Ok. This really drives me crazy in other forums when people compare the Classic Series to the new Cartoon. To me it is like comparing apples and oranges. The main purpose of the original show was to appeal to children and not the hardcore comic fans. I think those who become self riteous in that matter forget that little fact. Don't get me wrong. I love the new show. But on the other hand I can see the 80's cartoon for what it was, good, clean tongue in cheek fun. I mean to me bringing up the topic of Old Cartoon vs. New Cartoon is bad form along the lines of Godzilla vs. King Kong, Joel Hodgson vs. Mike Nelson, etc. And no my intention in this thread is not to start a flame war. I just wanted to make my thoughts known on the either/or perception concerning the turtles in the animated cartoon medium.

I feel the same way. There is no way the comparions would be fair, the time between the two shows is to big. It wasn't ment to have a deep plot or character develoment, if you missed an episode, it didn't mean a thing. These two shows are from two diffrent times and have totally diffrent format. While the old show was about slapstick humour, new show is about action and story telling.
Its like comparing Matrix reloaded to American Pie. Those two movie can't be compared, but people can still say wich they like more. Some like the action genre, some like comedy.

I agree....the two cartoons are very good but they are from different decades. How the two shows are ran are totally different from the other one. However, they are ran very well in the respectful decades. The slapstick comedy for the classic TMNT cartoon was appropriate for the late 1980s-early 1990s. Whereas, the newer cartoon works very well with current times.

Yeah there are plenty of us that feel both shows were great, and served their purpouses well. I for one STILL love the old show as much as the new one. (In fact I start loving the old one more and more with every episode I re-watch)
I guess for some reason people tend to think, one HAS to be better than the other, it's like those conversations about which Video Game system is better. Can't we just say they are all good and have their own merrits?
That applies to Old Series vs New Series discussions as well imo

The concepts themselves were totally different.
Old Cartoon : A brand new universe for the kids to explore with the TMNT characters.
New Cartoon : A TMNT animated series that's actually based on the original comics!
Both are great! I prefer new one, though. But I love both!
BTW Oranges are jucier but Apples are easier to eat!

I love the old toon, it's like an old friend. The new toon is good, but I don't have time for it.

But the acidity in oranges gives me heartburn. :(
Anyways, I was thinking that Mirage should put out a FAQ, if they already haven't, concerning this very issue much like Best Brains has asked people politely not to start Joel vs. Mike flamewars in forums on their Official Website for the show.

The new and old cartoon are completely different because of the eras of when they aired. The old TMNT was mostly about humor because of stupid parents who complained about how "violent" it already was. I mean, they completely do away with Mikey's chucks because they're "too violent" (like swords and sais aren't.) I guess you could say nunchuks are easy to mimic or some crap like that but it's just stupid to get rid of them completely. I am very happy to see Mikey using his chucks again in the new series and he will hopefully keep them this time instead of using that useless grappling hook that never did crap. You can see how much different times have become since the old series was on which is why the new series is like it is.

I gotta admit I do miss the idiocy of Bebop and Rocksteady though. Actually I would have liked to have seen the Jim Henson Creature Shop versions of them in the movies, but then I got a good look at what a real warthog looks like and Bebop would look even more freakish than his cartoon self. It's gives me shivers thinking about it.

You tell me that wouldn't look pretty ugly and freakish in an anthropomorphic sense. :o

Hey just look at the pig faced freak they had in the first Power Ranger movie. That was most likely what Bebip would've looked like. Now a rhino on the other hand would'nt be too bad an idea.

Well just imagine that thing with shades, a nose ring and purple mohawk with a human body wearing a bondage collar, chains and leathers. Scary!

I'd think Jim Henson's Creature shop could do Bebop 100 times better than Saban's crappy paper mache creature shop.

Even though the "Old Cartoon vs. New Cartoon" argument has been beaten more than a government mule, you have to admit that it has spawned some pretty good discussions.

Oh, I can explain that. It's because while everyone else was out running around riding their bikes and playing basketball in their driveways, I was memorizing lines from the Ninja Turtles cartoon.
Because I knew that someday, I would find an on-line forum where I could unleash those powers on the rest of a Ninja Turtles-based society.
Or, to be honest, I'm just obsessed. That's what happens when you eat and breathe the old cartoon.

I think that's why so many people say the new cartoon is better. Remember the pilot episode of the original cartoon? It contained lots of fighting, and the turtles using their trademark weapons. Didn't see much of that afterwards. Why? Stupid parents.
Karpo_007
06-06-2003, 04:01 AM
I to think it was the parents. First season was uperior to later ones in Story, action and animation. Animation is explained by the fact that first epiosdes were animated by Japanese.

How much time passed between the airing of the first five episodes, and the second season? I mean, how much time did the parents have to complain? :)
Jephael
06-06-2003, 09:03 AM
You gotta admit, the first 5 eps of season 2 also had good action, not to mention a great storyline (the Eye of Sarath). It probably wasn't until mid 1989 that the parents started cracking down on all the violence.

I agree, second season was still pretty good, and yeah did had some action but the change in animation did show.

Yeah, this new show really did remind me of the really early old show. The first two old show seasons, the first red-sky season, the original Mirage comic, the first movie, the Archie TMNT comic, and the new show, all have the same cool old-school TMNT feeling! I love it!
Seasons 3-7 of old show and, the Secret of the Ooze have the decent, good but mass-marketed TMNT feel to it (actually Secret of the Ooze was kinda lame and seasons, 3-7 were still quite good but the feel is the same)
Seasons 9-10 (the other two red-sky seasons), Next Mutation, and TMNT 3 all have that nausiating "say it ain't so!" feel to them.
Anyway, that's my hiearchy, and my opinion.
BTW Jeph, I loved the sarnoth saga too.
Karpo_007
06-06-2003, 11:45 AM
Yeah, thats about right altough I do disagree with you on seasons 9 and 10. They are not that bad.
Jephael
06-06-2003, 11:51 AM
They weren't bad, just weird.
Tetsu Deinonychus
06-06-2003, 11:55 AM
Sorry, but I HATED seasons 9 and 10! The thing that got me through Next Mutation was that IMHO it wasn't quite as bad as seasons 9 and 10. Rest of the old show was pretty decent, however. And, it's OK if you guys liked 9 and 10.
Karpo_007
06-06-2003, 04:06 PM
Seasons 8-10 show the best animation in the series after season 1. And also the format is completely diffrent, no one shot episodes everything is connected. Of course this change began in the 7th season, it isn't that bad either. Seasons 3-6 are the most "mass market" like, altough they all hold few very good David Wise episodes.
Tetsu Deinonychus
06-06-2003, 06:14 PM
Yeah 7th was pretty decent, but Dregg and those stupid transformation powers IMO completely ruined seasons 9 and 10! No matter how well-animated they were.
Karpo_007
06-06-2003, 06:45 PM
Well I liked the fact the TMNT were outcasts, hated by the human unlike the earlier seasons. Got some of that original darker feel in it. But yeah, season 8 is definetly the best season of Red sky, and probably the best after season 1. I really loved to see the Rock soldier army in Dimension X etc.
Tetsu Deinonychus
06-06-2003, 06:48 PM
I would have probably liked 9 and 10 if Dregg was less of a dork and the TMNT didn't have those incredibly stupid powers.
