I know I know, another design thread. I'm sincerly sorry, but people keep saying "meh" but not really giving an explanation. Everyone says there are good and bad things about the designs. I hear people explaining the bad, but not really seeing any explanation for good. So here you go, discuss why you do or do not like it. Pros and cons, and all that good stuff.

Everyone is just saying "meh" or it's good but could be done better. I've seen two defenses repeated for good. At least we are getting someone new, and that they don't hate Michael bay. While I've seen a multitude of bad, like too much going on, lips, nostrils, ECt. I guess it's mainly for good, but if you look in the good or bad poll nearly everyone saying good doesn't give a proper explication.

I think it's a bit too much. We don't need the Turtles personalities telegraphed in their designs. The Nick series kind of does that by making them different builds and with other minor details, but nothing to the extent of this. I agree with Leo when he said something along the lines of, "Why stop there? Let's give Donnie a Star Trek Science Officer shirt and a I (Heart) Big Bang Theory sticker on his shell." Even little LITTLE kids, who everyone assumes is outside this movies target audience, don't need the Turtles personas spelled out so vividly.

I am not a terribly big fan of what has been revealed so far. I like the individuality of the turtles themselves, but there is a bulkiness to their bodies that does not sit right with me. This bulkiness is not as apparent with the film stills, but when they are translated to the figures themselves it is drastically visible.
All in all these are just prototype mock ups, so many of the issues could be fixed by release.

Look at the good or bad thread re majority of the people that pick good. Just say that they are "meh" or say they voted good and leave it at that. The majority of the bad explain why. This thread is More so for the people with the good thinking. I've clearly read all the threads it's not spam or laziness as some feeble minded person might assume. The only explanation I've seen really is that it is something new. The rest of the people who think good are just attacking those who think its bad. If you wanna give some legitamate reasons why you like it or dislike it leave the thread. If you don't like it, skip over it. Idk what to tell you haha. If it pisses you off that's your own problem man. Those who's minds are made up can't be saved.

I have been a fan of tmnt all my life from way back to the OT through to now.
I've seen many interations over that time and these new movie versions are yet another.
Some iterations have sat better with me from the various artists that have been part of the tmnt universe than others, however all of them have been more than ok.
I've never expected their look to same the same over time and I'm sure many others have too. These new versions capture my imagination in way none of the other versions could have. They are the most seriously ass kicking versions I have ever seen, and that's not to say there haven't been any ass kicking versions before. there is a seriousness about them that has never been realised to this extent before and it genuinely feels fresh. The nostrils are a welcome addition and see no problem with them. The face has been more humanised and yet retained the turtle look. Hopefully facial expressions will work really well in the movie given all the humanised features. As for the armour and gear, awesome! Batman only had a very simple suit that was all about an image, then over time it got more complex and the turtles are no different. The various influences in their looks are striking and charismatic helping to place them in the real world. What if there really were tmnts living amongst us? how would they have grown up and lived being influenced by all the things they would have been exposed to? Their look explains a lot of that to me and sure others as well. Whether the tmnt are teenagers or not in this new film, they have grown up. If I want to see other versions then they are there to see, but they are not so serious looking (tv shows/movies and games - not some of the comics I should add). These new versions embrace a new era and universe, I can only guess, and to have the tmnts really be part of something epic they need to look the part and as they were they might have been ok but these new versions look more encompassing of the extremes I would like to see the tmnt movies go to. Nothing is lost in these new looks as to who each of them is, if anything it really adds to them and builds upon a look towards what they will look like over time in future adventures as they get older perhaps. truly loving the new designs from the nike on leo's arm guard to mikey's toes sticking out of his shoes. It all says who they are, have been an so on. I really believe this will be the movie we have all been waiting for, whether we think so or not. It's always possible it could suck and there may be some who'll genuinely hate it. But as the votes for the designs being good go beeing on the good side, I'm guessing there'll be more fans of the new film than not. These are the living breathing turtles that I could more believe these tmnts walk amongst us than the original movie verions (they could too, but I find the new ones make the old ones seem a bit dated). Nothing to hate about them everything to love they look freaking awesome and am already using the leaked image of leo as my wallpaper. Love the new look tmnt, Cowabunga!!!

I, for one don't like some of the designs because the clothing options do not appeal to me along with the lips, noses and overall realistic look. I don't mind Leo and Donnie except for the added regular glasses over Don's mask but Raph and Mikey's I despise. That's basically why I said meh, because I don't hate or love all four turtle's designs.

I'll play along. Since I haven't done an individual line-up of each design, I'll do it here.

So here is why I don't care all that much for the new movies designs and why I think they fail on a pure design level and as the public mainstream blockbuster movie level.

And this is based off what we've seen so far as of the date of my post indicates = the pictures of the Maquettes, the Halloween children's costume, the leaked Poster, the 12 inch toys, the pictures of Shredder and the amateur photos of the Foot Soldiers.

Foot Soldier.
The Foot have always been very recognizable in the TMNT history. The bug eyed ninja masks are very unique compared to the usual Ninja designs throughout the pop culture franchises.

This design is just generic Hollywood black ops military guys with laughable masks on their faces. not very comic/pop culture ninja, it feels almost like a lot of the early 2000's superhero movies being ashamed of being comic book movies, thus changing the costumes to something of lather and biker suits.

The Shredder.
Oroku Saki have been a victim of the racist backwards way of whitewashing, with roles for POC Because white isn't a color (even thought black isn't a color either, but I don't make up PC words) being of shortage, naturally we'll change the race of the established character to white in the movie adaptation. Not racist or insensitive at all.

Anyway. Eric Sachs, a gentleman and a leader of the Foot Soldiers. We've seen pictures of his Shredder outfit, instead of the tradition and iconic Ninja garb with added armor pieces, he now wears a exoskeleton jacked up with a chainmail like cape with knives around the borders, his mask have a stylised skullface with red evil eyes. You can see the Shredder arms covers over Eric's arms and are secured around his arms, no gloves.

it all looks like the people designing him watched some anime or played Metal Gear Rising and thought cyborg-exoskeletons are cool. Maybe Eric dons The Shredder and The Shredder is the name of some prototype exoskeleton suit he got his hands on due to his military connections, maybe even Shredder is an acronym?

Stealth
Humanoid
Recon
Exoskeleton
Defensive
Demolition
Elimination
Robot

It's too heavy looking, too loud and too messy looking. he looks like he's going to have a hard time moving quickly enough to fight four master martial arts warriors skilled in stealth and deception. The Shredder suit looks like it belongs in one of the Transformers movies and not on a Ninja master, or even on a Military leader using a prototype exoskeleton.

Leonardo.
I did not care much for Leonardo's design, and the more I look at it and studies it the more I loathes it.

First up the turtle itself, the body:
His shell is huge, really freaking big. it really takes away the Turtle aspect and makes him look more like a Tortoise which for me is a huge deal, I love turtles, Ninja and non-Ninja. A fair representation is important to me, a tortoise have a big domed shell and do not fit the mutant Ninja aspect as most turtles have a more aerodynamic shell which looks aesthetically better for a humanoid Chelonian.

And Box Turtles wouldn't fit the TMNT either, sure they are turtles and not tortoises even thought they are terrestrials, their shells are just like a tortoise. leo's shell just looks too big and clunky, similar issue I had with the 4kids cartoon, but in a live-action movie, this should be taken into consideration on how a humanoid turtle can walk upright and do martial arts without being top heavy. This is of course pseudo-physics and Pseudo-Science, turtles can't be bipedal, not with a Plastron and Carapace, since it it is a part of their spine and ribcage, real turtles can't bend their spine as humans can. It's the same principal as Centaurs live under, Centaurs are a physical impossibility, you can not have a creature like that in real life without it topples over by too much weight in the front, but you still design it to look plausible, same with Dragons.

Leonardo's face:
His face isn't the worst of the four, hid facial structure is pretty decent, but the main factor is the very eye catching lips. Although they look intense on the poster, the Maquette, it isn't that a bother since the textures isn't that intense. But they are still distracting. His nose is fine, it's not as professionally defined and modeled as the turtles are in the video game Out of the Shadows, but it's okay, just not as good as the game. Which shows that the OotS designers knows a bit more what they are doing.

Leonardo's clothes:
The costume is atrocious, that Leonardo is the "Samurai Warrior" is not really all that presented. As a person with a slightly more then just a casual interest of feudal Japan and the Samurai culture, I find Leo's attire as a insult, it is down right insulting to say that it's supposed to be Samurai-like.

He have some bits and pieces cobbled together in a incoherent mess. The chest armor is just a bamboo mat from shush rolling which have seen better days, this is not a proper cuirass and is downright useless. and it's connected with ropes that ends under his shell? Maybe Leo have drilled some metal hoops under his outer Carapace scutes to attach things on? I've heard of owners piercing their pet turtles outer scutes to attach a leash on their turtle.

I have on several occasions complained about Leonardo's shoulder plates. they are not connected to anything, maybe that tapering he have holds the shoulder plates on if the plates have some hooks under, but that's still a weak explanation. I have worn shoulder plates, the right way and the wrong way. And I tell you this, if they aren't properly attached to your armor's shoulder area they will move and wiggle around and eventually slip off your shoulder, hindering proper movement. The way the look like now is beyond idiotic and it makes Leo look like a gigantic moron, and those Shoulder plates are not looking like traditional Samurai shoulder plates.

Donatello.
Donnie suffers the same as Leo's body, huge tortoise shell, face okay (the best in my opinion) and he does not have the lips issue as the other turtles. But he looks so sickly skinny when compared to the other turtles, give the poor guy some UVB's and a pack of cuttle bones before a bro hug from Raph kills the poor guy.

Donatello's Clothes.
Neeeerd!! Well, strangely enough Donnie's leg clothes makes him look more like a Samurai then Leonardo ever will, not a fan of the metal looking Bo, a Bo is made of wood, it's in it's very name: Bo = Wood. the goggles are a nice addition, but I think the AVGN wants the nerd glasses back. The glasses are seriously silly looking, I don't mind Donnie popping up glasses when he's reading something small, but those glasses with the tape are a bit too much.

The proton pack on his back... Is is glued on, strapped on or surgically attached? can't tell, but it looks ridiculous.

it does look like Don is having the one-shoulder plate, just a shoulder plate on one shoulder. yet he have no shield or armor cover over the arm. but it does (by the grainy pictures and toy) looks like it is secured to something unlike Leo's shoulder plates.

Part 2

Raphael.
Raphael is big, clearly he is the bruiser of the group, the tank, the Hulk. Do you get it yet or shall I continue?

... The thing, the Ram-Man...

Raphael's body:
Rapahel's body is ridiculously big compared to the other turtles, now both 2007 movie and the new Nick cartoon and the OotS game had different body types for the green team and Raph was the muscle guy, not the tallest but certainly the biggest. And they certainly kept that here, and maxed it to the max. Nothing subtle about it, Raph is the token strong guy.

His face. His face is terrible, the worst of the four. His nose is big and extruding, looking like the nose of a gorilla or a chimpanzee. There's too much primate/human in his face, and his lips suffering the same issues as Leonardo. They are very distracting, not as much as the nose, but still his face looks just so wrong.

Raphael's clothes:
His clothes are not very urban looking, as he seems to be coming straight out of a Hyborian age adventure with that loincloth thing he have going on. There's some wrappings on his limbs, but I really don't like the asymmetry among his limbs accessories. One red knee pad and one white knee pad, different tapering/wrapping. it looks less appealing and more cluttered even though he is the least dressed turtle.

Michelangelo.
We saw Mikey's design first on the child costume, and it was bad. looked really bad. And when we saw the Maquettes and the rest, the design is still terrible. But, in my opinion. Mikey is among the better lookers when it comes to his costume. But he still suffers the same issues as Raph does in his face.

Mikey's body:
Mikey's body is on the same level as with Leo, they all have that shell issue. His body physique is fine as Leo's body, not overly muscular and not too skinny. his face is a problem, he does have the same nose issue Raph is having. The primate nose of Mikey isn't as prominent as Raph is dealing with, but it's still very extruding and more primate then a classic iconic turtle snout. And he got dem lips, they are as Leo and Raph very eye catching distracting.

Mikey's costume:
his costume is the most urban of the four, and is the second least bugging one for me. I wish they could settle in either long legs or short legs on his pants, as they are they look dumb and kinda silly. His Puka beads are fine, nothing wrong with them, although two necklaces? Seems kinda dangerous to wear jewelry in a fisticuffs fight. not a fan of his shoes, why wear shoes of you don't fit them? His toes are poking out, it must be tiresome not getting a proper grip with those shoes. The waist hoodie looks rather silly, but he can't wear it normally I guess. The hand and wrist wrappings are fine.

And that is my go through of the designs, i find them very flawed and troublesome, minor neat things in there but over all a messy unprofessional design that shouldn't be in a comeback movie.

That's the kind of post we needed. As for mikey he really stands out and contradicts the group. If that's his regular chill out clothes does that mean the other wear all that bulky crap in their downtime too? And if that's his fight gear why is he the only one not dressed to fight? It's like everyone got their ninja batman armor stuff going on and he's just walking in with a regular shirt and jeans. Like mr Joe average walking alongside the avengers.

I'm not really a fan of the Turtle designs. They're not what I would want to see but compared to the "lets get anybody and everybody who'll say 'Yes!'" casting and the insanity that is going on with Shredder's design, the fact that Mikey's wearing a sweatshirt would seem to be the least of the film's problems at this point.

Well, you like it or not, the movie will bring a lot(maybe I'm exaggerating here) of new fans for the franchise. And I see no problem on that. Myself for example, was only become a true fan after watching the 2007's movie . And even that this movie wasn't not even close criticized as this one has been now, we all know that it wasn't great at all.

So I have to say, the more the merrier, after all, if someone start to like of tmnt by watching this movie, he sure can search for more material related to the franchise and see that tmnt is more than a (good/bad/disgusting/as you prefer) movie.

I like the new designs for the most part (with the exception of Raph's durag and sunglasses). Sure I have a few gripes (yeah the nostrils and lips are a little too pronounced), but otherwise they're WAY better than I expected. Part of the reason I like them is cuz they're different. I don't understand why redesigning them is considered so unacceptable when this movie represents a reboot/rebirth and they've looked the same for roughly 30 years. It'd be one thing if they were redesigned to the extent that they were completely unrecognizable, but that's not the case!! It's not like you couldn't tell who was who when you first saw those images! Almost all of the X-Men have been redesigned several times over the past 30 years while still remaining recognizable. The same goes for zillions of other Marvel and DC characters, so why is it such a big deal when the TMNT are given a new look??

I know I'm gonna get roasted for this, but I honestly don't see why this movie is getting so much hate when we know so little about it (Michael Bay's involvement aside). What kills me is that it's like some people act like the TMNT franchise/property hasn't already been ruined and put through the wringer a zillion times before over the past 20 or so years. Let's be real! The franchise's initial mainstream breakthrough success came in the form of a cartoon adaption that was NOTHING like the source material. IMO it can't get any worse at this point. This might come off as either overly optimistic or extremely indifferent, but I'm convinced that this movie couldn't possibly out-suck the numerous ****** reboots/reincarnations we've seen thus far (NOT including the 2k3 series, of course). I dunno, you guys. I'm sure I'm around the same age as most of you (27) and we probably share a somewhat similar story when it comes to the start of our TMNT fandom. I can sort of understand everyone's passion (and cynicism) when it comes to this movie, because we as fans have been let down/disappointed so many times before. Although personally, at this point if it only turns out to be a halfway decent PG-13 action/sci-fi film (with some actual 'ninja' **** and less kiddie humor/goofy slapstick bs), I'll be more than satisfied.

Ugh... the same "it looks bad ass, that's all that matters" response, over and over again.

Yes... that's all we should be focusing on. Let's forget about the practicality of their designs (especially their clothes): Leonardo wearing ancient armor to possibly fight a futuristic armor wearing Shredder, Donatello wearing nerd glasses (when a genius like him should know that he should be wearing contacts minimally) during ninja fighting, or Michelangelo's loose chains hanging all over the place (which is gonna get annoying doing flips and somersaults), the hulkish size of them compared to the Turtle Van, the conspicuous gigantic trenchcoat disguise in the middle of New York City, Shredder (if we are to assume is human) miraculously being able to fight quickly with so much heavy armor. I mean TMNT is already a williing suspension of disbelief, so apparently I guess, why not take it to the point of having minimal practicality as possible right?

Or let's also forget about Megan Fox's bland acting, or the reputations of Bay and Liebesman because now the Turtles look "bad ass". Let's forget about all those concerns, because that's the most important thing, right? The "bad ass" image...?

While I will reserve my final judgement when I see the movie; the worries, concerns, and cyncism (premature to a degree) of some fans is understandable based on whatever information is slowly trickling in. Trust me, I would love to be proven wrong and have this film turn out well, but what should I expect when this movie is seemingly transforming these Turtles, and maybe even the premise itself to a degree, into almost caricatures of themselves?

I mean TMNT is already a williing suspension of disbelief, so apparently I guess, why not take it to the point of having minimal practicality as possible right?

Or let's also forget about Megan Fox's bland acting, or the reputations of Bay and Liebesman because now the Turtles look "bad ass". Let's forget about all those concerns, because that's the most important thing, right? The "bad ass" image...?

While I will reserve my final judgement when I see the movie; the worries, concerns, and cyncism (premature to a degree) of some fans is understandable based on whatever information is slowly trickling in. Trust me, I would love to be proven wrong and have this film turn out well, but what should I expect when this movie is seemingly transforming these Turtles, and maybe even the premise itself to a degree, into almost caricatures of themselves?

that's what I'm saying. I'm not completely against dressing the turtles up for the movie if they really feel they have to but why not do it practically. as it is with the possible exception of Donny none of what they have on looks particularly useful. some of it actually looks like it would make it harder to do ninja things

Man, stop it. You act like the original cartoon and the movies (which I grew up on and watched religiously) didn't do this already! All that breaking the 4th wall ****, stupid gags, the cornball sitcom-y plots/plot devices, Vanilla Ice, pizza, the millions and millions of lame forgettable villains/allies (created specifically for the cartoon/movies instead of adapting some villains from the original comics. 'Keno', anyone??), etc. You're sitting here going on about what accessories would or wouldn't be practical in battle?? I got 3 words for you: Combat Cold Cuts! My point is TMNT has caricatured itself countless times in the past, particularly through the movie sequels and the original cartoon. Where was the artistic integrity in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pies??? I'm not trying to argue with you. I'm just saying that after all this time, it's too late in the game to defend or debate over the integrity/quality of the franchise. It's not like the property has been handled perfectly thus far. I'm saying you all need to stop acting like Michael Bay/Platinum Dunes is the worst thing to happen to TMNT. The worst has been done several times before! We all know we're never gonna see anything close to a 'TMNT Begins' as much as we might want to! So yeah I guess you're right in a way. After all the years of seeing this property fail to live up to its full potential because of countless studios/writers/directors mishandling it, I feel like all we can hope for is a 'Bad Ass' movie!

What **** reboots are you talking about? Both the current Nick cartoon and IDW comic are very well received.

'Next Mutation' was garbage. 'Fast Forward' was ****. The 'Image' Comics series was garbage. I've watched some of the Nick cartoon and enjoyed it, but I'm not a kid anymore so I'm all set. IMO it's what the original cartoon should've been. The IDW comic is sick.

It's never to late to talk about the integrity and quality of this property.

You might not like sausage-chucks and bland ice cream rapper, but at least it was somewhat within the realm of it's own premise. Even a caricature must still be properly handled to be good, it takes work.

And it's laughable that people expects this movie to be "serious" if the designs are silly 90's Xtreme and most of what we've seen isn't exactly on a dark tonal level. The humor in the new TMNT movie is most likely be on the same level as the Transformers movies, and we can only count us lucky if it isn't as bad as TF2 level of "humor" and ONLY like the others.

I just like the dark look to them, clothes dont bother me much. Plus some of you people are hilarious, you saw some action figures and believe they will look like that throughout the whole movie. There have been a lot of variations of turtles toys dating way back to the original ones. Just looking at the movie poster, I find nothing wrong with them.

Why not?
It's what we see on the poster for the toy fair, there are no other movie toy variants, that's how the Maquettes looks like when it would have been easier and cheaper to print/sculpt them without the clothes.

What we see is most likely the default on how the turtles looks like in this movie, maybe during downtime the turtles will take off excessive parts of their costume, but most likely not. Maybe the turtles gets stripped from their costumes when taken by the Foot, but that still doesn't change that the designs we've seen is most likely the default that will stay for the majority of the movie.

And even without the clothes, I personally still have issues with the very core design of all the turtles, baring form minor issues to big ones.

An hour of research would tell you what people would think is good what worked what didn't. Clearly they didn't even bother to do that is just insulting.

You gotta realize Viacom same company that wants us to believe TNA is real. Anyways it's f'd what they are doing but there's nothing we can really do about it, we can complain, the majority of people can complain, but when you see the trailer you're gonna see a million quotes from really unknown critics saying "greatest thing since sliced bread" and people are gonna end up seeing it. The best you can do it boycott it or stream it so they don't get your money. A few people over a period of time add up. As long as they don't break even there won't be a sequel, that's pretty far fetched though. Considering the budget was $150 mil or a little over, movie tickets cost like 11 per person that's not in 3D or if you go on a bargain day in your local theatre has them it's $5-8.50 . So it's pretty much hanging on a prayer and if we do manage to not meet their requirements and they don't make a sequel we are looking at about a decade long drought until another one if that. And we don't know if it'll be done right then either.

Yeah, you can. You can tell what they look like from the poster and the maquettes. So you can make a judgement if you like the look or not. I did the same thing with the Man of Steel suit. First preview pic, and I knew I hated the suit, still do. Doesn't mean I hate the movie and doesn't mean I will hate this movie. I still hate the designs.

Also, since the thread asks why you like or hate the designs, guess I figured I would try and give reasons to why I hate them, but best I can do is they just look like ass. Raph looks like a deformed monster, Donnie looks plain stupid with the tech crap all over him. Mike's face is hideous and I guess Leo is slightly okay. The clothes on Mikey just seem pointless to me. I also don't see the point in Leo having the samurai looking armor. I don't mind Raph's wraps and all. They all might be fine with just something like that on them.

I don't get how you could take this stuff so seriously. What predicates criticism of the practicality of armor? The Van? The trenchcoat disguise? (Which is WAY more practical than exposing face and legs, like in the past.) Has TMNT not always been this ridiculous?

For me, the more a film or TV series wants its audience to take it seriously, the more standards it has to follow in maintaining that tone, otherwise a small flaw will undermine the foundation of a serious tone. My expectations for most films/shows typically follow whatever the production staff wants me to accept. A few of the reasons I'm taking this movie "seriously" is because of the imagery used in this poster, the higher degree of violence by having a PG-13 rating, the term of "realism" thrown in about the Turtles' lips, with Bay and Liebesman associated with the film (how often did either of them intentionally make comedy or parody films?), and other details which seem to conflict the "ridiculous tone".

These more-threatening (non-cute), aggressive looking Turtles on the "Ninja Turtles" poster compared to the curious, awkward peering Turtles in the very first 1990 movie poster, are starkly different from each other, and that first movie is considered one of the darkest interpretations of TMNT. The apparent 2014 movie poster wants to convey that these aggressive looking Turtles should be taken more seriously unlike the previous poster images we've seen of the first three live-action movies.

So I ask then, with signs indicating it's a movie that wants to be taken seriously, how should I react when it doesn't even address the practicality issues? Hey... who knows, maybe the movie will be a further parody of itself, only confirming how truly ridiculous TMNT is then. (Which it always has been, to be frankly honest.) Okay... **shrug** if that's what it wants to do, I'm cool with that then since I enjoy TMNT in my own way, but then... it will only cement further in the mainstream's mind how childish TMNT is/was despite having a PG-13 rating, and seemingly trying to portray itself seriously. But whatever... **shrug**

How the X-Men were redesigned was actually the inverse of how the TMNT were. They were simplified and given a more uniform look. Not only is that an extension of the comics were their costumes are quasi-uniforms but done out if of a very valid concern that their costumes may not translate well to live action.

That isn't an issue with TMNT because something very close to the original designs for worked very well in live action

Part of the charm of those designs and why they have translated well across different mediums is because they are simply. That's not to say that a redesign wouldn't work but what are the odds you're going to find something that has the near universal appeal of the original? I think many would agree this isn't it.

You can come up with valid rationales of why it's a good idea in principal such as "realism" but these can easily be countered with these designs that it's just a circular argument but what it really boils is they don't look good.

Far from badass they look laughable, so over the top in both anatomy and their apparel. It looks like what a bunch of old men this is cool when it is in fact eye rolling.

Also given what the actor portraying Raphael publicly said about the characterization of the turtles leads me to believe that their radically individualized is there because the turtles act the same. For example Donatello will say or do little to show he's the smart one but we "get" it because he has gadgets and nerd glasses, Leo wont say or do much to show he's the leader but we get it because he is the most ninja-looking.

Here's the thing; we do know a fair bit about this movie despite little coming from official sources (which is a worrying sign in itself)

Heck we even had an earlier version of the script. We know from set photos that despite the changes they're still using that script as a basis for a lot of the action in the movie.

Although personally, at this point if it only turns out to be a halfway decent PG-13 action/sci-fi film (with some actual 'ninja' **** and less kiddie humor/goofy slapstick bs), I'll be more than satisfied.

Here's an interesting question I haven't seen anyone else raise; how much ninja action do you think those overly turtles with massive shells are capable of? Surely stealth, speed and agility aren't likely.

I remember when we saw the set photos of the turtle actors in the motion cap suits and raising the same question and being assured by defenders that the finished products wont have such big shells. I suppose they could find a way around it with cgi but it would still look stupid. Another reason I don't like those designs.

Ok here is my thoughts on the designs, They are ugly and repulsive... A child could see these pictures and have nightmares.... They will drive away some of there female fan base right of the bat.
I liked being able to looks at the turtles and enjoy the show but now there just ugly... Granted I hear the argument that " Real Turtles are not cute" and that's true. But what is realistic about talking turtles anyway?
That being said, I was worried about the Nick designs, and I ended up liking them. The first time I saw Kari's picture I hated it... now she is one of my favorite villains.
There is some hope I guess, but I'm pretty sure this will not be a movie my whole family can watch and enjoy together, and that is a big let down for me.

'Next Mutation' was garbage. 'Fast Forward' was ****. The 'Image' Comics series was garbage. I've watched some of the Nick cartoon and enjoyed it, but I'm not a kid anymore so I'm all set. IMO it's what the original cartoon should've been. The IDW comic is sick.

you make some really good points but really a lot of that was because of the censorship of the time. lets be honest there was no way a straight adaption of the comic would have made it past censors back in the day. the turtles would've never made it onto tv without toning the concept down and brightening it up. in the process it became a 30 minute toy commercial just like every other action cartoon on at the time. and the movie series started with the dark tone of the source material and only a bit of the cartoons influence. it would have probably stayed that why if parents never complained. its them that we have to thank for the combat cold cuts, vanilla ice, keno, and a shredder who went from being cold, calculating and lethal to being so bumbling he killed himself with his own temper tantrum. but here in 2014 when even in the cartoon rapheal can get angry and almost stab casey jones in the face there's no reason we can't get movie that takes itself seriously. if the people behind it take their job seriously

The clothes makes it seem like their trying too hard we get it,Donnie's the nerd Mikey's the party dude Raph's the tough guy and Leo's the leader, but there's more to these characters than those caricatures it's like they've become caricatures of their caricatures. And the less I say about their hideous facial features the better.

A simple personalized belt would have been so much better. Leonardo could have had a more traditional Obi belt, Donnie could have a more handyman/utility belt for his stuff, Mikey could have a more contemporary belt, fancy buckle and some custom works to hold his chucks. Raph could have had a broader belt a little bit like a strongman belt.

Boom! Personalized without getting insane busy designs.

Do we know that they are partially human?

As far as we know the movie might use the Mirage origin which means they are turtles mutated into a highly intelligent bipedal form with pose able thumbs, but still not human.

One might argue that the Fred wolf and the nick turtles are partially human by the design of the mutagen and the way it mutates it's victim. And the IDW turtles are human in memory as they were the reincarnated children of Hamato Yoshi.

lets put it this way why would there master wear traditional robes but the turtle are naked save a few belts and leather straps and masks?

why is it so hard to grasp the turtles where personalized clothing'

If it was normal street wearing clothes, maybe I could see your point, even though its pigeon-holing these characters into extreme visual stereotyping. But I guess we are to assume these are their "fighting" clothes (right?), so why would aesthetic fashion be a preference over practicality/usefulness in fighting situations? It doesn't seem very logical, much less fit with Splinter's principles, in wearing such ostentatious gear when they could be hindrances/distractions to the Turtles in such lethal brawls.

Or let me put it this way, do you see military soldiers, martial arts experts, or even "ninjas" who are prepared for fighting/battle try to personalize their clothes? Especially to such a gaudy extreme? So why should the Turtles do so in these fighting situations, if we're to take their "ninja" fighting seriously?

I'm not quite sure if its for practicality for for appearances. I just feel as thought they have decided to dress the way they have because they have just for that reason nothing more nothing less and thinking it ridiculous for them to do this is extreme as if they were real they would in fact do this. I have seen people dress in clothes some might consider weird I in fact have dresses in clothes other have considered weird in away to express myself but there is nothing wrong with that everyone does it.

Samurai would wear ornamental samurai armor going into battle based on their clan and their person. Soldiers especially the more specialized military customize there gear and clothing to fit both situation and personality. I just don't feel its gaudy that like saying the kid that happens to like to dress a certain way is wrong and stupid and that's a wrong way of think that lead to people getting hurt. The fact of the matter is we haven't seen them in action they take off all the gear for battle for they may wear more gear for battle we just dont know yet but for what we do know its not the extreme and many are saying it just and expression which there is nothing wrong with.

It doesn't. I dress for comfort and mobility.

There was a great post on here by someone, I can't remember who, that said anybody saying that the reason the Turtles dress this way in this movie wasn't because of their personalities or to keep warm or any of that. It was simply because of the need to make as many unique-looking toys as possible. And anybody saying the clothes ARE because of their personalities(it's only barely partly true, since the clothing is a stereotypical extension of their personalities) or because of warmth or the glasses because of sunlight is waaaaay over thinking it. Wish I could find that post again.

Not fit in with style, but fit in with humans in general. Raphael seems to have gone a simpler way and used a doo rag over his head and shades, like a biker. And where do you get that Donatello has a laser cannon? I think that's a communications hub so they can communicate via turtle comms or something similar. Mikey has done the best job of fitting in style wise. You still see people with hoodies or sweaters tied around their waists....not many, but people do it. They were clothes to make them feel more human

So you'd rather lose fans the fast way? Haha. It would steer away anyone the people that wanna see it will and the people that don't wont. It's like that with any movie. If they have TV or internet then the have a window what they might think as Human and seeing as they have some human like sensibilities it is not a stretch that they might barrow item then see as humanizing to wear in a way that they may feel expresses there personalities. Trying to explain the new costumes with "personalized individuality" is probably a wee bit more then the designers ever thought about. They made the designs to differentiate the movie turtle toys from the current turtle toys, to sell more turtle toys.

It gives the kids a valid reason to nag their parents to get more turtles, cause they look vastly more different then what a Ninja Turtle usually do.

Of course they want to differentiate between the current tv Turtles and the Turtles from the past. Everything is about making money. I've heard people assuming it's supposed to be dark but aside from the fact that the turtles don't seem to look to very happy in the leaked stuff we've seen there's nothing to back it up. honestly with the channel 6 crew involved and the turtles in those accessorized outfits I wouldn't be surprised if this is the most light hearted version ever on the big screen. I just hope its like the tone of the first movie. in my opinion that's where they hit the sweet spot. dark atmosphere, dark situations, alternating between playful/ serious action scenes, and turtles who could go from being playful teenagers to being completely badass when necessary.the perfect balance of tmnt. I think the only way to make a turtle movie darker than the original is just go full mirage and have the turtles kill their enemies

Some of the most profitable movies in the past couple years not only made obscene amounts of money, but were actually really great movies too.

Are we really willing to have a bad film because it keeps the franchise going and just to have something different out there? We are suppose to support that ?!

Ok, how do you know this won't be a great movie? Because of the designs of the turtles and Shredder? Oh wait, let me guess...Michael Bay

I don't know it won't be a great movie.

But personally, for me, to me, it's not looking likely.

And yes, Michael Bay makes bad movies.

As does Jonathan Liebesman.

Although I hate the idea of whitewashing Shredder and rename him to Eric Sachs instead of being more inclusive and add more roles for people of color. I have one good thing to say about William Fictner being Shredder, at least they didn't put him in yellow face make-up like John Wayne playing Genghis Khan or Mickey Rooney as Yunioshi.

I think people should sit back before being over judgemental about the designs and movie.

I am not sure how I feel about Bay and his role over this movie, but all I can say is I did like his version of Nightmare on Elm Street, I can't even watch the old ones any more.

I want to see more pics trailers and the movie itself, so I am not being over cynical.

Bay was just the producer of the Nightmare remake, Samuel Bayer was the director. And that movie was all visual but no content, terrible reimagining of Freddy, looked cool. But man, did Jackie have some bad lines he desperately tried to sound good.

Freddy vs. Jason is amazing, not as a horror movie but in that cheesy monster vs. monster kind of way.

I feel the 2010 Nightmare remake lacked what made Freddy fun. He's such a huge personality and his evil charm from the original movies almost makes you forget that he does shady things to kids and kills them. The 201o movie just didn't "get" Freddy, he felt whiny and a bit pathetic. Which, I guess should be okay with what kind of person he is, but he is also supposed to be this bad ass bogeyman.

I think the 2010 remake would have been a much stronger movie if they went though with the fake plot twist they hinted at, that the kids was lying and Freddy was actually innocent. I think it would have been a great change to the story and still keep Freddy as a revenge thirsty creature.

Of the Platinum Dunes Horror remakes I think it's one of the weaker ones, Friday 13th wasn't very scary, but it did feel like a Friday 13th movie. Although I remember little of the Chainsaw Massacre, not helping I fell asleep watching it, something I usually never do with movies. Personally I kinda like the Amity Horror remake the best of them, it had a good atmosphere.

I'm kinda on the fence on seeing it, it could turn out to be a great movie despite my gripes wit the designs and the thing we've seen so far. Or it could be a so-bad-it's-good movie, something I thought Transformers Dark(side) of the Moon would be, sadly I was greatly disappointed there. It could be mediocre, boring movie with just pretty visuals. Or it could also be complete udder crap.

I just find the 2014 Movie Turtles' faces to be ugly-looking, frankly. Craig Farley and the designers for the 1990 movie managed to make the Turtles more realistic-looking but still appealing, so why can the same be said for this? I don't really mind the outfits the Turtles are wearing, though.

Nolan's movies aren't that good. They have a nice sheen to them and are as subtle as a machine gun, but they're downright laughable in parts for movies that try so hard to take themselves so utterly seriously.

Bay hires people to figure out his cinematography and they all look the same: bland music video-esque Mountain Dew commercials.

The only Nolan movie I can remember really thinking, "Could have been better." is Insomnia. Like the Batman flicks (though Rises is the weakest.) LOVE The Prestige, Memento is fun and Insception was OK, though I never went back to it...I ought to. Might need to IMDB Nolan to see if there are others I liked.

As for Bay, the only movies that I've seen of his that I know I don't like are the Transformers movies. Liked the Rock, liked Pain and Gain, liked The Island. Never saw Pearl Harbor...probably won't. Need to IMDB him for other I might have missed.

Never seen a Liebsman movie...wait take that back, saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Not the worst thing ever...but I don't remember much either. :P

I love the new designs, freakin awesome. I love how the turtles have evolved and changed over the years, adopting sociological trends and norms of that particular time period. Just think of all the new fans and generations of turtle fever that will be hatched from this new format. We love our old turtles for what they are but I fully welcome any new adaptations and designs that may follow , as long as they still stay true to the heart and soul of the original ones, which they did beautifully. Everyone has the right to their own opinion and let's not bash each other over these things, we can just politely agree to disagree.

The problem is the designs look like they're made for casuals. They resemble The Hulk, or Jim Lee's designs, in that they are muscle bound meatheads. The turtles never had massive muscles or bulk like this.

It feels like the people making this movie skimmed a Wikipedia entry and based their knowledge of the TMNT franchise on that. I wish Viacom pulled the plug when they had the chance. Contracts be damned.

Honestly they were pretty large in the 2k3 when compared to the slimmer redesigns. Honestly they almost look fat if you watch back to the sewers or turtles forever and then go back to watching the earlier seasons.

Doubt they were made with casuals in mind. They'd be confused as to all the weird changes.

I really shouldn't respond this this but on the off chance that you're a genuine fan who sincerely believes this...

I can't think of many examples of the turtles evolving with current trends or adopting pop culture norms of the time in the manner in which you say. The designs of the titular characters has generally remained consistent and it's worked well across multiple media for nearly thirty years.

The only time they have ever been redesigned in such an overt way and tried to channel what was seen as currently popular was Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation which happens to be one of the more derided viterarions of the TMNT.

I also fail to see how these designs are of the "current time period" I'd argue they seem horribly dated. I don't see many real people dressing like Michelangelo or any currently popular fictional protagonists dressing like Raphael or Leo. Shouldn't Don have a tablet device? Seems to me his design is based on a very old fashioned notion of what someone intelligent is supposed to look.

I really don't see how these designs are in anyway true to the "heart and soul" of the original designs that are supposed to be simple and a sense of uniformity. Stack these up against any previous TMNT design and they'd stand out like a sore thumb. The only version they seem remotely similar to is the aforementioned Next Mutation - not a good sign in my book.

Don't we have a new generation of TMNT fans based on the popularity of the Nickledeon cartoon? A show that uses designs based on the originals.

But not like this. Everyone knows who they are and what they are they don't have to wear their personalities. It's about character development. They can keep the same general design but change the general tone and that will be shaken up enough . With that logic, lets make superman black, batman Asian, the Incredible Hulk purple with yellow polka dots. Wolverine have lollipops instead of blades.

I love how you question my fandom as if i'm not a genuine fan. The original cartoon had to overcome many obstacles pertaining to appropriate content and tv censorship. The turtles were toned down after the first 3 episodes because they were considered to be too violent for the viewing demographic. The turtles were nothing like the Eastman and Laird comics ergo conforming to the socialistic views of that current time frame. Compare that to the new Nickelodeon show which has loads more action and violence. You brought up many interesting points pertaining to the overall look of the turtles. Your right the overall appearance is dated and does not really conform to the present look. Well said sir i appreciate your comment.

I am cautiously optimistic about the new designs. I DO like their faces (with the possible exception of Raph- Mikey's isn't TOO bad), and I really don't mind their clothing and accessories that much, although Raph's "gladiator biker" look is a bit odd, and Leo's "Samurai" armor doesn't seem very practical. But then again, it actually reminds me more of traditional Native American warrior garb, which was really more ceremonial than practical. I actually like Mikey's attire, though I'm sort of wondering how he got that hoodie under his shell, if that's an accurate image. The rest seems fine to me, including Donnie's "nerd" get-up, and whatever that is on his back- I'm thinking is some sort of communications pack or med-kit? He's the techie, so maybe it serves some sort of purpose we haven't seen yet. Mikey's tattoo is really cool, actually, and I almost wish they ALL had one, to sort of indicate that they are part of a clan.

The necklace, shades, and doo-rag are fine with me, those are just minor details, but they really don't detract from anything. My biggest gripe is the size of their shells- they look much too bulky and cumbersome, from the set pics we've seen. How they could perform any sort of acrobatic and/or/athletic moves with those, is beyond me. They are also much higher-domed than I would like to see, more like a tortoise than a turtle.

Where? I looked closely at the image and even zoomed it, and didn't see one anywhere. All I saw was some darker area that looked like natural skin-tone variations. There's really not even much exposed skin of his arms to see anything even if it's there, with all the wraps, the shoulder pads, and the bracer-thing on the left forearm. I might also note that none of the playmates figures have them either- not even Mikey. (Which makes no sense if he's got one in the movie, as it's not very accurate. Unless they just don't want to encourage kids getting tattoos, and I can see why they'd leave it off in that case.)

I'm sure that skin color variation is exactly what he means...I see it as a tat as well...but I've been wrong before.

I think the lack of tats on the toys is due to it being a paint app that Playmates would NEVER do out of expense/laziness.

There are all shorts of people in new york i bet i could find some where similar cloths maybe not the same thing everyday but things close to what they're wearing and not many people would wear only leather straps and belt with masks out in public either. but some clothes is better then nothing

Ninja Turtles wearing clothes always looks awesome.

That would be great except for two things- one, it's NOT his left arm as TrickorTreater says, and two, it's NOT on the photo of the actual movie maquette. I have that pic saved, and I looked. Nothing on his left arm but some darker skin, and his right arm (the one you circled in the poster image) is facing AWAY from the camera, so you can't even see if it was on that one. (Which would be his RIGHT forearm, BTW.)

It COULD be, but that is exactly the skin-variation I was talking about- it is blurry at best, and doesn't look like Mikey's design at all. All you can see are some lines that MIGHT be part of something, but that's it. Possibly a tribal band, but it doesn't appear to be the design same as Mikey's. It mostly looks like a shadowed area of a darker skin-tone. It could be something, but it's too indistinct to tell- I'm voting no, since it's hardly visible to begin with. Why have a tat if it's just going to be covered up anyway? Especially with clan or tribal signs- they are meant to be seen.

Oh. I know, Jester, I was just clarifying since you didn't know which pic I was talking about. Like I said, though- it COULD be something with the odd lines, but the rest is really a stretch, at best. I admit the image you circled looks more like a tat than the maquette's does. But I'm still very skeptical that any of them besides Mikey has one. Raph seems to have the most exposed skin of the other three, and I didn't see one on him, either. So the idea that it's a clan tat just doesn't seem to hold water. I've gone back over all the images just to see if I missed something, but so far, nothing. Unless we get some clearer pics, from different angles, I'm still voting no for the others.

If they had it since "birth" (I think the word you guys are looking for is hatching, BTW) then that would make it a birthmark, not a tribal mark. The lines actually looked more like tape or wrap borders to me, though maybe it was clear tape or something like that. And another thought just occurred to me- the lines might be the remains of some kind of identification mark from the breeder or pet shop they originally came from? Some animal breeders DO mark or tattoo their stock and all offspring for ID purposes in case they are lost or stolen, or if they die during transit or before being sold. Leo's might be something like that, though it looks like Mikey's is certainly a personal thing. Unless Leo's tat is on the fore-arm like in the poster. But then- where are they on the other two?

Hard to say at this point. I'm not even sure they all have one, since the other two don't show anything resembling what we've seen on Mikey (and Leo if that really IS one, which I kind of doubt.) I don't think the designs shown are finalized, but I do like the base structure of the turtles so far but there is way to much clutter on top of them and that distracts a lot from the actual design of the turtles. It really is not half bad when you look at them without all their clothing.

That's not the concept art of the movie designs, that's from the game Out of the Shadows, as the logo indicates.

Personally not a fan of the early designs from OotS, the plastron is all kinds of wrong when it's rendered as muscles. I'm so happy they changed that in the final design in the video game.

I actually really dig the fact that they're wearing clothes this time. I've always felt that, since the Turtles are basically humans in mutant turtle form, wouldn't they want to wear clothes too? They would feel weird walking around naked, wouldn't they?

Wouldn't it be the other way around since they are turtles not humans. They are turtles mutated into a bipedal form with pose-able thumbs. The only reason a humanoid turtle would need clothes is to prevent body temperature cooling, which won't help much.

I think people behind this movie wanted to make Turtles realistic and alien as if they were actual mutants. Obviously the wouldn't be all cuddly and cute like most of their incarnations, but I think, designers went a bit too far with alien angle and eventually made Turtles look very ugly to the point where they look simply repulsive.

While heroes could look ugly, I think they still must look somewhat likeable and this Turtles design, just doesn't come of as likeable or friendly in the least. Though maybe that was the point. Anyway, I think Out of Shadows handled Turtles realistic design much better. They looked alien, but not very repulsive.

I'm OK with Turtles wearing clothes, though I don't understand why Donatello must wear samurai garb like Leonardo, while all other Turtles wearing something completely different.

I prefer original looking turtles with the different color headbands. Basically I like my turtles to resemble the turtles we have known since the 1980s cartoon, or the 2k3 cartoon. However, I feel like the movie designs are acceptable, because they do look cool. So I will accept them. Some movies have a different look for their characters as compared to the comic books or cartoons. So the designs are okay. It is fun to have a new take on the turtles. Again, I prefer the original designs that we all know from the comics and cartoons.

It is kind of like going for a banana milk shake (original turtles), finding out they are out of that flavor, and getting a chocolate or vanilla milkshake (movie turtles) and still being happy.

In the Western world, ninjas appear to be covered almost entirely in black cloth, with only the eyes remaining visible. In reality, ninjas would wear clothing that would make them blend in with the crowd or the surroundings. Shinobi shozoko, the traditional ninja uniform, came in various colors, with black and dark blue used most often. Ninjas were not restricted to wearing this attire and could don outfits of peasants, traders, samurai warriors, and the like, in order to infiltrate the enemy ranks.
Aside from the standard attire, ninjas wore tabi boots, which had distinct split toe sections to make it easier for them to climb ropes, trees, and walls.

Why would he do that just for show? That's not the Way of the ninja, or a leader. He wears it cause he thinks it looks cool? I'd be looking for a new leader after that. What good ninja would purposely weight themseld down with armor that doesn't work just to look cool? And not even considering the noise factor when trying to be stealthy.

There are MANY more designs that beat out the current movie's designs and that are very much more than the "cookie cutter" designs of the original cartoon while STILL being recognizably the Turtles.

Even in other, smaller details they're all very much unique.

Heck Ross Turtle's are always a treat. The face paint designs are pretty cool with me. Its a small change that adds nothing but doesn't take away anything. And unfinished upside to that the markings are different so you could turned them all red if you'd prefer?

No I just don't like the idea of the facepaint in general.

The masks work just fine.

But other than that his stuff is great.

Honestly, the movie designs were nice, but I feel it misses the appeal of the rangers themselves

Sentai/Rangers = Spandex
Riders = Armor

It is what I feel that the Turbo movie did better than the first movie (actual spandex suits and the real megazord battle

True. But I didn't really get into the Rangers cuz of the Spandex. But that's just me. But im not the biggest Power Rangers fan. I tried to watch later versions when I was younger. But I just fell out of it IDK i just like the character and style of the Original Ranger.

Sad that Turbo didn't do better in the box office. Maybe we would se more power ranger movie done with bigger budgets. But I love Jason David Frank. He's a Great martial artist, Great with the fans, And has been trying to get a more adult version of the Green ranger movie off the ground, Which I think would be great.

Jdf is great. He was my hero growing up. He lives in my hometown now and a couple of friends have seen him around and say he's really friendly always excited to talk to fans. One of these days I gotta track him down and get him to sign something

I don't think that will really work to the theme of Power Rangers/Sentai (with it being a team thing rather than a single person -unless you are Daigo Sentai Kingranger, Or Power Rangers Nick Force

I mean this isn't Garo or something

fair enough, it could be worse...much worse

I mean, for JDF himself, he is okay...I just don't care for his hardcore fans that puts him on such a pedestal

I mean there is already a petition to get Tommy for the american version of Kyoryuger

So i could work and thats not to say it wouldn't involve the other rangers.

EOm14z7cOW0HAAHAHA though from the glimpses seen of the "ranger" the uniform was pretty cool (with a low budget)

Haven really seen much after Turbo or space which ever was the later one. So I cant really say how he performs in his other roles. Other then Green White and Black(from space)

He was black in Dino Thunder

I remember, during a discussion for an adaptation of Garo, some people were "fangasming" over the idea of JDF being in the show as the "White Tiger Knight"

though, I did hear he did want to try out for the adapation for Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, but Adness was reluctant of using Power Rangers actors - they didn't want to seem like they were trying to ride their wave

also...Power Rangers comics...kind of suck

Wow that Pretty bad ass.

I could see why they may be apprehensive. But I bet he would rock the character.

Meh. Comic lines tend to go both way good and bad through out their release. I'm sure there have been good ones?? but it was just comparison to how they could to a one off character run.

Though I've heard the new Comic book like it supposed to be good. people are pretty excited.
