View Full Version : Why are the new movie designs good in peoples' eyes when Next Mutation's weren't?

I'm just curious since we've seen a lot of comparisons of the new movie designs to the Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation series.

I can see the similarities in the new turtles, but I recall Next Mutation didn't go beyond one season.

Did people hate the NM designs?
If so, was it because of Power Rangers, even though that show was on the decline as well?
Was Venus basically the big issue given how much she was pushed on the show?

To be fair, whilst the costumes for TNM weren't the best, for a 90s kids TV show budget they were pretty good.

Venus is very divisive. She's certainly not needed, but she alone didn't sink TNM, that was down to one thing - it was a bad show.

Personally, I don't even really dislike TNM designs themselves, it was the costumes that did it in for me. They just looked way too cheap. The new movie doesn't have that issue with all the money being poured into its digital effects.

I never had a problem with them, and people accept this new movie as a new turtleverse but they don't really do that with the next mutation. I don't get it. I'd take TNM designs over these any day of the week. Plus you gotta think if the original movies and TNM had this kind of budget their designs would be above and beyond.

I agree with previous posts, despite TV Budget the costumes were decent if not a little cheap and if it had a bigger budget it could be one of the best Turtle designs. I also think despite a few flaws, in figures the Turtles look pretty great but it's the poster that I dislike. Venus I dislike about the show among other things but the costumes wasn't what made me dislike the show.

In Space was one of the best seasons of Power Rangers to me and brought the Power Rangers out of decline despite it was suppose to be the last season.

Then, people were just coming off of the OT and Mirage vol. 2/Image vol. 3 comics. So lots of cool stuff. They could afford to be critical.

Now it's a matter of a bunch of entitled 20 somethings that want something 'for them' even though they're completely passing over the Nick series, assuming it's for kids. They like change for the sake of change, and pretentious 'badass' concepts, because it makes them feel like the property is growing up with them. Their nostalgia for the property in clouding their judgement. They're just happy to see turtles.

Granted there are many who genuinely like the designs, my guess is that the masses fall under the above description. I for the record like TNM's designs and I did like the scale models of this new film, just not the poster versions.

I remember liking the Next Mutation when it was on TV, and I haven't seen it in about 15 years, but the turtle designs now strike me as too 'designy'. I'm not a fan of their armour like plastrons in particular. Aside from that they're OK.

The Next Mutation designs are only superficially similar to the 2014 movie designs. They both have bandaged forelimbs, larger masks, and loads of unnecessary straps and things, but the overall feel is different.

Yeah, I liked the Next Mutation's designs for the most part. Those designs were different enough, but still very TMNT. As other have said, they are a little cheap, but it is a TV show.

Very true, but I'm pretty much the opposite; I'm following both the IDW comics and the Nick series but are planning to skip this movie; there's currently two awesome incarnations of the Turtles on the go at the moment, so I'm still getting my Turtles fix. As I have said before, this movie looks like Michael Bay's version of the Fred Wolf show (which I'm not a fan of, while I respect it for breaking the franchise through into the mainstream).

As for The Next Mutation, I watched it as a kid, but don't remember it so much now. I tried watching the first episode once, but I couldn't get through it

The NM deigns are miles above the new movie designs, but I still don't like them all that much. Their plastron is a bit to human muscle looking for my taste, especially when the second upper scutes resembles the way the rib cage shows on a human.

The Next Mutation designs were actually pretty good for a cheaply made kids show. Even the bandana changes were actually done well.

I agree that the next mutation suits looked much cheaper than the previous live action stuff, but those designs are much closer to what the turtles should look like than the 2014 movie designs. I would accept a more realistic design based on TNM over these horrid new costumes any day.

I'm 24, and I personally like the new designs (within reason). Yes, I will admit they are over done and VERY busy for no reason, but they still aren't awful. The way the turtles look in the OT and the comics will always be the turtles and how they should look in my eyes. TNM wasn't bad either. None of them looked like 'badasses', which is what a lot of people that like the new designs are saying they like about it unfortunately.

I don't think that change should happen for the sake of change either. Cause with the turtles, they have an iconic look that you can change but should do sparingly. I'll agree that the poster versions of the new designs were completely over the top and devoid of subtlety. The scale models on the other hand, looked great since they looked like the actual turtles that I grew up with, with MINIMAL change.

But its looking more and more like the poster designs are what we'll be seeing. One of two things will happen from this, 1) people (who like it AND dislike it now) will end up loving it and the movie and its sequels will do well. OR 2) the designs will completely ruin the movies and the movies will bomb from the lack of interest from die hard fans and new fans alike. And if the second happens (at this point, it seems the most likely), then the series has the chance to be picked up in the future and given the respect and competence that it deserves, at least I hope this is what happens.

On a side note, I wish they would have just went with the same type of turtles and turtle suits that they used for the original turtle movies. I'm pretty sure everyone, or damn near everyone, would be happy at that point.

Ya know, I'm not sure if I agree with this. There was a time where I felt that way, but now, maybe not. While I pretty much hate the new designs (in the poster, anyway), I'm kinda glad we're not getting a more classic look. This film is lining up to be a polished turd, with its white-washing, shallow leads, bastardized origins, etc. It's probably for the best that they not relieve their bowels on the legacy of the turtles by masking something so horrid with good turtle designs, you know? At least this presumably crappy take will be wholly theirs, and not a riff on something familiar.

They're not going for extreme. All that is being accentuated is accessories, clothes, and physiques that highlight the individualities between the brothers.

You pretty much described the reason they're being considered extreme by so many of us...

Jester
02-08-2014, 08:04 PM
Hell, that isn't even as extreme as the change from all red bandanas to colored ones. Or colored elbow pads, tape, and knee pads with their superhero initials on their belts.
There's a difference between modifying the designs to make them more "kid-friendly" and what PD has done. Giving them color-coded masks and pads and initialed belt buckles wasn't an attempt to paint on their character traits but an attempt to make them more individually recognizable for kids (and mainly their figure buying parents.)

Pointing out their personalities via costumes reeks of laziness and to be honest strips them of any sort of nuance. There really is more to Michelangelo than "the party dude." He's also a sensitive ar-tist. It's not hardcore or dark, it seems even more childish, because it takes the individual color codes and kicks them up to 11.

But I guess it's the logical progression:
Mirage - Identical, all red bandanas
FW - Color coding in bandanas.
Movies - Distinct faces.
NM - Individualized bandana styles
4Kids - Unique color coded skin
Nick - Different builds
PD - ALL THE CHANGES!!!!

I love how you added the "fighting tape" like THAT is why we're all against these designs.

All of the prior "costume changes" really did little to integrate the "character" into it, just made the individual Turtles just that much more visually distinct.

You might be able to make an argument that the Nick character design do in a way attempt to, but it's nowhere near as extreme as giving them all scavenged clothes that seem to point to specific traits, like Leo, the Honorable Warrior, Raph the Brute, Donnie the Techie, and Mikey the Surfer Dude.

Powder
02-08-2014, 08:24 PM
I don't think that is an extreme re-invention. They just throw on a bit extra clothes that define their personalities, or interests.

What on earth is so extreme about that? You'd have to be a hard pressed fan boy stuck on one vision of the character to be that upset.

Hell, that isn't even as extreme as the change from all red bandanas to colored ones. Or colored elbow pads, tape, and knee pads with their superhero initials on their belts.

Before these designs were released we saw countless FAN interpretations of the characters keeping their core essence visually intact but just adding on more plausible personality defining traits for the characters like specific style of dress, etc.

Then we actually get something like those fan made interpretations of the turtles, and the "hardcore fans" are on their rag, PMSing about it.

Go on SHH, a non biased board about any and all things comic book movie related. The majority of them like the designs. They're not "casuals" or "platinum dune plants" ... they're just not slaves to one rigid vision like many fan boy dorks can be.

The idea behind their apparel suggests that people should be able to identify your personality based on your style of dress, which is something I'd like to think society has been trying to change. Being smart doesn't mean you should be trying to look like a robotic Steve Urkel. Subscribing to Eastern beliefs shouldn't require weighing yourself down with armor, when as it is, you have a (very heavy) shell & leathery skin. Etc. There are enough differences between their faces, builds, heights, bandanas, and so on, to tell them apart. Going to greater lengths to convey that, is extreme, especially when the look stems from stereotypes. Changing a mask color, adding a belt buckle, some bandages, these are subtleties. Calling those extreme is absolutely absurd.

I am hardly against variations, I'm one of the guys who supports the idea of getting feral monstrous turtles, who are the farthest thing from the smooth bulbous caricatures we've come to know. Just because we saw countless fan interpretations doesn't mean they had widespread support by fans. & Just because fans enjoy a particular work of art, or concept, does not mean they would like to see it on the big screen, or that it would translate well. There are some fan pieces out there, that use apparel, among other things, to make the characters unique, that I imagine many of us would prefer to these. It's not what you do, but how you do it. The execution of these designs is what's flawed, not the idea of them (even if it is undesirable to some of us).

I find it insulting, that those of us who speak on this issue logically, are somehow mere fanboys, dorks, whose well-written disdain over the matter is being compared to bleeding female genitalia.

And we do not know Shredder IS a Weeaboo, People just keep assuming it because he is white. we don't know his back story this could be explained and this is exactly what i was talking about I'm not about to keep explaining it when you Obviously cant "get" it "into your skull"

Fichtner as shredder could be any number of thing Adopted by Japanese family, Love child Of and American and Japanese person, Reincarnated, or even Japanese Ala Cloud atlas. Do we really know he is a weeaboo? I mean, the armor doesn't strike me as very Japanese and the only really Japanese thing in the movie we know of is the possibility of the Seppuku. Seems like just a paramilitary Shredder/Foot.

Then again not sure which is worse...

And if he's Japanese like the characters in Cloud Atlas it'd make little sense, since the reason for the race bending in that was to keep the same actors in multiple related roles.

I don't dislike Bay, I just haven't heard or seen anything to make me excited about a new Turtle movie. Just the name TMNT on it isn't enough...quality is key.

I don't need the character designs to accentuate the characters...I need the writing and the acting to do that. I need the movie as a whole to do that. Using the designs to do it seems like a pointless short cut.

Jester

No, my assumption is not based on the writing being bad. I'm not assuming that the dialogue or action won't tell me about the characters, but why do the designs have to too?

If the writing is good, then great. That's what I want from a Turtle movie. What I DON'T want is character designs that spell out everything where the movie itself should do it.

The fact that the designs seem to be visual short hand for their personalities seem to tell me that PD assumes the story won't do that, though.

Does Batman need to wear ears, a winged like cape, and a chest symbol?

I mean total overkill. No subtlety. He should just be a vigilante who is scared of bats since childhood. The writing, and acting should tell me that alone. Not his design.

Nowhere near the same thing, man. Batman has always had the cowl, the cape and the Bat logo. That's his basic character design. That's like the base TMNT with the masks, knee and elbow pads and belts. I have a problem with the excessive changes to the existing designs, not the designs themselves.

If someone were to decide to take Batman and say made the cape real, functional, bat wings, and gave him a fat wallet and chain because after all Bruce Wayne is a millionare. Oh, and lets throw in a magnifying glass, pipe and one of those Sherlock Holmes hats, because he's a detective. OH OH...and give him samurai armor complete with a new more ninja inspired mask because he's also a trained ninja.

THEN it'd be on equal footing. What you did was strip away all of Batman's character design, not add character defining elements on top of it.

I just happen to be the type who stands up for myself.

I need to win the people over here? Is that how I transform from a "casual" whose opinion shouldn't be taken seriously here or so I've been told? You guys are like a nerd gang. I don't need to win anyone over.

For the most part, really generalizing here, a lot of you come off like elitist douche bags. Over Ninja Fukking Turtles, so I'm not making any efforts to win over anyone.

Win people over.

I need to win the people over when they're demeaning my opinion, or giving me labels so my voice shouldn't be taken seriously. Like I work for Michael Bay, or I don't know the Ninja Turtles well enough if I like the new look.

I'm sure the writing, the way the characters are portrayed by acting in the movie will be doing that too, no?

Why wouldn't these characters if they plausibly existed not dress themselves like how we KNOW them to be, in essence ... as characters? I would totally see pop culture loving Mikey finding an old pair of Jordan's in the trash, cutting out the toe box and wearing them.

I could totally see student of the japanese bushido ways putting together is own makeshift battle gear compromised of bamboo sticks, and wood. Closely resembling visually the ancient ninjas, and samurai who roamed Japan.

I could totally see hot head Raph, the one who loves to fight constantly doing his loner thing spending time weight lifting, doing pushups, bench pressing heavy things in his spare time to get super big to help him, ya know ... in fights !!!

Who'd have thunk it !!! How dumb would it be if the character designs didn't represent who they were in spirit? It's like that for people, why wouldn't it be like that for walking, talking, mutated teen turtles?

And who on earth said the designs alone are the things that are defining these characters? It just accentuates things. That's not bad by any means. Does Batman need to wear ears, a winged like cape, and a chest symbol?

I mean total overkill. No subtlety. He should just be a vigilante who is scared of bats since childhood. The writing, and acting should tell me that alone. Not his design.

If I took all the Movie Turtles and put them in a room with 2k3 Mikey he be ripping on them all day.

On a design note despite Raph wanting to bulk up to have more strength than his brothers, despite Donnie using science to solve many of his problems, despite Mikey wanting to fit in with society. They are still Ninja's and speed and stealth will still be at the forefront of their minds. Leo would have this stuff hanging in his room and fanboying over it but to actually wear it?

To put that Donnie was a techie in 2k3 many episodes he carries a duffle bag. To show Mikey was more pop culture he says and takes on many trends and qualities modern teenagers have. You could find him glued to an IPad and one of the others make a joke about how attached he is to it. Leo is often portrayed as being the most mature but when lumped with his brothers they bring out his inner immaturity, the comedic possibilities there are endless Raph is a loner a tough guy having a bit of a build is fine, I'm sure the guy lifts in his free time (wouldn't be surprise if they all did) he probably pick up bad habits young adults would have such as drinking and smoking. You could've just had his headband tattered and torn compared to the rest of the Turtles heck all his gear really. and that would've gotten across to alot of people that he likes to fight or a bit of a trouble maker.

The clothes uh... The glasses? One Donnie (in any version) hates playing to the nerd stereotype Two I doubt a guy who is practically nocturnal would wear sunglasses even to "look cool". As much as a attention ***** 2k3 Mikey was, I can't imagine him wearing clothes other than to be funny and would shed them in a fight saying their in the way.

The reasons I never liked NM...

Cheap looking costumes
Oversized ugly splinter
Over stylized individual character designs
Venus
Bad voice actors (over the top/unbelievable)
And the biggest reason for me... there was too much mysticism, cheesy sound fx/music, and in general felt like they tried too hard to mimic the power rangers to try and ride their coat tails.

While I don't care for the individually stylized clothing in this new film, I don't believe it will be anything like NM.

Which strangely enough never came to print, odd huh, such a strong costume indeed...

No, instead they took the Superman costume and ripped things from The Shadow and Zorro and made something that actually looked good.

And a heads up, that isn't Kane's original drawing design, it's a recreation drawn by Arlen Schumer. Also that isn't Bat-man or Batman, the domino mask, red spandex and wings guy was called "Bird-Man" something apparently thanks to Bill Finger was changed and they started to develop Batman.

How do you compare early concept art to decades of consistency and a near canon-like appearance? Nobody associates that drawing with Batman, not even you.

Well, the Bird- Man concept isn't exactly a good point to use. Shredder also had a different look in his first concept ands as at the time called "Grate Man" and the turtles was in concept to have a third heel-toe like Nightcrawler. It was never used as a griping toe, but the elongated toe stayed in the mirage comics for the most part. And the turtles had retractable claws, never came past concept.

Then use actual pictures of batman and not the never used bird-man concept.

Batman's design have stayed consistent since first publication, he's changed ear shape on the cowl, gloves and symbol. Sometimes the colors in the costume differs slightly. But still relatively unchanged since first appearance until now.

Why do we always have to bring the Nick series up. Come on, this is a movie thread...

As to Batman, Candy hit it on the head. Batman has changed over the years, much like the turtles up until to these designs, but those changes have been minor and mostly just cosmetic. These are ridiculous attempts to use visual short hand to tell us what the Turtles are like rather than showing us through actions and dialogue.

I never actually disliked the NM designs. I thought they were pretty decent for a cheap budgeted show back then. The story on the other hand is another thing.

Agreed.

The reason you guys are against the costume change is because it seems like the community here is fans of something from childhood, and they're literally too stuck or nostalgic for one particularly vision.

It's kind of sad, really. You can't even be excited for a new live action, well funded Ninja Turtles summer blockbuster. You're too consumed with irritable hate.

...Because it all just looks like ass, bro. Because it all just looks like ass.

Call it "Nostalgia", "Close-Minded", whatever you want, there was nothing *wrong* with the more familiar designs, and there wouldn't be as much wrong with a "fresh new take" if it didn't look like it was entirely put together by a group of little kids mix-and-matching their action figure accessories. And since these kinds of movies DO design their characters by focus-testing concept art for potential toys, it essentially WAS put together by a bunch of f*cking little kids, and that's exactly what it looks like!

At the end of the day, it's not "nostalgia" or "blind hate", it's that some people recognize Holy F*cking God-Awful design when they see it. Browse DeviantArt or whatever, going back years and years, you'll see a million "new takes" on TMNT that don't look half as sh*tty as this expensive, "professional" redesign. My f*cking wrestling promoter of all people would pull those Turtles aside and be like, "Woah... WAY too much gimmick, brother!"

And it just kills me - absolutely murders me - when people go on and on about "personality" and "individual expression" and "keeping it authentic"... Holy sh*t, don't be such a MARK. There's enthusiasm, and then there's simply saying "I want this movie to be good SO badly I'll swallow whatever they tell me to, and grasp at any straws I can find." The former is fine, the latter is transparent and annoying. Because NOTHING about those designs was done with that rationale in mind. They don't want to "express the Turtles' individuality through the way they dress," they want to "dumb down their personalities to the point of painful cliched stereotype, the better to stand out on a crowded shelf at Toys R Us". It's 100% the latter, absolutely 0% the former, and please, everyone needs to stop even pretending otherwise.

I don't hate the designs just because my tastes lean towards a more Classic look, although I freely admit that they do. I hate them because it's a completely awful look done for completely awful reasons. They're going to be on the shelf right next to the Nick toys, and they want/need them to look entirely different for that reason, and ONLY that reason. I'm sorry, but if you try and convince anyone, even yourself, that the new Turtles were designed for any reason other than "Sell More Toys", you're absolutely wrong. I respect your enthusiasm and the hope the movie can still be good, but as far as the designs, sorry, you're wrong. Focus Groups and Toy Potential. It's how movies work. And I, for one, have officially reached the age where I get pissed off when toy companies try to pander to me at the expense of actually creating Real Characters.

I could care less if the general public agrees. The general public are the reason there are seventeen Fast & Furious movies. The general public doesn't know dick. Am I surprised that they fall head-over-heels for a product designed entirely to appeal to the lowest common denominator? Think about that really, really hard. "Most people in general really like the new designs." Read: "The rabble continue to swallow everything dumbed-down and spoon-fed to them by their corporate masters, because that's how Marketing works and popular consensus is God." Absolutely none of that makes those designs anything less than lousy. Sorry. People liking what they're told to like is nothing new at all, and it doesn't change a thing.

It's not just you, guy, sorry if you thought I was addressing you specifically in this post. I just wanted to jump off of that one line I quoted and make a point from it. The point being that for some reason, to a lot of people, not liking the new designs automatically makes one a crusty old fart who can't handle change. And that's not the truth at all, at least not entirely. It's that those designs, and a whole lot more of what we've seen of the movie so far, just plain looks like sh*t.

It's kind of sad, really. You can't even be excited for a new live action, well funded Ninja Turtles summer blockbuster. You're too consumed with irritable hate.

So in combination with the majority here being stuck in overly nostalgic mode, throw in a dash of communal hate for Michael Bay on the internet, specifically from nerd types who liked Transformers, Ninja Turtles, 80's slasher flicks and you get one big HATE pot here on the Technodrome forums.

BTW the Friday the 13th, and Texas Chainsaw remakes he produced stand up with the best of anything in their respective franchises. And even the NOES remake while not even being close to the original, is at worst as good as any of the other films in the series. The only other decent one being Dream Warriors.

I'm sure the same will be with the turtles. TMNT II, III, Next Mutation, TMNT 2007 all were nothing special.

It's like a community hate festival here. Anyone who likes the designs are passive-aggressively deemed casuals, or studio plants. It's overwhelmingly negative.

I gotta ask out of curiosity, would you be this overtly enthusiastic for the live-action movie itself if the production staff did a complete 180 with these designs, and made these 2014 Turtles excessively cute? Cuter than even the OT Turtles or Nick Turtles?

But they have their basic designs........ just minus the knee and elbow pads (as far as we know. They may sport that traditional look w/ the knee/elbow pads and none of the new stuff at some or various points, just like the Foot and possibly Shredder do theirs.).

They have made additions, but it's still very much recognizable as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

What you described about Batman would NOT be recognizable as Batman unless someone told you it was supposed to be Batman. That doesn't apply here.

The only thing you are right about is the difference not liking a design, and hating the change itself.

For example, I love the Man of Steel Superman suit, but I hate that they made the change in the first place, when it didn't have to be changed.

However if I my say so myself, it sounds like you hate both.

And you right, I do dislike the designs and I think the change is pointless...but I've spelled out exactly why I feel that way, and I'm not going to repeat it all again.

BUT I can tell you that it's not purely nostalgia or blind nerd rage. I still like the IDW books and they are quite a bit different than the Turtles I grew up with. As are the Nick Turtles, and I like them too. The only Turtle things I can point to disliking were Next Mutation and the 2 Direct to Video musicals (Turtle Tunes and Christmas). FellowChucker nailed it.

First off I just wanna say that 'Next Mutation' blew, regardless of how anyone feels about the character designs. With that being said, while I wasn't crazy about them, I never really had a problem with the designs overall, except maybe Mike's/Don's masks, the badges with the initials, and their facial features. Obviously, you gotta attribute the low quality costumes to the show's smaller budget in comparison to the movies. I've always sorta felt the real problem was that those particular designs weren't fitting for a live-action TV show. They would've been better suited for a cartoon or comic book series. I remember collecting the 'NM' action figures back in the day and thinking they looked better as toys. Now that I think about it, maybe they would've looked better in CGI, instead of foam rubber suits.

Personally, I don't see any real design similarities between the those in 'Next Mutation' and the new movie, except that they're really muscular in both incarnations. However it isn't like these are the first times the turtles have been designed that way. I guess I didn't think much of it.

Those god-awful concerts/musicals are a perfect example of what I'm referring to when I say The Absolute Worst has been done to this franchise countless times already!! Even as a kid, I found them to be extremely cringe-worthy. I distinctly remember going to the local video store as a kid and walking right by those pieces of **** without thinking twice on my way to rent 'Secret Of the Ooze' for the 800th time.

I honestly have never ventured into watching that coming out of the shell tour. I watched the movies many times, but never the live concert, why? I haven't the foggiest why I never watched it. Also when Michelle Ivey sang one of the songs on one of the shows featuring her, it kind made me cringe a bit. What a cheesy song.

When I saw the first episode of next mutation I knew my turtles days were over for a while. It was like watching the power rangers only in turtle outfits and I was very turned off and then I heard they even made an appearance and that was even worse to my mind, yuck!:o

There was never anything bad really, so the next mutation was different and met with an uproar. You get used to change. With the change in design for 2k3 that was a great show, and now a couple people have latched onto the nick series for some reasons I'm not quite sure of and I think just the fact that this is a movie has a big part in it as well. But it was mainly just the change in scenery I believe.

I don't remember having a problem with the way the turtles looked in TNM. The only problem I had was they got rid of the turtles being brothers so it wouldn't be weird if one of them hooked up with venus.

I felt like the property grew up with me when I got around to reading the old mirage stuff in high school. To me it doesn't get anymore badass then the turtles as they were originaly intended. If you're going to try to make them more hardcore than that you're not going to do it by dressing them up

Michael Bay ... producer
Ian Bryce ... producer
Eric J. Crown ... executive producer
Andrew Form ... producer
Bradley Fuller ... producer
Scott Mednick ... producer
Napoleon Smith III ... executive producer
Denis L. Stewart ... executive producer
Galen Walker ... producer
Its not just Micheal bay

Point still stands there's alot of Assumptions going around as fact, there's alot of missing context and alot of conspiracy theories, we just don't know enough and those who think they have seen enough to judge the WHOLE movie are arrogant. Don't like what you see Go complain in a corner about it. This site has virtually turned into a pissing and moaning center of bitching and it's annoying for people who want to honestly speculate and discuss the movie and What could be a great tmnt movie.

Blah BLah BLah Micheal Bay BLah BLah BLah Under developed Characters Blah Blah Blah over the top Blah BLah Blah,

We're talking about a movie with Four Mutated Talking NInja Turtles OF COURSE its going to be over the top. Alot of people Like the costumes Alot more then are bitching on this site Just go anywhere else online and see for your selves.

Haters go ahead and boycott the movie i don't wanna deal with your fat heads in the theater anyway.

END rant

NO its assumed.... And know know there's like three executive producers and like 7 other producers so who's the one guy pulling all the string??? No one. You can spout all the conspiracy theories you want but doesn't make it any more true.

It's like the president and congress. Bay being the president, congress and over rule it, but most of the time the president always gets his way.

He is not an executive producer meaning a head producer, he's just a Normal producer, if he was an executive producer then yes he would be the "president" but he's not his name it's just attached. Look at the list i gave you there's at least the other people above him

Dude, those guys are not "above" Michael Bay.

If you seriously think he has LESS say on this movie than those other producers and that director, I've got so many bridges to sell you.

Seriously , It says right there Micheal Bay-Producer Do you know the difference between executive producer and Producer is pretty simple to know executive producer has more say and power then a producer.

Sure i have no idea what im saying.

Michael Bay bashing is still tired. It was boring before, but is now egregiously exhausting.

BRAD FULLER. That's the name. If you're pissed off, or if you're in love with this version, please refer to the actual brain child behind this production.

He has a name, and his name is Brad Fuller.

If you are at all interested in having a better understanding of the w5's behind the decisions made in making this new film, I've posted links to 4 videos of Brad Fuller speaking to a class where he shares the way in which Platinume Dunes approaches their projects.

If you have an hour, it's worth it. It's a very candid look at the success and failures of PD over the last few years, and briefly talks about TMNT. The videos are a few years old, but it's very informative, and really hammers home the PD formula, as well as how "involved" Michael Bay really is.

After looking at everything we know about the film, it's easy to see why it's been met with more trepidation rather than anticipation. But now, I've decided to accept the movie for what it is, I feel like the trailer will no doubt secure my opinion on the movie.

Yeah, but producers generally have more input, creatively, than Exec. Producers.

However, Bay, as well the other Platinum Dunes producers, had TF4 to worry about also. And TF4 was Bay's priority over TMNT considering he, well, is directing that.

But if anyone thinks Michael Bay had nothing to do at all with this creative direction of this film, just remember who was in the picture w/ the maquettes.

Also has to do with the quality. It's a crappy budget tv show that wasn't taking itself seriously compared to an actual movie meant for theaters. Even if they went with the classic non-CGI rubber costume look, you can tell it will look leaps and bounds better than the Next Mutation. I know it's not fair to compare the movies to a tv show.... but you can't ignore the lame quality of their looks either.

On the other hand, the designs do look way better when DRAWN than on the show. I remember that Venus drawing that was circulating a lot actually made the character looks bad-ass. Plus the drawings of them on the side of the Next Mutation Tiger game made them look awesome too. Hell, even the action figures looked better than they did in the show. Those were just some really awful costumes.
