EXCLUSIVE: Last week, I broke that Paramount Pictures had set The Hunger Games: Catching Fire newcomer Alan Ritchson to play Raphael in the reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Allow me to lift the shell off who’ll be playing the other three turtles. I’m told that Pete Ploszek will play Leonardo, Jeremy Howard will play Donatello and Noel Fisher will play Michaelangelo in the Jonathan Liebesman-directed film. Now, the turtles in the original movies were kind of interchangeable, stuffed into those cheesy costumes, but this is supposed to be a more sophisticated Avatar-like approach. It should give the quartet better exposure, especially since Paramount views this as a franchise. Megan Fox was already set as female lead, and they will lock the bad guy Shredder shortly. Paramount has already dated Ninja Turtles for June 6, 2014.

Ploszek came out of the USC Masters program and has done guest appearances on Parks and Recreation and Shameless, and he’s repped by Gersh and Principal LA.

Howard I don’t know much about, but I’m sure his reps will educate me shortly.

Fisher played a strong role in Hatfields & McCoys, and he was in the cast of the final Twilight Saga film and also appeared in Liebesman’s Battle Los Angeles. He’s repped by UTA and New Wave Entertainment.

Deadline Lifts The Shell Off The Ninja Turtles

"They will lock the bad guy Shredder shortly". Interesting. Can safely say I have no idea who any of these actors are. They should get a veteran to portray Splinter. The only one who's done more stuff is the guy who's playing Donatello. IMDB lists him as being 6' 4". The guy who is playing Leonardo also looks tall, whereas the guy who is playing Michaelangelo is 5' 9". Casting so many tall people can't just be a coincidence. I think they're going to keep their real heights.

Not Colonel Schradder? Has the alien story being dumped? :'D

I don't mind the cast, just do your best.

I don't know, I wouldn't get too excited. I believe they definitely haven't ejected the alien angle. Mainly because it was basically the plot of the film. However, the whole Colonel Schraeder thing could have gone the way of the dodo. I hope so, but even that I doubt. If they get an Asian actor for Shredder, then hopefully that should give us an indication that Colonel Schraeder has been changed. Can't wait to see who they get for Splinter. Surprised they haven't announced who's playing Casey yet. He was pretty much the main lead in the leaked script.

Curious about Casey, as Deadline didn't say whether they were looking to lock that bit down...

Cheesy costumes my ass. They're going to have to work hard to top the first movie. All the fancy CGI in the world isn't enough if the script is bad and the characters are off. I hope this new film DOES top the previous four. But knocking the stellar effects of the first film isn't very classy.

In fine with this. Noel Fisher's a good choice for Mike. Haven't seen Howard in too much, but from what I have seen, he'll do alright as Don. Haven't seen Pete in anything though, but he seems to be a good choice for Leo.

Except for Megan Fox as April, I'm okay with this casting news.

EDIT: Let's stop arguing about the Alien thing for now. After Bay said it was dropped, nothing, except for the ski slope location, has indicated that they have or haven't kept it.

Also, if Shredder is cast as an Asian man, that doesn't give any indication that it's not Schrader.

The only person I recognized was Jeremy Howard. He was the four armed alien at the post office in Men In Black II :D

The most I could find on Pete Ploszek is an old profile page from his college football days, as he seems to have only done a couple guest spots on TV.

Looking up these people:

I've seen Jeremy Howard in: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (he was Cindy Lou Who's brother, Drew), Galaxy Quest, and MIB II. Seems to be just a minor character actor. Donatello is his first uh major role. His father is Joe Howard who I totally loved in Mathnet and Square One! :D

Pete Ploszek...I don't watch Parks and Recretion or Shameless so Im not familiar with his acting skills at all.

Noel Fisher: He was pretty good in Hatfields and McCoy's. He's in Shameless with Pete so at least those 2 know each other already. But Noel has done some voice work as well. He was Toad in X-Men Evolution.

Interesting... Big news keeps on pourin' in these days...

I think the only actor I've seen at work so far is Alan Ritchson in Smallville. The others are complete strangers to me...

Now let's keep our fingers crossed for Shredder, Splinter (and Casey if he's in this at all...)

-Gollum
-Ceaser from Rise of the Planet of the Apes
-King Kong (2005)
-Half the characters from Avatar
-The Hulk (including Hulk, The Incredible Hulk, and Avatar)

These are all examples of characters brought to life using mo-cap with actors who are nowhere near the size or build of their actors.

I take it these guys are going to be in mocap suits and provide the voices. Unless stuntmen are going to do all the action, I'm assuming these guys had to be able to perform feats of martial arts in their audition as well as try out the signature weapons. Turtles that are six foot tall each? That would be something. Let's see if Pete can slice and dice with dual katana, Jeremy bashing away with a bo, Noel to pound away with nunchaku, and Alan poking away with Sai.

Oh, who cares who they cast as the Turtles, really? I couldn't even tell you who the actors playing the Turtles in any of the first four movies were and I would bet you the average moviegoer can't either.

We're probably looking at mo-cap and limited suit work for the Turtles when they're walking around/talking, and then either solid CGI or stuntmen when the "ninja action" is happening.

Considering the build of these guys, the fact that three of these are good-looking dudes, and that Donnie's actor has such a distinctive face and shape, I would GUESS that more of these actors' appearances will show through the actual turtles, than we're used to seeing. Like with characters in Avatar.

Sorry, I disagree with the 'they all did just fine' part...just my opinion though. And to me, voice actors are an Extremely important factor in making the film work.

Granted...Robbie Rist was excellent as Mikey in the first 3 live action flicks, & Brian Tochi was fantastic as Leo. Josh Pais & Laurie Faso did fine in the 1st and 2nd movies.

On the other hand, (just me, my own opinion), the voice actors in the 2007 CGI flick were forgettable/so-so at best (except Mikey, to me the voice was terrible in that flick)...the voice actor for Raphael in the 3rd movie wasn't that good...and Corey Feldman (in my opinion) is very overrated as the voice of Donny.

Feldman's voice didn't fit for the brainiac/scientist of the group. Out of the original film, he was the only one that I thought was miscast.

I thought Adam Carl did a much better job in the second Ninja Turtles film as Donny. A better fit.

I always felt the voice cast in the second live action film was perfect.

Having a great voice cast to bring to these characters will only help the film...but a voice that doesn't fit will certainly be a distraction.

It was never for the fans to begin with. Aside from, in a small way, the pocket of hardcore fans waiting since 1990 to see some form of Bebop and Rocksteady and Technodromes and stuff on the big screen... but I suspect even them will be largely turned off by what form they will come in.

I think they're too big and too good-looking for those things not to have been a factor in the casting. A lanky guy cast as the brainy turtle? A ripped guy who played a football player and a superhero cast as the muscle? An actual football player cast as Leo? Mikey's actor just happens to be the smallest guy of the bunch?
6'4", 6'4", 6'1" and 5'9"? Try picking four random actors and getting those heights.

It's all way too deliberate for these guys not to portray the bodies of the turtles. There are always stunt men, but these guys have gotta be what the turtles look like.

while i'm doing my best to reserve judgment until i watch this movie, the "colonel schrader - military spec force" makes me cringe, more so than the whole alien rumor. i dont like when Hollywood uses the military thing to try and make something fit. not everything needs to make sense to the masses. a Japanese ninja master would be just as plausible as military colonel and it's what anyone who knows anything about TMNT would expect.

I think it might be more likely that the designs of the turtles will be influenced by the look of the actors, and that certain features of theirs will carry through. Like in a lot of animated characters. But it is entirely possible that there will be a human to turtle transformation, it would be a unique re-imagining, that's for sure.

plasticturtle

I'm not sure how I'd take a human to turtle transformation. But I'm seeing a new side to myself with these rumors. I used to just dismiss people who got angry over changes made to favored characters. But I never really experienced anyone turning anything that meant anything to me into a major motion picture since most of the stuff I really liked growing up would never fly as a Summer blockbuster type thing.
But with the news on the new TMNT film I can kind of see how drastically changing something you grew up with can be annoying. I still think a lot of folks overreact and I certainly don't want to be one of those types, but I can see now just why some people get so irritated. It's one of those "first they came for the communists but I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist" kind of deals. Well maybe not that serious but you get the idea.

Not exactly. Reread my post. I stated that the example I used was probably too serious to compare with my feelings on the film but it was the only example I could think of. I wouldn't worry about any "human to turtle" transformations. Mo-cap is more or less about performance, not physical attributes. You might see a tiny hint of their facial attributes in their character designs, but really, what you will really get is mannerisms, body language, movements, eye gestures, etc.

i think its better than bad news that these "unknowns" were cast as opposed to big stars. not that its GREAT news. unknowns being cast is just news. doesn't mean the crappier aspects of this production have vanished. megan fox is still april, there's no news on what the script currently looks like, the director is still leibsman and its still bay's baby.

I was looking around the net to see if anyone else had that "why are they all blond and look like brothers" reaction. Good to know I wasn't alone.

My theories are a) They are humans who can "turn into turtle heros" when they want, spending most of their time in human form b) Turtle Mutants who want to fully evolve into humans, the "find a cure" plot, which for a third of the movie they become human, only for it to wear off when they realize the "value of their uniqueness" or c) As stated earlier in this thread, a family that is mutated by Shredder, and thus one of the two afformentioned theories ensues...

Or maybe they are alien turtles that have holographic disguises they can wear, which they acquire by scanning other humans, and we get the transformers rebranding...

I only say this, not to stir the pot, but just point out - CG is stil expensive, Platinum dunes is VERY frugle (google Brad Fuller, he talks about it as their business model), and if the roles were reversed, I'm sure you wouldn't hire Megan Fox as voice over Talent - although they did hire Katy Perry to play Smurfette....not that Katy Perry is much of an actress....

But an underware model for only his voice? What exctly are you buying if not his looks? He can't act. Forget how bad you think Fox is, find any episode of smallville with aquaman, the dude is terrible. Highschool stage play terrible.

I think we will see them on screen, as humans at some point. I really hope I'm wrong...but...

Either I'm right, or this project is so tainted in Hollywood, that these are the only actors they could get with SAG cards...

So you've come up with these theories with NO EVIDENCE at all to support it. You just came to this giant conclusion just because the actors sorta kinda look alike.

Do you know what performance capture is? It's an actor acting for the eventual CG character. You get body language, expressions and voice all at once and it allows them to actually be on set and interact with other cast members. It's not just voice acting. Pay attention.

On the subject of the Raphael actor not being great. Since when have Ninja Turtles movies been Shakespere? The best actor in the first movie was COREY F*CKING FELDMAN. Come on now.

This. Is. Getting. Absurd. It is motion-capture. That is why they have chosen actors who sort of "look" like the characters, at least in their attributes. For example, the actor they've chosen to play Donatello actually looks like a bit of a geek. That can’t just be a coincidence. Can some people not see this? They are not going to be humans who turn into Turtles at will. If that were the case, you can bet your life they would have gotten more well-known actors. Not stars, but not complete unknowns either.

I'm sorry, but the best actor in the first film (to me) was not Corey Feldman.

Most well known? Yes. But Best? Not to me.

Robbie Rist in my humble opinion did excellent in voicing Michelangelo. A good warmth and comic timing to his voicework

Brian Tochi fit Leonardo perfectly, a levelheaded tone to his voice. And Raphael's character was solidly voiced by Josh Pais. Especially bringing the the 'Brooklyn' accent into it.

I don't just enjoy the first movie ONLY because of the suits/animatronics. It's because of the voices as well.

Voicework can be as equally important and go hand in hand with the suits/look of the character. It's a 50/50 split.

You can have the best special FX in the world. But if you have a voice that's mediocre, forgettable, bad, or boring, then the character won't work.

And who says it has to be Shakespeare? I don't get why you immediately go to Shakespeare when talking about this subject.

Just because someone would like a solid voice to go with the 'look' doesn't mean it has to be Shakespeare. That's silly.

And yes, of course we haven't seen the movie yet to judge fairly. Not unless someone has a phone booth or a Delorean.

But I've seen things that have Alan Ritchson in it, and so far I'm not convinced with his voice as of right now. Do I hope the movie proves me wrong? Absolutely.

Usually, no one wants well-known actors in adaptations. We already have our own perceptions of the characters, so it's easier to portray those characters with an actor that has kind of a blank slate. It takes time to build a reputation, so a lot of the "well known" actors under 25, are only known for one thing, and have that difficult-to-ignore image attached to them.

@Stryker

Okay, I want to clear something up.
First off, I DO NOT LIKE ANY OF MY THEORIES as posted. I want to be clear. I would love an action packed, ultra serious turtles film. I feel the fans deserve a faithful, no holds barred, high budget, epic film, that really brings back the essence of the original comics. My personal take would be rather extreme, but I'm not the focus of the discussion here, and I won't bore you with any of that.

What I can say is this:
I do have a friend who knows Bay. I can tell you that his involvement is minor by comparison to Liebsman and Fuller. His focus is on Pain & Gain, and the future of Transformers. He's involved, but painting a bullseye on his back is futile.

The Platinum Dunes team makes no bones about wanting to make this a film for a wider audience, updating it, etc.

What I fear they havn't fully grasped, is that of all properties from the 80's, Turtles have one of the largest hold over fan bases of any in recent history. They seem to know that TMNT has huge brand recognition, but in this video here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5PGVKB2ObM&feature=youtube_gdata_player
He points out how they construct their remakes and why.

The whole video helps illustrate my thoughts, with TMNT popping up at around 10:15 into part 3.

I want to emphasize that again, I'm not trying to stirr the pot, rather, point out what might be happening, and if so, if we can find proof, the collective voice of the fans should be heard.

As to strikers statement about motion capture, and my "understanding of it"
Please don't assume. I have years of VFX experience, I understand it very well. For you're edification, it isn't important they the actor have ANY physical resemblance to the character. You can choose to bring the actor into the character, or not. Serkis was integrated into Gollum as a nod to his work as an actor, and to help shore up his career, giving him marketability as an actor "who does great motion capture work". It's marketing, and clearly effective marketing at that.

Serkis IS a VERY talented actor. I submit, that the underware model is not. Not on this or any other planet. Seriously. Beautiful face, body etc, but that's all he's got. Google him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVkx4JFlHek&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Megan Fox is beautiful, and think she's great in certain roles. I think there are many actresses that may fit the role more, in terms of looks and acting talent, but at the end of the day, in an odd ball sort of way, maybe she's an inspired choice, simply because it raised the profile of the film, simply by being controversial.

I hope I'm wrong.
I just wanted to see if any one else was thinking the same.

If I were judging solely by the actors, and the developers involved, omnimorphic's theories wouldn't sound so far out there. But they're wildly different from the script that leaked just months ago. A script that was dated way later than that video was posted. Many of us would loved to see that script trashed, entirely, but we have no evidence that it's happened. So it really seems like there's nowhere those theories could have come from.

Thanks Chrisdude,

Do you mean the blue door script from last August, or have you read a newer version?

I agree, the ski slope does seem to indicate that the riddiculous set piece in the first reel is still "in" the movie.

But I'm shocked that they havn't cast a Casey Jones, since he was the star of that script...

And Megan fox can't really play 19 as in the script...
So...
Kind of why I began to suspect the script has been changed quite a bit...

Ramboraph4life aka Matt

No, I didn't. Because I wasn't talking about the Performance Capture part of your post, Stryker. I already knew about Performance Capture and how it works. Thus why I didn't mention any of that in my post.

I was talking about the last statement you said, "On the subject of the Raphael actor not being great. Since when have Ninja Turtles movies been Shakespere? The best actor in the first movie was COREY F*CKING FELDMAN. Come on now."

In other words, "who cares if he's not a great actor, Ninja Turtle movies aren't Shakepeare."

And I specified that:

A) I didn't feel that Feldman (in my opinion) was the best actor in the first flick, I felt there were other/better actors than Feldman in that first movie.

B) That no one ever said it had to be Shakespeare, and it does matter to have a good/great actor in the role (which we will find out when the flick comes out).

All regarding your last statement.

So no, I didn't miss your entire point.

It is very odd that they're shooting, and we haven't found out who he is. Of course, the turtles actors' names were leaked. Only Megan Fox was properly announced. It's at least possible that they have a Casey, and no one's let the cat out of the bag.

But , over all, it's just such a distinctive type of location for something like TMNT. It's hard to imagine it not serving the same purpose.

@Chrisdude

I agree, except for the fact that Ritchson confirmed his involvement via Twitter.

To be shooting in a few weeks and no Lead named, is very odd in today's film world.

Also, if the script is as good as Eastman keeps saying, why not leak some of the "awesomeness" to build hype. The studio can't possibly be thrilled with all the negative press.

Makes me think April is the lead... Or Raphael.

Also makes me suspect that there is some kind of love nearest between April and Ralph - which would be terrible.

chrisdude
03-30-2013, 09:38 PM
Ritchson confirmed after his name got out, though. So did Noel Fisher. The other two guys don't appear to be on twitter...

There has to be a love story, because it's a movie. So it's possible there could be something with one of the turtles, if there is no Casey. I would doubt it, but only on account that it's strange...

Bob
03-31-2013, 09:22 AM
Splinter, Shredder (or whatever they end up calling him) and possibly Casey still need to be cast. Well, they've more than likely already been cast, Paramount just haven't gone public with it. Casey is an odd one, though. In the leaked script he was the lead. He had a considerably larger role than April, so it’s odd they haven't announced who's playing him yet. I would say there's a good bet that Casey and April's roles have been reversed somewhat, with April now being the lead.

I would think that in the next couple of weeks the principle cast will be rounded out.

Reports said that the shooting at the ski slope was going to be three days, so they're probably done. In a local news report, a lady in a diner mentioned that people from the movie had been in the diner quite a bit, but it seems that nobody famous has been spotted. It may just be that Casey, April, and the turtles just haven't been filmed at all. Or maybe that set was just super locked-down. Either way, something's gotta give when they film in the city. I'm dying to see a suit, prosthetics, whatever...

Most likely, but it depends on the design. If these turtles are actor-size, there could be some real costume pieces. Like how portions of Iron Man's suit are real in some situations, while the rest is CG. For instance, these actors could be wearing real shells.

But that movie, the Nick TMNT series, and the IDW comic, are things I anticipated and enjoy without my friends and acquaintances. This is pretty much the only place I have in which to discuss those things, because no one I know cares.
This movie will likely be the first TMNT project since the 90's that will have a wide audience. I'll be able to talk about it with friends, co-workers, and any number of real live adults. Shared experience. That's cool.
