So, given all the negativity in here as of late, I was thinking about starting a thread on something a little more positive. No matter how horrid a movie may or may not come out, all us music geeks know that the soundtrack alone is worth it's own discussion. Since there's virtually NOTHING out there about soundtrack, how about this:
1. Post (a) song(s) that you would love to see as part of the soundtrack.
2. Provide a link to either an audio clip or video clip of the song.
After either a month, or whenever it feels like it's getting over-loaded in here with songs, I'll create a poll that we can vote for 15 or so on. Then we'll have our own "Technodrome TMNT 2014" soundtrack to mark the movie. Whether you end up loving it or hating it, it's still going to be a point in TMNT history. Might as well try to spin it a little positive. :tgrin:
So who's in?
Just a few rules to "play nice" by as I would love to see this stay a positive thread:
* DO NOT bash others' taste in music.
* No "I hate" about the movie. This is about the music.
* If a song has explicit language, PLEASE mark it such. I might not have virgin ears, but I don't want to hear it and I know some others might now.

Nice notion there Catala! I'll have to ponder songs I'd like to hear in a soundtrack. Guess I was thinking of something with an orchestral feel similar to the way the music is in the 2012 show, but when it comes to a fan-made list that's a tough one. I got nothing at the moment but give me a few days or so and I'll probably come up with something. Thinking too hard on the matter at the moment. haha

I got a few songs that I like and I listen to on my MP3 player that could be perfect.
Linkin Park (I Like them to be on the soundtrack if their not doing Transformers again) - In My Remains and I'll be Gone
Skillet - Hero, Awake and Alive (used in a few TMNT music videos on Youtube) and Not Gonna Die
Kelly Clarkson - Stronger (What doesn't Kill you)

Those are excellent choices. All of them are really. I figure we'll be hearing from Linkin Park before all is said and done. Seems fitting since they did some of the Transformers stuff. And ah MastahShredder how that track you posted takes me back! Still gives me chills to this day. Love that one.

There's a huge difference, in my opinion, between monotone and gritty and/or metallic. I think that the score and soundtrack really needs to fit the movie. If the movie's dark, well, the soundtrack should match that. Ideally you should be able to listen to the accompanying soundtrack and/or score and know the story, or at least the plot, without even needing to see the movie.

Yeah, but does every movie needs to same exactly the same nowadays?
Hans Zimmer and million of his clones, **** that ****!
We need a fun score for ninja turtles something Catchy but not overly campy,in the style of the Kill Bill movies, but this being a M.B production we will surely get a lot of modern pop music and Linkin parks style douchebags that doesn't suit the film at all...

I for one believe that a movies soundtrack is about the most important aspect of film. I mean I could watch garbage pale kids to the Drive soundtrack and it would probably break into my top 10 films, lol. With that being said I would be friggin ecstatic if john murphy, Cliff Matthews, mike Patton, Mark Stretienfeld, and of course Hanz Zimmer were part of this film, sadly that's not the case.

Yes! That's gotta be played during the movie! Seems like it'd fit during training and/or for closing credits. If they don't use that, well then I'll eat my movie ticket. More like a ticket stub, so maybe it won't taste that bad. Joking aside, nice choice in music there.

Damned thing refuses to work for me so, yeah. lol. Never mind. I had Motorhead, Alice Cooper, Apocallyptica, Black Label Society, a really nice cover of all along the watch tower, Suicidal Tendencies' tune Possessed to skate, Powerman 5000's Free, Monster Magnet, Hatebreeds' Honor never dies, And a few others. Thing is, I could make a ten page list really easily. and of a wide variety of music. Seeing some really good choices so far, I really dig that cover by Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix. The vid for it reminds me of the Fallout games. *smiles*

Man Of Steel had the best score soundtrack. It would be amazing if Turtles had something like that, but I doubt Brian Tyler can deliver something that emotional and epic. And I don't think the action in Turtles can even reach that colossal, epic level Man Of Steel had, which in turn probably means we might not get that grand of a score. I was watching The Wolverine and I noticed how (it's harder to put it into words) not good the score was. It had that cheesy early 80's, 90's action music feel during the some of the fight scenes, especially the last fight. Man Of Steel, although there were some things that weren't that great, still has the most grand score. The music was continuous throughout the film and felt very uplifting. It never sounded boring. Hopefully Turtles can get on the same level score-wise. Hopefully.

My hubby and I are obsessed with both Lindsey Stirling & Pentatonix! As someone who has played violin (and actually won a couple awards for it) I can say that if I had tried to dance whilst playing it would have resulted in many broken violins and possibly a broken nose- she is a remarkable musician and so incredibly creative!
Pentatonix- Mitch's voice is the most beautiful male voice I think I've ever heard- if you didn't know it was a guy you'd swear "she had a beautiful voice." Just an amazing guy! Plus, don't even get me started on Avi- guy is freaking amazing!!! I could just watch him sing and be impressed. Not to mention Kevin- amazing beatboxer and a truly accomplished cellist! I just love that group!

I am absolutely loving what people are coming up with! These options are fantastic, not to mention opening my eyes up to bands that I've never heard of before.
For an FYI: tech support (a.k.a. my hubster) helped me figure out the YouTube imbedding. Here's a very user friendly breakdown of the how-to I got last night since I was low on patience and caffeine.
1. Find the vid that you want on YouTube.
2. Copy only the random assortment of letters at the end of the URL. So, in the case of "Ninja Rap" (here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFLGRidfFo4), all you need is the GFLGRidfFo4 at the end.
3. Insert that little snippet of address (GFLGRidfFo4) between the YouTube tags, which are these things: {YOUTUBE}{/YOUTUBE}. Just make sure you use [] instead of {}, which I did for demonstration purposes.
This should be your final product:

I agree, but I think that might only be because of the TMNT I and II soundtracks, which were both very hip-hop, which was what was in at the time.

I really loved the score from the original TMNT movie. But, if I had to design one for the new one...that's a bit tricky. I think that I would have to look towards a symphonic metal stylization. I think it would be the most ideal way to get a similar sound to what was done on TMNT I but add the edge to it that the new variant of TMNT seems to be creating.

Didn't really happen on that one. The closest you get is Pepper's "Bring Me Along," which is obviously supposed to be the April/Casey song. I guess Meg & Dia's "Roses" could possibly count, but it's more about lost innocence than anything.

I know lots of folk have a deep distaste for "NuMetal" or whatever, but fact is, Papa Roach has always been among the better bands in the genre. And realistically, their music is pretty much custom-made for movie soundtracks. Especially movies like this one.

Movie scores are never done until the final edit of the film is complete. Heck, sometimes they don't even start until then. This is 100% typical. If people spent ten seconds actually thinking about what a score is, that would make perfect sense.
You wouldn't have a choice in "cutting it close," because you couldn't possibly be finished until you knew every second of the film.

*sigh* Risk takers... I'd have already been done with it for four or six months prior to release, with those months left open for emergency fixes if necessary... ain't no way in hell I'd be cutting something that big that close. lol
You can't really do a whole lot with the score until the film is closer to being finished. There's a lot of conditions to consider, such as the pace of the edit, timing of the visual effects, what's in the film, what's deleted, so on and so forth.

True of course, and I suppose them reshooting junk or whatever the hell it was said they were doing a couple months ago kind of brought it to cutting it a bit close. But still.. geezus. Nope, couldn't do it, signing up a release date that soon with a bunch of work still to do. >.<

He signed on a while back. And, he probably started formulating ideas and even writing themes and cues soon after. It's the scoring sessions that come late in the game, as it's part of the post-production process.

Brian Tyler's one of the best contemporary, up-n-coming film composers. He's up there with Michael Giacchino as one of my favorites out of the younger composers.
He's done some amazing things with his work on Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 3, The Expendables 1 & 2, John Dies at the End, Bubba Ho Tep, and Children of Dune. He also got the gig for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
So while some of us may be cautious about some other aspects of the film, at least we know it'll have a helluva soundtrack.

I've not seen the Dragonball movie. I've heard it wasn't good, and what I saw of it didn't convince me of anything else for that matter. However, I'm sure the score was good as he's an excellent action composer in the tradition of Jerry Goldsmith.
He's also composed several of The Fast and the Furious films, starting with Tokyo Drift. He didn't compose Furious 6, but supposedly he's coming back for Fast 7.
Tyler has also done some video game and television work, with Sleepy Hollow, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Modern Warfare 3.
I can't wait to hear what he has in store for Ninja Turtles!

As someone who has a tremendous weakness for legendarily bad movies, I'm almost tempted to watch DBEvolution... almost.
I'm really interested to see what they end up putting on the non-score part of the soundtrack. I'd guess that they're going to keep something a little bit rap/hip-hoppy in keeping with past soundtracks (sorry if I've used the wrong words; I don't really listen to the genre that much!)... it'd be really gnarly if we got something as iconic as T-U-R-T-L-E Power or the Ninja Rap with this movie.

...or "Goro Vs. Art" from the "Mortal Kombat" soundtrack. I had no idea those guys were gonna fight! Actually, I only even mention it because wow, such an awesome track. I love that one to death.
I always wonder if soundtracks have Spoilers as titles because they figure nobody but the most hardcore will buy it, and that those people already either know or have a good idea what's going to happen? Makes no real sense to me either, though. I suspect they're just kind of lazy; they arrange music based on specific scenes, like "Character X Dies", and internally, it need not be any more complicated than that, but when it comes time to release the album, nobody bothers to take the time to re-title every song. I guess it just seems like extra hassle for nothing, coming up with appropriate but spoiler-free names for every two-minute snippet of music over a two-hour film.

That's because a lot of labels use them as a way of promoting artists that are signed with them, in the hopes that you'll go buy all of those albums, too. Lame, but an unfortunate truth. (This is basically the TMNT 2007 soundtrack in a nutshell.)

You left out Track 16 - April and Raphael's Passionate Embrace. To be followed by the hit single, "I Kissed A Turtle (And I Liked It)".
Seriously though, the 2k7 soundtrack was a bit of a letdown. I hope this one gives us at least one good song. Failing that, I just hope the soundtrack doesn't have any dubstep or Linkin Park.
Can you just imagine how awful it'd be if we got some squalid music video to the movie; clips of the Turtles and Megan Fox being showcased against some warbling, watered-down acoustic-rock ballad? I shudder to think.

The score will be released through Varese Sarabande, a film score label. You'll be able to get it through their website. However, they also release their scores commercially, so you'll be able to get it as a CD through Amazon and as a digital download through iTunes. I wouldn't hold my breath looking for it at Wal-Mart, only because brick and mortar stores, even such as Best Buy, are really slimming down their home video and music assortments. (CDs at Wal-Mart, especially, have been reduced to like an 8 to 12 foot section, where it used to be two to three aisles.)
The " songs (not really) inspired by the motion picture" soundtrack, that you might find at Wal-Mart and Target.
You might be able to find both at FYE. Not sure how their assortments fair these days.

It's really hard to finish a score far before it's time to edit. A composer has to know how scenes will play out, when there'll be a transition, if any stinger sounds need to be added, etc. If someone is given too much time to edit, you get messy films like Harry Potter 5-8 that are whittled down to their bare bones.
sgtfbomb
07-02-2014, 07:00 AM
Of course they've started editing. It's a long and arduous process. The assembly cut was probably delivered not too long after principal photography wrapped. Not only does it not make sense to hold scoring sessions before editing has begun, but it would be senseless to schedule reshoots/pickups prior to seeing a rough cut, as seeing the whole bloody affair pieced together for the first time allows you to see areas that need to be added/tweaked/changed. (Also, it allows them to ditch un-neccessary sequences that may or may not require costly effects, such as CGI characters, hence minimizing a major amount of time, work, and expenses being spent on something that won't be in the film, which is why finishing animation before getting too far into editing would be crazy.)

The pair also said that the film will run just under 100 minutes and promised that we “might even hear” some of the original cartoon’s theme song in some manner. The end credits, too, will offer a “very, very fun song.” Mostly, though, their primary goal is to capture the overall tone of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and deliver it in a manner that will palatable for new audiences.

I believe I commented on this in my thread, but the soundtrack is disappointingly unspectacular.
Tyler is known to be a workaholic, and in this case work roughly right up to the films release. He has done several scores that are very impressive, but this is not one of them. It's a decent score to push the film forward, just nothing memorable or distinct enough to progress into another film.

The score does not feel dated, just uninspiring.

From the little I've heard of the score, it's fantastic and appropriately Turtles!

The score for the original film was a joke...
Well... it was the end of the 80s after all, everything in that decade (and early 90s) pretty much was, what do people expect. It worked for it's era. It also didn't have blockbuster level funding, etc behind it.

John Du Prez's score is the most notable theme in the film franchise.
I wouldn't say it was a product of its time. The film musical tracks are absolutely in the time capsule.

Being "dated" is such a moot, pointless criticism anyway.
Plus, Brian Tyler is a really good composer. I wouldn't call his work slop. Jablonsky on the other hand, that's slop, but not Brian Tyler, and I saw Guardians of the Galaxy today and every bit of music, from the songs to the score, was fairly good. It wasn't an iconic score, but a score doesn't have to be iconic to be good.
The score for the original TMNT film was also good.

I hope they release full album on iTunes, or is it only Shell Shocked?Gah, it's so generic! I really dislike Tyler Bates. Guardians of the Galaxy had an utterly forgettable score, but it had great classic songs to cover it's ass. I doubt tmnt will have that fortune.
This is pretty disappointing.
Speak for yourself. That movie's songs were horrendous and outdated, save for the Jackson 5 song at the end.

I ain't seen it yet, but I read a little about GotG... the guy from Earth, didn't he leave Earth in like 1988 or something and have an obsession with music from back in that era? Sounds like they were trying to play with that a little bit thematically. I like a lot of the songs I've seen listed for that one, but I'd have to see how they worked them into the movie to judge if it was effective or not. None of it at all sounds like I'd expect for that kind of movie, which is... intriguing.

I agree. Tyler is one of my favorite composers. And I for one like the TMNT theme. I think it has some energy and I like the cord progression. And I saw GOTG and LOVED the score. Thought it was perfect for the film. I'm also a big Tyler Bates fan. Tiz why I am excited to here what Him and Manson pull of for Manson's new film.

I've seen it, and it's very effective. There's a really personal feeling to it for reasons that'll be clear when you see it. The music choices make absolute sense and are meaningful to Star-Lord's character.
And as an added bonus, I've had all those songs stuck in my head for days now.

The cassette player was given to him by his mother that dies in the beginning of the film. She dies right in front of him. She made tapes for him to listen to. That is why he gets so upset when that alien guy listens to his tape lol
The main orchestral theme for the movie is really amazing. Esp. when you hear it while watching the movie. I'm interested in hearing how the TMNT theme meshes with the movie.

Scores don't always get released right away. Sometimes, it's a week or so before, sometimes a week or so after -- we would've known by now if this were the case -- and other times, it's a month or many months after. In some cases, it takes years. Though, promo scores and recording sessions do leak.

With respect to all of the artists, the song doesn’t really do it for me. It feels a little artificial—what I mean by that is that it sounds like a bunch of executives in the corporate world put it together. It really does not fit the theme of the Ninja Turtles legend. I think you have to understand, and be a true Ninja, to possess the Magic to really pull off the secret sound.
I'm speechless.

the theme is really well done - very old school adventure, and powerful, and when listening to the rest of the tracks, the chord progression used in the theme is very subtlety worked into the rest of the tracks.

I don't like it, it's obnoxious and corny even by TMNT standards. I like my film-based songs to be subtle; like you don't have to know what they're from to enjoy them, but once you learn what it's from you can identify the key words in the lyrics.

The two release rap songs are pretty terrible, but the score by Brian Tyler is fantastic. I would highly recommend that over the songs. It's fun, energetic, and actually is pretty light-hearted and adventureous compared to some of the more bland and dark superhero scores as of late.

I imagined Leo and Raph reconciled and hug it out.. And Don and Mikey joined them, they all hold hands and step into the light, fading away, prepared to die...lol me and my imagination.
I think the violin (?) sweeping and weeping truly gave that heartfelt effect.
