View Full Version : How would you feel if the Turtles in the movie look like the Activision game?

If you didn't see the screenshots yet of Activisions new downloadable game coming in the summer, be prepared to wash out your eyes:

Everytime I look at these designs it makes me think of what the new movie could look like....or resemble. I hope not.

The realistic, kinda scary look has merit. I don't like it. I think it's darned ugly.

I feel like, for a movie, the turtles have to be cool. Because kids have to like them to make good money. Kids want to be their heroes. They fantasize about it. Can you imagine the Halloween costumes?

I wouldn't vote for it, but if it happens, I'm indifferent to it. Could be much worse. My only major complaint is that I've always hated nostrils on the TMNT.

I think that I would have nightmares. No seriously it's not even the uncanny valley that's straight nightmare fuel :o I don't know, as far as the movie goes...I think that I'd be indifferent to it. I don't hate the realistic looking turtle designs...it just freaks me out a bit.

The style is too undefined for a movie. The faces don't have a lot of personality and the semi-beak might be an issue to portray proper range of expressions.

This is very much reminiscent of that thread about that head sculpt so many got their panties in a twist. Their heads just don't have a movie appeal. They need to be able to have a wide range of motion and expressions to make the audience care for the characters and not to fall sown the rabbit hole called The Uncanny Valley.

Very lame looking and yes the first thing I thought when I saw these designs is that these are going to be what they look like in the movie.
Do I hate it or love it? I'm not really sure to be honest, it's got a mixture of yeah that's a ninja turtle with holy hell that's a strange face.

whats the big damn deal?

they probably won't resemble these characters, so creating a thread like this is kinda unnecessary. that said, if they do for some reason end up looking just like this (or similar enough to still elicit such dumb ire) then isn't that kind of a remedy for the fact that everyone was mad that THESE turtles DIDNT look like the Nick turtles?

at least that'd be SOME kinda synergy.

in general, i like the look. it seems like its gonna be a fairly shallow-budgeted game, so it's not like they needed to do outrageously awesome intricate designs, but this is enough to think they're at least trying something different. if the movies were to go in this general direction, im sure the designs'd be fine tuned and tweeked.

The face is bad, but I think the body looks good.

Vshen did some redesings in the fan art section, this reminds me of that, only hi looks way better.

Still, no nostrils!

No, I expect a movie that the studio is hoping makes a billion dollars to have better design, but the more I look at these the less it bothers me. The biggest issue is the nostrils which I feel are too pronounced, we just don't see nostrils on most versions of the turtles. Sure there are a few pieces of fan art out there that go that route, and it can look okay, but it rarely looks the way they are presented here

The head designs are different enough to provoke a visceral reaction from most people familiar with TMNT upon first seeing them. But once we see a more finished product, and more footage (particularly profile stuff -- not from the front) maybe it won't be so bad

I just hope that the producers of this game are feeling around for impressions from the public. If they were they'd have to know that the head design needs more tweaking and they have lots of time to do it. They can fix it now before release so that more people like it and it could lead to higher sales for them.

I agree with this. I think their faces in the movie will be the most complex they've ever been. They will be designed and animated in such a way that they will be able to convey every single emotion you can think of. These designs look very sparse once you actually look at them. However, I do think they are on the right track in terms of the "realism" they will be going for.

Honestly, I'd be pretty damned pleased. Obviously for the movie a lot more detail would need to be added as this is a toned down version for a game, but when I first saw these pics for the game I was all sorts of excited. This is how I like my turtles to like as opposed to the cutesy, baby faced version Nick has going on (which...ARE adorable don't get me wrong, but not what I want to see for a PG-13 violent action feature length film). If the new film's turtles used something like the game turtles as a based, well, I would no longer consider the movie a total loss.

I'd prefer something a bit more standard like the look in the first two live action movies but apart from the nostrils (which is my minor nitpick) I wouldn't mind something akin to the look in the upcoming game at all. As a "realistic" take on the turtles I like it.

That's realy not that bad. Face needs a little work, but the more realistic approach is not without merit. The detail in the body alone sures promise.I am assuming this is a work in progress, so it could evolve into something realy cool. I'll wait and see before passing to critical a judgement on it, it better be a blast to play. I attempted to mod the Argonian from Skyrim into a realistic Ninja Turtle and wasn't to successful. lol.

I think the more I look at these designs, the less I dislike them. They just took a bit of getting used to, and while they aren't my favorite Turtle designs, I wouldn't say I'd be super disappointed if something similar was used for the movie. There have been other TMNT designs I haven't cared for upon first seeing them, but I've gotten used to all of them and some of them I actually now really like.

Also, have to admit, I do like the two toed feet.

I think it would be horrible, my problem is if you are going to change something just change it all, it makes no sense why you would make the neck down look exactly the same if not similar, then make the head completely different.

I'm not saying It has to be like the old movie or cartoon, but if they are going to re-design, change it all while you're at it don't make them look exactly the same from the neck down then just have something dumb like normal human faces with green paint on.

Like with Transformers while I am not a fan of the designs, at least they didn't keep everything from the neck down G1 then just slap on the Bay stle heads.

Good point. I think even if the Bay movie used those designs, the faces would have been altered with more details to show all sorts of emotions. I already assume all the 80's TMNT fans would bash the movie to hell and back.

Y'all are lucky you aren't Transformers fans (although soem of you might be). Those suckers didn't look a goddamn thing like the original designs in the movies. I'd say we'd be VERY lucky to get Turtles as accurate as the game designs are. We'll probably end up with something like this.

You know those don't look bad better than the picture in the first post.

Different turtle types would be neat, I was thinking too if they are supposed to be aliens it would be a lot easier to explain them having Utrom or Triceraton enemies.

If they were just other aliens that fought them instead of being random characters that met up.

They look cartooney imo they need to look more realistic and serious especially if we are getting a pg-13 movie with intense fighting scenes. Still hoping they look close to original movie design but doubt that will happen.

Someone whose “friend” is supposedly working on the toys for the new movie posted this on the IMDB boards:

First of all his friend said they sort of look like this:

http://images4.alphacoders.com/784/78488.jpg

Then he said this: Yeah, he said they weren't exactly like that, but they were beefier than normal. Also, they were dressed differently, something about bamboo armor (probably from somewhere in the movie). He also said their faces looked a little weird, like they had chipmunk cheeks. A little like Leo's in the picture.

Bamboo armor?

For films that are already out, in terms of looking at a cast list and some of their trivia, they're your source. For movies that aren't out yet, always take it with a grain of salt, especially from complete strangers who use their message board.

Just thought I'd pass it on. I mean, yes, there's about a 99.95% chance its rubbish. You do get the occasional bit of truth, though. For example, there was someone on there offering info on the script about a month before it leaked.

Either way, it’s not unrealistic to assume that work on the toys would have already begun, as the toys have to be ready well in advance. I remember just under a year before the first Transformers film came out a lot of the prototypes of the toys leaked.

Oh lordy. Hopefully the bamboo armor is just for one of the many variants they'll no doubt produce to sell more toys. But then again, I wouldn't put it past Bay and Co. to pull that kind of ****.

That look might translate better to live action but if they go with full CGI bodies then ehhhh. The Lizard in Amazing Spider-man is horribly designed in my opinion but while I hate it he looks fine in the film. Though he's not the main character and I've surrendered to the fact that the people who make comic book movies rarely find the need to actually follow the source material.

They somehow think they can create something that looks better then character that's been around for 50 years with an established look. The only cases of them getting it right might be Ironman, Hellboy, Dredd, and arguably some of the characters in Nolan's Batman series. Though the producers of Amazing Spider-man aren't completely stupid. They recently changed his costume to look dead on like the comics so maybe they're figuring it out.

Some people like this look, some people don't (I personally hate it). I think something so polarizing should not be chosen for a new movie if they want it to be really successful.

a while ago a trailer for the new TMNT video game Out of the Shadows was shown. it was a little difficult to see ALL of the details, but i could tell immediately that the turtle designs were a little more humanoid than anything previous.

while perusing through DeviantArt today, i came across this image which appears to be from the same game. i don't know if the artist posting the image is an official artist for that game, but it does heavily resemble what i remember seeing in that trailer.

while i don't want to knock the artist or their taste in design, this style is definitely not for me :( i really hope that this isn't some kind of beta test for the live action movie designs. if it is...ouch. the production team will most likely get an ear full from fans.

i dont know what it is, but my gut is telling me they are testing movie designs :/

check it out!

I just showed these images to my 7 year old son and a few of his friends who are fans of the new toon, the OT, and the original movies. Without offering my own opinion, I asked them what they thought of THESE ninja turtles. The first word that came from my sons mouth was "ewe". None of the 3 boys liked what they saw. The oldest who was 8 said "they don't even look like turtles". They disliked the nostrils, mouth, they said their eyes look creepy, and they said the bottom part of the head/mouth area should be bigger (like a traditional tmnt looks).

I thought it was pretty insightful to hear what the true target audience of the new show thought of these images.

This is like saying if the Turtles from the Komani games (especially the Turtles in Time re-shelled) looked just like those in the '90s movies, so its unlikely that this will be the source of the Bay Turtles designs, neither is Nickelodeon's and their realistic versions that we've seen that grungethemovie posted. That said, I actually had a positive view on those Turtles that look different but still look very suitable (except for the nostrils). The texture to me looks much more realistic than the old movies with more detailed textures/shadows.
