hey guys, haven't seen this discussed anywhere on the drome yet, so I thought Id share it with you....I hope this will be released in the us and uk and elsewhere on the globe, too...as of yet I have NO information on this product other than posted...but its surely nice to see the eps going on blu ray...amazon has listed 3 releases so far going till ep
blu ray release 1 (release date:13 jan 2014) contains eps 1-56
http://www.amazon.de/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Edition/dp/B00EHFMROG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382365198&sr=8-2&keywords=turtles+blu+ray
blu ray release 2 (release date:10 feb 2014) contains eps 57-113
http://www.amazon.de/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Edition/dp/B00EV21XO0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1382365323&sr=8-3&keywords=turtles+blu+ray
blu ray release 3 (release date:17 march 2014) contains eps 114-169
http://www.amazon.de/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Edition/dp/B00EV21XN6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1382365387&sr=8-4&keywords=turtles+blu+ray
I cant find any word on specials or anything else unfortunatelly....it may be noted that cover art work is just a place holder(these were the covers to the wonderful ksm dvd box set releases)....I also know that the turtles show has had 194 episodes in total but there is no word on any further release at the moment from what I can see...
hope you like it.me?I have bought the ksm releases on dvd and dont know if I would buy this.if it contains any real specials this time I would I think.the prices are quite nice...

Should have figured Lions Gate would find a way to suck of last bit profit out of the OT series
I should have guessed Blue-Ray would be next, but it will be a nice option for others

Well, if the US price is also $32 a piece, $98 is much cheaper than the Party Wagon set that now goes for over $400. Plus it's Blu-Ray.

Dang! And I just completed the DVD collection! Now I gotta re-buy all over again and then I'll have 3 copies of the series LOL! Granted, I'll never actually open the Party Wagon set. I see an eBay poting in the future for my individual DVD releases. It'll be nice to have on Blu-Ray (assuming US gets it) but I would rather see the 2K3 series or even the Nick series get this. I doubt they are going to digitally restore, so what we will get will be the DVD releases slapped on a Blu Ray and upscaled to 1080P. Only those with larger screens will notice any difference in playback quality.

I believe the entirety of '87 and the majority of 2k3 sans Turtles Forever were produced in standard definition. A hi-def release seems kind of pointless unless digitally remastered.

Sadly, yes. If you want to try to get the Party Wagon set now, they are going for about that... I think I saw one for ONLY $350, but it's still highway robbery. Such a shame, I really want one!

Well if the series wouldn't be complete, at least it stops at the most logical point (the last episode before Red Sky). That said, its a nice space saver compared to the DVDs, and extras could always be filmed via Blu-Ray shall Lionsgate ever have a chance to interview the people behind the OT (Susan Blu would be appropriate lol) shall it get a North American release. If there's no Region 1 release, I'll pursue these Blu-Rays!

That honestly depends on what sort of source is being used. If they just have some standard definition digital masters or tapes, then this would be an upscale at best. However, if the source footage they have is actual 16mm film (like FUNimation's masters of Dragon Ball Z), then it actually can be scanned in actual 1080p HD for a Blu-ray release.
Would it benefit from being in HD without some sort of remastering, though? :tconfuse:

Like with most foreign releases, I'm going to pretend this doesn't exist unless it comes out in the U.S. Anything that doesn't get released in the U.S. always feels bootleg to me, I don't know why.
I doubt I'd buy a US one anyway, they're not remastering anything.
I'd buy it just to have the whole series in 3 discs. With a new movie I can see Lionsgate wanting to release them again and maybe in BR would be a good way to do it. So, I actually forgot what was missing from the DVDs, we did get all episodes eventually right? Or was there a missing episode never released? I forgot.
I think with this release they'd finally be able to get all the episodes out without a problem...If we could ask for some OT accurate art it'd be amazing, was it a legal thing? because the first set did have OT accurate art. My only other wishlist would be to have the turtle tips but I think that's pretty much a not going to happen unless a company like Shout! Factory got the rights.

I would love to see that show up on Blu Ray. I've been wanting to go through that series but the DVD releases are all over the place, and I believe many of those volumes are going for quite a bit, particularly for volume releases with only a few episodes.

well thats your oppinion and your policy..but let me remind you again of the nice ksm dvd box sets that came out over here first and for the first time EVER collected real amounts of episodes from the ot (not fifteen hundered single disk releases as before) uncut and in good quality...these were german, thusly 'foreign', releases...so lets wait and see....

True, but judging from the DVD releases, the original films are either lost, inaccessible, or they didn't want to go through the trouble using them. I know a few episodes were merely VHS rips on the DVDs.
Time to do the math.
50 episodes ( rounding down for ease of numbers) on 50Gb equals 10 eps per 10 Gb.
8Gb of DVD has about 8 episodes on each disc.
Ergo both sets are using aprox 1Gb per episode.
I think this is the same SD set but carried over 4 discs instead of 20.

I would buy it on Blu ray if it was released in the U.S. and if there truly was a visual improvement on the digital quality here.
...Yet even after all of that I probably won't, because I know they are going to slowly leak out extras (interviews, how to draw OT Turtles, maybe some copies of some unused scripts, or the vocals from the "Shredder In Love" unfinished episode, etc.) with each release. Pssh, I'll probably be waiting for another 2 years until I feel satisfied enough to buy anything.

But it's probably an SD upscale.

Wait a second... I know this is off-tangent but on those Amazon website Blu-Ray cover pictures, is the green circle on the bottom left corner the German rating system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_picture_rating_system#Germany)?
I'm just surprised that they consider the OT episodes so "mature" (Freigegeben ab 12 Jahren (FSK 12): children 12 or older admitted, children between 6 and 11 only when accompanied by parent or a legal guardian (green sign)), that it has the SAME rating as Gravity (http://www.amazon.de/Gravity-3D-Blu-ray/dp/B00FG090PK/ref=pd_sim_d_6) (PG-13), 2 Guns (http://www.amazon.de/2-Guns-Blu-ray/dp/B00FF4KQUA/ref=pd_sim_d_5) (R), and Jurassic Park (http://www.amazon.de/Jurassic-Park-Blu-ray-3D/dp/B00EEW5C4Y/ref=pd_sim_d_27) (PG-13).
...Say what?
You see American TMNT fans, the OT is still apparently considered "too violent" in parts of Europe! So don't criticize the show for being so "slapstick", it was forced to tone it down for international appeal.

Could be... **shrug**
I guess I find it hilarious that according to this German rating system, if I have a 7 or 8 year old child who watches the OT with me and doesn't find it disturbing, then theoretically, my 7 or 8 year old kid is "mature enough" to handle Jurassic Park, 2 Guns, Gravity, Hotel Rwanda (2004) (http://www.amazon.de/Hotel-Ruanda-Don-Cheadle/dp/B000BSNHDI/ref=sr_1_3?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1382528648&sr=1-3) (PG-13 rating in U.S.), Crash (2004) (http://www.amazon.de/L-Crash-Sandra-Bullock/dp/B000CDQS6A/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1382527803&sr=1-1&keywords=crash) (R rating), and Argo (http://www.amazon.de/Argo-Extended-Blu-ray-Ben-Affleck/dp/B00A696AKE/ref=pd_cp_d_3) (R rating) with me as well.
...They should lower it to FSK 6, but whatever.

Now if people say OT is too childish I'll just shove this "mature" rating down their throat.

Sorry for being the party pooper, guys, but do any of you know that KSM also released original He-Man and the MOTU on Blu-Ray? Are you aware that this releases is THE s***? No? Read here (http://www.he-man.org/forums/boards/showthread.php?228367-Filmation-He-Man-and-the-Masters-of-the-Universe-coming-to-Blu-Ray-in-Germany) and here (http://www.amazon.de/He-Man-Masters-Universe-Season-Blu-ray/dp/B008N8OZUM/) (use Google translate to have a basic idea of what is said in the product comments)!
And let's not forget that German versions of the OT was made from censored British version (no chucks or "ninja" words). KSM DVDs included both censored and uncensored versions, but I'm pretty sure that Blu-rays will get only those with German audio.

One disc for 56 episodes? That can't be right. Or the quality must be at or sub-DVD level.
Also, re: the standard definition comment last page, the Fred Wolf cartoon used actual film. With access to masters in high-enough quality, a true high definition version that looks significantly better than its standard-definition counterpart could be produced. And, while not as noticeable as with live action due to a lower level of detail, high-definition film animation still does look noticeably better.
This, as opposed to say the 4Kids series or Turtles Forever, which, as far as I know, were filmed digitally in standard definition; they'll never be able to look better than the best standard-definition encode they could get.

...You must not know just how big a gigabyte is... To put it in perspective: One episode of Pokemon (an SD season made around the same time as the OT) that I copied to my computer is about 150 megabytes. There are about 1000 megabytes in a gigabyte. EDIT: That still doesn't mean that they used up all the space, or even dual-layer Blu-Rays.

Verrrryyyyy curious as to whether or not these will be new scans of the existing cells or film in HD, or if the Blu Ray discs are just being used as a mass storage medium to pack that many episodes into fewer discs.

The episodes of Pokemon on my computer look as good as the DVDs. I'm not even sure that they're compressed, unless my computer program did it automatically.
How did you acquire these Pokemon episodes? From YouTube? If so, they're compressed. Did you rip them from your DVDs at a bitrate you chose? If so, they're compressed. Did you just download them from some site? If so, they're probably compressed.
You may not be able to tell the visual difference between a copy on your computer and a DVD, but it's there.
Here's an example. Take a look at this (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/TheSkeletonMan939/Images/vlcsnap-2013-11-30-21h47m27s83.png) image of the Young Justice episode "Endgame". It's 1080p, from iTunes.
Look pretty good, right? It's HD, so why wouldn't it?
Let's look at a shot from a few minutes later, at a high-speed chase with lots of background action. Right here (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/TheSkeletonMan939/Images/vlcsnap-2013-11-30-21h47m38s212.png).
Ew. That's kind of yucky. Look at how pixelated it is. Is the rest of the episode like that? Nope, as we can see a few seconds later, everything else looks fine (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/TheSkeletonMan939/Images/vlcsnap-2013-11-30-21h48m03s225.png).
Now let's go back to the Flash (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/TheSkeletonMan939/Images/vlcsnap-2013-11-30-21h48m31s220.png).
My God, that looks terrible. Remember, this is a 1080p HD copy of the episode from iTunes. What could cause this? Compression. According to Mediainfo this has a general bitrate of 5398. That disgusting compression in the Flash sequences is in every second of the episode, but there's not enough going on in most sequences for the bits to be spread so thin. I'm no huge expert on this, but I think that's logical, no?
So the big question is whether the company will take advantage of the Blu-Ray's space by providing better-looking, cleaner copies of the OT episodes, or whether they'll cram in as many episodes as humanly possibly onto the discs at the same okay-looking quality the DVDs have.

Nope...never heard that! If so, great! How about the language? Is it German only?
UPDATE: It looks like the audio is definitely GERMAN ONLY according to the ksmfilm.de website:
Original title: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Country: USA
Year: 1987
Release Date: 20/01/2014
Picture format: 4:3, 1.33:1
Audio format: German (Dolby Digital 2.0)
Subtitles: Unspecified
Genre: Animation
Running time: about 1232 min.
Maybe the pic quality will be decent (??), but the GERMAN ONLY audio is a definite deal-breaker for me.

How many people here would buy this even though the language is german-only?? I would import them in a second if they had an english track, but there's no way I could watch them in german. It's odd to not have the native language. Not all, but MOST releases of a movie or show released in countries other than it's native country will contain the native track even if it's not set as the primary track.

Ditto. I got my german alf dvds 'cuz they're unedited AND comes with the original english track as an option. It would be pointless to buy dvds you don't understand.
The KSM DVD release of the OT had TWO files for each episode: 1 file was the edited German version, the other was the regular English version. I'm guessing the bluray will be the same.
The superior quality of the KSM DVD releases to the Lion's Gate US version has been well documented: http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?p=979902#post979902
The only downside to the DVD's was very very minor compression. If the only difference between the bluray and DVD is removal of the compression artifacts, then the bluray will be a sure winner.
Looking at the Amazon listing for the KSM DVD's: http://www.amazon.de/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Episoden/dp/B005EJIIQU/ref=pd_cp_d_0/275-5605129-9010128
They show both English and German for the audio. So unfortunately, unless it's a typo, it looks like the BluRay Amazon listing is German only.

thats all true what you guys have said in those last comments..and so far I think it isn't really known what audio tracks will be on it in the end.I can only say I probably will check them out and report to you what the deal is with them.(I am living in germany...)
to alf and turtles I can only say even if you cannot understand the language with THESE particular two shows its worthwhile to check them out at least once, the synch is absolutely superb and mucho fun;)...I even like their german voices much better than their original voices(which is odd for me, I usually am overjoyed when I can see the english audio track of something american..).I always felt let down by the voice performance of fusco in alf, to my ears it sounds too monotonous and repetitive..in german alf is such a cool and rude individual it will make me laugh until I am no more;)

For god's sake, DVD companies, can't you release the 2k3 series on Blu-Ray?! It'd be much more worthwhile and much fewer people have the 2k3 series on DVD than the OT.

I sooooooo wish they would do that, or at leadt re-release the dvds in full seasons. I didnt see much of that show and would like to see in it's entirety.
Gorgeous!
Unfortunately in Italy was never released even a DVD, and I think that will never go out even the blu ray, incredible.

This thread hasn't been touched in a while, but I've recently learned that professional media distribution companies shouldn't be releasing things like this on Blu-ray unless they might be upgrading it to high definition and improving the audio. They are not to use Blu-rays for the purpose of mass storage. That goes against the Blu-ray licensing terms and companies could be prevented from creating future Blu-ray titles. So if even an overseas company gets away with such things, it's most likely because they have little to no respect for copyright or licensing law.

Or they have different views on copyright and licensing.
There's a reason why, example, the Japanese can use music or characters in their shows or anime but if it's to be imported here, the names and music must be altered or cut.
Different regions and countries have different views. Once that product is brought into another region or country, then it becomes a problem.
I dont know Europe's stance or rules on it.
