Welcome to this month's Artjitsu.

The idea is you take a photo/theme/question or whatever and RUN WITH IT. That's right. Using the topic below as your inspiration, create a work of art. Look at it as a learning experience, and do a careful study, or look at it as a fun way to express and show your individualism and go crazy with it. Stay as close to, or stray as far from the topic as you wish. Do a sketch, do it inked, do it colored, do it painted, do whatever.

A quick explanation of how Artjitsu will work:

Our drawoff will be monthly. New topics will go up every month, and you have a month to complete a piece.

This month's topic is: The TMNT in a diffrent time period!

Get to work! :D

A different time period? Or, just at a different point in time.. I started a drawing of the TMNT saving themselves from being mutated, but that wasn't in a different time period, just 15 or so years ago.

Nturtle

I'm thinking more of a diffrent time period, like in the stone age or something.

Nate

OK.. I got to thinking, and I'm going to use my current picture for a fanfic/comic .. I might make one for the artjitsu to, I just don't know what of.

Hey guys,

I'm a turtles fan, but I just stumbled onto this site last night. I've sketched out really, really quickly a pic for this month's artjitsu. I wasn't sure what to do, but I came up with a futuristic-firefighting ninja turtle. Haha, I know, it sounds cheesy. So, with my first post at the technodrome, here's my first pic:

I would absolutely love it, if it weren't a firefighting turtle.. the futuristic design is great.. I just don't like the firefighter idea. You definantly have talent though.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome. :) I like that the welcome comes with a mango. I love mangoes! As for a drawing tutorial, I'm not too good at teaching, or more specifically, I wouldn't know where to start. I basically self-taught comic art by copying Spidey comics over and over again. Once you get the basic proportions of a person down, it's only a matter of practicing the turtles' unique head shape and ovals for their shells. I like to make my turtles about the same proportions as say, Wolverine: basically short and wide. Perhaps in the future I'll TRY giving a short lesson on how I do the turtles' heads, but even I'm still learning how to draw them from all the angles. It's all about practice, and there's plenty of pics around this site to copy.

Anyways, this month's topic is really cool, so I decided to whip up another drawing. It's a bit static, but I hope you like it anyways. Oh, like my firefighter drawing, I just did it really quickly in between my hectic schedule, so I hope you guys don't mind the sketchiness. I also excited to see other ppl's drawings!

Also, I think the sketchiness of the futuristic firefighter turtle is good!! It brings more character to it!

:o Wow...

The Firefighter was pretty good, until I saw the 'knight in shining armor'. I have thing for knights.. I dunno why! :D

But I like how you designed the shell-armor, as well as the overall suit. I also think the medium that you use just adds to it. Is that an ink wash?

BTW... welcome!

Glad you liked the knight. As for the medium, it's pretty plain. I just used a pen and a sharpie to outline the pencil lines, and then used about 3 different shades of Prismacolor markers. That's it. Like i said, it was pretty sketchy, so that's probably why it looks "washed." :D

LoMeinHu you are very good how many years have you been drawing

Thanks for the compliments (and everyone else's)! Hmm...that's a tough question...I've always liked drawing since I was little. But I don't think I got into comic book art until around 10 years ago, just about the time the original He-Man, TMNT, etc. kind of kicked off. I'm a huge fan of Spidey, so I started copying pages out of Amazing Spidey, then drawn by artist Mark Bagley, who does Ultimate Spidey now. I've been doodling whenever I can since, especially during class. :D So the short answer is 10 years, but I can't really pinpoint how long I've actually been drawing. Hope that answers your question.

Keep the drawings coming!

Friction X
06-14-2003, 07:10 AM
That's awesome LoMein. I wish I had ten years experience, but that means I would've had to start when I was eight, and I'm sad to say I didn't even know what a comic book was then. I bought some Prismacolor to try my hand with a while back, but I definately don't have the hang of it yet. I am working on my entry, though.

SWEETNESS!!!! :o It's my favorite turtle Leo crossed with one of my favorite movies Braveheart!! Can't go wrong there!

Thanks for the compliments everyone! Always a big boost for me.

Yeah, loved Braveheart, it's an inspiring movie in some ways, but horrendously tragic. Poor Mel...

I did this drawing in hard copy for a good friend who is also into Leo big time and things Scottish. She did a Duncan MacLeo piece that I'm trying to convince her to put back up...

Trouble is, .. My digital tablet is wearing out and doesn't work so well any more. It's hooked up to my old system that has the scanner on it. I need to get another one for this new machine, but the one I want is pretty expensive, and they're going to flippin' TRIPLE the yearly vehicle registration fee here in CA because the government seems to have messed up, prices are going up all over.... argh.....

Okay! I'm fine, now.

But that is why I have to do the piece all on paper first and then scan it rather than sketch it and finish it in Photoshop. Can't control the digital pen so well any more.
BTW, I drew this about 14 times before I got it the way I wanted it. Thats why I like to use cheap printer paper. I have a box full of reams of it, so I can just draw away, and then grab a another sheet, draw... no erasing. Erasing is distracting. Dunno, maybe I should mention this in the tutorial thread? Would that be helpful for anyone? Heck, I'm always wanting to know what other artists do... :P

Sorry, just had coffee, a bit chatty at the moment...

HorseTechie

:o Whaaaa-haaaaa-wow! That's a cool work of art indeed, Aig. And despite the title in the file name, the first thing I thought of was Leo's MacLeo character too. :goofygri:

Nonetheless, I love the idea, since I also like Braveheart. The details in the plaid kilt and the sword, is cool too!

As far as the drawing tablet goes.... well, join the rest of us, who still have to draw on paper, scan, and then PS color. I have heard many thing about those Wacom tablets, but I have yet to invest in one myself.

Aignatius
06-26-2003, 12:25 PM
My current one is a Kurta 5X7 but I guess they don't make that kind any more. I'm now looking at the Wacom Intuos line... :)
I had to have one for the illustration work I did over the years.
It used to be clicking one pixel at a time with a mouse. I used to make my sprites that way, but was quite time consuming. With a dig. pen and tablet, it's like painting with real materials... *stifles whimper while looking at Intuos package*

I've got a thing for men in kilts. I think they are totally sexy and I'd love to get my hands on a man in a kilt some day.

Incidentally, I've always thought Splinter would like kilts. If he's an intact male rat (admittedly, in the cartoons you never see anything so he COULD be neutered), then he probably has proportionally sized rat bits. (Ever seen a male rat? They've got CAJONES. BIG cajones.) He would not be into wearing tight pants. I think he'd like the freedom and modesty offered by a good kilt. At least, a kilt would be more modest than the short robes he's always wearing in the cartoons.

 I love the ice age pic, the turtle's expression is priceless!

And wow... speechless at Aig's art as usual...

Here is my contribution, it's just a quick doodle as I haven't been able to find time. It was supposed to be a victorian turtle... but it kind of came of like the artful dodger in Oliver Twist.. more of a turtle in a book than turtle in history... :goofygri:

He's kind of creepy looking, too....

Sorry, 7th, but that DID bring a laugh.

Not at the drawing, (really, its not all that bad for a quick sketch!) but at its content.
He must have taken a wrong turn with Renet's rubik's cube, or something. Oops... :P The mammoth's expression was cute.

Gaw, love the facial expression in the Loola drawing. He reminds me of... ah, who's that guy from Oliver Twist... the one who has such an erm, Raphlike personality?
Aye, another keeper, that one! :)

Ah, the Oliver Twist character I was trying to remember was Bill Sykes, a mad, murderous chap. I don't really want to compare him to Raph, but he has those Raph kind of vibes... hehe.

Thanks guys! glad you liked the sketchy sketch!

and i was actually MOVING from Boston to North Carolina. It took me forever to get my int0rnet access set up down here due to a wedding in Texas and a phone company in NC that doesn't understand that people on farms need int0rnet hook-up too!

Aww, you were in Texas? Shoulda dropped in for a visit! :P j/k, let's face it, not only is Texas a huge state, but I'm frightening enough online, let alone offline.

Glad to hear you finally got moved! What's the new place like?

:) it was a short visit to TX, meko-chan. didn't have the $$ to stay long ;P. saw some folks get hitched and came home....

what's home like? wellllll.... there's 105 acres of NC wilderness off a dirt road off an old two lane black-top that's off a series of Route #s away from any major road.

boy howdy!

we've got a middle-sized creek that forms the northern border of our property and a series of meadows, new-growth forests, and some marsh-land before you get to the bit of place with the barn, pasture, gardens and main house ....

the place used to be a plant nursery, so there's all kinds of funky trees and bushes and vine and flowers growing around. sometimes in rows.

We've got 5 Labradors, 2 cats, a goat, loads of wild rabbits, ducks, free-range turtles, racoons, beavers, deer, a family of hummingbirds right near the house, wild turkeys, some signs of bear (but no sightings yet on the property) and more bugs than you can shake a stick at.

it's beautiful country, but very far from everything... which is prolly a good thing b/c on a clear night, you can see the milky way... mmm.... NO CITY LIGHTS!! No SUBURB LIGHTS!!

Loolaa

:teek: Sounds gorgeous.
I saw the milky way when I was in holiday in North Wales. Could also see satellites moving accross the sky, I'd never seen anything like that before because I've always lived in cities. It was cool.

How do you manage with all those animals?!
