View Full Version : Do you prefer the VHS or DVD copy of Secret of the Ooze?

Ordinarily I prefer to watch both the original and third films on DVD, but when Secret of the Ooze was released, they made a small goof with the DVD conversion. Orignally in the scene where Rahzar is twirling Michaelangelo around he calls out "Hey, Leo!", though for some dumb reason the line got muted out. Due to that little snafu, I tend to rely more on my VHS copy of that film than the DVD. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I guess if there's an error, there's an error. That one, I never noticed. But there really aren't any advantages to VHS. They have to be rewound and they degrade over time. I'm sure my TMNT tapes are collecting dust in the attic.

Can't say I've ever noticed. I just got the Bluray too, so I'll be checking on that later.

i just watched my secret of the ooze dvd last night and, yeah, mikey doesn't say the line. doesn't really bother me as its a totally inconsequential "mistake". until i get the blu-ray, i'll keep watching the dvd as its too much trouble hooking up the vcr and dragging out my vhs from storage.

After watching it on blu-ray I can't go back, the quality of the video is just so awful even on the DVD version.

I found the BR quality to be so-so. While film grain is normal is most movies, it was monstrous in the TMNT films. The company didn't even bother to ink in the blacks during Splinter's flashbacks in the first film.

Yeah the Blu-ray is as good as it has looked on home video. It could be so much better though if it had a little restoration work done. I thought the 5.1 audio tracks were great though for being as old as the movies are.

I thought that the movies looked better than they have ever looked. Yes, they could look better. However, I do think that a lot of the grain from the first film comes from either stylistic choices (the flashbacks), film stock, and lighting. If you take a camera, and shoot something with limited lighting, you will get a lot of gain. The problem is, if you take out grain, you actually lose detail, which is why people make a big deal about DNR, which tends to make for an unnatural, glossy look. However, besides the flashback scenes, the grain in the first movie isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. I recall that scene where Casey runs up to the warehouse looking worse on the VHS and DVD than the TV broadcasts. The grain was still there.

I don't know what people are talking about with the other two films. They look good, though I do think that there were some instances of EE, digital sharpening, and contrast. Granted, I don't have the sharp eye that many of HD enthusiasts have, but I think it is fair to say that these films do look better than they did on DVD. Just look at these screenshots!

Frankly, this is probably the best these films are ever going to look. I hope not. I would love to see an awesome restoration of the first film.

VHS for the sake of nostalgia. It was the TMNT movie I watched most on VHS, and despite the degraded quality, I still have and is my preference. Let's not forget the Burger King commercial, too.

it was a combination of style and budget. the film was also supposed to be a darker (photographic exposure, not tone). golden harvest requested that the film stock be pushed during processing, or lightened up, which also adds grain.

What you gain in the audio snafu, you lose drastically in 4:3 pan & scan. unless you're a nostalgia nut or haven't upgraded, I can't imagine a good reason why someone would want to watch VHS over DVD/BR. The BR especially looks gorgeous.

To be fair my VHS copy is still in pretty good shape. Maybe someday it'll wear out, but as long as it's still viewable I can enjoy it. As I said earlier I do prefer the DVD copies of the other two live action films.

I have to admit, I never noticed that. I have both a DVD and a VHS copy. I'm actually rather proud of the fact that the VHS still works, given how much I watched it growing up.

I might even end-up having two copies of it on DVD. When I bought the copy I have now I could only find the SotO DVD, and it's still the only one I have. I'm considering buying the 4-pack Walmart has for thirteen bucks. Anyways, getting off topic, so I'll be going...

I will rather superior picture quality to one worthless little line any day of the week.

So I wasn't imagining things when I didn't notice the line in the DVD version  It doesn't bother me if the line is missing though, it's one of those lines that gets stuck in my head and keeps repeating over and over again about a million times. The DVD version gets my vote.

Ah, VHS! Maybe they will correct it at some point. At least they aren't drastically changing the originals like they did with the star wars trilogy. I cringe every time I see spirit scene now on DVD. Bah

I still have the trilogy on VHS, but only for collector/sentimental sake. I haven't actually owned a VCR in 8 years. Simply put, VHS looks terrible on flat panel technology. I would rather miss out on one line and enjoy the rest of the movie with good quality audio and video. Although, as I said in another thread, I tend to not even bother buying video media now unless it's in an HD format. I now own 3 copies of the quadrilogy on Blu-Ray (long story) but have only watched the first movie thus far. I'll have to pop in TMNT 2 this weekend and see if the problem transferred. If so, that would confirm that all they did was upscale the existing DVD versions to HD quality for the Blu Ray release without doing an actual restoration like I have suspected.

I only have a DVD version and never watched it in VHS, so I can't tell. But to be honest, the only reason I have that DVD is because is a TMNT film and I want to have the whole set, but I don't remember watching it more than maybe once or twice.

You only ever watched movie 2 about twice? Usually people say they've watched it like 15 times.

I don't always watch movies, but when i do I watch them on DVD's. STay semi current my friends.

But seriously I have the first three on VHS and as long as they work i'll only have them on VHS. Then again I'm kind of weird that way.

Well, considering that we were already 5/6 years (depending on how you personally prefer to count it) into the 21st century when Blu-ray was released, this stands as a logical fallacy. The two do not equate. :)

Unrelated, but even though I have two Blu-ray devices I still rarely buy anything on Blu-ray. The DVD versions of most films are easier to find in shops and they're cheaper, plus my family who do not own anything Blu-ray based (since my brother's PS3 broke down) can borrow them afterward.

So back to the actual topic... I never noticed one little line was missing and to be honest I don't even remember that part at all. Haven't seen any of the Turtles films in like 4 or 5 years. So I'll have to stick with the DVD in this case.

I had not noticed that line but I do prefer the DVD since it has a better resolution. I wish there was a DVD for behind the shells tho'.

What, you mean Rahzar didnt say "Hey, Leo!" first? Cause thats what my SOTO Special Edition says... Kidding.

I have to admit I never noticed this either, I have both but usually watch the dvd version just out of convenience. It honestly doesnt bother me too much since it doesnt really add to the characters, unlike the Han and Greedo scene. kudos to you for noticing!

The VHS is the only copy I own, but it's been in a shoebox for about 10 years and I haven't owned a VCR in about that long either. I couldn't imagine watching VHS on my HDTV though...Even DVD looks like crap on it.

Whoa! Goosebumps, i might be a noob for being surprised by this but who cares, this caps have awesomely good resolution quality. Are Blu-Ray versions always better than DVD?

Yeah, that's the point of Blu-Ray. DVDs have a resolution of 720 by 480 (480p). Blu-Rays have a resolution of HD 1920 by 1080 (1080p). That means that when the film is blown up on your TV, it looks a hecka lot better.

That's pretty odd, haven't got either version but I am pretty sure the dvd is better.

On an odd note my Stargate season where they are on the Nox world it has no sound for Apophis the whole episode, I was going to take it back but was afraid the whole batch had the same problem.
