View Full Version : Splinter Has Been Cast

Well, he's not Japanese or any other Asian nationality. He's also very short. I don't know what to think. Clearly motion-capture.

EXCLUSIVE: Platinum Dunes has already found its Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Now the Michael Bay-produced Ninja Turtles reboot has cast the sage mentor to the heroes in a half-shell. Seinfeld alum Danny Woodburn will play Master Splinter in the live action/CG hybrid directed by Jonathan Liebesman. Paramount will release the pic June 6, 2014. Woodburn’s recent credits include Mirror, Mirror and recurring roles on Fox’s Bones and Disney XD’s recently renewed Crash & Bernstein. He is repped by Global Artists Agency.

Well, that's the thing. Is he a wise sensei from Japan? In this version, I really don't think so.

Legit? Another guy I don't know, but I've seen him in commercials.

It comes courtesy of Deadline Hollywood. Its 100% legit.

Whatever design they've come up for Splinter, he's obviously very small. In the other movies he was always smaller, so I guess I'm not that bothered by that. I must admit, I'm actually dying to see the designs of the characters. It won't make or break the movie for me, but it will definitely go a long way.

Slade

Yeah I'm ready to see designs. Like I said this is another guy I don't know, but I know it's not going to look like him so I'm whatever about all this.

And it just gets worse and worse. They might as well not even be making a TMNT movie, just treat it as some random alien movie.

I agree. I wonder how his movements will translate into motion capture....for instance, as a little person, he has the notable side to side action when he walks. Is that something they want Splinter to look like when he walks, or will they somehow be able to change that up in post? If not, I'll have a hard time not thinking Splinter is E.T. haha

My guess they will incorporate the actor's natural walk into the animation of the character. Hope that makes sense. So Splinter's design will work with this actor's distinctive walk. Or something like that.

But yeah, I'm dying to see designs. Bet you anything they get two wrestlers to play Bebop and Rocksteady. It wouldn't surprise me.

....after all the hype and excitement of a tall Splinter in the cartoon, they're going this direction?

I... really don't know what to think. :ohwell: I mean, he's a good actor. But.. Most of the work I've seen him do is comedy, the occasional police drama... between him and Will Arnett, is this going to be a campy 80s style Turtles movie?

I for one can't wait for the new movie. I will be there for the opening day for sure. Finally a dark gritty tmnt film with a hot April, good young talent for the turtles and Woodburn is perfect for splinters mo cap. Watch and see. This movie is going to surprise all the whiny doubters.

Why would you be pissed? Cause his voice isnt asian? Who's to say he's even voicing splinter. Has shredder even been confirmed for this movie? I personally think Krang is going to be the main villain not Shredder. People need to suck it up and realize this is a REBOOT. I don't care if there's not one asian person in it. I'm happy with the casting so far. Can't wait for this movie.

Peter Renaday(1980 cartoon) , Kevin Clash (1st & 2nd movies), James Murray (3rd movie), Mark Enis (Coming Out of Their Shells), Jack William Scott (Christmas Special/Turtle Tunes), Stephen Mendel (Next Mutation), Darren Dunstan (2003 series) , Terrence Scammel (2007 game) , David Wills (Turtles Forever 88) all played Splinter and none of them were Japanese.

So as long as he could do a wise elderly Japanese sensei he'll be alright.

I think Michael Bay just went, "Ok, I ruined Transformers pretty good, what can I do to ruin TMNT even more so?"

I really wonder why they think they can change the characters this much and think it'll be accepted by TMNT fans.

Kids watching the Nick cartoon will find the movie unrecognizable, and longtime fans like us are already disgusted.

So who the hell is this movie aimed at? Some casual 22 year old who never watched TMNT before?

I dunno... The kids might be the ones who care the least. I was born in '87, and I took in the OT and the movie trilogy at the same time. They were worlds different, and I wasn't turned off of either one.

Although, I always preferred the movies...

Jesus. He's a good actor but has no part as Splinter. While I've been okay with some of the casting choices of this movie I can say there hasn't been one part that has me excited for this movie.

Summer 2014 has me more excited for Capt America 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Spider-Man 2 and Pixars The Good Dinosaur. Never thought I'd see the day that a TMNT movie was this far down my list of must see Summer movies.

I had a feeling that his stature played into his casting. It lends weight to the argument that the turtles will be tall if their actor counterparts are too.

I think Will Arnett is playing Colonel Schrader.

Well, what was Transformers aimed at? Certainly not Transformers fans, the actual Autobots and Decepticons were in it what? 25 percent of the movie?

That's how I fear this'll be, April and Casey'll be the stars and the Turtles will barely be in it.

Idiot that he is, Michael Bay doesn't think people can relate to giant robots or mutant turtles, so he thinks people would rather have humans in the lead. Humans that actually play a much smaller part in the actual series'.

I understand where you're coming from. At first, with a leaked script and some of the actors, I figured this was going to be a half baked, poorly executed cash in with the Turtles' name. But now it is quite obvious they are going for something that we have never seen before, or even dared to dream of. They seem to be throwing us curve balls with every new detail they release.

A month ago I had basically no interest in this film, I was not going to see it in theaters. Im still not sure if I will, but I can definitely say that these latest developments have sparked my interest, if for no other reason than to see just where theyre going with it.

The problem is they don't even seem to want to make a TMNT film. They're taking the bare minimum of aspects and changing it into something totally different.

I know I've said this before, but after so many successful reboots with 4kids, Nick and IDW, three different reboots that changed things yet kept things familiar...its disturbing how this just looks awful in every capacity.

Exactly.

The Bay Camp cares nothing for the source material (or serious fans for that matter) save for the names of the characters in an attempt to ensnare moviegoers or to spark nostalgia in a past fan to lay down that 8-16$ And they don't even do that right!

Like I said this movie is going to end up burning bridges in terms of garnering new fans and spurning older fans with a garbage movie painted turtles green. Metallica once said "Sad but true..."

Odd choice, but why not. He's a good actor, of what I can remember of him.

If Danny reflects Splinter's height, I wonder if the Turtle actors will keep theirs or will be scaled down. I think a short Splinter works when the turtles also are on the short side, around 5 feet.

what a shame...I was wildly unimpressed with Miss Fox being cast as April, but whatever I could deal with that, however after reading the script and now seeing a midget is Splinter? F you Michael Bay and your stupid ass movie that can't even include the words "Teenage Mutant" because they are now aliens. This could have been so cool too, I can't imagine what the turtles are going to look like, I'd bet awful. :tmad:

A C list Comedian who does direct to DVD Christmas movies as Splinter yeesh that sounds like an iffy choice. He's a pretty good actor he might pull it off but the bulk of his work doesn't inspire any confidence playing an ancient wise ninja master Rat. I swear the casting for the movie has been beyond random like someone has a board with alot of names on it and there just blindly throwing darts at it.

Tell the truth casting is now moot anyway if its true the leaked script is the movie we are getting and the rewrites are to make it a cheaper and faster movie to make. Then no matter of casting is going to save it.

Sure, Danny Woodburn isn't asian, but neither was Kevin Clash!
Speaking of Clash, I'm sure people started complaining when they heard that Elmo was cast as Splinter in 1990. Turned out he was perfect!

And remember when Keaton was cast as Batman? People started petitions...

Well he's saving my childhood.

Are you for real? Look, I don't think the sky is falling, but nowhere -- from the early draft of the screenplay to the casting to the guy they got to direct this film -- do I see how this can be a good film, much less the triumphant savior of our childhood. Yes, it's naive to assume that a film will suck donkey balls long before it's even gone before cameras, but I'd easily say the same for the complete opposite, especially regarding the news for this film, which has typically drifted from lackluster to "m'eh."

At the end of the day, it will either be good, bad, or simply "so-so." If it sucks, then oh well, I just lost $10. That's it. It's not the end of the world, as some fans might make it seem. But, nothing about any of the news regarding this film has inspired any bit of confidence. It's pretty sad that the only news about this film that doesn't immediately spark anything less than a slight hesitation has been the casting of the "psychic powers guy" from Accepted and an SNL alum.

Next you'll tell us that Rob Scneider is a comedic genius, Honey Boo Boo is a national treasure, and GI Joe: Retaliation deserves the Oscar for Best Movie Ever.

That doesn't mean anything, they could simply not know Shredder is being changed to a different character.

Just like everyone assumes Casey Jones is in this movie based on that old script. For all we know there may not be a Casey.

All signs point to a similar type of script, the casting alone implies this.

Why cast Megan Fox as April if April was going to be a minor support character? Instead it looks like Casey and April will be the main characters with the Turtles on the side, and Shredder and everyone will be changed to aliens.

If you feel the first TMNT movie was good then surely you'd want a similar movie transposed to modern movie sensibilities, yes?

That aint what you are getting with the Michael Bay movie. It doesn't take a part time genius to work that out. It is arrogant to assume that the average opinion that this movie will suck based on the information we have is not how people really feel. Trust me I say what I feel and it just seems this movie seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

I just don't understand why Nick/Viacom would greenlit such a thing. Don't they have to approve the script before it goes into production?

Why would they even allow this?

Does anyone else think Eastman may just be the slightest bit sick of rehashing the same friggin story a bazillion times?? This movie is a reboot, not a remake, and is clearly going in a completely different direction and that takes balls. I say kudos to these guys for not taking the easy way out and just updating the original film for the 21st century, Kudos I say! Now that being said, this movie could still be one magnificently huge stinker, but I think it deserves the chance to be presented with an open mind from its source fanbase.

If you wanna see a slightly tweeked version of the original film, go pop in your vhs and turn your tv upside down.

All signs point to a similar type of script, the casting alone implies this.

Why cast Megan Fox as April if April was going to be a minor support character? Instead it looks like Casey and April will be the main characters with the Turtles on the side, and Shredder and everyone will be changed to aliens.

Speculation....so I would suggest your posts speculate that it will suck, rather than coming across like your assumptions are proven valid/true.

It's a Michael Bay film. Target demographic: 16 - 20 year-olds. Goal: To put butts in seats. Ratings? Irrelevant. More talk and fan ferver will just bring in more viewers, anyway.

You don't give someone like this source material for a film that you want to be respected.

Miracles could happen, but at this point, expecting or even hoping for one just seems cruel.

I never said it counts for "nothing" but it certainly doesn't equate to what is ACTUALLY being done with the film now. How many people working on the film need to come out and say that the fears everyone is posting online are not valid/true? I'd say that, at the very least, they cancel each other out. The ONE thing we all do know, is that none of us has any idea what is really going on with the filming of this movie.

I could say to you and the other people who are dead set on this movie being a pile of crap, that until we get actual straight up proof, you should stop acting like an old script counts for everything.

"NO IDEA" sounded like nothing. "The ONE thing we all do know," is EXACTLY what the plan for the film was, at a certain point in time.

The assumption, the leap of faith, is to think that things will differ from that. Because THAT is what we don't have evidence to support.

Bay was giving words of encouragement, telling us our fears were unfounded BEFORE the script leaked. So why be encouraged now? He still hasn't denied any of the script's features. Do you know how easy it would be for him to say that the turtles aren't aliens? He makes such statements on his forums all of the time.

Exactly - what the plan WAS at a certain point in time. We can go back and forth forever, but we still don't know what the updated, or possibly even <OMG> new script might be.

Have you seen the updated script? I'm assuming no. Therefore, I ask why exactly are you assuming they are making the film based on the "original" script?

Megan Fox = April
4 nobodies = the turtles
Will Arnett = Nobody knows
Danny Woodburn = Splinter
Some filming took place in a closed ski resort?

Is that really proof of anything? Seriously asking here...

It is not reasonable to act like these things are a complete toss-up when we know they were planned. Those elements are more likely than not.

As for the list, a snowy hill was involved in the leaked script. It's a pretty distinct location to be involved in a TMNT story, so it would be hard to chalk up to coincidence.

The way I look at it is that the leaked script was definitely the real deal. Anyone who followed the production of the Transformers films will know that Michael Bay is a very big liar. The one thing I will say, though, is that that script was clearly an early draft. Who knows why Paramount shut the film down the first time? One things for sure, though: work was definitely done on the script in that time.

We have to be realistic, though. Meaning, the Turtles (and Splinter) are still going to be aliens and Colonel Schrader, unfortunately, is probably still in. Still, work has been done on it since.

TBH, I’ve already kind of accepted this new film as a Bizzaro/Elseworlds version of TMNT. It could still be fun. I have a feeling that's all it could be, though. My biggest problem with this film is the actual director. I must admit, I like his visual pallet. I haven’t seen Wrath of the Titans yet, but it looks lovely. That’s the only thing I like about him. The cinematography in his films is top notch. So it will look like no other TMNT film yet.

Basically, I’m just looking at this film from a purely visual standpoint. That’s the only reason why I’m anticipating it, TBH. One of the things I’m most excited to see is the designs of the characters, the Turtles, Splinter, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady. I have no doubt they will all look exceptional, as I am a big fan of the performance-capture technology. I think apart from Avatar and the new Planet of the Apes, Ninja Turtles is the only film to utilise it to such a degree.

So yeah, I’m only really looking at this film from a technical and visual angle. Hopefully, a fun angle, too, once I see more of it.

at least midgets fighting each other might be slightly entertaining..

First of all... that's a pretty damn offensive thing to say.

Second of all, Rat King has never been that small. Splinter has ALWAYS been small, but I guess his hugeness in the Nick toon is making everyone suddenly forget that?

Alright, let's recap. So far this movie has:
-An explosion-craving, dumbed down action movie producer in charge of the production.
-A Mediocre director at the helm.
-And a cast of untalented OR unknown actors
Anything i'm missing?
Yeah, were not in the best of hands.

So, just because they're unknown automatically means they'll be bad actors? Did you know any of the actors in the first TMNT films, and were they untalented? No. I think everyone here needs to calm down and just see how things go, personally I'm giving the movie a chance. I'm not going to judge until I see the designs, some footage or even the trailer.

One thing I've been wondering about since Danny was cast, is Splinters potential new design. This will by far be the shortest Splinter in any version yet, and that's got me thinking... What if they're going for the super realistic approach this time? What if they went in that direction because they actually want Splinter to look more rat than mutant rat? Could be interesting. The only issue with that is that such a character would likely have a hard time teaching ninjutsu and the like, though I guess that remains to be seen.

My guess is Splinter will mostly be straight up animation. They can't just be using this guy's movements alone. For example, I can't remember exactly what happens, but I seem to recall Splinter having a pretty epic showdown with Bebop and Rocksteady in the sewer lair in the leaked script. So, he's in on the action.

Powder

Right. So that scene alone will pretty much be straight up animation. No motion-capture. There’s going to be a hell of a lot of animation in this film. Will pretty much be an animated/live-action film. A bit like Avatar.

Watch... Ninja Turtles get the Academy Award for best picture of 2014...

I'm going to be quite honest with everyone, I expected a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. If Hollywood is on the bandwagon with remakes and reboots, despite the new series being a hit, a new Turtles film wouldn't be very far behind. However, if it was done properly I wouldn't have mind.

So far, the casting blows. The fact that Megan Fox and Michael Bay is attached to the project blows, the fact that their aliens (whenever I tell this to non Turtle fans they even think it's a stupid idea) is retarted, and the fact that the co-creator doesn't support it is just plane sad. Personally this sounds like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle equivalent to Batman and Robin.

I don't care how dark this film is going to be or how many nods is going to play to the comic book and T.V. series I refuse to see it.

I rather watch Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader (and yes there is an actual film) over and over again that watch this piece of crap.

You can give this movie all the chances you want but that won't change how people feel about it. Not all of us are happy with the casting. How can you compare Judith Hoag to Megan Fox ? Yes Judith Hoag is attractive but at least they didn't pick someone (at the time) for T & A. At least she looked like April from the 1984 comics. If that was the case, then why didn't they pick Renee Tenison ? There's a difference between picking the appropriate actors to play parts and picking actors out of your ass.

Har! Green Lantern is a perfect example! Like I've said before the movie AT THIS VERY MOMENT IN TIME seems like its going to be some "What if the Turtles..." kind of spin off from the minds of seemingly inept writers.

Why can't we have someone write a original story made for movie using the turtles in a tried and true formula that we saw in the '90 Live action movie. I'm not talking about recycling the shredder as a villain, but merely finding a way to make a great and original film that we can all find something we can connect to and be proud of.

Like the damage the Bayformers movies did? Ya, Transformers is REALLY suffering from that, isn't it?

You can't compare a giant like TMNT to Green Lantern. I like Green Lantern, really I do... but Green Lantern doesn't compare to TMNT in popularity. TMNT, much like, say, Superman or Batman, can survive a bad movie (and we still don't know if it is a bad movie until it actually comes out), but Green Lantern can't. There's a world of difference.

If anything, I feel that the only thing that's ever "damaged" (your mileage may vary on whether this term truly applies or not) TMNT's reputation is the 1987 cartoon, since that's what's become the de facto "real version" of the TMNT in most everyone's minds. And trust me, this movie is NOT going to change that.

That being said, the Green Lantern's movie has nothing to do with the CGI toon's cancellation. Unless you want to say that it was responsible for the simultaneous cancellation of Young Justice, which has quite a big fan following? No, both of these cancellations are just Cartoon Network being its usual idiotic self and cancelling great shows long before they should be, while freakin' Johnny Test is entering its ninth season and shows no signs of going anywhere, anytime soon.

Young Justice and Green Lantern were cancelled because the shows cost too much to make and brought absolutely nothing back. YJ had a bit of an adult following but that amounts to a hill of beans when the toyline crashes and burns while the show fails to capture a larger audience.

Johnny Test is made in flash. So it costs roughly 2 dollars to produce.

I don't think many people care about Splinters height although there is precedence for a tall Splinter beyond the Nickshow such as TMNT Adventures and Rick Veitch's "The River". Both very popular amongst fans. On the whole I think fans prefer him short.

Fact is I like Danny Woodburn. I liked him on Seinfeld as well as playing Big Figure in Watchmen and even in fluff like Jingle All The Way but his voice doesn't really sound like Splinter and I've never got the impression Woodburn is a master of changing his voice. Maybe he's been hiding his credentials all this time but I can't help but think he'll either be an ill fit or they'll alter the Splinter character so he can he can sound like the actor.

As for the idea that there's plenty of examples of fans grousing about how someone is miscast only to turn out fine there's also plenty of examples of this being dead on. When Tim Burton cast Michael Keaton as Batman he released footage to reassure fans that the movie was on the "right" track. There has been nothing that anyone involved in this movie has done to reassure us our worries are in vain. Just pure deflection.

Also its not a bad thing to take available information about what we know about the movie and the people making it and reach a reasonable conclusion. If we're wrong then that's great but the whole "lets wait and see attitude" bugs me. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers have huge marquee value but after their movies no one trusts them to support another.

What does Kevin Eastman have to do with anything. It's not like he's making it. One might ask whether Stan Lee is sick of rehashing the same stories for all his characters.

Also casting Megan Fox and making the characters aliens doesn't sound like they are taking the difficult route in this picture.

Do you think the actor will be performing with a Japanese accent? I quite like the 2007 movie and Nick toon voice acting for Splinter, but they both are of asian descent (Korean, I think, for the latter). But I did like Kevin Clash and that dude is Elmo.

Maybe I'll see how this movie turns out with this Splinter. And who knows. I might or might not like it. :toops:

Not really. I feel like theyre not leaning towards much of any Japanese influence for this film. I am excited to see what they do with it tho. Btw, the original movie splinter is how i usually imagine splinter to talk, just my preference.

hey guys according the site www.superherohype.com

"Paramount Pictures launched CinemaCon's opening night festivities with a montage preview of their upcoming slate and two extended looks at the forthcoming Star Trek Into Darkness and World War Z. Some projects in the montage, like Transformers 4, Interstellar and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" offered only logos, although the appearance of the latter seems to fully confirm that the title will include both "teenage" and "mutant".

so that's mean that they kept the main title but there is no picture of the movie logo.

I had talked to a few people working on the film and all of them were referring to it as TMNT. This confirms it then. Good.

Um, is that guy really the best choice for an old wise sensei from Japan?

That was my first reaction as well. Like a lot of others here I do like him on Seinfeld but he certainly wasn't my first pick to play Splinter. For me the biggest question will be his voice. I can't picture him voicing Splinter right now. I guess we'll see how he does next year.

If Splinter is a mutated Rat in the new movie, does he really need to have a Japaneses or Asian accent?

Sure the rat was born in Japan, but he mutated and developed the ability for human speech in New York. As much as I like Mako's voice acting for the last movie, Splinter don't necessarily need an Asian accent if he is a mutated rat and not Hamato Yoshi mutated to a rat.

ooookaaaayyyyy. my initial feeling is that its kind of an odd choice. other than his size, i dont believe much else works for the character. as others have noted, his movements are more of a waddle and his voice i dont see as a fit either. all that said, i'm not a producer or special fx guy, so i'll wait to see what kind of magic they work with the character.

My hope is that he'll walk with a cane which may explain the walk. I like the idea of a tiny Splinter, it's very much in line with most iterations of the character. But yeah, I agree with the general consensus that the casting is a head scratcher, although for me it's almost entirely due to the voice.

The actor's natural voice doesn't mean anything. Nor the voices of other characters he's played. He's an actor. He can change it.

Take an actor like Alan Cumming. Played two blue-skinned characters- Nightcrawler (X-Men 2) and Gutsy (The Smurfs).
COMPLETELY different voices. Noone could tell it was the same actor.

The voice is the very least of my concerns.
Megan Fox isn't.
