View Full Version : What Were The Worst Episodes of The '87 Cartoon?

Its the crown jewel of all turtledom, but it had its clunkers just like anything does. Which ones in your opinion were the bottom of the barrel in the '87 cartoon?

The ones with Zack and Carter/Dregg I never had but so much interest as far as supporting characters go,but these episodes are the ones in chronological order I did not care for much or at all.
My bottom ten:

The Missing Map-Zack is boring and whiny the concept of the viewer hanging out with the TMNT does not work and this is his weakest appearance.

Mr. Ogg Comes To Town- Mr. Ogg is annoying and his powers are well ineffective and stupid.

Raphael Knocks 'em Dead-Its embarrasing as a Rob Paulsen Raphael fan. The sacastic hothead goes into the light of day to do stand up? I like the scarcastic hothead.
Funny,They Shrunk Michelangelo-Its just boring with an ineffective villian mirroring a previous plot like Sofo will do later in Too Hot To Handle.
Donatello's Badd Time-Worst villians faced in this series. A family of hillbillies are able to steal the Turtle Van from Don and go after a ruby the late father wanted?
Nightmare In The Lair-Creppy Eddy and the episode concept just bored me.
Polly Wanna Pizza-It was boring and silly too me.
The New Mutation-Bad idea and adds nothing to an alteady bad direction that's full potential was never seen.
Carter,The Enforcer-I don't like this character and this episode shows why he is such a bad character.
Mobster From Dimension X-Boring,filler,God Father glob? The only interesting thing about this dull episode is the Bazter Stockman look a-like in the inventor of the protein computer.

Which noes did not do it for you and why? Its possible one of my least favorties are your favorites.

I probably have several, but since it says "Worst episodes", I'll be nice and only go with the two worst that stick out with me.

Northern Lights Out: The dragon robot was simply boring, and Eric's plot of a volcanic explosion is just weak ghost of the same plot from Dimension X Story. Another plot about global warming involving flooding the coastal cities first established in Shredder's Mom. My least favorite pre-Red Sky episode.

The Unknown Ninja: Are we really still watching the Ninja Turtles? This is that episode that begins the Dregg/Carter/Unstable Mutation syndrome that killed this show and the moment the series Jumped the Shark. Reducing the plot element to simply gold just shows how stale the series has become at that point. Carter learns the Ninja honor for nothing as nothing from this season is really Ninja oriented. Also, The Intimadators could just be REX-1 intimidators!

Absolutely agreed on these two. Their cardinal sin is that they're just incredibly boring. Either one makes a good candidate for "worst of the series."

Of course, I've deliberately avoided all the European vacation episodes to this point, and likely won't see them until I get the complete-series set later this year. Those could very easily be worse.

Raphael Knocks 'em Dead-Its embarrasing as a Rob Paulsen Raphael fan. The sacastic hothead goes into the light of day to do stand up? I like the scarcastic hothead.
Is this the one that ends with a taxi cab chase? If so, you take that back, sir. I thought it was one of the more entertaining Turtle-spotlight episodes.

None of the episodes listed are particularly bad, The Missing Map especially was a great episode.

Worst overall was the one where Mike turns human.

Donatello's Badd Time is my least favorite episode from the first 8 seasons so that one gets my vote.

I don't have much problem with those aside from the first of the two Atlantis episodes and Viking ones and besides there are worse ones like I mentioned above though its all in one's Ring of Fire, and Elementary My Dear,Turtle which are all pretty good IMHO

No,this is the one where Baxter's twin creates a device to use laughter to control people. The concept was too silly for me and it took Raphael's character too far one way that it did not feel right for the character.

Edit: Cubed, the reason I don't like The Missing Map is because the turtles should not have need for a map and know the consequences of having one if they actually have need for one. That and Zack's annoyance equal irritating.

Mr. Ogg was annoying as were the Badds. I like The Missing Map because Zach visits the Technodrome and has a lot of fun much to Krang's chagrin. :) My least favorite Zach episode was the one with Wingnut and Screwloose because as a fifth Turtle, Zach would know better than to let his imagination get the better of him.

Jet McCabe ruined "The Showdown" because of HIS annoyance however.

Season 4 - "Michelangelo Toys Around" takes the cake for me.

The animation is horrible. The Turtles are hardly in the story. And the plot is boring and ridiculous. There's nothing "ninja turtles" about it for me.

Which ones? I find The Lost Queen of Atlantis boring while not neccessarily bad and Atlantis Awakes contradicts it and its a fun action packed episode. Its funny how a similar premise has a good episode and a so-so one. I enjoy Adventures In Turtle Sitting while Back To The Egg was so-so for example. Its all about the plot around a concept!

The other European Vacation episode as I said above was Northern Lights Out. Mostly due to poor villiany. Are those the two you are referring to Jepheal?

I think its just the bad animation team and Raph's alternate VA that really makes those episodes seem worse than they actually are.

Rust Never Sleeps, correct? I will have to go back and watch it again. I believe it to be decent. It was a stretch to get Shredder in the same location as the TMNT,but the episode overall was done well.

The European Vacation episodes made me realize something a long time ago. Why do the villain enter their attacks on the same city where they know thier enemey hero is? Why not come up with an aelbaorate plot somewhere else on the planet? Why have Lord Zedd always attack the same suburb of L.A.? Why have Brainiac come to Metropolis when he can destory worlds? The list goes on.

As a kid, I thought it was patronizing that a bunch of people wearing red masks would be confused with what everyone in the media recognized as being mutant turtles. Maybe I was just precocious as a kid, I don't know, but I always found stuff like that in cartoons to be an insult to my intelligence.

It could at least be so that Shredder and Krang strike in New Zealand, and the TMNT have to leave the USA and fight as fast as possible. "My Brother, the Bad Guy" is nice, where Shredder goes to Japan in the beginning.

That supermarket clerk was an idiot for getting them confused, but then again the Turtles hadn't been seen in public often enough yet and New York IS a big city so I can see it happening. It's too bad only a few people knew the Turtles weren't criminals or menaces or those that did forgot easily thanks to people like Burne Thompson.

As much as I loved TMNT it had quite a few stinkers but the one I really hate is the one with all the music and that guy who always sings the worst was the teenager in a shell song it might have been the phantom of the opera episode. The only good part of that episode is Raphael's reaction to him "OH NO" which was exactly what i was thinking. By the way why is there not a favorite episode thread?

Welcome aboard the 'Drome,Hank!

The reason there is not one is everyone that will not list is a favorite. There are a lot more GREAT episodes while even with the best of the incarnations there can be stinkers so I thought I would weed those out and say the rest are the best!

I had a list from an older thread here, but I'll repost it and try to list reasons why I disliked said episode(s).

I'm going to start with the European Vacation eps. I didn't like them then, and I still can't tolerate them now. The main reason was Raph's voice stand-in. To me, it sounded like a Rob Paulsen impersonator trying to hard to be Groucho Marx. The eps themselves weren't all that great to me either.

Case of the Hot Kimono: I'm being a bit biased with this one. I'm going by my adult view of it. I can't remember how I felt as a kid with this one. The concept in a general sense was just too stupid, even for me and I like the silliness of the show. The concept is what makes it a "worst episode" for me.

Mr. Ogg: Annoying. Need I say more?

Turtles of the Jungle: I'm having a tough time describing what I disliked about the episode. I just didn't like it. lol

Blast from the past: Flashback eps are boring at times, but can be okay if done right. Blast from the past...meh.

Michaelangelo Toys Around: Um....I dunno. Just like Turtles of the Jungle, I just didn't like it.

Turtle Maniac: Just doesn't work for me. lol

Take me to your leader: Now, for this episode, I can give a legitimate reason for why I consider it one of my worst eps. As a child, Leonardo was one my least favorite Turtle (no, this doesn't mean I disliked him, just didn't find him as interesting or as entertaining as the others, and the same went for Donny back then). Anyway, to me, I felt that the other turtles were too out of character (sorta), especially Donny. Yes, we know he's the brainy one who does, at times, rely on his inventions pretty often, but for this ep, it was too much, and we all know that for many parts of the series, Donny has acted as the unofficial leader, even with Leo right there. I know they had to downplay the others to really show how much they needed Leo, I just wish they'd gone about it differently.

Nightmare in the Lair: Stuck in a dream...whee! It was just...meh.

Funny, they shrunk Michaelangelo: Annoying.

I know some others would rank as "worst" to me, but my mind is coming up blank without rewatching them. The Missing Map-Zack is boring and whiny the concept of the viewer hanging out with the TMNT does not work and this is his weakest appearance.Ironically, your reason for disliking this ep is the reason why, as a kid, I liked it. I thought it was ultra cool that Zack was able to find the lair and befriend them and hang with them. The list goes on.I used to wonder about this for practically any show I watched as a child. Why in the world don't the villains attack the areas where the heroes aren't as opposed to attacking where they are? I used to think this as a kid for this show too. It never made sense to me. I didn't have any probs with them coincidentally meeting up, though.

I loved Nightmare in the Lair. Most shows do a classic, "stuck in a dreamworld" type of story, and this one was quite good.

The others you mention are below average episodes, but not altogether terrible. The good thing about the OT is even the worst episodes still have some entertainment value.

I did not like him taking up episode space away from Shredder and gang whne its only 8 episodes long for some unfortunate reason. Though today I see it in a different light. There was characterization in these episodes and Krakus would have been a better character to appear than Ladnor and Merrick. It would have been better for continuity purposes as well as growing a character. I like the concept of Titanus and wished to see him in one last showdown which would have given us a backstory for him. His character had potential while some was realized he never got to fully blossom.

Wow,an average two post a year. Your definitely the strong silent type!

I understand why you lurk as a couple of posters make me feel that way. Anyway,I think Beserko should have been the lead villain for season 9. He did have that handheld game which featured him leading the foot soldiers, Bebop, and Rocksteady, and his battle machine The Annihilator. Shredder overshadowed him in his one episode. His connection to Krang would have helped fans accept him more and had more potential than Dregg. While Titanus needed one to two episodes Berserko I believe could have held the lead villain spot for a dozen episodes.

He is my least favorite tied with Carter. You know what is funny? Zach is supposed to be the TMNT fan hanging out with them so he is us yet is the most depised TMNT cartoon from this version. Carter is the older version is that to an extent and he is disliked more than liked as well. It just shows you the Marvin/Wendy prototypes don't work. Kids imagine themsleves not some character that is to represent that.

As for his episodes I think you can excuse Night of The Rogues. It was a mistake adding him in instead of Mondo Gecko, the Punk Frogs, Usagi, or others that could have been of more use and a better character to use in the all-star episode. I also have a special place with The Great Boldini, Rat King appeared and when I was in pre-school if no one brought a video the last 20 minuteso f the day we would watch this episode the school had gotten from the Burger King giveaway.Though the other three or so with him yeah I agree.

most of season 9 and 10

the final episode in season 8 was annoying helping that dude all the time.

i agree to the ones where bebop and rocksteady are just too idiotic and ruin everything

made it too kiddieish.

like super rocksteady and mighty bebop

mutagen monster w/ the cows ro bulls turning into bigger bulls

the big bug blunder i didnt like at all

foot soldiers are revolting could've been much much better.

While Zach may have been a bad character there was actually a good reason he was in the episode instead of any of the other Mutants or Usagi it was because he was human and part of the episode was realizing that they needed the help of the humans too and unfortunently besides April and Casey Jones it seems that Zach was the best they had.

Speaking of bad human characters does anyone else hate April's aunt Sleuth? To me I would much rather have Zach than Sleuth and that's saying something.

I think Carter was doomed from the start he came in at a time with a lot of change and was forced in on us adding a main character after 8 seasons is tough especially when your talking about a season with only 8 episodes that is following so many years of the same formula so Carter and Dregg really had a tall task that they couldn't live up to.

episode 75:"Name That Toon" &
episode 76:"Menace Maestro, Please"
Are, in my opinion, the worst episodes in the whole series just for the fact that they have Howie in them. This character is so annoying with song lyrics like "heroes in a half shell, not weasels in a clam sauce". Quite frankly not even seeing shredder dress as the phantom of the opera saved these episodes from the curse that is Howie.

the only other episode i dislike is episode 70 "Shredder's Mom". but mostly cause i like old shred head and seeing his mom treat him like a child just bugged me.

A lot of this series is a big blur to me, and many of the episodes I disliked were boring instead of outright bad.

And a lot of the ones that "looked" bad, I didn't finish them at all, because I didn't want to. The Mr. Ogg episode, "Green with Jealousy", "Donatello's Badd Time", the Howie episodes and the Polarisoids episodes...they stay unfinished. And nothing of value's lost.

I won't watch anything with Zach or the Neutrinos a second time, because they're annoying characters. I know it's cliche, but whaddaya gonna do?

The European Vacation episodes sucked because they felt very very phoned-in and rushed, in terms of animation and everything else.

"Night of the Rogues" and "Nightmare in the Lair"--how do you make episodes with premises that interesting be so un-entertaining?

"Splinter Vanishes" is the worst Splinter episode by a mile--the Turtles compliantly drop everything they've done and everything they've worked for to try and make it topside, without ever questioning the idea. They should obey their sensei / dad, but come on...it just looks so ridiculous.

"Landlord of the Flies" isn't nearly as painful as these, but it's the worst Baxterfly episode, or, heck, worst Baxter Stockman episode. Dull, badly-animated, and a little bit gross.

"Raphael Knocks 'Em Dead" is interesting because it's a bad episode that I still sometimes want to go back and watch, because I think Barney Stockman is a fun character. He's a one-note joke, but is so manic and crazy that he becomes funny. He also seems to hate Baxter's guts--I wonder what the story is there. :P

Buttttt the rest of that episode is the insane that's so insane it becomes bad. The jokes are just so freaking terrible, and even if they were meant to be terrible...does it really make a difference? Really? Nope.

And I like FW Raphael when he's snarky and cynical, not the "merry prankster" as he's sometimes portrayed in later seasons.

"Return of the Shredder" is actually one of my favourite episodes, if for no other reason than it has the best moments for human Baxter as he usually is.

(Also, the Ultimate Rat Catcher is awesome.)

"Shredder's Mom" is also great, because it gets to that place of so stupid it's funny. Except for the incorrect naming scheme for Shredder, it's all good. Krang must be the only spouse who gets along well with their in-laws. :P

Definitely watch the first Polarisoid episode, it is a classic. The Turtles being trapped inside the camera allows for some wacky images and a great chase scene. The second Polarisoid episode isn't that good, but the first one from Season 3 was amazing.

"Green with Jealousy" is also a hilarious episode, especially with Rocksteady falling in love with April. I don't understand why you don't "finish" episodes because you don't know what you're missing.

I won't watch anything with Zach or the Neutrinos a second time, because they're annoying characters. I know it's cliche, but whaddaya gonna do?

I may not care for those characters much, but they were in many, many great episodes that they can't be ignored.

Really? I found these episodes to be quite fun.

This is where I think most people would definitely disagree. We just had an episode review thread on this one and most people loved it, with a great Rat King and Leatherhead team-up and the Turtles trying to go their separate ways with Splinter keeping an eye on them. The Turtles getting jobs may seem odd, but when you consider all of NYC was aware of their existence, its not too bad.

I can agree with the rest of your choices though.

No worse, really, than Zach being able to trace the Turtles to their lair so easily.

The Howie episodes were by far the worst, though. Even worse than Mr. Ogg.

About a third of the series. The Euro-Cruise ep with the Rainbow Trans-Charmer is probably top of the list, closely followed by "Invasion of the Turtle-Snatchers". I'll think up more later.

Invasion of the Turtle snatchers was excellent.

Yeah, but childhood must last long on that planet orbiting Antares, if the boy was still a child. I assume they live very, very long (which isn't impossible for a living being, just look at trees on Earth being thousands of Earth years old), but intellectual developement is very slow.

Not a fan of, please forgive me if I don't say the title correctly, Poor Little Rich Turtle, where there is this whiny horrible sounding spoiled rich girl.

Mr Ogg - SUCKS!! Cliche stuff with stupid powers.

Anything with Carter, was bad, in my opinion.

Northern Lights Out, an episode I turned off mid-way through.

Both Hokum Hare eps, "Enter: The Fly" (the only Fly ep I despised), Zach ruined every ep he was in, "Night of the Rogues" had more problems than just Zach, etc.

I loved the idea of a villain group and its my favorite episode. Though Zach is my least favorite '87 cartoon cartoon. I thought Night of The Rouges should not have had Zach or Tempestra in the cast.Geenral Tragg was much more suitable in Tempestra's slot and why not have Usagi there instead of Zach if he never did go home as the title falsely informed us in his secod and final appearance? Punk Frgos could have been on their way into town when this happened or anyone else even the Neutrinoes but Zach?:ohwell: Also, the villains taknig off at the end becasue they were afraid of Zach,April, and Irma? The turtles,Splinter, adn Casey Jones I might understand IF it was two or them. They should not beat feet in retreat citing treasure was why they were working under Shredder. Don't hate on Night of The Rouges just dissatisfaction with the lineups!

Her name was Buffy Shellhammer, and she wasn't really spoiled. Rather, left in charge of the company by her grandfather, and then he died. So she was stripped on her childhood, and felt quilty to run the Shellhammer Company.

Most show have at least one "Upnhappy Rich Child" (even Kevin Tyler, in another way).

The Gang's All Here: One of the Turtles turning temporarily human was a very promising plotline, but it didn't deliver. I was more interested in meeting Bebop and Rockteady's old gang than seeing Mikey as a human throughout the whole episode. Plus, how did turning human made him lose his "Ninja powers"? Even if he had trouble adapting to his human body at first, they implied that he completely lost his skills, which is silly sense the Turtles didn't get martial art skills out of the blue, but through practising a lot since they've mutated.

Michelangelo Toys Around: Lame episode. People complain about the TMNT franchise relying a lot on Shredder, which is true, but the writers seem to struggle often at coming up with other villains. One shot villain or not, Weasel was lame as it gets. The Turtles getting beat by a toy manufacturer was quite embarrassing. However, Vernon's remark "Don't tell me they make toys of the Turtles nowadays" was kinda amusing considering this was made at the time the franchise was at the highest of its popularity.

Attack of Big MACC: Of the countless times I've rewatched the show, this is one of my least watched episodes. Must have watched it about 2 times at most. I just recall not liking this episode at all. Didn't like the robot nor the plot much.

Mr. Ogg Comes to Town: Another episode I've only seen twice at most. You know, as great as Rob Paulsen is, he sure has voiced some annoying characters in this show, hasn't he? Zach, one or two of the Neutrinos and Mr. Ogg.

Donatello's Badd Time: Losing your van to a bunch of hillbilies, Don? Really? I guess everyone has their bad days.

Ring of Fire: Poor researched episode about my city. I dunno what city it was, but it sure as hell wasn't mine.

Michelangelo's Birthday: I think this one is the definite worst episode of the series. Just a completely uninspired episode.

It just rubbed me off thee wrong way the couple of times I've watched it. Admittedly, the last time I've watched it must have been back in... 2004?

Second thought, I'll consider re-watching it

I can enjoy any 87 episode, but the worst ones are CLEARLY the ones from season four, and the Vacation in Europe season. The first three seasons had real story-archs, seasons 4 and 7 were just random Shredder/Krang plan of the week. Also the vacation in Europe season was just a PAINFULLY obvious attempt at edutainment.

Michelangelo Meets Mondo Gecko. Mondo Gecko was terribly underwhelming, given his origin link to the TMNT.

Northern Lights Out, lame dialogue overshadowed the promising new villain.

Mobster from Dimension X. A filler episode right in the middle of wrapping up the series? Bad idea. Besides liquid bad guys rarely fare well after Terminator 2 set an impossible bar for the concept. (sure totally different budget and target violence rating, but the association is just THAT hard to shake)

The one of the huge mutant cow? I think it was OK for what it was. But it's definitely not the strongest episode of the 3rd season.

The Maltese Hamster was a pretty good episode, imo. Just like the Great Boldini one with Pinky McFingers(and also Zach and the Rat King). But most weren't that great, I agree.

I waited a week for an episode and the story concept so basic it wasn't even exciting. At least that's what I remember.

The animation is fine but yeah most of the episode takes place on the ranch and everyone is chased by the mutated bull. Back in the early 90s I waited a week for that episode. After it was over I remember feeling so disappointed like "that was it?"

Even though I THOROUGHLY enjoy Pizza By the Shred, it must have a record breaking amount of random and nonsensical toy ads as well as the most serendipitous and wacky plot of any. That being said, I find it way more entertaining then many of the episodes of the series.

ohh this is easy. ive slowly been watching the entire old series a few episodes a night and just finished a few months ago.

the worst episode was easily the one where they wind up running around in a clown car or something and they fight a giant mutated plant monster in some kind of underground tunnel (subway?), i remember when leo stabbed it i think its the first time we see him actually use his swords

that entire episode was cringy...want to say it was like season 2

Oh wow, I never knew. Kinda makes sense now that you point it out. It never occurred to me how similar Gonzo sounded to Huey, Dewey and Louie. I think she also voiced Bart Simpson doing an impression of Marge once (I'm guessing Nancy Cartwright couldn't emulate her TV mom too well).

Seasons 4-5 have circa 50 & of that, and the rest is solo adventures with one turtle and some gangster or crazy scientist.
