read through the thread, and even then I still don't have a problem with it. I think he was silly and adorable in just the right degree without coming off as over-the-top.

I don't know why some people think he's too immature, all four of them have their own immature or childish moments (Leo's idolization with his show, Raphael and Donnie bickering), since it's always been his nature to be easily excitable. Mikey's not my favorite, but I sometimes think he's judged far more harshly by older fans because his representation is usually skewed in favor of a younger audience, rather than a more serious take like his brothers, which generally work better for adults. But I don't see what's wrong with that or why he can't be a bit more on the immature without being deemed as stupid.

I continue to be in the minority with this show; not that that's bad, just interesting to me. I liked the show overall but I think all the voices are "off" and I honestly thought this Mikey was the dumbest interpretation yet. His voice also sounds the most "off" to me out of all 4. I like Mike in general but so far I'm not a fan of this version.

And off-Topic, but ADD/ADHD is a made-up "disease" the pharmaceutical industry came up with as a way to get kids hooked on pills the same way they invented "seasonal depression" to do the same with adults. My Dad worked in the pharmaceutical manufacturing biz (product safety technician) for almost 30 years, you'd be amazed how often they "invent" something that 8 or 9 out of 10 people have "symptoms" of, so they can market some "miracle pill". And you'd be sick to know how little they care about measuring the doses of these pills, as long as they ship. I've also had doctors admit to me they're "pressured" by parents and teachers to diagnose kids with ADD when in truth they're just hyper/drinking too much sugar and caffeine. That's what happened to my wife; when she was a kid, her mom insisted she had ADD and basically forced her doctor to put her on pills; years later her doctor admitted to us that she (and most of his other patients with ADD) was just drinking too much soda. She cut back on soda and quit taking pills, "problem" solved. Meanwhile the pills were giving her sleepless nights, depression, etc.

Sorry to go O/T, but knowing what I know I get annoyed whenever I see/hear people trying to legitimize a completely phony "disease". Mikey doesn't have ADD, like any kid his age he just needs an outlet for his aggression.

Why do you have to bring that sh*t here? It's a discussion about cartoons, keep your conspiracy theories and wife's stupid problems out of it.

I like this Mikey, he's very endearing in his naivety and overall excitable ness, but I am worried how close he's toeing the line to being genuinely funny and being legitimately dumb.
I was talking the premier over with my friend who's much more critical about shows than I am, and unfortunately, Mikey didn't make her good graces, saying she didn't find him funny and was in fact annoyed how petty he was when the others didn't believe him about the Krang, to the point of giving away their position in an enemy lair just to rub in the fact that he was right.

That's not petty. If she wants petty show her Clash of the Turtle Titans from TMNT: Fast Forward. There Mikey is all bent out of shape because some future superhero stole his superhero identity....THAT is petty.

Yeah, but that's comparing this Mikey to previous Mikeys.
I know that this Mikey's an improvement to previous incarnations like 2k7 and latter season 2k3 Mikeys, but that's because I watched them.
She's not interested in the TMNT "universe", she's only seen the premier of this show, with no previous knowledge of any other Mikey.

Good to see I can still piss off the Thread Nazi at random.

Cure, you have no power and even less reason to single me out. I rant. It's what I do. Pretty much everyone knows that by now. Aint gonna change. Don't like it, skip it, like any number of more educated and mature people around here do. You say tons of asinine and retarded sh*t, and nobody smart bothers singling you out. Instead of getting annoyed at me, go do something valuable with your time, like rack up your GamerScore.

When someone says something I'm disinterested in, I skip over it. I don't pout and make a scene.

He's just young and uninformed. He will more than likely grow as a person..turtle?.. whatever, as the series continues but I think they did a good job stabilizing his role of the four

Eh, it's only two episodes. That's too early to judge a character. I need to see more first.

Hmm, I know what you mean by a moron.. but common, he's funny like hell. I love this Michelangelo, got some good humor and he could deal with the fact he is'nt as smart as the rest of the group.
Yeah, he stole my heart.. again.

I feel like Nick Mikey is genuinely naive, whereas 4Kids Mikey was willingly/selectively naive. He's still cute as a button though, and I dig his voice actor.

I totally fell in love with this incarnation of Mikey. Maybe they did play him down a little bit, but he's young. All he's ever known is the sewers. Since it's only been one episode, they have plenty of time for character development throughout the season. I'm guessing this may come in to play as a story arc, where he will have to take things more seriously.

I just hope that if Mikey has a lesson to learn, that he'll learn it and move on. That was my biggest gripe with 4Kids Mikey as he never seemed to learn the lessons he was taught and went back to being a jerk in the next episode he was featured in.

I love this version of Mikey, he feels like a Teenager and even though he may be naive and lacks an attention span, I don't think for a moment that he is dumb. He brings up a good point in the fact that snake didn't become a snake, sure its wrapped in ridiculousness, but they don't know how the Ooze works yet so it makes sense to question why he became a weed. Not to mention how he came up with Snakeweed as a name for the enemy was inspired as well. He's young and his mind is a bit unfocused... That's why he's the wild card.

My main question for you all is,do you think he will grow mature as time goes on and not be as naive and goofy by say the fifth season if we are lucky to get that far? I don't mind it if that is the case, but its things like getting hungry causes you to lose track of the the villain and the neon hand/eye thing its embarrasing as a Michelangelo fan.

I hate to touch on the ADD thing again since it's a little off topic and apparently is a hot button, but -

That's how I took it too, is he's just not the kind of guy to pay attention to the full details. They told him what to do with the van to get it going in turn with the plan, but he didn't really pay attention beyond that. Also, I didn't know Mikey was supposed to have ADD in this take, so that's a fun little detail that I think fits.

While I can agree with you so far as the pills they make for ADD/ADHD being crappy things that they seemed more concerned with chucking at any kid that was hyper than they were concerned about them actually working (especially Ritalin or whatever it was called, I used to be on that), I don't think the 'disease' itself isn't real. At least, not to the degree you disbelieve in it.

ADD, at least, is real, because I have it. I no longer take any medication for it, and it did get easier to control as I got older, but even now I sometimes have trouble focusing on stuff that doesn't interest me, and sometimes have trouble focusing even on stuff I like. Even as an adult I still have moments where I'll just find myself way too easily distracted by something else when I should be focusing on the task at hand.

They DID like to call it all ADHD instead of ADD though, at least when I was a kid. I do agree with you that half the time the 'H' or 'Hyper' part they like to diagnose is usually just because it's a kid, so of COURSE they're hyper.

Anyway, just wanted to touch on that as someone who does have ADD.

Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I have to disagree with you about Mikey. I don't think he's idiotic, he's just very innocent and child-like which I love--and also perhaps a bit misunderstood. Mikey is usually my least-favorite Turtle because of how poorly he's written or under-utilized he is, but I didn't feel that was the case here. Nick Mikey has heart. He's the first version of Mikey in a long time that I've felt that way about. In fact I'm almost willing to say he's my 2nd favorite after Raph in this new show.

Mikey does act like a lot of teenagers I know in real life, especially at the 14-16 year old range. Honestly, I thought he was adorable and naive, lacking a bit of focus and inexperienced. I wonder if they'll make him connect more to the human world in later episodes, since I've always viewed Mikey as the more . . . sympathetic guy of the bunch.
